Fire chief expects new Parham firehall to be up and running by end of November

School Board closed the school in favour of the Granite Ridge Education Centre, the fate of that particular aspect of the library was sealed. The Board agreed to continue allowing the library to operate on a temporary basis but what the Kingston/Frontenac Library Board will do with the new Parham fa-cility is still very much up in the air.

One suggestion had been to install book ‘vending’ machines but Mayor Frances Smith said that idea went over like a lead balloon at a recent meeting in Parham.

“Phil (Coun. Smith), Brent (Coun. Cameron) and I attended an open house on the library last week,” Smith said. “There were about 12 residents in at-tendance and the message was clear — they do not want a mechanical li-brary.”

The final decision as to what sort of facility the Parham Library will be rests with the Library Board, however Smith did have a carrot or two to dangle in front of them.

“There is provision for shelving (for the library) in the 2016 budget,” she said. “We’ll hold the discussion when we get into budget talks.”

Central Frontenac passes bylaw lowering speed limits on some roads

By Craig Bakay

News — You might want to pay attention to speed limit signs

on Central Frontenac Roads in the coming days as Central Frontenac Council formally passed a bylaw re-ducing speeds on a number of them at its regular meeting last week in Sharbot Lake.

“What is the cost to change signs?” asked Coun. Tom Dew-ey. “Obviously we’ll have to buy signs.”

“According to (roads supervisor Reynolds) Steve, he has a number of signs already,” said Clerk Cathy MacMunn.

The new speed limits now in ef-fect include 40 kilometres per hour on Arden Road north of civic ad-dress 5916; 50 kilometres per hour on Henderson Road from Hwy 7 to Baker Valley Road and in the ham-let of Henderson; 60 kilometres per hour on Arden Road south of civic address 5916 and Henderson Road from Baker Valley Road with the exclusion of the hamlet of Hender-son.

The speed limit on any munici-pal road without a posted limit is 80

kilometres per hour.• • • Dep. Mayor Jamie Riddell told

Council that Internet connection improvements for the Mountain Grove area are looking promising.

“North Frontenac Telephone is working with the federal govern-ment on grants,” Riddell said.

• • • Just as Frontenac County Clerk

Jannette Amini was about to give her presentation on the County’s accessibility awareness campaign to Central Frontenac’s regular Council meeting last week in Shar-bot Lake, the lights went out over much of Frontenac County.

However, Fire Chief Bill Young and Dep. Chief Art Cowdy were on the job. Several minutes later a generator arrived and Council was back in business.

One highlight of Amini’s pre-sentation was an anecdote from a conference she recently attended where North Frontenac Transporta-tion Services was complimented.

“If you need transportation ser-vices, look at the Sharbot Lake model,” she said.

• • •

Council passed a bylaw appoint-ing Bill Avery and Howard Farrell as alternate fence viewers for an upcoming viewing scheduled for Oct. 28.

Clerk/planning coordinator Cathy MacMunn told Council that the original viewing was completed back in September of 2014 and a hearing set for Dec. 3, 2014.

“(However) the Deputy Referee set aside the fence-viewing award because the approval of the Town-ship Council was not obtained be-fore the fence viewers were called out to arbitrate,” she said. “Subsec-tion 19 (2) of the Line Fences Act requires approval from a municipal council where an existing fence is located in the middle of a road al-lowance.”

Council passed a resolution in May of this year approving the fence viewing but before the hear-ing was to take place (June 6, 2015) two of the viewers were unable to act, she said.

“Since that date, we have had difficulty acquiring fence viewers to conduct the viewing (so) we had to get two from our neighbour, Tay Valley.”

The two don’t mix very well so please take precautions that what you put in your recycling box STAYS in your recycling box. Central Frontenac treasurer “cautiously optimistic” 2015 budget numbers will be metBy Craig Bakay

News — “Three million in one month, whew,” said Mayor Frances Smith when it came time to pay the bills at Central Frontenac’s regular Council meeting last week in Shar-bot Lake.

However, that kind of bill isn’t

all that unusual at this time of year considering it’s the end of the road construction season and with Road 38 railway bridge reconstruction and an unexpected repair to Raymo Road as well as other roadwork ac-counting for $1.8 million of the to-tal, it wasn’t really a big shock.

Actually, even though revenues

are down two per cent from last year, expenditures are down nine per cent and Treasurer Michael McGovern reported that measures taken to miti-gate a $255,000 shortfall (identified as “budget pressure”) identified in April have been largely successful.

McGovern managed to trim $28,000 from repair and replace-

ment, $34,100 from salaries (pre-sumably because the Township was without a Clerk and/or Public Works Manager for some time), $55,500 from loan deferral, $70,000 from contaminated sites, $50,000 from the gravel budget and $17,400 from capital programs.

“(And) our truck repair costs have been lower this year, hopefully that will continue,” McGovern said. “And our gravel budget has been lower.”

“Some of us were concerned that our gravel budget was too low,” said Coun. Brent Cameron.

But new Public Works Manager John Badgley said: “From what I can see, we’re there.”

“I’m still cautiously optimistic (that the 2015 actuals will come in at budget),” said McGovern. “It’s still too early to tell because only the swim program has been completed.”

As of Sept. 30, the good news is that solar revenues are 20 per cent higher than last year and building revenue is up by $35,000. Rents from facilities are up slightly and a $10,000 playground equipment grant from Hydro One helped that

department. On the expenditures side, gen-

eral government, animal control, the medical centre, waste sites (moni-toring costs are lower as are Oso site closure costs) and roads (mostly due to repair bills) are all slightly lower than expected.

Facilities and conservation au-thorities costs are comparable to previous years.

Fire costs (mostly due to the new Parham firehall and volunteer pays in December) are higher.

“The cash flow is meeting expen-ditures and bank interest is favour-able to last year,” McGovern said.

