Well done to those who turned up for these wearing the blue and white club hat. I understand there has been some confusion with the hats? To confirm, for Sussex League it is the blue and white one not the silver one. The silver one is a com- memorative hat and can be worn for training or Open Meets. Many thanks to all those parents who pitch up and help at these galas, either as an Official or a helper, the club cannot run with- out the help of parents/grandparents/carers, your help and sup- port is much appreciated. This weekend is our Last Chance Open Meet. Unfortunately, so many of our regular helpers/ officials are away and I know Allen Porter, our work force co-ordinator, has had difficulty in recruiting enough people to help, if you are able to help and have not already volunteered to do so then please do come forward. Hi Everyone,

Head Coach Report

Firstly, best wishes to 6 year old Millie Iden who has broken her arm and to 13 year old Jessie Brown who has been poorly and has had an operation. We wish you both a speedy recovery.

I’ve been taking a close look at all the swimmers and can see lots of great improvement, particularly evident in the 200m freestyle time trials. Group moves are taking place very slowly as space allows and I am still working on a re-jig of the squads to allow greater movement. This is taking a while as we are exploring various options across all the venues we use.

A reminder that training continues as normal over the holidays EXCEPT: No training this Sunday 6th April due to our open meet and no training over the Easter weekend - Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.

Sussex County Championships, 15-16/03-14 Another great weekend – more superb performances! The swimmers were all well behaved and supportive to each other - a credit to the team.

Congratulations to the following swimmers who have achieved new regional qualifying times over this final weekend: Archie Strowger - 200 free; William Le Merle - 400 IM; Charlie Hodges - 100 back ; Lewis Smart - 400 IM; James Fairlie - 50 breast; Sam Munro 50 fly & 50 free; William Jagger - 50 fly; Jess Frayne - 100 fly. Several improved their regional times (we now have 11 swimmers with 38 RQTs) and again there were a couple of near misses.

Open Men’s Championship Record! Will Jagger did it again, this time winning the 200m freestyle Open Men’s Championship. In a brilliant swim in the final he was just 0.03 seconds off the championship record! So Will will receive a Championship trophy for both this and the 400m freestyle championship won last time. These are usually presented at the Sussex County AGM in June.

Gold was also won by: James Fairlie - 50 breast & 50 fly Will Le Merle - 50 breast, 50 free, 200 free, 200 fly & 400 IM

There were lots more silver and bronze winners too, along with rosettes - see photo.

An enormous thank you to everyone who helped over the final weekend - team managing and officiating: Donna, Helen, Sarah, Steve, Phil, Mark, Sally and Tina.

Other Galas swum this month:

Sussex League Gala, 08/03/14 A fantastic well done to all the swimmers! Mid-way through the counties, this gala was very close and exciting - we have never beaten Crawley as far as I can remember and this was the closest we have come. It was a difficult gala for the swimmers with the oppressive heat and not being able to easily come round and cheer, see me for feedback, or even go to the toilet, without going past the start as the teams were all based around the diving pool - they had to be very careful not to do this at the start of a race. A very poorly designed competition pool!! There were lots of PBs, some quite large. Bel Robinson and Luke Lamprell both knocked almost 4 seconds off their 50 breast! Special note to Alex Bryant who was working this night, but got permission for an hour off to come and swim the 100 open breast - thank you Alex. It was great to have Portsmouth based Will Condron back in the team too. Nic Savill swam what would have been his county time in his 100 breast in a licensed meet a month ago! Lewis Smart is the first of our current 12yr old boys to swim under 30s in his 50 free and he then did it in under 29s at the counties! We had some excellent relay performances, coming 1st in 6 relays and 2nd in all the others. The squadron was very exciting and close at the end....... and very loud!

Final points: Crawley 405; LITTLEHAMPTON 390; Worthing 213

Well done TEAM! Thank you to all our helpers - Helen, Steve, Denise H, Denise B, Sally, Sarah, Keith, Mark B and Mark S. Also to Heidi and Amber for helping with recording notes and splits.

Sussex League Gala 2, 29/03/14 This was our home gala, held at Arun LC. The atmosphere was great throughout and a superb team effort saw us finish 2nd, 87pts behind a very strong team from Atlantis, but 151pts ahead of East Grinstead. We finished 1st in 18 races and 2nd in 22 races. Many were very close, just 1/100th second between 1st & 2nd in a couple, with another hugely exciting final squadron relay in which we were just pipped at the finish by Atlantis despite a stupendous final leg of 23.58s from Will Condron.

