Rainy June brought most area lake levels up but there are exceptionsBy Craig BakayReporter

News mdash When it comes to lake levels a lot of it depends on where you are at a given time mdash like when itrsquos raining

It has been a rather wet June this year Environment Canada reports (the Kemptville climate station the closest to our area) that there were 141 millimetres of rain and a mean temperature of 169 degrees Compare that to the historical average of 939 millimetres and 205 degrees The temperature is important for lake levels because the higher the temperature the more evaporation there is

Gord Mountenay water management supervisor for the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVC) said that ldquowe have had a lot of rain particularly in the upper Mazinaw area and generally speaking lake levels have returned to what we consider normal

ldquoCrotch Lake is fullrdquo He said that Mazinaw Shabomeka and

Kashwakamak lakes in particular were ldquohit hard with rainfall and we had to pull some logs (from the regulatory dams) because we had somewhat flood conditions for about a weekrdquo

However not all the lakes in that area are up and thatrsquos where things get interesting

Mississaganon the lake just north of Kashwakamak and Big Gull just south are both

down about 4 inches each ldquoWe had the dams shut off on Mississaganon

and Big Gullrdquo he said ldquoTherersquos virtually no water going out of them

ldquoEven though we didnrsquot have the heat and evaporation I donrsquot see either Mississaganon or Big Gull filling up soon unless they get the rainrdquo

It all depends on how much rain we get and where it falls he said

ldquoItrsquos been an interesting summer so farrdquo he said ldquoThe experts we talked to said it was going to be the hottest June in a long time

ldquoI think they might have been a little bit offrdquo But he said if Mississaganon and Big Gull

Lakes had had the rainfall the upper Mississippi Valley got theyrsquod be at lsquonormalrsquo levels too

But all that rain did bring lake levels up on many lakes Sharbot Lake for example is about 4 inches higher than lsquonormalrsquo

But Mountenay cautions folks to take the Sharbot Lake levels ldquowith a grain of saltrdquo

He said unlike Mazinaw which has been monitored since the 1960s there are only about 10 years of data for Sharbot Lake

ldquoTen years is not a lot of datardquo he said ldquoSome of the old timers whorsquove lived on the lake might remember very different levels depending on what they use as a frame of reference to measure it such as their dock or shoreline

ldquoIrsquom sure levels were much different in the rsquo60s and rsquo70srdquo

Itrsquos not loneliness that keeps long-distance runners runningBy Craig BakayReporter

News mdash Why do you run Ask a long-distance runner that question

and therersquos a better than average chance yoursquoll just get a blank stare Even when they think about it itrsquos often like theyrsquove never really pondered the question

Take 75-year-old Sean Sheehan for example This year hersquos run 16 5K races in Florida (13 firsts three seconds and a third) He says he doesnrsquot train because the bakery in Plevna keeps him too busy

Nevertheless he was in the lineup when the horn sounded for the Canada Day Run in Sharbot Lake last week

ldquoI do it to support local charitiesrdquo he said ldquoAnd I like supporting this one

ldquoI like the way the money is distributedrdquo (Proceeds from the Canada Day Run go towards purchase of adult outdoor fitness equipment to be placed along the K amp P Trail in Sharbot Lake)

When pressed further hersquoll tell you he started running as a kid while working in copper mines adding ldquoit keeps me fitrdquo

His son Kevin and grandson Liam also came down from Ottawa to run in the 5K

ldquoItrsquos amazing him running at his agerdquo Kevin said ldquoMy sport is soccer but this (running) is good support for that and itrsquos a

nice experiencerdquo ldquoHe wants to challenge merdquo said Sean

who beat both son and grandson Liam on the other hand has a slightly

different take ldquo(Running) is one of my favourite sportsrdquo

he said Everyone got medals for this run but thatrsquos

not why they do it either ldquoItrsquos fun I like to racerdquo said 10-year-old

Cadell Wyncoll who won the 2K race ldquoI like getting exerciserdquo said her sister

six-year-old Siena who came sixth ldquoNobody in their right mind would runrdquo

said Jeff Green whose major motivation for winning the 10k race was that his arch-nemesis Rudy Hollywood was relegated to the 2k walk because of an injury

ldquoWhy do I runrdquo said Green ldquoI donrsquot know any better

ldquoMy car got towed ldquoTherersquos no good reasonrdquo And speaking of Hollywood who along

