DOVER-FOXCROFT - Southern Maine rock phenomenon “Whoopy Kat” will be headlining events at the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival, according to a Center Theatre announcement this week. Whoopy Kat is based out of Ellsworth and is one of the best known rock bands in Southern Maine.

“We’re thrilled to have Whoopy Kat at the Festival,” said Patrick Myers, Festival Organzier, “they play a wide variety of great music from the Beatles, to Foreigner, to the Rolling Stones and everywhere in be-tween.” Myers said he did not know about Whoopy Kat before planning for this year’s festival, but they were recommended by a number of musicians and when he contacted them they were excited to be part of the fun.

Besides Whoopy Kat on the music stage, the Varney Agency Kid’s Zone at the Whoopie Pie Festival will be Conjuring Carrol as well as comedy juggler Bryson Lang. Lots of rides and games, vendors and crafters will set up downtown. Will’s Shop ‘n Save, the offi cial grocer for the festival, will also have promotions. The Dover-Cove Farmers Market will be at Pine and South Streets and the Dover-Foxcroft Congrega-tional Church annual Rummage Sale will be at the church from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Pine Tree Hospice golf tournament will be at the Dexter Municipal Course June 28 and at Foxcroft Golf Club June 29.

Myers said he’s happy to have so many other attractions at the festival, but the focus will always be on Whoopie Pies. “We know what brings people to Dover-Foxcroft on June 28 – it’s the Whoopie Pies!

We’ll have more whoopie than ever at the festival with favorite bakers like Governor’s Restaurant and Al’s Pizza back again and new bakers coming to show off their creations. Admission to the festival is still $5 with kids 12 and under getting in free.”

For more information on the Whoopie Pie Festival, visit www.MaineWhoopiePieFestival.com. The Festival is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday June 28 and is produced by the Center Theatre for the Performing Arts.

DOVER-FOXCROFT - Foxcroft Academy’s Drama Ponies have announced their spring produc-tion of the full-length play “Vil-lains and Zombies” by Bradley Walton. The production is di-rected by Bobby Keniston, FA’s drama teacher.

“This is a unique script by Bradley Walton, who is a friend of mine,” Mr. Keniston said. “You see a lot of movies dealing with comic book super villains, and, obvious-ly, a lot of movies and television shows about zombies, but you rarely get to see something like this on the stage. It’s been a true pleasure bringing this graphic novel kind of story to life.”

This is the fi rst full-length non-musical spring production that Foxcroft Academy has done in years, and Mr. Keniston wanted to make sure it would be a play that had drama students ex-cited. Before offi cially choosing the script for production, he had several students read the play to gauge whether they would be interested in it. “Their response was overwhelming,” he said. “I have never seen students this excited about being part of a play before.”

The story revolves around a group of former super villains who have been in hiding for nine years returning to their old stronghold after a zombie apoca-lypse has taken over the world. Together again, they fi ght, mourn

their lost friends, and try to fi g-ure out how to survive against the zombies. “It’s like The Walk-ing Dead meets the Legion of Doom,” Keniston says. “It’s every comic book geeks’ dream come true, but also with challenging themes of loss, loyalty, redemp-tion, and love.”

This production features the talents of almost twenty students onstage and behind the scenes, as well as local theater profession-als Rhonda Kirkpatrick, design-ing the costumes and the ghastly zombie make-up, and Ed Hills, who is putting together a post-apocalyptic.

Keniston, who will be leaving Foxcroft Academy at the end of this school year, says he Is “proud to have this play as my swan-song. It’s the perfect way to say

goodbye to this wonderful school and to my students who I have cared so deeply about. What bet-ter send-off than to do a play that no one has ever seen the likes of before in Dover-Foxcroft?”

“Villains and Zombies” will be performed at the Center Theatre Friday May 16th and Saturday,

May 17 at 7 p.m. There will also be a 2 p.m. matinee performance on Sunday, May 18. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students.

On opening night, audience members who dress up as their favorite super hero, super villain, or zombie, will be admitted half-price.

SKOWHEGAN SAVINGS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION – The Foundation recently made a donation to the JMG’s fi nancial literacy programs. Pictured left to right Vicki Alward, Skowhegan Savings SVP Retail Banking; Craig Larrabee, Job’s for Maine’s Graduates President & CEO; Karen Hart, Skowhegan Savings Branch Manager.

