As lifelong Tiger Fans and graduates of Auburn University in 2001, my wife, Mandy, and I have a special connection to this area as many others do. After living in Birmingham, AL for 10 years, we made the decision to move to Auburn so we could be closer to family and raise our children in this incredible community. I was very fortunate to purchase an Allstate Insurance Agency in 2011 and immediately became involved in the community. My involvement in the business community and the many family-oriented events that take place in the Auburn-Opelika area made me realize the need to create a community-focused newsletter to help spread the word about what’s happening in the area. This newsletter is our way of giving back and is meant to bring its readers a consolidation of what’s happening “from the tracks to the plains”.

In 2016 we formally launched ‘Community & Cause’ which is a community-partnership program involving local business owners, our chambers of commerce, nonprofit organizations and our city municipalities. Through this initiative and the support of our partners, we are able to create awareness for local happenings as well as local nonprofit organizations and their causes.

Our Mission…“To create strategic partnerships that promote impactful community engagement.”

One of the most gratifying aspects during my years as mayor has been the annual Mayor’s Memorial Day breakfast, which we have held for the past 18 years. Hundreds of Auburn citizens attend each year to express their thanks for the service men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country.

I believe from this annual breakfast and the other initiatives of the Veterans Committee, we in Auburn have a much greater appreciation for the men and women of our armed forces than we did 18 years ago. Our beautiful Veterans Monument flies the flags of the branches of our military and honors those who have served. Our schools and Auburn University have meaningful programs that recognize the sacrifices of veterans, especially those who paid for our freedom with their lives.

At this year’s celebration, we honored Medal of Honor recipient, Command Sergeant Bennie Adkins, as our Veteran of the Year and the late Platt Boyd as our Auburn Heroes Remembered. We

July is going to be an action packed month in Opelika this year!

The City of Opelika’s Annual Freedom Cel-ebration will be held on Friday, July 1st this year, instead of the 3rd, our usual night for fireworks. We’ve set this as the date for fire-works because it marks the beginning of a

were pleased to recognize CSM Adkins’ and Colonel Boyd’s contributions to our military history and to our freedom. Their service exemplifies the very best that men and women from the Auburn and Lee County area have contributed to the defense of our peace, our liberty, and our way of life throughout our nation’s history.

three day weekend (with July 4th being on a Monday) and many folks will be out of town taking advantage of an extended weekend to travel to area lakes and the beach.

On July 13-17 the City of Opelika will, once again, welcome an outstanding event to our community: the 2016 Barbasol Champion-ship PGA Golf Tournament! It promises to be an exciting week of golf with some of the PGA’s top professional players!

During the tournament, we encourage folks to check out the many amenities the City of Opelika has to offer. Historic Downtown Opelika, named as one of Alabama’s top 10 historic downtown areas, has amazing food, many intricate and unique shops, historical sites, the new John Emerald Distillery & Red Clay Brewery, and lots of good old fashioned Southern hospitality set in picturesque sur-roundings! And Opelika’s TigerTown is a great place to go for a wide variety of shop-ping, food and relaxation, including our Ti-ger13 Movie theatre!

We hope you’ll join us often this July and enjoy all of the festivities being offered here in July. Opelika is filled with gracious people who make this community a warm and car-ing place that personifies Southern Charm!

2016-2017 Auburn Welcome magazines have arrived! Each year, the Auburn Chamber publishes a relocation and community information publication packed with all the insider information a newcomer might need in one place, accompanied by beautiful photographs of the Auburn area and Auburn University. The magazine includes updated information about utilities, education, parks and recreation programs, Auburn University, housing, doctors, banks, shopping, dining and much more.

We’re especially proud of this project because, while it’s a publication of the Auburn Chamber, it requires many hands and a great deal of input from all of our community partners and the support of many advertisers. In fact, several years ago, Auburn

University decided to forgo the creation of their own newcomer publication and partner with the Auburn Chamber to make Welcome the official relocation and community publication of Auburn University, establishing them as our largest distribution partner. We’re proud of this partnership and the town/gown relationship we enjoy.

Thanks to our many advertisers, Welcome is free to the community. Have new neighbors? Or friends and family relocating to the Auburn area? Please stop by the Auburn Chamber for a copy of Welcome! If you’re a business who might be interested in being a distribution partner, please contact Jennifer Fincher at [email protected] or (334) 887-7011.

Even though the modern game of golf is generally considered to be a Scottish invention and dating back to the 1400’s, golfing took off in the United States in the mid 1700’s and hasn’t looked back!