Final points: Atlantis 444; LITTLEHAMPTON 357; East Grinstead 206

Thank you to everyone who helped, lots of you being our home gala! Our final Sussex League gala isn’t until 21/06/14, please mark the date in your diary now!

ESSA South East Regional Schools Championships, 30/03/14 Congratulations to Will Jagger, Sam Munro and Lewis Smart who all represented Sussex in the Regional Schools Championships which were held at the Surrey Sports Park 50m pool. Will won his 200m freestyle, just 1/10th second off his national time, and will go on to represent the South East in the National schools final. Sam finished 3rd and Lewis 5th in their events, with Lewis just 0.4s off his 100m breaststroke national time. Fantastic results, well done guys!

Finally, well done to all who swam in the ESSA Sussex Primary Schools Relay Championships on Wednesday. William Le Merle and Ollie Hodges were swimming for West Park School, their team won both their races and will now progress to the Regional round at the end of the month. Akos Hausknecht and Amelie Pearce swam for East Preston Junior School. The girls team won their mixed stroke relay and so Amelie will also swim in the regional round. Ryan Holter and Heidi Cameron swam for Vale school. Well done to you all. This competition was for all year 5/6 children, so if your school didn’t enter ask them why not! There’s a special category for small schools too. Information on ESSA School competitions in the South East can be found at http://www.southeastschoolswimming.org.uk

Good luck to all who are swimming in our open meet this weekend and to Will Jagger and Jess Frayne who are swimming in the National British colleges Championships in Bath on Saturday, representing the south east team! Also to club member Will Condron who is swimming for Portsmouth Northsea in 3 events at the British Championships in Glasgow next week– this is the qualifying event for the Commonwealth Games!

Happy swimming! Sue x Page 3

Adlington Academy Hi Team,

I’d like to send out a huge Adlington Get Well Soon to Millie this month! Millie is getting all of the attention now because she’s broken her arm too. That’s our 3rd one at club in 5 weeks! She was doing gymnastics!

We have missed a couple of Sundays because Sue, Steve and I have been at the County Championships with the older chil-dren. Only our best swimmers get to go there and most of the lane next to you on a Friday competed. If you get a minute after you’ve finished swimming then watch them for a little while. You can learn a lot from good swimmers, they are always streamlined (pointy) when they push off of a wall, work really hard and have beautiful technique. I can remember coaching most of them when they were in Adlington and could only manage 2 lengths! So make sure you keep trying, keep practising and never give up!

If you’re going swimming with family or friends over the Easter holidays remember to try and do some of the things that you are stuck at or find hard; forward rolls and diving are the main ones and good fun to learn too. (Marissa learnt how to do a forward roll in the water last month and I was so impressed she got swimmer of the month)

If any of you are Beavers, Cubs, Rainbows or Brownies then you can always ask me to check you for your badge work and we can get some signed off. Just bring in the paperwork and we’ll see what we can do.

I hope you all have a wonderful Easter and get lots of eggs!!

Keep trying your best all of the time.

Helen xx

Squad Coach Chat

Page 4

Jackson Squad

Welcome,

Whilst a large number of swimmers in the Club have been busy with the Sussex County Championships; in Jackson Squad we have been focusing on our training. What I think is important to remember is that the majority of the 40 or so Littlehampton swimmers who reached the county qualifying standard this year have come through our own squad system. A number of our swimmers have achieved the Regional qualifying standard and a very select number will reach the National Championships standard. Never forget that the swimmers from Littlehampton Swim Club who reach these levels have invariable been In Jack-son Squad or its equivalent. You are in a lucky position, being a member of Littlehampton SC gives you opportunity to reach your swimming goals.

The one thing that the swimmers who reach the highest standards need, is real dedication to training. That means attending as many sessions as possible, listening to their coaches and always trying to swim with best technique. I am keen that you under-stand the effect of good technique and STREAMLINING can have on your performance. After the Easter Holidays, we are going to spend 10 minutes at 8pm each Friday, watching the most senior performance swimmers do their warm up. (If you are in a rush, I am sure you can make the time up by getting dressed faster!). These swimmers demonstrate the techniques we are trying to improve.