SKOWHEGAN - Skowhegan Savings Charitable Foundation recently announced it has do-nated $10,000 to Jobs for Maine’s Graduates (JMG), a statewide non-profi t organization dedicated to helping local high school and middle school students who face barriers to education fi nd success, a meaningful career, and a pro-ductive adulthood. The donation will support JMG’s core fi nancial literacy program currently of-fered at 64 Maine schools.

Specifi cally, the donation from Skowhegan Savings Bank will be directed to JMG’s fi nancial lit-eracy programs at seven schools located in the communities the bank serves. These include: Mt. Blue High School, Carrabec High School, Carrabec Commu-nity School, Messalonskee High School (2 programs), Madison Memorial High School, Maine Central Institute and Warsaw Middle School.

“We are thrilled that Skow-hegan Savings Bank has chosen to award us with this gener-ous grant,” said Craig Larrabee, President and CEO of JMG. “But, fi nancial support is just a small part of what the Bank does for young people in their area. Skow-hegan Savings has partnered with JMG to develop a fi nancial literacy fair for three years in a row; they support our fi nancial literacy lessons in the classroom; and have helped us increase the number of students we serve in central Maine. Their investment

Skowhegan Savings donates $10,000 to Jobs for Maine’s Graduatesin young people in their commu-nity is unparalleled.”

JMG and Skowhegan Savings Bank have been partners for seven years and collaborated on a number of initiatives to help young people. In 2012, Skow-hegan Savings Bank partnered with JMG to host the fi rst-ever fi nancial literacy fair for seniors at Skowhegan Area High School. It featured real-world hands on activities such as balancing a budget and saving. The fair took place again this year at Skow-hegan Area High School on April 17th. To date, Skowhegan Sav-ings Bank through its Charitable Foundation has contributed al-most $37,000 to support JMG ini-tiatives in the local area. In turn, JMG has recognized Skowhegan Savings Bank for that support, nominating the bank last year for the national organization’s Cor-porate Above and Beyond Award,

which the bank received.“JMG is such an incredible or-

ganization and their programs are an important resource for Maine’s schools,” said John With-erspoon, Skowhegan Savings President & CEO. “What they do makes a big difference in the lives of these students; it really helps them realize their poten-tial while simultaneously giving them the confi dence to reach it. We are proud to be a part of it.”

Skowhegan Savings’ charitable giving program makes donations to both large and small local non-profi t and charity organiza-tions with a focus on fi nancial literacy programs and Economic and Community Development, including programs that promote job creation, business retention, business growth, and community enhancement. PAINT STUDIO GRAND OPENING EVENT!

By Anne H. CressMAINE - The General Federa-

tion of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) of Maine met at the Senator Inn & Spa in Augusta, May 8 and 9 for their Spring Convention. More than 70 women from around the state participated in this two-day event. Attending from the GFWC Cosmopolitan Club of Dover-Foxcroft was Suzanne Raymond. Nine members from the GFWC Miosac Club of Dover-Foxcroft attending were Vicki Moschella, Minnie McCormick, Athalie Burke, Dorothy Tonick, Carol Kilpatrick, Barbara Aus-tin, Rheba Michaud, Elaine Larson and GFWC Maine State President, Anne Cress. Three members attending from the GFWC Dexter Women’s Literary Club were Laura Neal, Corinne Neal and Jane Gilbert.

Special guest speaker was GFWC First Vice-President, Sheila Shea, from Marlborough, Massachusetts. Sheila has served as Dean of State Presi-dents during the 2012-2014 ad-ministration as a mentor and leadership guidance counselor to all fi fty of the State Presidents. On May 8, she brought “Greet-ings” from our GFWC Head-quarters in Washington, D.C. along with new ideas and plans to strengthen our organization. On May 9, Sheila spoke with the members at length on what being

a GFWC clubwoman is all about, and how it has evolved over the past 124 years. She talked about all the many things GFWC club-women have done to change the world such as getting the Child Labor Law enacted, promoting the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act, creating more than 75% of our libraries, creating the National Park Service, and pro-moting the installation of over one million seat belts in automo-biles in 1961. These are just a few of the things GFWC has done for the betterment of our citizens and our country.

The GFWC Maine women enjoyed a terrifi c presentation and slide show by Jane Elwell of Westbrook, who has been a vol-

unteer for Heifer International for more than eight years. Jane spoke of her trip to Lima, Peru a couple years ago, and how Heifer International has changed the lives of not just a few families, but of whole communities.