And while it has very little im-pact on the budget, Council did pass a bylaw deeming one-third of the remuneration paid to elected mem-bers as expenses incidental to the discharge of their duties.

This is allowed under Section 238 (7) of the Municipal Act and was also recently enacted for mem-bers of Frontenac County Council.

The result of the bylaw is that Council members won’t have to pay income tax on that one-third of their salaries.

Don Connolly: aviation art and a lot more at the Grace CentreBy Craig Bakay

News — At age 84, Little Long Lake Road artist Don Connolly shows no signs of slowing down.

His one-man show, currently on dis-play at the Grace Centre in Sydenham, contains more than 40 recent works of painting and bas-relief sculpture (ply-wood routed and painted).

Although Connolly has long been recognized for his aviation art, this particular show gives more insight into the artist’s muses, containing as it does a number of abstractions as well as a couple of pure landscapes and several paintings with distinct nautical themes.

However, the masterpiece of the show, Flight: Dream, Myth & Real-ization, shows his mastery of fantasy, including various images like Icarus, the condor found in King Tut’s tomb and depictions of several examples of flight attempts from ages past.

Although he’d never heard of the term “steampunk” before, he’s clearly mastered the genre, even though he contends that “with the exception of Icarus and the King Tut piece, all of the craft depicted have been built and flown, granted some of them were only models.”

The large painting also incorporates a trompe l’oeil (French for “deceive the eye”) technique. We’ll let the viewer discover that on their own.

Connolly’s draftsmanship has al-

ways been unquestioned, as is his ‘ob-session’ with accurate detail.

For example, when asked who would notice is something wasn’t quite right on a masterful image of the In-ternational Space Station he replied: “well, Chris Hadfield for one, he had a look at it to make sure.”

The show also features Connolly’s flights into the world of abstraction, showing that there’s much more to his artistic leanings than just airplanes. Most of his abstract works are done on routed plywood, giving them a sculp-tural effect, and then painted with the same precision as his aviation works.

Curiously though, when it’s pointed out to him that a study in blue and white contains all the necessary elements of a pirate schooner, albeit slightly rear-ranged, he casually remarked: “I don’t see it myself.”

Still, it is his aviation art that Con-nolly will be most remembered for, and the way the viewer gets the impression that they are part of the painting some-how.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the sublime Caribbean Exercise, which depicts a CS2F aircraft taking off from the Bonaventure, Canada’s long-since retired aircraft carrier.

Connolly spent some time on the carrier and wanted to give the viewer a feel for what it’s like when the catapult engages and “suddenly you’re flying.”

He managed that rather well.

Connolly’s recent works show con-tinues at The Grace Centre until Dec.

4, with the artist in attendance on Sun-days from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Most of

the works are still for sale with prices ranging from $200 to $3,500.

The hot dog and the princess

We’d been discussing Summer’s Halloween costume for a good six months prior to the big day.

Initially, she went the reptile route. “I want to be an alligator for Halloween,” she randomly an-nounced one day in April, adding: “and mommy can be a witch, and daddy can be a princess.”

Of course, she changed her mind.

For a while she wanted to be Elsa (from Frozen). Steve was all for this option because she was Elsa last year and thus we could save $30 by not having to buy a new costume. I told her she couldn’t be the same thing two years in a row – that’s how Halloween works. Plus, I said, didn’t she want to be something other than a princess? At least 90 per cent of the world’s three year old girls will surely be princesses this Halloween. Why didn’t she think of a different costume and let daddy be the prin-cess?

Summer must have taken this ad-vice to heart because finally, about a month ago, she came up with a whole new idea.

“I want to be a HOT DOG for Halloween,” she announced with a big smirk on her face.

“A hot dog?” I said as I burst out laughing.

“Yes, a HOT DOG.” She was clearly satisfied with my reaction,

and made sure to remind me – and indeed anyone else who would listen – of her plan every few days, always gazing expectantly and whomever she happened to be telling, wait-ing for them to be impressed by the sheer hilarity of her Halloween cos-tume idea.

By mid-October I hadn’t been able to find a toddler-sized hot dog costume in any local store, so I or-dered one online. It arrived a few days later and I was honestly a little nervous to show it to Summer. She was so excited about the idea of be-ing a hot dog I was afraid she would insist on wearing the costume every-where.

At last, I couldn’t take it any-more.

“Look what came, Sunny,” I said and let her open the package. “Do you know what that is?”

She appeared to be a little stunned. “It’s a hot dog costume,” she said, looking up at me blankly.

“Well, do you want to try it on?” She nodded silently and I helped her into the costume.

“You look great,” I said. “Do you want to go look in the mirror?” But she didn’t want to look in the mirror. In fact, she wanted to take the costume off immediately. I was perplexed and a little disappointed at what a flop the hot dog costume turned out to be.

The next day, Summer announced that she wanted to be Princess Anna (also from Frozen) instead. She al-ready has an Anna dress so I told her sure, she could be Anna if she wanted, but that I still thought she should be a hot dog.

Then, a few days before Hallow-een, she seemed to warm to the hot dog idea once again. “Mommy, I can’t wait to be a HOT DOG for Hal-loween,” she said with the same old mischievous grin. She also wanted to try the costume on again. This time, she got really excited about it and started dancing around the house. I could barely get her to hold still long enough for me to take a picture. (I had to document this – what if she never wants to wear it again?)

Perhaps Summer wasn’t being entirely serious when she first an-nounced the hot dog idea – maybe she didn’t know this sort of costume actually existed. Or maybe she got cold feet about dressing as some-thing so different from what all the other little girls will be wearing. Expressing your individuality by re-vealing your inner quirkiness can be hard, even for adults.

At the time of writing, I’m still not sure which costume she’ll choose. (Our press time is prior to Halloween.) I sincerely hope that she chooses the hot dog costume, as opposed to Anna or one of the other princesses.

