Worship with Us!

Sunday Worship – 9:30 a.m.

Children’s Sunday School concurrent with worship.

Building Faith ☩ Building Community ☩ Building Lives

A Word from Our Pastor

The Rev. Dr. Phyllis B. Milton,

Interim Senior Pastor/

Head of Staff

Be Still and Know . . .

These past few weeks, the staff in the church office have

been busy with pre-Lenten preparations; especially the

bulletins. Selecting a new setting for our Wednesday

Lenten services, going over the details for Ash

Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good

Friday, and Easter Sunday. Whew! And that’s just the

beginning!

Lent is observed as a time of introspection and

reflection. So how do we do that in the midst of

whatever is going on in our lives? A look at Psalm 46

can help us to have a proper perspective about Lent.

Psalm 46:10a (NRSV) - “Be still, and know that I am

God!

Often times, we just need to find time to “be still.”

Whether we can only offer five minutes or have the

luxury of 50 minutes, our starting place is to take a deep

breath and relax. Whatever we are involved in or

working on, definitely will not have gone away and will

be there waiting for us. During this Lenten season why

not try to “stop striving” for a period of time and just

“be.” “Be Still” can also mean to “put your hands

down” to signify that you have stopped struggling. So,

find a place where you won’t be disturbed and sit in

silence for a while. Now what, you might say.

Look at the second part of Psalm 46:10, “and know that I

am God.” Go over in your mind the many ways that

God has shown Himself to you in relationship with you.

Back in the old days, we would say “count your

blessings.” Lent is a time of remembering through very

specific observances like Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday,

Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday,

what God’s love for us has done for us in Christ Jesus.

But during your personal time of introspection and

reflection, recall what God has done for you, personally.

How has your life been shaped by the intimate

relationship God has with you because of your baptism?

By now, you know that music plays a spiritually

energizing force in my life, but there are also times that

music provides the reflection that is needed for a healthy

balance. So, I offer to you to begin your contemplation,

the words of Steven Curtis Chapman:

Be still and know that He is God.

Be still and know that He is Holy.

Be still, oh restless soul of mine.

Bow before the Prince of Peace.

Let the noise and clamor cease.

Be still and know that He is God.

Be still and know that He is Faithful.

Consider all that He has done.

Stand in awe and be amazed.

And know that He will never change.

Be still.

Be speechless.

Be still and know that He is God.

Be still and know He is our Father.

Come rest your head upon His breast.

Listen to the rhythm of

His unfailing heart of love.

Beating for His little ones.

Calling each of us to come.

Be still.

Lenten Blessings,

Pastor Phyl

Linda Robinson,

Head of School

Registration for our 48th school year begins on Monday,

March 9, for current students and congregation

members. Registration is open to the public on Monday,

March 16. If you plan on registering for our 2020-2021

school year and have not received a registration packet,

you may call our school office and request one, or you

may pick up a registration form at the Main Desk, Fox

Hill Campus or at the Willow Oaks School Office.

I strongly encourage you to take advantage of the

opportunity to register during the week of March 9-13 to

reserve placement for your child. For some programs

and grade levels, space is limited and classes may fill.

We are offering a registration fee discount for parents

taking advantage of this early registration opportunity.

If current students register by 6:00 p.m. on March 13,

the registration fee will be $50.00 per child instead of

$85.00. Take advantage of the reduced registration fee.

Gloria Dei Lutheran School offers school programs for

students 16 months of age through middle school. We

also offer before and after school child care and a

summer program. There are after-school clubs for

elementary and middle school students to include art,

music, S.T.E.M., Lego Club, basketball, and flag

football.

Each year’s program builds a foundation to enable

students to grow with sequential skill development to the

next grade level. As a child moves from one grade level

to another, the programs expand to offer a broader base

of activities and enriching experiences.

Children in our 16 month/2-year-old program are able to

enroll for a full-day program beginning with our summer

program. Children have a positive, first-school

experience while enjoying activities, art projects, games,

music, library, and Chapel. Students must be at least 16

months old on their entrance date to attend.

At the preschool level, we offer a half-day school

program with the option of hourly or full-time childcare

before and/or after school if needed. Preschoolers enjoy

weekly themed units, introduction to the alphabet and

phonics, counting and numbers, art, children’s literature,

learning games, music, Chapel, physical education, and

library. Preschool gives children the opportunity to

develop friendships, to learn to resolve conflicts, and to

grow socially as well as academically. Preschoolers

need to be potty-trained to attend and three years old by

December 31, 2020.