Today, there are over 576,534 golf courses in the world with 15,372 of them in the USA. America by far has the most golf courses of any country and is known to have some of the best courses on the globe –even one in Opelika, Alabama! According to Golf World, the best public golf courses in the country are along Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail (RTJ). RTJ at Grand National in Opelika is one of the 11 golf courses on the trail and was ranked #1 as the reader’s favorite by Golf World. Both the Links Course and the Lake Course were in the top 10 of Golf Digest’s list of America’s Top 50 Affordable Courses and 3 courses at Grand National are listed among the nation’s 10 Super Value Courses.

So, it’s easy to see why the PGA Tour chose RTJ at Grand National as the site for the Barbasol Championship in 2015 and why it’s returning July 11 – 17, 2016.

Don’t just watch – be involved in this phenomenal event! Many volunteers are needed for these tournaments. They need to fill over 20 different committees. If you helped last year, then you know how much fun it was just to be a part of history! The Barbasol Championship has a purse of $3,500,00! Last year’s winner, Scott Piercy, won $630,000.

For a full list of available committees and to register to volunteer, please visit www.barbasolchampionship.com or call 205.907.1691 to speak with Selina Maddox, Volunteer Coordinator for The Barbasol Championship, directly.

The Food Project is a revolutionary new way to collect food: It’s a donor drive, not a food drive.

Instead of asking for one-time contributions of food, our volunteers (Neighborhood Coordinators) enlist their neighbors to become long-term Food Donors.

What we do.

Neighbors give a bag of food every two months. It’s incredibly easy because the Food Bank supplies the bag and coordinators pick up the food! This provides the Food Bank with a steady, year-round supply of food and provides donors with the ongoing satisfaction of making a real difference. People also get to know their neighbors, which builds a powerful sense of community. Everyone wins!

What’s the result?

This system really works! In Southern Oregon’s Jackson County, where the program originated, they currently bring in about 300,000 lbs of food a year…one bag at a time! We now have the Food Project right here in our community. The Neighborhood Food Project is a grassroots group. That means it depends entirely on community support. Whether a person donates food, collects it, or helps out in some other way, they are what makes this program work. The Neighborhood Food Project needs your support!

Who gets the food? The Food Bank of East Alabama provides food to low-income residents in seven East Central Alabama counties through distribution sites and partner agencies like churches, soup kitchens, food pantries and shelters. Support of the Neighborhood Food Project will help us keep up with the high demand for food.

How can YOU help?Become a neighborhood coordinator or a food donor. For more information or to sign-up, contact Michelle Held at 821-9006 or [email protected]. You can also visit our website to learn more about the Food Project http://www.foodbankofeastalabama.com/.

Summer is a beautiful time of year to enjoy observing butterflies. These fascinating insects captivate onlookers as they flutter from flower to flower, drinking nectar and pollinating as they go. Fortunately for area residents, the Kreher Preserve and Nature Center has a lovely butterfly garden and wildflower trail. Both the garden and the trail are great for attracting butterflies.

Make time in your busy schedule to join the KNPC staff for the Science on Saturday Beautiful Butterflies program on July 23. Visitors can enjoy a presentation from Sara Bright and Paulette Haywood Ogard, authors of Butterflies of Alabama, then hike to the butterfly gardens to observe the many species of butterflies present at the Preserve.

The program begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 23 in the pavilion. Admission to Beautiful Butterflies is $4 per person for members of the Preserve, $5 for non-members, and children under 3 years of age are free. There is no pre-registration for this event, so don’t worry about not having a spot open. The presentation will approximately last one hour and visitors can then hike to the butterfly gardens or drive and park at the North parking lot which is a short walk to the butterfly garden. There will also be fun activities for children to engage in learning more about butterflies.

KPNC is located at 2222 North College Street near the AU Fisheries and Highway 280. For more information, visit our website at www.auburn.edu/preserve or check our our Facebook site at www.facebook.com/auburnpreserve. Who doesn’t love going to the movies? Sitting in the comfy chairs, sipping on some soda, and munching on buttery popcorn all while watching your favorite flick on a giant screen. What could be better?

What if we told you that you can enjoy a great movie while also helping the Lee County Humane Society? That’s right, we just made it better!

LCHS has been given the opportunity to show a screening of the film Rescue Dogs on Thursday, July 21, at Carmike Tiger 13 in Tiger Town starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are only $11 and a portion of this will go to LCHS.But there’s a catch.

We can’t show the film unless we have 73 tickets reserved by Thursday, July 14. By reserving your tickets, your credit or debit card won’t be charged until all 73 ticket reservations have been made. You can also make an additional contribution to LCHS when reserving your ticket. So what is Rescue Dogs? Rescue Dogs is a talking-dog, family comedy about

rescue animals, starring REAL rescue animals! That’s right, a film about rescue dogs for rescue dogs!

You can watch the movie trailer and reserve your tickets by visiting leecountyhumane.org or by going to facebook.com/leecountyhumanesociety and going to our event page.