If you care to follow this story and see what Summer chose, check out my Twitter, @hollieprattcamp.

In Our Opinion

Get your flu shot!Editorial – It’s that time of year again – time for colder weather, cozy

sweaters, scarves, warm soups and inevitably the flu. Most seasonal flu activity typically occurs between October and May each year with the heaviest activity taking place between December and February, so it is important to take precautions early - and a big part of that is getting the flu shot.

The sooner a person is immunized against influenza, the sooner they and vulnerable people around them are protected from this contagious and poten-tially dangerous illness. KFL&A Public Health recommends that all area resi-dents, not just the young and the elderly, get immunized as soon as possible.

“Waiting until influenza is in our community is too late to be immu-nized,” said Dr. Ian Gemmill, Medical Officer of Health for KFL&A Public Health. “The only way to ensure that a person is protected is to get the vaccine and to get it well before December.”

Many people fear that they can actually get influenza from the flu vac-cine. This is a myth. Most people have no reaction at all to the vaccine, and almost all of those who do have only minor side effects, such as a sore arm or mild fever.

“Influenza immunization is the safest, longest-lasting and best defense for keeping people healthy during the influenza season,” said Dr. Gem-mill. “Everyone who is six months of age and older is eligible for annual influenza immunization, unless there is a medical reason not to do so. It is especially important that those at high risk for influenza-related complica-tions or those who live or work with people who are at high risk for compli-cations, hospitalizations or death, receive influenza vaccine.”

In the KFL&A area, there are many simple ways to get influenza immuni-zation. It is available from family doctors, local pharmacists or at a KFL&A Public Health clinic. The annual influenza immunization program kicks off this year with a walk-in clinic at Queen’s University on Friday, Nov. 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Clinics by appointment will be held on Fridays at KFL&A Public Health’s main office on Portsmouth Avenue in Kingston.

The complete schedule of influenza immunization clinic dates and locations is available on KFL&A Public Health’s website, www.kflapublichealth.ca. To book an appointment for influenza immunization, visit www.kflapublichealth.ca/appointments or call 613-549-1232 or 1-800-267-7875.

Here’s your chance to give a kid a (rock’n’roll) Christmas

Column — I’m going to suspend my long-held prohibition against re-porting on Christmas events before Remembrance Day just this once to tell you about something happening at the Sydenham Legion Nov. 14.

Tom Revell, of Little Betty, Bauder Road and lately Dark Horse, along with fellow organizers Rebecca Wagar and Jamie Deline, are putting together the 16th annual Rock ’n’Roll Toy Drive for kids.

The show starts at 8 p.m. and includes Revell’s aforementioned Dark Horse, Still Standing, 10-Cent Hat, The Fonzies and Bauder Road. Tickets are $20 each (available at Nicole’s Gift Shop and the Pet Food Place in Sydenham as well as at the door). There’ll also be a whopping silent auction and lots of prizes.

All proceeds will go to the Lough-borough Christmas and Emergency Relief Committee and the Verona Christmas for Kids funds.

“Rebecca and Jamie have been very busy going around getting stuff for the silent auction and there are also jars around the community to contribute,” Revell said. “We’re really hoping to raise a lot of mon-ey because it’s going to be a tough Christmas for many in this area.”

And Tom should know. A social worker when he’s not butchering rock standards (he said I could say that), he’s seen first hand that there actually is a need in the area.

People in rural areas like Fronte-nac County don’t tend to complain about their financial situations, but Hydro bills and heating costs tend to dominate budgets as tempera-tures fall and days get shorter.

And nobody should have to de-cide between groceries and a bit of Christmas cheer, especially when kids are involved.

Political correctness be damned — Christmas is a time when people have a right to feel happy, even if it’s only for a short while.

Perhaps that’s why the musi-cians will all be donating their time and expertise on this one. And they’ll incur some expenses (which they’ll cover themselves) in terms

of gas and strings and equipment and such.

“There’s no money to be made in music these days,” Revell said. “But if I can give a kid a Christmas, then I’m going to.”

True enough. Although there are a precious

few who still manage a living in the music business, there aren’t many and most of them that do have very supportive spouses/significant oth-ers with decent jobs.

But all that aside, one thing that can make it worthwhile for the mu-sicians involved is a large, appre-ciative crowd, so keep that in mind when making plans.

There will be other fundraising efforts this holiday season, all good causes, all worthwhile and deserv-ing of your attention and whatever you can afford to give.

And perhaps there’s nothing to make this one more deserving than any other except that you don’t find many other professions willing to work (and trust me, putting together a set list and making sure everybody shows up in tune is work) for free.

I’ll get down off my beatbox now.

Frontenac Paramedics first in Canada to test drive new ambulanceBy Mandy [email protected]

News – For paramedics, lifting patients in and out of ambulances is a daily occurrence – one that is both strenuous and at times stressful. But a new smarter, safer ambulance is hop-ing to improve this process and it is taking its first Canadian test run right here in Kingston.

The new ambulance, named the Integrated Patient Transport System

(IPTS), is one of only five being pi-loted in the world and was developed through a partnership between Crest-line Coach and Ferno.

“The goal of this concept vehicle is first and foremost to improve safety inside the ambulance,” explained Tim Schroeder, director of ambulance sys-tems at Ferno. “While we are improv-ing safety we also had the opportunity to improve efficiency and outcomes with the ambulance by making it a better environment and system and

we have worked hard to achieve all of this.”

The new ambulance includes a motorized stretcher and lift system, a modular interior system that allows paramedics to move equipment around the ambulance as needed while seated and restrained, smart technology that helps the driver assess situations while driving and solar panels that enable a smaller carbon footprint for the ve-hicle.

