MAY / JUNE 2018 F r o m t h e V i c a r : Dear Parishioners: In the midst of one of the fall/winter storms, a huge oak fell on my property knocking down other big trees as it tumbled to the ground. I had a mess. My sons and I cleaned up as much as we could conquer and then we made a joint decision that we would tackle the remainder when the wood dried, convincing ourselves that removing the trees would be an easy task. The days went into weeks and then months; the dead trees became part of the landscape of our lower property until I couldn’t stand looking at the mess anymore and called in a professional. In a day, he was able to produce stunning results; the trees were removed and our back yard was once again usable. All I had to do was to face the truths that the trees would not rot fast enough to suit me (and probably my neighbors) and that the job was too big for me to handle alone. I needed help. I notice when I re-read the resurrection appearances that Jesus visited his disciples when they were in groups. Following theses astonishing appearances, they had to depend upon one another to sort out what they had just experienced and to decide what to do next. How exactly do they spread the word that Jesus was more than a prophet, that he was Lord and God? Do they scatter and go out alone, or in groups, or remain together as whole? Together, they had to make decisions that affect- ed the whole. Just as they were responsible to Jesus, they were also responsible to one another. Je- sus expected them to help one another discern what the Holy Spirit was calling them to be and to do. We worship a Triune God; a God who is constantly in community with himself and the world. My point is this: Christianity is all about working together: working with the Holy Spirit and working with our fellow Christians to spread the Good News that Jesus is resurrected and active in our lives. God has not and will never abandon us. Perhaps we, the congregation of the Church of the Ridge, are in a unique position to understand this. We are comprised of three different churches with their unique and wonderful histories, but we are one as a congregation. Together we witness to the power and grace of Christ; separately we would struggle to survive. We need one another’s help. I pray that during this Easter Season and throughout Ordinary Time (the time following Pentecost Day), that we will be open to see how our Triune God is at work in our lives and how he calls us forth to work with the larger Christian Community so we can witness to the glory of Christ’s resur- rection. Faithfully, D a v i d T h o m p s o n

From the Vicar : Dear Parishioners: In the midst of one of the fall/winter storms, a huge oak fell on my property knocking down other big trees as it tumbled to the ground. I had a mess. My sons and I cleaned up as much as we could conquer and then we made a joint decision that we would tackle the remainder when the wood dried, convincing ourselves that removing the trees would be an easy task. Church Outreach DSS We would like to invite our parishioners to participate in a new outreach ministry, to help the Dept. of Social Services by providing 'startup kits' for the children entering the foster care program. These are children re-moved from their homes by DSS due to abuse or neglect. DSS tries first to place the children with relatives, so they can remain in the family circle. During which time the parents are going through services to help them become able to parent their children safely. If DSS cannot find an appropriate relative placement, they must place the children in foster homes. (Children over age 14 may be placed in group homes if no foster home is available.) These children often come from their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs or a few possessions (often in a trash bag). The children are taken directly to the approved foster home with little notice. Although the foster families receive an initial stipend to clothe the child and provide necessities, the child often arrives after hours. DSS has a mission to provide these children with a suitcase or duffle bag with necessities so they can arrive in their new placement with some sense of dignity. DSS has asked the community to help in providing these needed items: toiletry bags (toothpaste, brush, comb, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner etc), school supplies (including back-packs), duffel bags, single sheet sets, small coloring books and crayons, word search, crossword and Sudoko puzzle books. For a complete Wish List, please contact Mary Lou (803-334-1219) or a member of the Mis-sion Council. There is a great need for certified foster homes in our area, Region 5. If you or anyone you know would like more information on becoming a certified foster parent, brochures are available at our church. We propose that parishioners bring items on the wish list to church the FOURTH Sunday of each month as an ongoing outreach project. Leisa Long will take donated items to Edgefield DSS and Sarah Schwarz will take items to Saluda DSS.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR LOCAL FESTIVALS As part of our community outreach, we have decided to participate in three local festivals this year; the Peach Blossom Festival in John-ston, the Ridge Peach Festival in Trenton and the Harvest Festival in Ridge Spring. In our tent we will sell bottled water and Watsonia ice cream in Johnston and bottled water and casseroles in Trenton and Ridge Spring. Proceeds from the festivals will go to the respective food bank that we support in that community. The first festival is in Johnston on May 5th. We are asking that you sign up for a two-hour shift during the day to help us familiarize the community with our wonderful church and to provide assistance to those less fortunate. The festival is open from 9 – 5. We are looking for volunteers from 8-5:30 to allow for setup and tear-down. See Jay Summer to sign up. You can also reach Jay at 803-991-3157 or [email protected]. The Trenton festival will be held on June 16th and is open from 9-4. We are looking for volunteers for this festival from 8-4:30. Again, contact Jay Summer if you can help with this event. As we look to increase our outreach efforts in the community, we welcome your ideas and suggestions for opportunities for church partici-pation. To help with community awareness at events, the Mission Council has provided a 3’ x 8’ banner (as pictured) to be kept at each location, allowing easy access to church identification for any Mission Council-approved event. If you have an event where you would like to use the banner, contact Jay Summer.