with his wife Joan is well known for running triathlon and being the major force behind the fundraising efforts for the acquisition of adult fitness equipment - he didnrsquot really have an answer but he will admit to being a fitness advocate

ldquoItrsquos a long storyrdquo he said ldquoTherersquos nothing better than leading by example

ldquoYou expose your children to as many

sports as possible and let nature take its courserdquo

He really didnrsquot start running until Joanrsquos father Bob Murray died of cancer and they got involved in the Terry Fox Run His kids joined the track club and eventually that evolved into Kid of Steel Triathlon and organizing all sorts of events

ldquoIrsquod run in the dark until I got into shaperdquo he said ldquoEverybody has different reasons for running

ldquoBut when you get older you have only two reasons either you donrsquot like the way you look in the mirror or your doctor says you have to

ldquoThere are so many health benefitsrdquo

There were 56 participants in this yearrsquos run which included a 2k walk a 2k run a 5k run and a 10k run

News mdash This yearrsquos Canadian Guitar Festival is the 11th incarnation of the event Itrsquos been moved up a weekend

(to July 24 25 and 26 from the Aug 1 long weekend) for a couple of reasons not the least of which is the availability of performers

up in the air and suddenly the economy and world geopolitics come into viewrdquo says Del Vezeau who along with fingerstyle guitar guru Don Ross started the competitionfestival 12 years ago in the parking lot of the Odessa Fair Itrsquos since moved to Vezeaursquos Loughborough Lake Holiday Park where the giant Quonset hut makes for a much more pleasant experience in the afternoon sun

The date change did cost them perennial MC Holmes Hooke who was to committed to his godsonrsquos graduation exercises in Rhode Island that weekend However in Hookersquos absence Ross will be filling in as MC as well as doing his regular

performance on Saturday night

News mdash Preparations for Frontenac Countyrsquos 150th Anniversary Celebrations Aug 28- 30 in Harrowsmithrsquos Centennial Park are going well but they could still use a few more volunteers and vendors says Alison Vandervelde the Countyrsquos communications officer

ldquoAs for vendors wersquore looking for anything and everythingrdquo she said ldquoThat could mean anything from businesses that make things and sells them for profit to things like 4H clubs andor any other community organizations and groups

ldquoLocal businesses and groups would be great but we do have some space available for vendors from outside the Countyrdquo

As to volunteers she said local service clubs are ldquotaking care of the big things like parking etc but we sure could use some lsquofloatersrsquo people to do customer service type volunteer work

County Some like the Old House Museum on Wolfe Island reported that they drew what they would normally draw on this date or 30 visitors

However others like Railway Heritage Park (The Caboose) in Sharbot Lake reported a whopping 75 visitors Other venues in the area reported good turnouts such as 40 at the K amp P Trail in Harrowsmtih 50 at St Paulrsquos United

Church in Harrowsmith 23 and 21 at the Sydenham Library and South Frontenac Township Council chambers respectively 33 at the Princess Anne Building in Hartington 19 at Bedford Hall in Godfrey 20 at the Bradshaw School House in Bradshaw 32 at the Kennebec Community Hall in Arden and 29 at the Cloyne Pioneer Museum and Archives

ldquoUnrdquoFair Elections Act gets its day in court

Last week two different advocacy groups sought an injunction in the Ontario Superior Court against certain provisions of the Fair Elections Act passed by parliament last fall Specifically they wanted provisions disallowing voters to use their voter information card as proof of identification to vote expunged as well as some of the new provisions forcing voters to produce certain forms of government issued identification A decision should be handed down on July 20

We sincerely hope that they are successful in their appeals for we believe this is truly one of the most odious pieces legislation to be passed into law by this government Statistics shows that around 15 per cent of people donrsquot have driverrsquos licenses and that goes up past 20 per cent for voters aged 25 and younger The new legislation will also make if much harder for people who move close to an election as they may not be able to procure identity with both their picture and name on it The practice of vouching for a fellow voter will also become much more difficult as the new legislation requires the person vouching to be from their exact polling district In fact one elections expert former BC chief electoral officer Harry Neufeld has estimated that the legislation could disenfranchise as many as 250000