The first model of the ambulance

was tested earlier this year in Missouri and has been modified based on that trial run. Now, for the second 90-day trial Frontenac Paramedic Services (FPS) is taking the wheel.

“Frontenac had always been in-strumental in the development of new technology,” said Scott Sawatsky, director of sales and marketing at Crestline Coach. “Chief Charbonneau and his team have been fantastic and have always been innovative and have worked to drive new technology. This trial was a perfect fit for this team and region.”

In addition to new technology, the new ambulance will greatly benefit emergency workers and maybe even prolong their careers.

“The new stretcher will probably put years on my career because I won’t be lifting as much. We lift stretchers probably about nine times per call and that is a lot of loading and unloading on your spine,” explained Dave Doran, an advanced care paramedic with FPS. “I can do my job in a much safer way with this vehicle.”

The new IPTS system also allows a safer, more secure and more comfort-able experience for patients.

“This stretcher will be a lot more comfortable for patients and the am-bulance experience overall will be easier,” said Doran. “With the ability to move equipment into different spots on the walls we can plan better and we can access things easier. We won’t be moving around the ambulance and pa-tient while in transit.”

While the new vehicle doesn’t of-ficially hit the streets until next week, Frontenac paramedics received thor-ough training with the vehicle on Oct. 28. Many liked what they saw and according to Schroeder response has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The response has been great and it has been that way globally,” he said. “It is easier for the medic to focus on the patient instead of the environment around them and that is what we want. We have done a lot of research and we think this can really change how things are done currently and in a positive and more efficient way.”

The new IPTS ambulance will oper-ate out of the Palace Road FPS station for the next three months. Following the trial, feedback will be given to Fer-no and Crestline and the vehicle will remain in service in the area.

Family and Children’s Services remembers local soldier this Remembrance DayBy Mandy [email protected]

News – Last year, Family and Children’s Services for Frontenac, Lennox and Addington (FACSFLA) took on a special Remembrance Day project. Instead of simply fo-cusing on all of the brave soldiers who lost their lives at war, FACS-FLA focused on Kingston native Captain Stanley Cunningham and his personal story.

“It was a wonderful project be-cause we wanted to make Remem-brance Day come alive for one sol-dier and one family. We called it the ‘Soldier of the Great War Project’,” explained John Suart, manager of community relations for FACSFLA. “The project was very successful and we decided to do it again this year.”

This year, FACSFLA is honour-ing Private Edward Nelson Badour of Sharbot Lake, who was killed Nov.17, 1917. Badour fought with the 20th Battalion and was wound-ed, captured and later died of his

wounds at the Battle of Passchen-daele. Because of the way he died there is no known grave for Badour and instead he is memorialized at the ‘Men in Gate’ memorial in Bel-gium.

The Agency worked with local historian Al Lloyd and the Shar-bot Lake Legion to find the com-plete story of Badour, including his original enlistment papers, pictures of his family and more. They even tracked down two nephews of Ba-dour in Sharbot Lake.

“He has a family that is still in the area. He is still making an im-pact on the area,” Suart explained. “The Legion out in Sharbot Lake has his photo hanging on the wall. They didn’t even realize it was him, but there he was, nearly 100 years after his death.”

While FACSFLA usually focuses on children’s issues, Suart feels it is important to also focus on individu-als like Badour.

“We’ve been around for 121 years and during both the First and Second World Wars our agency had

a history of helping out when we could,” said Suart. “He is part of our history too and we thought that if we weren’t going to tell this story then who would?”

The ‘Soldier of the Great War Project’ includes videos, photos and historical documents about Badour and Suart hopes these materials make their way into people’s homes and into schools as well.

“It is a fantastic project that we are sharing and we really hope that people recognize Remembrance Day by remembering people like Private Badour,” said Suart. “The First World War happened 100 years ago and people like this guy are now just a picture on the wall, but remembering is so important. The real trick of Remembrance Day is getting people to remember real people and he was a real person from the area.”

The Soldier of the Great War is available online for anyone to see and share on YouTube. Search Re-member KFLA or go to the FACS-FLA website at www.facsfla.ca

On guard for thee: A community rallies to protect veterans’ memorialBy Cris Vilela

It’s 3 a.m. on the morning of Sat-urday, Oct. 24. The air is chilled, the wind persistent, and the airport lights shine a patriotic red and white glow along Bayridge Drive.

Stephanie Langille has just said goodbye to two of her long-time friends; they’d come from Belleville, about an hour’s drive away, to keep her company for a few hours as she stood guard along the Flags Of Re-membrance veteran memorial.

For a few brief moments, Lang-ille and her dog Vito, a five-year-old Cane Corso, are alone for the first time since dusk. Soon a car passes by and slows to a stop a few metres down the road. From it a man and woman emerge, hands filled with gifts of cof-fee and muffins.

This has been a common occur-rence throughout the night - a reflec-tion of the community’s resolve to fight back against the senseless theft and vandalism that has taken place in Kingston over the past week. In total, eight flags have been stolen from the Flags of Remembrance memorial, which was erected along Bayridge Drive Oct. 17 to honour our nation’s veterans; in addition, several plaques recognizing and honouring individual veterans have been torn off their posts and tossed aside on the ground.

MPP Sophie Kiwala and some

private citizens quickly replaced the stolen flags. Others, like Langille, are adamant that they will prevent any further desecration of the memorial and have resolved to stand guard for as long as it remains up. Stephanie is ambivalent about being named for this story. She’s here for her fiancé, MCpl David Goodrich, who is among the 128,000 heroes represented by the memorial. She doesn’t want pub-lic recognition and quickly deflects it toward others. She’s quick to cite the hard work of Flags of Remembrance organizers: Megan Hiltz, Jane Doug-las and Al Cameron. After months of fundraising and planning, they are now in the unexpected position of having to organize weeks-long protection for the 128 flags that have been put up, as the memorial will remain in place until Nov. 14.