Whilst there has been no galas for Jackson Squad this month, we did do a 200m freestyle time trial. There were quite a few personal best swims. Making significant improvement were Connie, Bethany, Nichola and Chloe E, but special mention goes to Hannah H, who knocked over a minute off her previous best time and joined our sub 4 minute club. It was a shame that for some of you, your performance and times were affected by leaky goggles. If your goggles leak, it means that they are not fitted properly. All goggles which meet the British Swimming standard must have instructions with them. Please read those instruc-tions and with an adult fit them correctly before you arrive for training. Don’t be embarrassed about trying them out at home in the shower or bath!

Good luck to the Jackson 5 (Pia, Freya, Tierney, Alfie & Finlay) who are competing in our own open meet on the 6th April 2014. Unfortunately for once I’ll not be there, but following intently on meet mobile.

Finally two reminders: please arrive for training at least 10 minutes before the time you are due in the water, to do your pre-water mobility. There are always senior swimmers there to help. It is frustrating to the swimmers who are there on time, that an increasing number of swimmers are arriving even after the warm up has started. I mentioned it last month, but I will men-tion it again! I consider our own STAG Gala on the 5th July 2014 something which all members of Jackson Squad should enter for development.

Tatty – Bye,

Steve

Foster Squad

Hi Team, What a busy time we’ve had this month, 2 weekends of Counties and 2 Sussex League Galas Counties first; I was very proud of you all. Everyone behaved well, was a credit to our club and achieved some amazing things. Well done to everyone who took part – Ellie, Jamie, Anna D, Ollie H, Will, Abby, Matty, Archie and Sophie. Anyone who finishes in the top 8 is a finalist and receives a rosette, the top 3 are awarded medals. I love watching the finals, the children are called individually up to the start over the loudspeaker, get a chance to wave and are cheered really loudly. It’s a very proud moment for parents and coaches! Winners - Gold Medallists: Will Le Merle - 400 free, 200 back, 50 breast, 50 free, 200 free, 200 fly & 400 IM Archie Strowger - 200 breast (probably the biggest surprise of the champs judging by Donna’s squeal!) Silver medallists: Archie 1, Will 3 Bronze medallists: Archie 2 Rosettes: Ollie H 2, Will 2, Abby 2, Archie Starchie 8 To work out who is the best overall swimmer for each age group a selection of different strokes and distances are used. The times are converted to points and added together. These are called Bagcats. Our 10 year old boys were on fire with Will Winning the Bagdogs and Archie coming 4th – Amazing! Will wins a special trophy for this and will bring it in to show us all when his name has been engraved on it. The Regional Champs are the next stage up and again you have to qualify to swim at them. Regional times were achieved by Archie - 200 breast & 400 free, 200 free (to be added to his 2 others in 200 Back & 200IM) Will - 400 IM Abby just missed hers by 0.02secs and Ollie was 0.04secs off of a 200m race, it’s just longer fingernails needed there! They’ve got another couple of chances each I think so train hard and go for it guys! (To show you how high the standards are in Sussex, Abby was 8th in her race so you’ve pretty much got to be regional standard to come in the top 8! (As Will & Archie did – Big Time!) Remember to keep working hard, not stopping in the lane and always being streamlined and hopefully next year we’ll have even more County Qualifiers. Our lane helpers Tom and Ryan swam brilliantly too. Ryan won a Rosette and Tom won 2, in one final they were against each other which was very exciting. Tom is also within a second of 2 Regional times. We only have the best helpers on Foster!! The Sussex League is always good fun with lots of cheering and teamwork. We were against some very hard teams this year so everyone had to swim at their best. Congratulations to Hannah, Bel, Archie, Jamie, Ellie, Will, Sophie, Ollie, Amelie and Abby who were chosen to represent our club and well done to you all. There were lots of PBs, some quite large. Bel knocked almost 4 seconds off her 50 breast. I hope I’ve remembered everything & counted properly, please forgive me if not, I have a vomiting 4 year old helping!! Good luck to everyone swimming at galas next month, particularly our Last Chance Open meet, it’s fab to have some new faces swimming there. Great work team!!! My email address is [email protected] if you have any questions. Keep up the good work. Helen x