All proceeds from this event will benefit the LCHS adoption fund. This fund helps us reduce adoption fees and make up for the money we lose when adopting out animals for less than it costs us to fully vet them and care for them while at the shelter.

Remember, we can’t do this unless we get 73 tickets reserved. We need your help if we’re going to make this event happen!

If you have any questions or if you’d like more information about this or other LCHS events and fundraising opportunities, please email [email protected] or call 334-821-3222 x 15.

The Silver Wings Parachute Team out of Fort Benning, GA will bring down the Stars and Stripes at 7:30 p.m. during the Opelika 64th Annual Freedom Celebration.

Prior to their patriotic descent, children will have the opportunity to write their names on a paper plate to be placed on the baseball field. If one of the skydivers lands on their paper plate they will receive a prize.

Around 9 p.m., one of the largest fireworks shows in the area will commence as a variety of patriotic tunes play over the loudspeakers.

Opelika Parks and Recreation would like to thank the Orthopaedic Clinic, Kiwanis Club of Opelika, ESG, Opelika Police Department, Opelika Fire Department, Opelika Power Services, Opelika City Schools, Opelika City Council and Mayor Gary Fuller for their help and support of this major event.

Opelika’s 64th Annual Freedom Celebration will be held on Friday, July 1st at Opelika High School. Although the high school’s track will be under construction at the time of the event, it will still be held on school grounds. Opelika normally holds their Freedom Celebration on July 3rd, but since that falls on a Sunday this year, the event was moved up to the 1st. However, all other plans for the Freedom

Celebration will remain the same.

The Freedom Fun Kids Activities will begin at 6:30 p.m. By paying a fee of $2, children up to 10 years of age can participate in inflatable games, bounce houses and a giant flush tank. The area will be open until shortly before dark. Route 66 will take the bandstand at 7 p.m. and will play a variety of music throughout the evening.

Celebrate Independence Day with the entire Auburn Community, Auburn Parks and Recreation and Briggs and Stratton! Enjoy great food, live music from Reuben’s Bell, free goodies courtesy of Briggs and Stratton, and THE best fireworks display in the entire area! So grab your picnic basket, blanket, and the family and join us for a fabulous night of entertainment and a chance to show your patriotic spirit! Reuben’s Bell is a southern rock band with a modern twist! The band is comprised of members: lead vocals and guitarist Logan Daniels, percussion and vocals Brad Berry, and bassist Trey Lander. Drawing from an endless array of musical taste and styles, this Atlanta based band stays true to its Southern roots while also branching out into many other genres, creating a sound that is palatable to almost any listener. Gates open at 6 p.m.; Entertainment

begins at 7 p.m.; Fireworks begin at 9 p.m. The rain date is Tuesday, July 5th. The FREE celebration will be held behind the home side of the Duck Samford Football Stadium. Please remember - the parking lot off of Airport Road, which is shared between the Bo Cavin fields and the New Duck fields, will be closed to the public during the event to accommodate our fireworks shoot site. However, the parking lot off of E. University Dr. next to the Old Duck fields will be OPEN to the public for parking. FREE to the public.

School’s Outfor Summer

Getting your kids to eat right and maintain good oral hygiene can be a struggle during the summer. With extra activities like swimming and playing outdoors, there may even be a dental emergency or two. Here are a few tips for summer that will help you protect the kids and their developing teeth from long-term damage and avoidable mishaps. For additional tips, visit www.LilesSmiles.com.

Beginning in spring 2014, AP US History students at Auburn High School began an effort to document the stories of veterans in East Alabama and West Georgia as a way to honor their contributions to our nation’s history.

Over the past three years, 158 stories have been recorded, spanning our nation’s military history from World War II to current enlistments. Working in small groups, these students lead oral history interviews with participating veterans. Each oral history recorded is donated to the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, given to the participating veteran, and uploaded to the AHS Veterans Project website to help educate the community about the rich military tradition of the area.

This fall, students are inviting veterans of the Global War on Terror as well as

the First Gulf War to share their stories. These interviews, are designed to help commemorate the 15 years since 9/11 as well as the 25th anniversary of Operation Desert Storm. It is the hope of the AHS Veterans Project that through these interviews students can honor the brave veterans of our nation’s recent military history while learning more about America’s role in the global crises that have shaped the modern world.

Interviews are being held at Auburn High School on Thursday, September 15th as well as Friday, September 16th with times available for 8 a.m., 9:45 a.m., noon, and 1:45 p.m. Those wishing to participate or who have questions can contact Dr. Blake Busbin at Auburn High School either through email at [email protected] or by calling Auburn High School at (334) 887-4970.

You’re exposed to a lot more sunlight than

you think.

Without the proper protection, your eyes are vulnerable to damage, fatigue and sensitivity. You should always choose polarized sunglasses that block out 99% to 100% of harmful UV rays.

