It has been an action-packed summer full of many miracles and exciting news includinglearning that an admirer of ours has named us in his estate plans and some corporatechampions pooled their resources with another non-profit to bless one of our clients with amuch needed vehicle to assist her on the road to self-sufficiency.

While we took time to celebrate, we remained focused on providing a safe haven to thosefleeing violence and vigilant in our work to shatter the silence of domestic violence. Every dayI am reminded of how important our work is and nothing drove that sentiment home morethan the tragic murder-suicide that claimed the life of a one-year-old boy in Joliet just a fewweeks ago. We must be relentless in our prevention work and advocacy efforts.

On the legislative front, new laws like the one that requires all licensed cosmetologists to betrained in DV Awareness and how to handle customer disclosure of abuse is a good exampleof our advocacy efforts. We helped pass that law and since it went into effect, the CrisisCenter has trained 1,942 professionals.

We expanded our Live Safe Patient Advocacy program and partnered with Christ Advocate’snew Trauma Center, resulting in increased and comprehensive services being readily availableto victims. We have been successful in engaging additional police departments in our LEAVprogram and now have 21 local departments that we train and work collaboratively with toreach each and every DV victim where a police report was completed. Our advocates regularlyreview over 400 police reports a month and get in touch with the survivors of these violentincidents to ensure that they know their legal rights and how to access services to help thembreak free from their abusive partners. We’ve also been busy educating our youth aboutdomestic violence. In the last year, we worked with 57 schools and provided almost 500students with intensive education on the cycle of violence and dating violence. We made surestudents knew where to turn and how to get help should it ever be needed.

Our resale stores not only generate revenue for our operations, but they also serve as safeplaces for victims to turn for help and assistance in a crisis. Our volunteers take pride inassuring that all 4,600 of our regular customers know we are here and available should theyor someone they know need our help to escape domestic violence. We recently invested in abillboard style window graphic at our Worth location to make sure the entire community wouldknow help is just a phone call away with our 24-hour hotline.

Thanks for always being on this journey with us! Together, we are collaborating, growing andresponding to the need to prevent violence in our communities!

    With gratitude,

    Pam Kostecki, Executive Director

    From our executive director

Wheels of HopeAmy broke down into tears when she learnedthat she would be receiving a new car. Shehad been dealing with unexpected break-downs, costly car repairs and otherheadaches as she attempted to keep heraging vehicle on the road. It was crucial forAmy to have dependable transportation inorder to live apart from her abuser. The CrisisCenter recognized that she would be a greatcandidate for a new vehicle through theGEICO/Crash Champions Recycled Ridesprogram and she was later selected as the recipient.

Amy came to the Crisis Center to avoid anabusive relationship with the father of herchild and she took advantage of many of theresources and programs that we provide. Shefound strength and motivation through ourCounseling program and she worked with acase manager to take advantage of ourTransitional Housing program. She and hertwo-year-old daughter now live in the farsouthern suburbs and she has been driving25 miles each way for day care and to herplace of employment. Not only did she need

reliable transportation for child care andwork, but she also has to meet the need ofsafely transporting her daughter to southernIllinois for court-mandated visits.

Amy’s story began to spread and it inspired anumber of business owners and communitymembers to take action. We are proud toannounce that Amy has not only received adependable new vehicle, but she was alsogifted toys for her daughter, a car seat andmultiple gift cards for gas, stores, and oilchanges totaling over $1,000! Amy has a newoutlook on her future, and a brand new way todrive down the road that lies ahead.

LaShonda Crockett and her daughter provide adelicious chicken dinner for our clients.

    Lifting Us Up

    Crisis Center Auxiliary

Local civic clubs and business owners teamup to provide a lift gate for our truck

Operating a 35-bedEmergency Shelter, 15 TransitionalHousing units and two resale storesinvolves a lot ofmoving parts…and a lot of sweat andelbow grease!

As clients move on to new housing, there are manyitems that need to be moved from one location toanother. This became much easier when UnitedInsurance Services President Scott Farrow giftedthe Crisis Center a new box truck in August of2018. Since then, we’ve been able to transportlarger items and accept some furniture for ourresale stores.

The box truck did not have a lift gate which wouldallow for safer and easier transportation, but whenword spread that the Crisis Center was looking toinstall one, Orland Park Rotary President Bill Pagliahelped lead the charge and the ‘Lift Me Up’campaign was created. United Insurance Services, the Orland Park Rotary, Moraine Valley Rotary andOrland Park Kiwanis teamed up to cover the costand Scott Kallemyn of Kallemyn Collision connectedus to a supplier to help us get a great deal.

Crisis Center Director of Development Lorri Naglesaid, “It’s heart-warming to see people cometogether to solve an issue and help an organizationlike ours. This lift gate will make a big difference inour daily operations and our maintenance crew(Kevin, Dave and Ace) might be the most thankful of all!”

Nagle added that as soon as the lift gate isinstalled, an unveiling and reception will be held tothank our generous donors.