Proponents of the Fair Elections Act legislation often cite rampant voter fraud as the prime reason for enforcing these added administrative burdens But just how rampant is it Neufeld wrote a report for Elections Canada which found no evidence that there have been more than a handful of cases of deliberate voter fraud in either federal of provincial elections - perhaps even fewer than one instance per election

It is for these reasons that we hope the groups get their injunction Voter ID laws are a blight upon every jurisdiction that enforces them for they disenfranchise those whose voices are already not being adequately represented youth seniors Indigenous people new Canadians the homeless and people with disabilities

Looking for summer reading suggestions The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings

Column mdash Know whatrsquos a real shame Itrsquos a shame that an entire generation will grow up thinking that six movies are what Middle Earth is all about

J R R Tolkien wrote four books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings mdash (He wrote several others too but Farmer Giles of Ham is hardly great literature) mdash that literally created a new realm of storytelling

One interesting aspect of LOTRH is that Tolkien managed to create an entire world that seems just so believable Itrsquos incredibly easy to lose yourself in Middle Earth as many ex-hippies will attest

Before Middle Earth there were a few other alternate worlds floating around But Edgar Rice Burroughsrsquo Barsoom Lewis Carrollrsquos Wonderland and C S Lewisrsquos Narnia while fascinating donrsquot seem to consume a readerrsquos imagination the way Middle Earth does

So what is it that makes Middle Earth so compelling

It might be argued that the way Tolkien tells the story has a lot to do with it

First of all if you take a modern course on writing fiction chances are yoursquoll end up believing that the majority of what Tolkien did was wrong

Many successful novels have been cranked out using the Marshall Plan and in fact there is merit in the analysis of successful novels and creating a formula from common elements

But we always have to come back to the 150 million copies of LOTR printed and LOTR doesnrsquot fit most lsquoformulasrsquo for successful writing

Perhaps the greatest example of this is the part of LOTR where the hobbits meet Tom Bombadil

The movies (both Peter Jacksonrsquos trilogy version and Ralph Bakshirsquos animated version) ignore Bombadil completely And according to many writing formulas this is exactly the right thing to do As the advice goes chop anything that doesnrsquot directly move the story along

Similarly the ending of Jacksonrsquos film version kills off Saruman prematurely and completely leaves out the hobbitsrsquo return to The Shire Presumably Jacksonrsquos ending was more palatable to those in control of

the movie industry who seem to really like formula writing

Now this isnrsquot to say that the movies totally suck On the contrary theyrsquore quite entertaining on a superficial level But they arenrsquot as compelling as the books

And we wonrsquot even mention all the crap added to The Hobbit to stretch it out to three movies to maximize profits under some corporate comptroller lsquoformularsquo (Who the hell came up with that ridiculous elf-dwarf unfulfilled love story anyways)

Looking back at the novels it seems there is a place for lsquoepisodesrsquo that seemingly donrsquot move the story along When the hobbits succumb to Old Man Willow and are rescued by Bombadil we not only get a sense of the age of magic and its importance to this world but also itrsquos a transitional stage for the hobbits a kind of loss of innocence

Similarly when they return to The Shire they are fully grown fully capable and theyrsquove certainly come of age mdash all in a world that somebody just made up

But your kids wonrsquot know this if theyrsquove only seen the movies

Say herersquos an idea mdash this summer read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to your kids

I totally danced it my experience as a Pan Am torchbearer

I was initially a little nervous at the idea of being a torchbearer for Kingston in the Pan Am Games Torch Relay Irsquom not much of an athlete and most of the other torchbearers Irsquod met or heard about were accomplished ath-letes andor had done something significant in their community to earn this honour

For me the opportunity came up in a less glamorous way I work for Metroland which is the official print and online media supplier for the Pan Am Games they needed someone to represent etc I pictured everyone being all lsquowhatrsquos SHE doing there Who does she think she isrsquo

In the weeks leading up to the Kingston re-lay I followed the torchrsquos progression through other cities and gradually became less nervous A few of the torchbearers were famous but most were just everyday people Plus there were 3000 of us in total including 11 right here in Kings-ton It was unlikely anyone would think twice about me doing this let alone care enough to question whether I was de-serving of the honour

So by the time I went to meet the relay convoy at Fort Henry late in the afternoon on July 2 the butterflies in my stomach were more excited than nervous The excitement grew after I changed into my white and orange uni-form and began chatting with my fellow torchbearers There were a few particu-larly lsquonotablersquo people ndash like rower Rob

