On behalf of the Carolina Donor Services Board of Directors and our outstanding staff, I want to thank you for the time, effort, and energy you gave in 2019. Because of you and the selflessness of our donors and their families, 2019 was a record-setting year for lives saved and healed by our collective efforts.
Record growth in donation is being driven by the following:
• more people registering their decisions at the DMV and online
• an increase in potential donors’ next of kin authorizing donation
• the recovery of more organs for transplant from donation after circulatory death (DCD)
• process improvement initiatives at Carolina Donor Services and partner hospitals
• drug-related overdoses which are, unfortunately, impacting our community
Despite this record-breaking year, we are not complacent or satisfied with the status quo. I can assure you that we are committed to excellence and ongoing process improvement.
Carolina Donor Services is devoted to ensuring every viable organ and tissue recovered will give someone a second chance at life. Trust is critical in saving lives and throughout the organ, eye and tissue donation process. It begins when those who register their decisions to donate at the DMV or online en-trust that their legal decision will be honored at their time of death. Addition-ally, registered donors and donor families who provide authorization place trust in the process that their organs, eyes, and tissues will be recovered and transplanted to those in need. During this record-breaking year, we are grateful to the families who entrusted us to maximize their loved ones’ heroic gifts.
We are proud that transplantation lets thousands of recipients return to work, become active in our communities, and live their lives to the fullest extent. Yet, we recognize that more must be done because nearly 3,000 men, women and children are waiting for lifesaving organ transplants in North Carolina.
Sincerely,
Danielle Niedfeldt, RN, JDPresident & CEOCarolina Donor Services
Community Relations Coordinator, Latoya Joyner and Hospital Development Specialist, Cynthia Daniels worked with Wayne UNC HealthCare to place a Donate Life themed tree in the hospital lobby to spark conversations amd awareness about organ, eye and tissue donation.
The Cone Health Collaborative Team created a Donate Life themed set-up for Halloween at the 3rd Annual Graham Recreation and Parks Department Pumpkin Bash.
Carolina Donor Services’ Friends for Life Ambassador, Monique Martin shared her journey as a living kidney donor and tissue recipient with Duke Hospital’s OR nurses.
Vidant Medical Center held a “Show Your Heart” Valentine’s Day photoshoot featuring staff. Valentine’s Day is also National Donor Day - a day to thank all donors, donor families, and registered donors.
REMEMBERING THOSE WHO GAVE THE GIFT OF LIFE
You are invited to open doors in your community by sharing your decision and the impact you have on saving lives, increasing the number of registered donors, honoring your loved one’s gift, or celebrating your second chance at life. Last year was remarkable, and we look forward to saving even more lives this year. I trust that you will join us. Thank you.

Carolina Donor Services’ Heart Heroes legislation became law on October 1, 2019 after being adopted by the General Assembly and signed by Governor Cooper. The red heart on North Carolina drivers’ licenses and IDs now includes tissue donation, along with organ and eye, repre-senting one’s legal decision to be a donor. Before October 1, 2019, North
Carolina was the only state in the nation where tissue donation was not included in the first-person authorization at the DMV.
Heart Heroes Legislation
The Eastern Carolina BBQ Throwdown in Rocky Mount, NC was a success in educating about organ, eye and tissue donation and registering new donors.
Carolina Donor Services shared information about organ, eye and tissue donation and the need for registered donors at FUMC Asheboro’s National Donor Sabbath service. The Hunts, a donor family in Asheboro, had the opportunity to meet the recipient of their son’s organs. Keaton gave the gift of life to Kathy Matthews, who received his liver and kidney.
In partnership with Vidant Medical Center and the Brody School of Medicine, Linking Hands, a yearly occurence, is a family friendly event that celebrates the gift of life and brings awareness to donation.
These items are one way that Carolina Donor Services shows gratitude to donor families. These keepsakes provide donor families with a lasting impression after their loved one has given life to others through organ, eye and tissue donation.

Thank you.