Top 5 Reasons to Wear Sunglasses:

1. UV ProtectionThe sun’s harmful UV rays can lead to serious and long-term health issues, including photokeratitis, cataracts, and macular degeneration. Sunglasses that do not provide UV protection can actually be more damaging for your eyes.

2. Skin Cancer5% to 10% of skin cancer occurs around the eyes.

3. General Eye ComfortThe sun’s brightness and glare interferes with the ability to see clearly, as well as comfortable vision, causing squinting, watering eyes and headaches.

4. Dark AdaptationIntense sunlight can interfere with the ability to adapt to indoor light levels or nighttime, making night driving difficult and even hazardous.

5. Blue-Light Protection(HEV: high-energy visible radiation)Protective sunglasses absorb HEV that accumulated exposure to has been associated with age-related macular degeneration(AMD).

protect your eyes and eliminate glare while driving or outdoors.

2016 has been a busy and exciting year for the Community & Cause program. In the last six months, we have grown our community reach to include both Auburn and Opelika. We have received very positive feedback from our readers who love learning about area events and our twelve nonprofit partners.

From the cover, you read that July is lemon-aid month. Lemon-Aid for a Cause is a Community & Cause event. We look forward to watching the kids create their lemonade businesses and learn what giving back entails. If you see lemonade stands pop up in your area, please take a moment to enjoy a fresh glass of lemonade from our area entrepreneurs. Your patronage goes right back to our twelve nonprofit partners.

Football season is only two months away. In preparation for the season, we are hosting Tailgate for a Cause on Saturday, August 27 from 11 a.m. to

3 p.m. at Ogletree Village in Auburn. Tailgate for a Cause provides a fun, competitive way for tailgate teams to show off their culinary skills. Families will enjoy tastes of tailgating food at various team tents. It will be an afternoon of live music and kid-friendly events. Prizes will be given for Taster’s Choice, Judges’ Choice and Best Overall theme. Tailgate for a Cause is a great way to kick off the upcoming football season, show your community spirit and help support the twelve Community & Cause nonprofits. Tickets are $10 per person and children are free.

The Community & Cause team appreciates our civic and business partners who have chosen to support our program. Mayor Bill Ham of Auburn and Mayor Gary Fuller of Opelika take the time to share their vision for a strong community with us each month. We hope that if you have a business need from one of our partners listed in the directory, you will

give them a call. Their partnership allows us to promote our great community from the tracks to the plains.

We thank you, our reader, for engaging in our area events and learning about our nonprofit partners. Auburn-Opelika is blessed to have citizens who are philanthropic and civic minded. Your support of community events allows for our nonprofits to accomplish their mission. If you have a suggestion or comment, please send us a note at [email protected]. We would love to hear from you.

One only has to google “fitness gad-gets” to be inundated with options that track your steps, movements and sleep. These gadgets may be able to help you make the best of your work-out sessions, track your health prog-ress and have fun at the same time. But are you placing the same energy in your workplace?

Allstate Benefits, Auburn Chamber, Auburn University Wellness Kitchen, Auburn Training Connection and Cornerstone Chiropractic recently teamed up to host a “Wellness in the Workplace” luncheon at the Auburn University Wellness Kitchen.

Attendees from area businesses learned first-hand the importance of a healthy office. Kent Howard, Allstate Employee Benefits emphasized the importance of workplace health pro-grams. People are spending most of their day at a desk or inside an office. Health promotion at the workplace

can curb the costs of rising health care, increase employee productivity and decrease days missed.

Brothers, Will and Rusty Herring joked about hiding the vegetables and the need for a balanced life. Will Herring, former NFL player and Auburn Alum-nus expressed his love of working out. When asked about his transition from the NFL to business man, Will stated that the gym is how he maintains bal-ance in his new “normal”. His brother Rusty echoed the need for balance and how his mission with Cornerstone Chi-ropractic is to create an environment for the body to heal and function.

Guests enjoyed an all-you-can-eat din-ing experience provided by the Auburn University Wellness Kitchen. William Walker, AU Wellness Kitchen’s man-ager explained the need for healthier food options for AU athletes and stu-dents. The kitchen provides menu choices for student-athletes to aid in

the preparation for and recovery from athletics competition, injury prevention and immune support, while meeting other consumption needs. William also mentioned a separate allergy kitchen to meet specific dietary needs. William in-troduced Ralf Du Toit of Extreme Green Hydroponics who provides the kitchen daily with fresh lettuce, micro-greens and tomatoes. Ralf demonstrated how hydroponic gardening works through water and nutrients in the absence of dirt and soil. The AU Wellness Kitchen is open to the public.

The Prewett Insurance Group with All-state Benefits hosts regular “Wellness in the Workplace” events to promote a healthy workplace environment.