Gibson who was leaving in a few days to compete in the Pan Am Games himself and Michele Kehoe who was chosen by the com-munity in recognition of the physical activity and healthy living programs she runs for ab-original youth ndash but most were regular folks like me who were lucky enough to stumble upon this incredible opportunity

We all piled into a bus that took us down-town and were dropped off at our respective stations a few minutes ahead of the torchrsquos arrival My parents daughter and grandma were all there to watch as was my dear friend Julie and her children who made a special sign in my honour My husband Steve was notably absent ldquoHe thought he left the oven on and went home to checkrdquo my mom in-formed me Classic Steve

I was sad he would miss it but my atten-tion was quickly captured by the fast ap-proaching convoy complete with a media van pumping upbeat popular music lsquoSugarrsquo by Maroon 5 was playing and all I wanted to do was dance Prior to the relay wersquod been

encouraged to have fun savour the moment and do something unique if the moment felt right so I danced for the first few metres It felt amazing

When Irsquod had enough of hamming it up I started running I wish Irsquod run more slow-ly because 200 metres really isnrsquot that far I blinked and it was over I helped light Al Cant-layrsquos torch turned around and someone was there waiting to take the torch from my hands (No I didnrsquot pay the $500 to buy it)

Now that itrsquos over I can say with confi-dence that the torch relay will be a major highlight of 2015 for me Irsquom proud of get-ting through it without tripping or setting myself or something else on fire (I was quite literally concerned something like this would happen)

More than that though it was exhilarating to be a part of something so huge I had a lot of fun made some new friends and have some snazzy new torch relay-themed running shorts to show for it

News ndash It is estimated that 315000 Canadians are currently living with the effects of stroke many of these effects are long-term and require life adjustments for both the survivor and their family To cope with these adjustments the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) offers a wide variety of support groups geared towards survivors caregivers and spouses

The VON in Kingston has been running these support groups since November of 2013 and while the groups are well-attended there is still a need to get more members of the community involved

ldquoWe know that there are a lot of people who donrsquot know about them and could use the supportrdquo explained Kathleen Pratt stroke services coordinator in Kingston ldquoAfter leaving the hospital and going back home it can be really hard during recovery and these groups can help a lotrdquo

Stoke survivor Mary Lindt sought support after her stroke two years ago and after attending a workshop she discovered the spousal support group She began attending with her husband Emil and she feels that it has helped a lot

ldquoI wanted him to understand more about what I was going through and get tips for taking care of merdquo said Lindt ldquoIt is enjoyable for both of us and it has helped me to hear from others how they are feeling and doing It makes me feel less alonerdquo

The informal group meets once a week Couples come to a session if they can and discuss their experiences their obstacles and how they are managing

ldquoIt has helped us connect more as a couple and he has gained a lot of perspectiverdquo said Lindt ldquoIt also allows you to see that every stroke is different and requires different levels of attentionrdquo

VON also offers support groups for spouses who are on their own and are either working as primary caregivers to a stroke survivor or dealing with their spouse being in a facility due to stroke For Joyce Kelsey the latter is the case Her husband had a stoke

six years ago and it left him paralyzed on the right side

ldquoIt was pretty devastatingrdquo she said ldquoWhile he was in the hospital I saw a poster about a stroke conference I attended and then I found out about the support group It has been invaluablerdquo

Kelseyrsquos husband is in a long-term care facility so she is not the primary care giver for him but she is still very involved in his care The support group makes her feel less alone and also gives her hope for the future

ldquoIrsquove gained a lot in terms of companionship and support through the group sessionsrdquo said Kelsey ldquoIt also gives me a lot of hope hearing other peoplersquos stories They know how hard it can be and people who have been through it are sometimes more helpful than family and friends who have notrdquo

Overall the goal of the groups is to provide support and share experiences Pratt hopes that the groups are fulfilling for patients spouses and caregivers and she hopes others will see the value in them too

ldquoWe want more people to seek out this support Once a patient leaves the hospital there isnrsquot much support but these groups can help a lotrdquo

VON also runs a peer visiting group for stroke survivors and they are launching a new exercise program for survivors this fall For more information about all the services and support groups offered visit wwwvonca

