1 Newsletter No. 5 - Term 1Week 6 Thursday 5 th March 2015 From the Principal…………. CANBERRA CAMP NO. 2 I am sure you have been following the adventures of our second group of Canberra campers on Facebook. The campers are due back tomorrow afternoon at approx. 5pm. Our wonderful Gill in the office will send a SMS message to all parents of the campers when the bus reaches Yea. Unfortunately I will not be there to greet the campers this week but I’m sure they’ve had a great time and will be very, very tired and that includes the staff and parents on camp! INDIA TRIP Yesterday I held an information afternoon about the trip to India. Quite a number of parents were at the afternoon and it looks as though we will have a very positive response to the trip. If any parents of Grade 5 & 6 children missed the afternoon and would like some information, please contact us at the office. The trip will be going ahead in late August/early September. BADGE PRESENTATIONS The Badges are in; the Campers are back, which means it’s Badge Presentation time. At our next assembly on Monday, 16 th March the Student Leadership Team, House Captains and House Vice- Captains, Junior School Council and Branch Out Ambassadors will be presented with their badges. All families are welcome to attend the assembly, and there will be a morning tea afterwards at the Kalinda Kafe in the Stadium Foyer. WHAT IS THAT IN OUR FOYER??? If you’ve been up to the school this week you may have noticed something different in our foyer. There is an installation called, “A Memorial to Oil”. This installation was constructed at the Maroondah Festival late last year. It emphasises that oil has been a wonderful source of fuel for humankind, however, we will be running out of oil, and what happens then? The idea is that if we plan sufficiently in advance, with imagination and creativity, a future with less oil could be preferable to the present. The installation is visiting primary schools in the area for a month each, and it is there to create conversation and debate about our energy use and our view of the future. Come and have a look and we all may start thinking in different ways to improve the future for our children. LAURYN’S FUNDRAISING FOR BRAIN CANCER RESEARCH One of our students, Lauryn Harris, and her Dad, are shaving their heads to raise money and awareness for research into brain cancer. Below is a link to Lauryn’ s fundraising page. Congratulations, Lauryn for your dedication to this cause. Lauryn and her Dad, Andrew, plan to 'perform the shaving ceremony' on Sunday 29th March at about midday in the grounds of Croydon Hills Baptist Church where Andrew is the Pastor. Representatives from the school and her classmates would be more than welcome to support and attend this event. http://www.curebraincancer.org.au/my-fundraising/8387/shave-for-stef#.VOlorFQHuJB.gmail GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER)

Students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. RAY BROOKMAN CANBERRA CAMP COORDINATOR

Name Changes for Levels at Kalinda You may have noticed that we have stopped referring to ‘Levels’ at Kalinda this year. In the past, Level 1 referred to Prep, Level 2 to Grades 1 and 2, Level 3 to Grades 3 and 4 and Level 4 to Grades 5 and 6. This terminology was based on how the Victorian Curriculum was written. In changing to the National Curriculum, the terminology for different grades has changed, and we need to change with it. The first and most obvious change is that the long held Victorian tradition of naming the first year of school ‘Prep’ has been changed, with our new students now entering ‘Foundation’. This is a nationally agreed upon term, designed to bring consistency in regards to the first year of schooling to every state and territory in Australia. The title itself is perhaps not as well liked for some, but consistency in starting age and curriculum across Australia for our youngest students is a very welcome change. Further up the school, the term ‘Level’ has changed in meaning in our new curriculum documents. Levels now refer to year-long stages of learning progress for our students. For example, students in Grade 1 could typically be expected to be at a Level 1 standard in their learning. Grade 2 students will often be at Level 2, and so on. However, Levels are not the same as Grades, because a Grade 2 child may be doing very well in a particular area and be working at a Level 3 standard. Or they may be a little slower in their learning development and still working to master the Level 1 standards. This is why we no longer use the term ‘Level’ for our Grade groupings. As a school we have decided to go back to the term ‘Grade’ to describe our class groupings, as it is the most easily understood term for parents and the wider community. Therefore our school is now separated into Foundation, Grade 1/2, Grade 3/4 and Grade 5/6. RICHARD LAMBERT ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

KALINDA’S EASTER RAFFLE

Hippity Hoppity, Hippity Hoppity It’s time for Kalinda’s annual Easter Raffle fundraiser. For new families at Kalinda, each year we hold our famous Easter Raffle. Last year we had over 180 prizes!! This fundraiser is only possible with the participation of families sending along donations of Easter-type goodies that can be used to make up hampers/prizes for the raffle. Be creative – what would you like to win in an Easter Hamper? Just make sure the use-by dates are still current, e.g. eggs, chocolate, biscuits, books, toys, coffee, tea – let your imagination hop wild!

NUT-FREE ONLY PLEASE Easter Raffle notices and tickets were sent home last week – one book per family. If you did not receive your book of tickets, please let the office know and we will arrange for one to go home. Each booklet contains 15 tickets at $1.00 per ticket – with so many prizes the odds of winning a prize is very hippity, hoppity high! FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

ROYAL CHILDRENS HOSPITAL GOOD FRIDAY APPEAL

Give that they may grow

Each year the Good Friday Appeal brings together people from all parts of the community to raise much needed funds for equipment, research and education to support the work of The Royal Children's Hospital.