Students moving from preschool to prekindergarten

experience pre-reading activities with Handwriting

Without Tears, Word-a language development program,

Scholastic News, Mortimer Moose-an alphabet and

phonics program, and Handwriting Without Tears, Math.

Along with many classroom activities and games,

children enjoy weekly P.E., music, Chapel, and library.

Every other week, prekindergarten students learn about

nutrition with Chef Combo, visit the computer lab to

work with educational software, and participate in a

hands-on science experience in their science class. We

offer full-day or half-day prekindergarten programs as

options for parents.

We are excited about the addition of our Jump Start

Kindergarten program. Jump Start Kindergarten is

geared for students who are age appropriate for

kindergarten but who are not quite ready, for children

who are repeating prekindergarten, or for advanced

children entering prekindergarten. In order for preschool

students to be eligible for this program, they need to pass

a screening and have a teacher recommendation.

Students at the kindergarten level attend a full-day

program. All kindergarten classes are taught reading

with a phonetic program, Beginning to Read, Write, and

Listen by Macmillan/McGraw-Hill. What an exciting

time when your kindergartener reads to you for the first

time. Students enjoy the weekly resource classes they

participate in at the prekindergarten level with science

and computers becoming weekly classes. Students also

participate in a weekly Spanish program.

Our first – fifth grades are located at our Willow Oaks

Campus. This campus has all the essentials needed for

our students - computer lab, library, art/music room,

science room, P.E. athletic field, playground, infirmary,

and offices. The grades’ program builds strong

academic skills in phonetics and reading

comprehension, spelling, math, and writing while

offering an enriching resource schedule - weekly art

classes, extended computer time, P.E., Spanish, along

with weekly Chapel services, daily devotions, library,

music, chorus, and S.T.E.M. science lab.

Our middle school is also located at our Willow Oaks

Campus. We continue with our strong tradition of

academic excellence in a Christian environment with an

emphasis on the mental, spiritual, physical, emotional,

and social needs of students. Students change classes for

the core subjects of literature, grammar, composition,

math, science, and social studies. In addition, a well-

rounded program of resources will provide enrichment.

Resources, depending on grade level, include health,

study skills, conflict resolution, P.E. – basketball,

volleyball, gymnastics, rock climbing, dodge ball,

soccer, art – drawing, painting, project design, CSI,

geography, computers, photography, Lego Robotics,

Stop Motion Animation, woodworking, sewing, Chapel,

library, music, Bible, and MORE. Spanish, Geometry,

and Algebra are offered for transfer as high school

credits.

It is amazing what our students can accomplish with a

strong academic curriculum, enriching resource classes,

a spiritual foundation which reinforces values and

morals, a nurturing, caring environment, and a

partnership between home and school. Today, more

than ever before, it is vital for students to not only have a

solid, firm, educational foundation, but also a foundation

for moral and ethical standards. Children learn and

practice values and standards by example and guidance.

The experiences and environment that you are providing

for your child now will influence your child for a

lifetime. We welcome the opportunity to be a part of

your child’s life journey.

This is an abbreviated summary of what is offered for

our students as they progress from one level to the next.

As you prepare to register for next year, if you have

questions about our curriculum or would like additional

information, please call 757-851-6292. We are

appreciative of the opportunity to work with you and

your child.

God Bless, Linda K. Robinson, Head of School

Gloria Dei School Physical Education

Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten

The focus for the first semester has been on gross motor skills, balance and

coordination using circuits, across the floor activities and games. Some of their favorite

games consist of “Trash in the Backyard,” Kickball, and Relay Races. We will continue

to work on these skills for the rest of the school year!

1st Grade – 4th Grade

The first nine weeks, the focus was on the sport of soccer. The students worked on

dribbling, passing, shooting, and game-like scenarios. During the second nine weeks,

the focus has been on fitness and good sportsmanship through games and stations. One

of their favorite games is “Crack the Code.” We have also been jumping rope to

prepare for the Kids Heart Challenge coming up on February 18, 2020.