Crisis Center Seeking Volunteer Groups to

Serve and Prepare MealsLaShonda Crockett considers herself blessed. Sheis a highly-educated woman and college professor, has a thriving business, Pennie’s Tea, a beautifuldaughter, and she is a survivor of domestic abuse. She called the Crisis Center several months agoand said, “I just want to give back.” And she isdoing just that.

The Crisis Center is seeking volunteer groups toprepare and serve meals to residential clients livingat our shelter. This is an opportunity to make a realdifference in the lives of victims of domestic violence.Clients living at our shelter receive a welcome breakfrom cooking while volunteer groups enjoy theexperience and positive interaction with clients.

Meal preparation and serving can be done as a one-time opportunity or on a monthly basis. Localrestaurants and businesses can also get involved bydonating or catering meals to be served to theclients at our shelter. Catering orders and homemademeals are prepared for approximately 35 people.

If your church group, club, organization or family isinterested in participating, please contact Deonne [email protected] or call 331-431-9688.

The Crisis Center for South Suburbia Auxiliary hosted its 11thannual Walk Against Domestic Violence at Lake Katherine onAugust 3rd and raised over $4,600! They also held their annualmeeting at the shelter and members enjoyed tours.

This month watch for them outside of local Jewel-Osco storelocations for their annual Tag Days.

    On a Mission

Leaving a Lasting ImpressionThe Crisis Center loses two long-time leaders to well-deserved retirement

The Crisis Center Board, staff and volunteers knew that the time would eventually come to say good-bye to Diane Veltman and Laura Parker, however it still doesn’t quite seem real. Long-time Finance Director(and four-time interim Executive Director) Diane Veltman retired on October 4th, just two months afterGrants Coordinator Laura Parker departed after 15 years of service. Combined, the pair worked at theCrisis Center for over 40 years! Their compassion, kindness and wealth of knowledge will be truly missed.

Thankfully, both Diane and Laura were able to assist in the training of their replacements. We are proud to welcomeBrian Melby as the new Director of Finance and CatherineVelasco as the new Grants Coordinator. Melby’s career spans 30+ years in financial reporting, analysis, andmanagement and his experience includes long-rangeplanning, business/financial leadership, as well as financialanalysis. Velasco has several years of experience in non-profit grant writing as well as over three decades of experience as a professional writer. Diane Veltman Laura Parker

The Emergency Services Program helps a young mother overcome a variety of roadblocks and barriers on her path to safety

The path to safety andfreedom is almostnever straight andunobstructed. Theclients that we assiston a daily basis comefrom a variety ofgeographic locations, income levels andsocioeconomicbackgrounds and ourgoal is to provide eachsurvivor with theresources that theyneed to move forward.Angie’s story is one of inspiration and ithighlights the importance of our EmergencyServices Program.

Angie came to the shelter after experiencingmany years of abuse and trauma. She was theproud mother of three children, but the man sheonce loved had become increasingly violent overthe years. She wanted to leave him, however, she had limited income and she wasn’t aware ofthe resources that were available at CrisisCenter for South Suburbia.

One day an argument escalated and concernedneighbors called police. While at the policestation, Angie discovered the Crisis Center and

reached out to our 24-hour hotline. Angie andher three children soonhad a safe place to liveand she began her longroad to recovery.

As Angie began puttingher life back together, she felt that she couldnever catch a break. She encounteredissues ranging fromchild care to carrepairs, limited familysupport and a great

difficulty locating affordable housing. Angie’scounselor, however, was able to connect her toresources for child care and EmergencyAssistance funds that helped pay for car repairsand a deposit on her own apartment. She wasalso incredibly grateful that she was able tokeep her children in the same school district.

Angie had the courage and strength to breakfree from a violent relationship and the CrisisCenter was there to provide her with theresources and tools that she needed to moveforward. After several years of hard work, Angieis living a life free from violence and she and herchildren are no longer in danger.

Choosing Between Safety and a Place to Live…the choice that no one should have to make When someone is experiencing domestic violence theymay feel pressured to stay in a dangerous relationshipbecause they fear that they, and possibly their children, will have no place to call home. Choosing between ahome and physical safety is a choice that no oneshould have to make and the Crisis Center is working to provide more housing through two major programinitiatives this year.

The first program provides Rapid Re-housing and supportive services to approximately 24 households a year who are victims of domestic violence. The program is a partnership between the Crisis Center for South Suburbia and South Suburban Family Shelter. The goals are to help people obtain housing quickly, increase self-sufficiency, and stay housed.

The second program is a partnership between Crisis Center of South Suburbia, Housing Forward, Sarah’s Inn,WINGS, and Evanston/Northshore YMCA to improve the identification, coordination, and housing placementsfor victims of domestic violence.

The Crisis Center has added two new staff members to coordinate these projects and to work with clientswho are facing the possibility of becoming homeless.

The Crisis Center’s Executive Director, Pam Kostecki, says, “Housing is a human right, and without it wewould feel scattered, lost, and most of all unsafe. As advocates, we must work to overcome the barriersvictims of domestic violence experience and provide avenues to help them obtain stable and affordablehousing. It is the only way they can take on the journey of healing from the abuse they suffered.”