News ndash Summer is a time to get outside enjoy the sunshine and maybe even learn a new sport the Sydenham Lake Canoe Club (SLCC) hopes that sport involves a paddle

ldquoOur season began on May 19 and we just started our summer camps

on June 22rdquo explained Helen Parfitt vice commodore of the Sydenham Lake Canoe Club ldquoWersquove seen less enrolment so far this year but we hope it picks up It is such a great sport and more people need to experience itrdquo

The SLCC started in 1997 and was originally part of the Cataraqui Canoe Club but as that club became more recreational the SLCC relocated and

started their own venture Now the volunteer run club operates out of small club house on donated land just off of the Cataraqui Trail in Sydenham

Parfitt has been working with the group for the past eight years and joined after her son and daughter took an interest in paddling Now with both of them grown Parfittrsquos focus is on training and coaching new paddlers

ldquoIt is so much fun to be in the water in a kayak or canoerdquo she said ldquoThe whole learning experience is really great for kids It teaches them about setting goals and they learn about positive feedback too when they reach those goalsrdquo

The SLCC runs day camps throughout the summer Each session lasts a week During that time kids learn the basics and then move up through different levels

ldquoIt is very similar to swimming lessonsrdquo said Parfitt ldquoThe kids go through the courses and they work up to bronze silver and gold levels throughout the weeks and they pick it up quite quicklyrdquo

The camp can accommodate 12-18 participants each week and Parfitt leads instruction with the help of coaches leaders in training and former students Bridget Ramzy is happy to be coaching this year and she hopes she can show kids how fun the sport can be

ldquoI originally got involved because of a friend I decided to try it out and I loved itrdquo said Ramzy ldquoIt is fantastic fun and a great way to be outdoors and active especially if you live in town and you arenrsquot near a lake very often You get to meet a lot of people and

there are a lot of transferable skills that you learn through this activityrdquo

Campers learn in mini boats that allow them to have more balance but still show how difficult the sport can be After mastering that they move up to larger boats that require more balance and skill The SLCC uses mainly carbon fibre boats but they also have some old-fashioned wooden boats that they use regularly

Students at the camp will learn the basic of water and dock safety too and Parfitt hopes that all of the skills they

pick up paddling will serve them well on the water and off

ldquoI think canoeing and kayaking is a really positive activity for these kids and I hope they learn discipline and how to maintain a positive attituderdquo she said ldquoWe also want the kids to have fun and being out on the lake all summer certainly is funrdquo

News ndash Staff and residents at Fairmount Home are seeing their hard work pay off the long-term care facility was recently

awarded Exemplary Standing by Accreditation Canada the highest standing for a facility of their kind

ldquoWe were just delighted that we did so wellrdquo said Emily Shoniker director of care ldquoThe assessment

happened back in January of this year we were originally rewarded the level down from exemplary but we worked hard and we got bumped up to the highest level last weekrdquo

Out of 504 criteria the home

missed only one and staff have worked hard over the last few months to improve its standing to exemplary

ldquoWe had to change the way in which we disposed of bio-hazard materialsrdquo explained Shoniker

ldquoThe exemplary standing requires whoever is disposing of that material to wear a gown Ihat is a small thing that we were able to make happenrdquo

The accreditation process is completely voluntary for facilities like Fairmount Home and only 67 long-term care facilities in Canada are actually accredited The assessment occurs once every three years and Shoniker sees it as an opportunity to let the community know how great Fairmount is

the areardquo she said ldquoIn the world of healthcare it is really important to strive to do better and provide excellent quality service and that is what this showsrdquo

Shoniker and the staff at Fairmount Home attribute much of their success to their approach to care the home and the staff

practice a Gentlecare philosophy ldquoIt is really a resident-focused

level of care and we try to allow the residents to make as many decisions as possible when it comes to their individual carerdquo explained Steve Silver interim administrator ldquoWe want them to feel like they have some input in terms of timing and get them involved in their own care I think that has a really positive effect on

the facility as a wholerdquoSilver said Fairmount Home

strives to be the long-term care home of choice in the area

ldquoWe have a long waiting list already but these enhancements also ensure our competiveness and progressiveness in long-term carerdquo he said ldquoWe want to do better than the standard and we want to improve as much as we can on a day-to-day and year-to-