Thorpe Squad Hi Guys, Last month was a gala month and a half!! With two weekends of Counties and two Sussex League weekends, you have been kept really busy. The first weekend was the Counties part 2. A number of you were there, including the boys for the relays. There were some fantastic results and pbs from you all. Swimmers there this week were: Charlie Bl; Charlie Bo; Jessie; Charlie H; Anna; Will; Lewis and Tyler. Achievements to note were Lewis swimming a 13.95s pb in his 1500m freestyle and Charlie H knocking nearly 9 seconds off his 200m breast and swimming a 9s pb in his 200m backstroke. Also, Anna, Charlie H and Lewis all swam Re-gional Qualifying Times and Charlie H won gold in his 50m backstroke. Fantastic! The next weekend was round 1 of the Sussex League, in Worthing. This was very exciting and we certainly gave Crawley a run for their money! Swimmers were: Jessie; Luke; Anna; Lewis; Tyler and Isaac. Everybody swam some pbs, Lewis won an event and we had lots of 2nd places. Our Under 14 girls Tyler, Jessie, Anna and Charlie Bo won both the freestyle and medley relays, go girls!! Unfortunately Charlie H couldn't swim as he had a shoulder injury. Glad to see that it's getting better and you're back on form Charlie.

Hi to our iSwimmers,

One of our iSwimmers qualified for the County Championships which were held this month. Congratulations to Matty (Saturdays-Lancing College) who came 12th in the 200m Breaststroke (8 lengths). That means that he is the 12th fastest 10 year old in East & West Sussex. ( Not bad considering he was still 9 when he swam because his birthday was the day before the cut-off date!)

Jess who works in the water for us on Saturdays & Tuesdays did brilliantly. She came 2nd in the 50m freestyle, 4th in 50m Butterfly and 3rd in 100m Butterfly out of the whole of Sussex in the over 16 category. Well done Jess!

This month Will Condron is going to the Commonwealth Games Trials. Will’s youngest brother Edward now swims with us on Mondays and Will began his swimming journey with us many years ago. Fantastic Will!

Rob has joined us as a life guard on Saturdays. He is the son of our chairlady, Denise who’s on the front page of this newsletter.

I will list all of the badges next month when they have been finalised and given out.

I’m trying to list any very special new achievements. Please let me know if I’ve missed anything off and I will put it in next month!

First strokes alone – Flynn Ellis, Olivia Davis

First width at Lancing College (10m) – Keeley and Morgan Lansdowne, both backstroke

First length at Lancing College (25m) – Charlie Oliver, front and back! Kiera Hobbs, backstroke. Sammy Smith, backstroke

First width at Oak Grove (5m) – Abigail Harrison, front and back! Alex Howell, front crawl.

First Disappearing under water – Paul Burke, Jed Warner

Well done to you all for doing so well, I’m very pleased.

Happy Swimming!

Thorpe Squad, continued

Next came the Counties part 3. Here we saw Charlie Bo; Charlie H; Tom; Anna; Will; Lewis and Tyler. There were some huge pbs this weekend; Tom swam a 5s pb to come 6th; Anna swum two 6s+ pbs and two 7s+ pbs; Will swum a 13.51 pb and Lewis a 12.46 pb in their 400IM. Lewis and Charlie H swam new RQTs and finished 2nd and joint 4th in the 12yrs BAGcats respectively. Just to finish a great weekend, Charlie H broke 2 club records and Lewis broke 9!! Lastly, we had round 2 of the Sussex League at ALC. Another fantastic gala where again, we were a lot closer to Atlantis! We had a couple of first places and lots of seconds to help our points total and the team spirit was amazing as always. You should be very proud! Bring on round 3! Sadly, Jessie couldn't compete in the last County weekend or Sussex League as she was poorly. We've missed you at galas and training Jessie so take care and get well soon!! Just a quick note to help in training. Please make sure you practice those streamlined turns to make them fast and tidy. This will help keep your speed up in a race to ensure that you remain in front when you come out of a turn, particularly when you went into the turn in front. On that note, good, fast turns will ensure you swim well at our Last Chance gala, the Crawley gala or the Portsmouth Easter Meet. Good Luck if you are swimming at any of these. On to non swimming things (yes, there are some!) I would like to wish Kirstee Porter well for her mental jump out of a perfectly good aeroplane, which she has hopefully now done. You are raising money for a great cause, so well done! Thorpe Park is coming round fast, so if you're going have a really good time and make sure you enjoy your Easter holidays! If you need to get in touch with me for any reason at all, including to let me know what you have achieved, you can contact me at [email protected] (all ok now!). Sarah xx