Wandering in the Wilderness

I’ve been your music minister for almost six months

now! I’m finally settling in here at Gloria Dei, and I’m

loving it. The newness is starting to wear off, the

hecticness of starting a new job is subsiding, and I’m

actually able to take a closer look at who Gloria Dei is

right now. Here’s what keeps rising to the surface for

me:

We are a people in transition.

We are deep, deep in the vagueness of the interim

period. You all said goodbye to a beloved pastor and

music minister at around this time last year, you

welcomed me in August, and now we’re all praying

together for God to send us the right person to be the

new pastor of this beloved place. We’re waiting oh-so-

patiently, right? Well, sometimes.

As I read the Bible passages prescribed for Lent,

planning and playing through music to fit each Sunday, I

realized how much we at Gloria Dei are like those

Israelites in the wilderness, wondering when God would

finally lead them to the Promised Land. “Any day now,

right, God??” We are so much like the Israelites right

now! “Gee, God, haven’t we been searching long

enough? We’d kind of like to get on with our lives!”

(Side note: We’re also torn, because Pastor Phyl is such

a gifted minister. I, for one, am not going to want to let

go of her!!)

As much as I, too, would love to hurry up and get on

with things, God was very firm with those Israelites that

their “interim period” in the wilderness was not

something they could skip. He was not going to let them

out of that desert until he knew they were ready. Perhaps

many of you have stories from your own lives, where

you were waiting and waiting for something, and as

painful as that waiting was, it gave you time to grow as a

person, to lean on others, and to let go of things that

were not actually important. Most importantly, perhaps

you grew deeper in your faith and closer to God. That is

the opportunity we have right now at Gloria Dei.

As your music minister, it’s my job to help you, through

the experience of worship and music, to imagine the

wonderful things God has planned for us. Music, and the

arts in general, help us get out of our own heads and

imagine how things could be. I’m speaking on behalf of

our congregation’s many music leaders here: Cantors,

the Worship Band, handbell groups, youth musicians,

Adult Choir, and instrumentalists. We are blessed with

an abundance of skilled musicians in this congregation.

These folks are eager to lead you into an encounter with

God through music.

The Adult Choir sang a song at the Offertory on

February 9 that embodies what I’m trying to say here

about transitions, interims, and imagination:

Imagine, imagine the people of God,

believing, receiving, becoming God’s love,

imagine the people of God.

Seeking the way of Jesus Christ, trusting the courage to

change,

being God’s love with our neighbors and friends,

imagine the people of God.

This Lent as we wander with the Israelites in the desert,

as we walk with Jesus in his forty days in the wilderness,

I hope we can accept that wandering as the gift that it is.

God is with us all the way. Easter Sunday will be that

much sweeter if we embrace all that Lent has to offer;

embracing our new pastor will be that much sweeter,

too, if we embrace all that this interim period has to

offer.

In deep gratefulness to you,

Ginny

PALM SUNDAY, APRIL 5

WORSHIP at 9:30 A.M., Sunday School at 9:30

A procession with palms as the congregation sings, “Hosanna in the highest, blessed is he who comes in the name of

the Lord!” leads us into the events of Holy Week.

MAUNDY THURSDAY, APRIL 9

7:00 P.M., (Nursery Provided)

This night, we will close off the time of repentance begun on Ash Wednesday. Being reconciled to God and to one

another, Maundy Thursday leads into an experience of celebrating God’s gift of salvation in the person and passion

of Jesus Christ. Holy Communion and the concluding act of stripping the altar prepare us for the solemnity of Good

Friday.

GOOD FRIDAY TENEBRAE, APRIL 10

7:00 P.M., (Nursery Provided) This worship service, called Tenebrae, is a Holy Week devotion dating from the seventh century. The name,

meaning “shadows,” refers to the gradual casting of the church into darkness as the events of that holy day are

revealed through music and the Word.

EASTER EGG HUNT, SATURDAY, APRIL 11

9:30 A.M., Fox Hill Campus This event is for children of Gloria Dei and the community ages 2-6 and is sponsored by Gloria Dei’s Youth Groups.

THE FESTIVAL OF THE RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD, APRIL 12

WORSHIP at 9:30 A.M. (No Sunday School)

“He is not here, He is risen,” is the principal proclamation of the Church on Easter that God has triumphed over sin

and death and, through the gift of the resurrection, offers the blessings and the assurances of His kingdom to all

who believe.