Support has come quickly, how-ever. Taxi drivers have promised to drive by frequently and report any suspicious activity. The motorcycle group Motorcycle Cowboys have re-solved to provide around-the-clock patrols of Bayridge Drive. Neigh-bours are keeping a vigilant eye on the flags throughout the day and some have set up 24/7 surveillance cameras facing the memorial. Still others, like Langille, intend to personally stand guard throughout the night.

Langille is surprisingly upbeat on this night; she’s been out in the

frigid night since 7p.m., after having already worked a full shift at work. But her strong personal connection with the project gives her strength and warmth.

Following in her late husband’s footsteps, their 17 year old son has also joined the military as an infantry reservist. “I support him 200 per cent,” she says. “Obviously as a mother and widow I have my hesitations…but Dave was such a huge role model, and so were all of his military friends, so there’s never been a question that the military would be part of his life.

“It’s emotional and overwhelm-ing,” she adds of the community support she’s witnessed. “It wasn’t planned that I was coming out here tonight, I just felt it was something that I needed to do.”

Those not able to keep vigil over the flags show their support in other ways. Dave McNamara from the Mer-chant Tap House, for example, stops by with food and a large goose feather jacket to help keep Langille warm through the night. Shane Ruys, a local real estate agent, stops by with coffee and muffins. Colleagues from Stepha-nie’s workplace deliver pizza, and many other locals deliver more cof-fee, donuts, energy drinks and a wide array of snacks. Many such stops end in tears and hugs.

“I think these are probably just kids,” she says of the culprits. “I

don’t think they’re out to intention-ally hurt anybody, I just think the military hasn’t touched their lives, or at least they don’t understand how it has. I think if they see me or others here, even if it’s in the dark from a distance, maybe it’ll make them think ‘Wow, this is actually important to somebody’, and think twice about do-

ing damage again.” If you’d like to help the organizers

of the Flags Of Remembrance me-morial in some way, you can contact them at [email protected]. If you believe you may have information related to the thefts, please contact Kingston Police at 613-549-4660.

Distraction keeps on driving

The American Automobile Asso-ciation Foundation for Traffic Safety recently released a report on distract-ed driving and it’s an eye-popper. The study involved 257 drivers and 10 popular 2015 model-year vehicles (Chev Equinox, Buick Lacrosse, Toyota 4Runner, Ford Taurus, Chev Malibu, VW Passat, Nissan Altima, Chrysler 200C, Hyundai Sonata, and Mazda 6). Each participant was giv-en one specific vehicle to take home for five days to practice with the In-Vehicle Information System (IVIS); the hands-free communication and HVAC and audio systems controls. At the end of the practice session, each driver returned the vehicle and completed a pre-set driving course and IVIS tasks accompanied by a videographer. Additional sensors and video cams were also installed for the test drive to quantify how much of a distraction the various IVIS systems provided to the task of driving. The tasks were rated by cognitive workload (how much men-tal effort was required to complete a certain job) and graphed on a scale of 2.37 to 4.57 (how quickly and easy or time-consuming and difficult). Cat-egory 1 tasks provided little distrac-tions and category 5 represented the max. The AAA Foundation consid-ers any distraction over 2.4 to be too much while driving.

The study revealed that the most difficult tasks and IVIS systems dis-tracted drivers for up to 27 seconds after the task was completed. This included such things as making or receiving a hands-free call, or ad-justing the audio system with voice commands, or sending or receiving a text message via audio links and voice commands. Even the easiest and most intuitive systems came in with a distraction rating of 2.4 and kept drivers minds off the road for up to 15 seconds after the task was com-

pleted. To put that into perspective, at a very low 25 mph speed a driv-er would travel the length of three football fields in traffic while being distracted for 27 seconds. A wide demographic range was used in se-lecting test subjects and older adults had more difficulty with the technol-ogy than their younger counterparts.

Automakers have consistently touted hands-free and voice-com-mand systems as the answer to driv-ing distractions caused by interactive technology and this AAA Foundation study firmly throws those notions under the bus. “Drivers should use caution while using voice-activated systems, even at seemingly safe mo-ments when there is a lull in traffic or the car is stopped at an intersec-tion,” said Marshall Doney, AAA’s President and CEO. “The reality is that mental distractions persist and can affect driver attention even after the light turns green.”

My own test for driving distractions was to try to remember any detail of traffic or surroundings I’d passed through while on a hands-free call, after completing such a call. Try it yourself and you’ll know why I don’t answer the phone when I’m driving.

“Hi Brian, I read your recent advice article re-

garding winter tires and found it very informative. I have a 2015 Camry XLE which comes with all seasons, sized P15/55/R17 and I’m shopping for winter tires. I have been advised, as you indicated in your piece, to go to a smaller tire for winters for the reasons you mention. In my case the recommended size is P205/65/16. I am leaning to Michelin X ICE xi3.

Your article didn’t touch on speed rating and load index. My all seasons have a speed rating of ‘V’ and the winters are rated at ‘T’. Is that some-thing I should be concerned about? The load index is about the same for the two tires (93 vs. 99). Secondly, will gas mileage suffer with the smaller winter tire vs. the wider all seasons?”

Thanks, Larry

I didn’t bring up speed or load

ratings as they make little difference for almost all winter drivers. For ex-ample your summer tire speed rating of V is good for 240 km/h and the T rating on your snows is for 190 km/h (ever think your Camry will travel that fast? In winter?) The winter tire is actually 0.7 per cent larger in cir-

cumference than the summer for your sizes. It shouldn’t affect fuel mile-age but keep in mind cold winter temperatures will.

Last Witch Hunter earns an ‘A’ with a ‘B’ movie plotBy: Mark Haskins

The Last Witch Hunter is the kind of modern day sword and sorcery you’d expect to see on Space late at night with a great big giant ‘B’ stamped all over it. Yet this is the best ‘B’ movie I’ve seen in a long time. Maybe ever.