Penny DeRaps, a family nurse practitioner from Sebasticook Family Doctors in Canaan, pre-sented a wonderful talk about cardiovascular disease and risks in women following the evening banquet on May 8. Heart dis-ease is the number one killer of women, and is more likely to kill a woman than all the other cancers combined. This presen-tation was easy to understand

with a bit of humor added. Nine GFWC Maine clubwomen then presented a “Red Dress Fashion Show” wearing their own favor-ite red outfi ts, while Mrs. DeRaps read their individual stories as to how cardiovascular disease has affected them personally or someone they love. It was a very informative, entertaining, and emotional evening. GFWC has recently formed a new partner-ship with the Heart Truth Cam-paign, a grogram of the National Institute of Health, to give wom-en a personal and urgent wakeup call about their risk of heart dis-ease.

During this two day Conven-tion, club members heard reports from chairmen of the six com-munity service programs such as the Arts, Conservation, Edu-cation, Home Life, International Outreach and Public Issues. The members also heard from many of the GFWC Maine Standing and Special Committees such as the GFWC Signature Project: Do-mestic Violence Awareness and Prevention, Leadership, Mem-bership, Legislation and Public Policy, the Delegate’s Fund, the Endowment Fund, Maine Youth Leadership, Women’s Legislative Council, Public Relations and the President’s Special Project for this administration, “Newborns in Need.”

This being the end of a two-year term, President Anne Cress closed with fi nal remarks, as she thanked all the members of GFWC Maine, with special thanks to the GFWC Miosac Club, Minnie McCormick, her GFWC Maine Executive Com-mittee, and her husband, Bob, for their assistance in making this a very successful adminis-tration. She informed the mem-bers that together, GFWC Maine has completed during 2013 alone, 533 projects, volunteered 25,917 hours, raised and donated $90,924.00 and has given in-kind donations of $20,324.00. She stated, “We are Living the Volun-teer Spirit, and we ARE Making a Difference”! Her theme has been “Volunteer Stewards…Joyfully Serving and Giving to Others”. The dove has been the chosen symbol. President Cress stated, “This theme simply states who we are as GFWC Maine Club-women”. She was then presented with a quilt put together by fel-low clubwoman, Barbara Austin of Dover-Foxcroft. Each quilt square was made by each one of the twenty-two Clubs in Maine. A piece of the “dove” material used in the making of the jacket Anne wore two years ago when she was installed as State Presi-dent was used in some way in each square. Barbara was able to fi nd the same material in fl eece, which was used for the backing. The center square was an embroi-dered dove with the theme of her administration. President Cress was overcome with joy and emo-tion upon seeing this magnifi cent work of art!

The fi nal hour of the Conven-tion was the very touching and emotional Installation Service for the new State President, Marjo-rie Goodwin of Clinton, and her newly elected Executive Commit-tee. Marge’s theme for GFWC Maine will be, “Our Past Will De-termine Our Future”.

The website for GFWC is www.gfwc.org or our Maine website can be visited at www.gfwcmaine.org.

Things we want you to know: IMPORTANT 911 EMERGENCY RESPONSE INFORMATION. The U.S. Cellular Home Phone Device (“Device”) in conjunction with Home Phone Service (“Service”) (together the “U.S. Cellular Home Phone”) is a Commercial Mobile Radio Service and not a landline phone service. U.S. Cellular does not represent or warrant that the U.S. Cellular Home Phone is equivalent to landline phone service. 911 calls made using the U.S. Cellular Home Phone Service are routed using U.S. Cellular’ s automatic location technology and users should be prepared to provide their physical address to emergency responders. While the Device does contain a GPS chip, its connection may be limited due to the Device’s location within the home. The GPS chip will work best if the Device is located near a window or other opening. A corded or cordless landline phone must be connected to the Device in order to use the U.S. Cellular Home Phone to operate. A corded or Cordless landline phone is not included. While the Device does have a backup battery, if the landline phone to which the Device is connected requires external electric power to operate, Service (including the ability to make and receive 911 calls) will not be available during a power outage. Neither U.S. Cellular nor any of its affiliates shall be liable for any service outage and/or inability to access emergency service personnel, nor shall U.S. Cellular or any of its affiliates be responsible for the acts or omissions of emergenc ©2014 U.S. Cellular NonPromo_HomePhone_DI_7_5x16 75