Easter worship employs our fullest resources in praising God. The sounds, colors, taste, and even the smell of

Easter lilies help raise God’s people to adoration of the one who “makes all things new!”

Daybreakers Bible Study

The Daybreakers Bible Study meets at 8:00 a.m. on the

first and third Tuesdays of each month in the Church

Conference Room 103 to study the pericopes (readings)

for the upcoming Sunday. All women are invited. We will

be meeting on March 3, 17, and April 7, 21.

Men’s Breakfast Bible Study

The Men’s Breakfast Bible Study meets on the second

and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 7:00 a.m. at

Vancosta’s Restaurant, 3830 Kecoughtan Road in

Hampton. All men are welcome to join. They are using

the book, “David-Developing a Heart for God.” We will

be meeting on March 10, 24, and April 14, and 28.

Tuesday Morning Bible Study

Our new study, Justice and the Prophets, will begin on

March 3, 10 am, in the Simeon Center. Author Walter

Bouzard says, “The study is the intersection of God’s

firm intentions (about Justice) and the behavior of God’s

people.” It is primarily an Old Testament study, but all

scripture intersects. Paula Jones leads the study. Please

call 757-850-2372 if you have questions. Everyone is

welcome!

JOY Lunch Group

The JOY (Just Older Youth) group meets with lunch

provided by Gloria Dei. These gatherings are held on the

third Wednesday of each month in the Simeon Center,

12:30 – 2:00 p.m. We will be meeting on March 18 and

April 15. Please RSVP to the church office, 851-2838 so

we can plan for enough food.

Women of Gloria Dei

We are the women of Gloria Dei, and we gather each

month to have fun, accomplish projects, and enjoy each

other’s company. All women of Gloria Dei are welcome

at all our activities!

Our March event is sure to bring a smile to your face—

we’ll be painting rocks! This trendy art-craft is a fun and

easy way to send a message to a friend, decorate your

planters, and just bring a little color into your every day.

We’ll meet at 7 pm on Monday, March 9, in the Simeon

Center. All supplies will be provided. Join us and be a

part of the support and friendship of the women of Gloria

Dei!

There will be no gathering for April due to the Easter

holidays.

Lutheran World Relief

Personal Care Kits

In late March, we will begin to collect items for our

LWR Personal Care Kits. These kits are supplied to

victims of catastrophes, natural and man-made, all over

the world and often provide the first hygiene relief for

these victims. LWR is usually the first to arrive and the

last to leave a disaster. The following are the items we

will need to complete each kit. All items should be new.

Assembly of the kits will take place on May 4. Gloria

Dei has an amazing history in providing for this project,

and we all appreciate your support.

Towel—40”x20” to 52”x27”, lightweight, darks

colors preferred

2 bath-sized bars of soap, left in original

wrapping

1 adult toothbrush, in original wrapping

1 sturdy comb (please, no thin rat-tailed)

1 regular sized metal nail clipper (please no tiny

clippers)

We thank you for your contributions!

God’s Work, Our Hands.

Women of Gloria Dei Book Club

On Monday, March 2, at the home of Mary Mace,

we will meet to discuss the book, The Wright

Brothers, by David McCullough. This book, with a

local spin, is a history made for non-historians to

read—with McCullough’s easy-to-read style. It is

the story with which we’re all familiar, and hearing

the tale of old Nags Head is a great read. We will

meet again on Saturday, March 7, to carpool to the

Outer Banks to tour the Wright memorial. Join us

for fun and fellowship.

Our book for April will be The Dovekeepers, the

story of the siege of Masada in 73AD. The women

came to this stronghold by many different means,

but their stories intertwine in this momentous time.

There is a date change. We will meet on Monday,

April 13, at 7 pm at the Rowlett’s. There’s always

an empty chair for you!

Wednesday Evening Adult Bible Study

We will not be meeting through Lent. Watch the

Weeklies for restart date and topic. Call Reverie Rowlett,

757-850-8236, with any questions.

Council Corner

As we prepare to enter the holy time of Easter, your

Congregation Council hopes that you will take the time

to reflect upon the true meaning of the season and to take

advantage of the many church-sponsored events that are

offered.