Eight hundred years ago Kaulder (Vin Diesel) and a group of warriors set out to destroy the Witch Queen (Julie Engelbrect). Kaulder came face to face with the supernatu-ral terror, and defeated her. On the brink of death the Queen lashed out, and with her last strength cursed Kaulder with eternal life.

Kaulder has spent his immortality protecting humanity from witches

alongside a secret religious orga-nization called The Axe and Cross. Today, in the present, there’s a truce between humanity and witch kind. Kaulder works to keep the peace acting more like a police officer than a warrior.

All that changes when Kaulder’s watcher and chronicler, the 36th Dolan (Michael Caine), is attacked. The Axe and Cross always has a Dolan with Kaulder to guide and protect him. The current Dolan was set to retire when he was attacked, which is a coincidence Kaulder and the 37th Dolan (Elijah Wood) can’t ignore.

A witch calling himself Belail (Olafur Darri Olafsson) is seek-ing to resurrect the Witch Queen. It

falls to Kaulder, along with a young witch named Chloe (Rose Leslie), and the 37th Dolan to stop him. If they fail the Witch Queen will de-

stroy humanity. It’s no secret that Vin Diesel is

a huge Dungeons and Dragons fan. He’s been wanting to do a D&D movie for a long time, and while those plans have never come to fruition it looks like The Last Witch Hunter is it. This film feels a lot like a D&D campaign, but more than that it’s a good fantasy film. The story is a classic battle of good versus evil. The action is fantastic allowing Vin to do what he does best. The effects bring a startling and unique vision of evil to life. Each element is just really well done.

The cast is surprising. Michael Caine is not someone I’d expect to see in this kind of fantasy film. Yet having a talent like Caine can only

make your film better, which it does, and he has great chemistry with Die-sel. Much the same can be said for Elijah Wood as the 37th Dolan. Then there are the relative newcomers Olafur Darri Olafsson, Rose Leslie, and Julie Engelbrect who are great.

Vin Diesel has made a career out of playing the brooding hero, and this brooding hero is one of his best. I really like this character. I really like Diesel as this character, and I hope he manages to make two or three of these films.

The Last Witch Hunter may be a ‘B’ movie plot, but everything else is an A.

Mark Haskins’ column is a regular feature.

Providence Care calls on community members to fill walls of new hospitalBy Mandy [email protected]

News – Believe it or not, the new Providence Care hospital is set to open in just over 18 months and as progress continues, planners are asking community members to get more involved in the finished product and put their own personal

stamp on it.“We are asking community mem-

bers to submit photos for some of the spaces in the hospital,” ex-plained Krista Wells Pearce, direc-tor of redevelopment and planning for Providence Care. “These photos will appear on the interior screens throughout the hospital and origi-nally we had slated custom graphics

for those spaces, but our public re-lations team came up with the idea to get the community involved.”

The new hospital will be divided into three inpatient areas based on their location – Lakeside, Heritage and Parkside. Wells Pearce hopes to have at least three photos for each of the spaces and community mem-bers are being asked to submit pho-

tos to match the colour scheme and exterior views of each area.

“Heritage wing is situated clos-est to our heritage buildings so we have the interiors themed relative to that area with greys, stonework and we’d like photos that represent Kingston architecture,” explained Wells Pearce.

In line with those specifications, Lakeview photos should include lake activities, shoreline photos and colour schemes that are blue, purple or aqua and Parkside photos should contain greens and browns and photos of wildlife, park activi-ties and different park scenery.

“The only thing we aren’t so picky about is the season of the photos,” said Wells Pearce. “We’d really like to have a mix of sea-sons.”

Photos that are chosen through the contest will appear on small and large digital screens throughout the wings of the hospital and the name of the photographer will appear be-low each.

The deadline for submissions is Nov. 30 and Providence Care has

been working with Camera Kings-ton who will be supplying prizes for winning photos.

“By the end of November we will have some local photographers participating in the judging of the photos and we will make the selec-tions,” said Wells Pearce. “We’ve already had about 25 submissions and we are hoping for more.”

Above all, Wells Pearce hopes that this activity engages the com-munity more with the new hospi-tal.

“We have been trying to engage the community at every step be-cause it is their hospital and it will be serving them and their loved ones and friends and they contrib-uted significantly to the fundrais-ing,” she said. “Every time we have the opportunity to include people in this intense process we want to. This was a real no-brainer in terms of putting a call out to the commu-nity and getting people to send their art work.”

For a full list of rules for the con-test and how to submit visit www.providencecare.ca

www.novahealthnaturopathic.com

Complementary medicine continues to increase

in popularity as more and more patients find it

offers safe and effective treatment for their

health conditions, including difficult to treat

chronic diseases. Naturopathic Doctors (NDs)

are at the forefront of providing the highest level

of this medical care.

The scope of practice of an ND includes full

physical examinations, blood work, acupuncture,

nutritional guidance, and offers patients

botanical and neutraceutical therapeutic options

as opposed to pharmaceuticals. Intravenous

therapy for the treatment of cancer and other

chronic diseases are also offered by NDs.

Evidence supporting natural therapies continues

to grow as more and more medical studies are

performed. These studies and research articles

can be found in a variety of medical journal

publications.

NDs are highly trained, licensed primary health

care providers with 8 years of university

education that is similarly structured to that

of medical doctors. Education starts with

a university undergraduate degree and is

followed by 4 years of study at an accredited

medical school which includes all conventional

medical courses as well as naturopathic

modalities such as Traditional Chinese medicine,

pharmacognosy (botanical medicine), clinical

nutrition, and counseling. Training also involves

a 1-year clinical internship where NDs work with

patients under the supervision of other doctors.