The strength of the Good Friday Appeal lies with the thousands of people who volunteer their time, expertise and creativity to organise fundraising activities throughout the year. Together they have raised more than $274 million for the benefit of the hospital since the Good Friday Appeal began in 1931.

The activities of the Good Friday Appeal lead up to an all-day telethon, broadcast live across Victoria on Good Friday and supported by the Herald Sun, Channel 7 and 3AW 693.

The Good Friday Appeal is a non-denominational, non-political organisation that exists solely to raise funds for the benefit of The Royal Children's Hospital.

To find out more about The Royal Children's Hospital please visit www.rch.org.au

Donation envelopes were sent home yesterday. If you wish to donate to this very worthy cause, please place your donation in the envelope and return to the office by Friday 20th March. A receipt will be sent home to you early next term for tax purposes.

Library News! The Library is currently processing many new books which, hopefully, the children will enjoy immensely. The Series Novels have also been separated from the A-Z Novels so hopefully more books will be borrowed! The neater and more organised the library is, the easier it will be for students to find what they are looking for. Which brings me to a question! Would there possibly be any volunteers who could assist with a task weekday morning please? The task would be:

collecting the books to be returned from the classrooms that have Library that day (usually only one or two classes),

scanning the returned books back into the computer system, and;

re-shelving them?

I would imagine this task would take between 15 and 30 minutes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please email me at [email protected] if you are able to assist.

Regards, Wendy Robertson

WORKING BEE Many thanks to the following families for their assistance during last weekend’s working bee – the first for 2015: Bruno, Chheang, Goodwin, Gregson, He, Norman, Snelleksz-Vermont, Smith, White, Zupanovich, Knox, McLean and Cileceken, along with their mini-helpers; Aiden, Ella, Peliza, Tyrone, Shaylee, Ruby & Blake, Colin, Sebastian, Alexis & Conor, Ryan and Declan (…terrific numbers on what turned out to be a glorious morning [after ‘that’ crazy, stormy night!]). We managed to stay on top of a few ongoing projects as well as to complete a few stand-alone jobs. 'Boxes ticked' included: * soft-fall was re-spread to priority areas (in all playgrounds) and reclaimed from surrounding areas, * sand-pits were rejuvenated, * all of the in-ground drains around the grounds were checked and cleared as necessary, * we had a few pieces of ‘unauthorised hard rubbish that were cleared, * cobwebs were removed from around the stadium, portables and store rooms, * the staff car park received a general ‘clean-and-tidy’, * the trees/plants around our paved chess board received some TLC, * the small raised garden bed outside the portable of 34M was cleaned up and tidied following the gradual demise of a mosaic project from many years ago – in preparation for a new installation (watch this space), * The garden beds at front of school were mulched, and * a rotted, old bench seat near the synthetic basketball courts was removed. We would like to extend a huge thank you to every family who participates at our working bees, as we simply could not keep our huge grounds looking as pleasant as they are without you. And, as always, we would also like to say a massive thank you to Bryan Bennett and Ted (and Nathan) Dugdale who - along with Steve Harvey and Michael Raftopoulos (and Katie) - organise the jobs that need doing and (most importantly) make sure the BBQ is ready for hungry workers! If you are new to the school or have not yet filled out the working bee slip to indicate your date of preference, please do so through the office. Many hands make light work and it’s always a great opportunity to meet other parents and for your children to get together. THE NEXT WORKING BEE IS SCHEDULED FOR SUNDAY MARCH 29 from 10am - 12noon (but is subject to change). We will let you know as soon as plans have been finalised. Barring any changes; see you there! Hills P.S. Full venue details and team locations are available weekly on the school website, located at www.kalinda.vic.edu.au

the centre previously known as 'Kalinda Auskick' will operate

1. The Norwood Auskick (Mullum Reserve) sessions will start at 5:30pm on Friday March 20 (75 minutes / 13 sessions).

2. The Norwood Auskick (Kalinda P.S.) sessions will start at 9:30am on Sunday March 22 (60 minutes / 10 sessions).

details about Norwood’s Auskick ‘credentials’ can be found at:

INTER SCHOOL GYMNASTICS (ISG) DETAILS ANNOUNCED: Last week’s entry in this space

created a fair bit of interest within the Kalinda community. Whilst the ISG event is mainly for primary

school-aged students who already ‘do’ club gymnastics, many of the inquiries I received were about

how to get started at a club. For that reason, please find the link to Gymnastics Victoria’s: Club

Search page (http://vic.gymnastics.org.au/page.php?id=99 ) on which you can nominate a (within) distance from your chosen

postcode. I would note however, that at least one gymnastics based program that I know ‘of’ (but not much ‘about’) – at

Aquahub (previously: Croydon Leisure Centre) is NOT listed, but could be worth the inquiry..?
