Dearly beloved in Christ,

“For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwell in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well” ( 2 Timothy 1:5)

Lois, the grandmother, and Eunice, the mother of Timothy are two women whose names are mentioned in the Bible only once. They were very ordinary women. But their names are remembered even now. Their sincere faith, love of the Holy Scriptures and influence in Timothy’s spiritual life created a great impression on Apostle Paul. Timothy was walking in a fine heritage of faith and discipline which he received from his home. These two women helped Timo-thy to love the scripture. They were convinced of the power of God’s word and the influence of it on human life.

Paul reminds him of his family tradition. The origin of Paul’s friendship to Timothy is seen in Acts 16: 1-2 “Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek. He was well spoken of by the brothers at Lystra and Iconium.” Timothy became Paul’s favorite co-worker and compan-ion. Paul instructs him “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”(2 Timothy 3; 14-17) These are all indications to us that these godly women had trained him up in the way he should go. The influence of mothers and grandmothers in the life of a child is very well seen in Timothy’s life. A fine parentage is one of the greatest gifts a person can have and should be thankful for it.

The link of faith from Lois to Eunice, to Timothy, did not stop there. Through Timothy, many other people would come to the same faith and would be stimulated to preach the Gospel. Eunice and Lois did not know the great plans God had for Timothy. God in-

tends for mothers and grandmothers to teach their children and grandchildren God’s word that would bring them to faith. This vision of our mothers led to the formation of Sevikasangham. Let us remember their self-sacrificing efforts in passing the torch of faith to generations. Let us surrender ourselves to follow their footsteps.

May God bless us all,

With love and prayers,

Dearly beloved in Christ,

September is a special month for many of us. Every first Monday of the month, we celebrate Labor Day. Labor Day is a time in where we recognize the work force in America and their contribu-tion for our country. As God’s creation placed on this world to do work, we should know our responsibility to dedicate all that we are for God in the abilities God has blessed us with. We are all bles-sed equally but uniquely. God made us all unique in fulfilling His divine purpose for us. It comes to us to understand what makes us unique and how we can submit our unique selves for the glory of God. Proverbs 16:3 says “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” As we exist in this world, how much are we willing to give our best for God in our existence on earth? God gave His all for us. We should also give all that we have for God. It does not mean to be perfect, but to be the best ‘me’ that I can be. Let us remember the hard work of all Ameri-cans throughout history till date. Our country is blessed by the contribution of hard work. Let us use this Labor Day to thank God for His wonderful providence and move forward and continue to strive.

The first Sunday of September our lectionary is commemorating as Education Sunday. The theme is focused on teachers and that they should be filled with divine wisdom. James 3 speaks on wis-dom from above and below. All can get wisdom. But the wisdom that we get from above, filled with selflessness, love and compas-sion brings forth harmony for humanity. As we teach the growing generation we should seek God for wisdom, to bring up humanity, and not just to acquire knowledge that only brings up the self and tries to put ‘I’ on the pedestal. Let us pray for our teachers to teach to sharpen one another, hoping for the next generation to strive to be the best they can be for God.

Happy September to one and all. God bless.

Much love,

Jess Achen

SECRETARY’S CORNER

Begin the day with Hope - Psalm 3

I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the LORD sustains me. I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me on every side. (Psalm 3:5-6)

Do you ever awaken in the morning to discover feelings of dark clouds in your mind? If so, you know that dark thoughts can overwhelm us very quickly.

If anyone had reason to feel like that, it was David when he wrote Paslm 3. He and a small group of followers had been driven from the palace of Jerusalem because of a rebellion by his son Absalom. They spent the first two nights at the shore of Jordan river with the problem still unresolved. Even so, David was able to lie down and go to sleep. When he woke up in the morning the thought of the dark cloud came into his minds but he didn’t think it too long. Instead he look upward God, backwards in gratitude for His mercies, and forward in expectation of His mighty deliverence. David could enter the day with new hope.

Some mornings we do wake up to a very difficult day. When this happens, we can either go into despair or follow the example of King David.

Faith, gratitude and expectation will enable us to face the most difficult day with strong confidence in God.