With this education NDs can combine standard

medical training with the broad range of natural

therapies, to find the root cause of disease and

help patients achieve their health goals. NDs

treat a wide variety of conditions and diseases

including: obesity – diabetes – cancer - heart

disease – fibromyalgia - depression and anxiety

- women’s health issues such as infertility and

PCOS – arthritis - pediatric aliments inclusive of

autism – ADHD - food allergies - skin problems -

colds and flu. Support, guidance, and nutritional

counseling are offered to those interested in

general health promotion and weight loss.

Appointments with NDs are covered by employer

group benefit plans. Even if you have a family

doctor, your ND can complement your health

care with naturopathic treatment options.

NDs are licensed health care practitioners that

offer safe and effective treatments for your

health concerns. These treatments can be used

in combination with conventional treatments or

on their own. Make an appointment with an

ND today to explore your alternative treatment

options to obtain optimal health.

22 Frontenac Gazette - Thursday, November 5, 2015

Mother knew long winter months ahead would mean being shut in

It was happening again. In my mind’s eye I could see back to the year before. It seemed to happen when the weather changed from warm sunny days to a snap in the air, and when flakes of ice formed all around the watering trough in the barnyard.

I just couldn’t put my finger on it, but I was old enough to know there was a change in Mother, and it happened at the same time of the year. What could it be? What had brought it on?

Maybe she was worried that we would have enough food to last us over the coming winter. But that couldn’t be. The cellar was full of preserves and canned vegetables, the smoke house full of meat, and the big barrel of sauerkraut was already out in the summer kitchen beside the smaller barrel of pickled herring. No, it couldn’t be because

Mother was worried about our starving to death. But there was no doubt there was a change in her, and I could feel it in the very depth of my bones.

My older and much wiser sis-ter Audrey, if she sensed it too, wouldn’t talk about it. All she said was ‘it will pass’, as if that would satisfy me, which it didn’t.

Mother stopped playing her har-monica in the evening. She would bring her diaries down out of the back-to-the-wall cupboard, open one, and never raise a pencil to write in it.... just staring at a blank page. She would tap the end of the pencil on the oilcloth covering the table, and it would make a steady ‘plop, plop’, and I would watch her closely, but not a word was put in her diary.

She still made our meals. They were as hearty as ever. There were still rows of pies on the bake table, and the smell of fresh bread met us as we came home from the Northcote School. None of that changed.

It was Mother herself who had changed, and I got an ache in the pit

of my stomach and when we said our silent prayers in bed, I prayed that whatever was bothering my mother would go away.

And then one day, it was a Sun-day, and we had come home from church, changed into our better-than-school clothes, when Mother sent Audrey up to the trunk in the hall and asked her to bring down the big white linen tablecloth. The white linen tablecloth? It was only used at Easter and Christmas, and was one of Mother’s most cherished possessions, which she had brought from New York when she moved to Renfrew County.

She took a blue glass pitcher out of the parlour, which sat next to the bible and put it in the centre of the table. It too had come from New York. She told Audrey to set the table and to use the dishes that had come in bags of puffed wheat from Briscoe’s General Store. The table looked like we were expecting the Queen for dinner!

Mother changed into a velvet dress. It too had come from New York, and was only worn for very special occasions. Father, who

wasn’t much for any change to his routine, or for fancying up the house, said nothing. He had been through this before. We sat down at the table with its shiny linen ta-blecloth, as many matched dishes as Audrey would find, and our usual ample dinner. Supper would be the same as it always was on a Sunday night: a repeat of the noon meal.

After we had redded up the kitch-en, the white table cloth put with the pile of laundry awaiting the Monday wash, the lamps lit, shoot-ing shards of light into the corners of the darkening room, Mother went to the back door and opened it wide. The cold night air blew in. She stood there, quietly, for the longest time looking out into the black yard. Then she sighed, as if it was coming from her boot tops, and closed the door and just stood there quietly, saying nothing.

Then she took down her diaries, and her scrapbooks, sharpened her pencils with a kitchen knife, and began to write. I couldn’t say she had completely lost that melan-choly look, but I was relieved to see that her mood had changed. It was

almost as if she was saying “so be it”, a phrase she used often.

When we went to bed I begged Audrey to tell me what had hap-pened. She put her face close to my ear so that no one but me could hear and she told me that just before Fall changed to Winter, our mother knew that for months ahead of her, she would be shut inside our old log house. There would be no escape, and that was the time she longed most for her beloved New York. Audrey said, Mother would be al-most sick with loneliness for the life she used to have so far away. When Audrey told me I fell asleep with tears wetting my pillow.

The Crystal Ball—making dreams come true

In a dark corner of the grand hall of the Crystal Ball, tears made their presence known in the corners of my eyes as I watched 15-year-old Sophia Kendall, along with other young cre-ative artists, walk a winding path to the main stage in a room filled with applause. People stood and cheered. After many months working with her in a mentorship program, Sophia was on her own.

From Sophia’s perspective: “The Crystal Ball Gala was such an amaz-ing experience. I remember when I first auditioned; there was the feeling of doubt. I would dream about what it would look like, standing up by the stage while everyone applauded. All the glittering dresses and tuxedos. That’s exactly what it was like, and the feeling I got inside was so incred-ible. I finally know what ‘proud of myself’ truly feels like.”

Before that moment of glamour and glitz, Sophia and I shared many hours and months of hard work. Then, on the evening of the Crystal Ball, Sophia got to stand by her art, a stun-

ning photograph, and take questions from the many guests at the gala.

At the Crystal Ball Gala in support of the Limestone Learning Founda-tion, the K-Rock Centre transforms into a Disney-like castle. From top to bottom, the term “decorated” hardly does it justice. It’s mysteriously transformed. The halls of the giant arena sparkled. Guests could easily imagine that they were inside Casa Loma.