In the coming months we will be working to improve the

part of our operations that deal with internet access and

marketing for both our church and school. You may

have noticed that our positioning has improved

somewhat related to searches when someone is using a

search engine (like Google) while searching for school

or church information. We will be continuing to make

further improvements and enhancements that will

eventually include a redesign of our web sites to

improve their appearance and functionality.

As springtime approaches, we will begin to move

forward with our next Every Member Response

Campaign and would hope that, at such time, each of

you will prayerfully consider your financial support to

our church.

Keep the faith,

Ernie, Jason, Pastor Phyl, Rita, Todd, Alison, Dan,

Aaron, Garth, and Ashley

A Night’s Welcome – Thank you

Thank you, Gloria Dei congregation, for welcoming and

feeding the homeless on February 4. This was a very

successful team effort involving youth and adults. We

were able to provide and cook nutritious food, assemble

salads and dessert, serve dinner to more than 40 guests,

hand out warm clothing, provide security overnight, and

arrive in time to scramble eggs and make pancakes and

bacon for breakfast. Our guests loved the food and send

thanks to you all.

Prescription Medicine Collection

Nancy Monroe will accept prescription drugs that are

S. passport, U.S. Department of Defense ID, Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), etc.) to board a domestic flight or enter a secure federal facility beginning October 1, 2020.

What you need to get a REAL ID

All applicants for a REAL ID compliant credential, including current Virginia credential holders, must apply in-person and provide DMV with physical documentation of the applicant’s identity, legal presence, full Social Security number, Virginia residency (two proofs required) and, if applicable, name change. The following are examples of commonly used documents. There are many documents you can use. View the full list here. Bring one from each category:

2. Social Security card or W-2 form displaying full number

Bring two from this category:

Valid Virginia driver’s license, recent utility bills, mortgage statement, or rental lease agreements displaying current residential street address, not a P.O. Box. Note: You may redact (blackout/whiteout) sensitive financial information.

Are you signed up for AmazonSmile?

While we have some members participating in the AmazonSmile program, we would like to invite anyone who uses Amazon to participate. We have already received over $350 from this program, and we can generate much more. Overall Amazon has donated over $105,000 million to charities per the direction of you the users. See the information below and sign up!!!

What is AmazonSmile? AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support your favorite charitable organization every time you shop, at no cost to you. When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you’ll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to your favorite charitable organization. You can choose from over one million organizations to support.

How do I shop at AmazonSmile? To shop at AmazonSmile simply go to smile.amazon.com from the web browser on your computer or mobile device. You may also want to add a bookmark to smile.amazon.com to make it even easier to return and start your shopping at AmazonSmile.

Which products on AmazonSmile are eligible for charitable donations? Tens of millions of products on AmazonSmile are eligible for donations. You will see eligible products marked “Eligible for AmazonSmile donation” on their product detail pages. Recurring Subscribe-and-Save purchases and subscription renewals are not currently eligible.

Can I use my existing Amazon.com account on AmazonSmile? Yes, you use the same account on Amazon.com and AmazonSmile. Your shopping cart, Wish List, wedding or baby registry, and other account settings are also the same.

How do I select a charitable organization to support when shopping on AmazonSmile? On your first visit to AmazonSmile smile.amazon.com, you need to select a charitable organization to receive donations from eligible purchases before you begin shopping. We will remember your selection, and then every eligible purchase you make at smile.amazon.com will result in a donation.

What if my selected charity does not register to participate in the AmazonSmile program or becomes ineligible? If your selected charity does not register to participate, becomes ineligible, or requests to be removed from the program, you will have a chance to select a different charity to receive the accrued donations that have not yet been disbursed to your charity. If you do not select a different charity, the accrued donations will be distributed to other organizations receiving donations.

How much of my purchase does Amazon donate? The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price from your eligible AmazonSmile purchases. The purchase price is the amount paid for the item minus any rebates and excluding shipping & handling, gift-wrapping fees, taxes, or service charges. From time to time, we may offer special, limited time promotions that increase the donation amount on one or more products or services or provide for additional donations to charitable organizations. Special terms and restrictions may apply. Please see the relevant promotion for complete details.

Can I receive a tax deduction for amounts donated from my purchases on AmazonSmile? Donations are made by the AmazonSmile Foundation and are not tax deductible by you.