The Crystal Ball is a black tie af-fair in support of The Limestone Learning Foundation. The charitable organization funds special education projects in the areas of literacy and numeracy, science and technology, the arts, and innovative practices.

According to Co-Chair Pamela Hart, this year 52 community men-tors worked with more than 70 stu-dent mentees across an array of dis-ciplines, including visual arts, music, design, media and culinary.

“In 2011, we began with 10 musi-cal mentors and expanded in 2013 to the areas of art, music, culinary and journalism,” said Hart. “The mentor-ship opportunities have grown expo-nentially in 2015.”

After the February 26 announce-ment at the K-Rock Centre of the mentorship pairings, we got to work quickly. Sophia, who had trained at Kingston School of Dance, had al-

ready been working with me as a dancer in the year-long Ballerinas Dancing in the Streets photography project. She began to work as a pho-tographer as the program morphed into the Street Ballerinas Perfor-mance Art Project, which combines photography and dance/ballet with other forms of creative arts. Dancers perform alongside artists and musi-cians at work on their own creations.

In April, during a photo session in which Sophia modeled as a bal-lerina, I watched, already feeling proud, as she removed her tutu and donned street clothes over her dance gear, and then climbed to the ceiling beams of Kingston School of Dance to take photographs of dancers far be-low on the ground. A certain quirk of this scene brought a smile: As Sophia balanced overhead, she still wore her ballet pointe shoes.

Sophia’s first experience with me on a journalism assignment was for a story for this newspaper. I’ll let her describe it: “Our first assignment was to go to St. John XXIII school and photograph the ducks that nest in their courtyard every year. The stu-dents stand side by side to create a wall to guide the ducks down to the marsh near the school. There was one little duck that kept getting lost, which was perfect for getting the types of pictures that I like. I prefer

innocent pictures that focus on one subject. The reason this was such a great event to photograph is that it was very relaxed but fast-paced.”

Gradually, it became clear to So-phia that she’d have to make a choice between two of her interests: eques-trian and dance. She chose to pursue her equestrian skills.

“After moving onto horseback rid-ing, [the photography] experience was even better, because I could see everything Mark was doing the en-tire time instead of worrying about posing. At this point, I had advanced enough to be taking my own pictures and not following Mark, but still feel confident in my work.”

In the summer I was in charge of the photography sections of the Tett Centre’s Arts By the Lake program. Sophia volunteered to assist through-out the two weeks. There were mo-ments when my voice was giving

out. Sophia saw this and at times took over from me mid-sentence, teaching our young attendees about the photography concepts we wanted to share.

One of my favourite moments in the mentorship program came during the Limestone City Blues Festival.

In reflecting on the mentorship, the festival was also one of Sophia’s favourite events.

“Mark had gotten press passes to go backstage. I was over the moon with excitement when he told me. It was so cool, and I learned so much from being able to go backstage and work in the real world. There were a lot of other photographers, so learn-ing how to respect their space while still getting the pictures was perfect for teaching a teenager who wants to be a photographer/journalist.”

During the Opening Reception for the Crystal Ball Art Exhibition at the Tett Centre, Sophia Kendall stands beside the photo she created during her Limestone Learning Foundation mentorship process.

The Crystal Ball—making dreams come trueThe highlight that night in the mar-

ket square behind Kingston City Hall? We’d been on site a few hours: back-stage, rubbing shoulders with famous blues musicians, on stage, and out in the crowd taking photographs of the overall scene. When we were in the crowd, So-phia told me she was going to go back-stage again, as she wanted more close range photographs.

She didn’t know it, but I stood and watched her make her way back to the main stage, use her press pass to get be-yond security staff, and, a few moments later, stealthily move into position on

stage, not in anyone’s way, but in po-sition for some great photographs. At that point, the mentorship was com-

plete. As of the Blues Fest experience, I had a colleague with the skill and con-fidence to do it on her own. She knows she still has much to learn. But, in truth, so do I. One can never learn all there is to know about cameras and photograph-ic processes.

At any event or photo session, I in-creasingly felt like I had a professional colleague, rather than a teenaged stu-dent with me. That says a lot about the professionalism of this young woman.

When we finally came to choosing a piece of art to submit for the Crystal

Ball exhibition, it wasn’t an easy deci-sion. Sophia had many to choose from. The work she selected is beautiful. I showed it to some artists in the Tett Cen-tre who told me I’d created a beautiful image. Jaws dropped when I told them it wasn’t mine; it was entirely Sophia’s work, from the planning to the taking. During a photo session, we’d been working with ballerina/model Holly Crowson in the Tett Centre’s rehearsal hall, using beautiful limestone walls as a backdrop. Sophia decided to take pho-tographs of Holly playing the Steinway piano, with a fog machine providing a cloud-like atmosphere. One of those photographs became Sophia’s submis-

sion to the Crystal Ball exhibition.During the Opening Reception of

the Crystal Ball Art Exhibition at the Tett Centre in mid-October, hundreds of people visited the exhibition hall as the art simultaneously went up in an auction, with proceeds going to the Limestone Learning Foundation.

“We have been overwhelmed by the wonderful stories that both the mentors and mentees have shared with us,” said Hart. “The common theme amongst the mentorship teams is that it has been a huge success on both parts. The men-tors and their students feel their lives have been enriched from the experi-ence, and many will continue to stay

in touch.”When the final numbers are tallied, the

Limestone Learning Foundation hopes to have raised about $150,000 through Gala tickets sales, a silent auction event and the online auction of the artworks created by the Crystal Ball mentees.

Where is Ms. Sophia Kendall head-ed? She’ll be a great photographer and journalist. She’s also a bright, caring, playful and deeply sensitive young woman. The world is open to her. She also has all the qualities that one would expect of an ideal teacher (or mentor).

Wherever she ends up, she’ll bring goodness and creativity into the world.
