What an exciting time; I always look forward to the beginning of the school year.

First, I again want to thank all the parents who contributed to our Cadet Code, which we

will be implementing this year. These are not rules, they are simply how we will do things,

more of a routine. I like to think of our Cadet Code as the things our grandma taught us, or

the expectations of an older brother if you are dating his younger sister. In essence, these

are employability skills. I believe that once established, our Cadet Code will have an

impact on our culture. I would ask that as parents you read through these and reinforce

these traits at home as well.

Other changes this year will be “Parents Night;” some of our teachers will be inviting you

to attend four night sessions to learn what we are teaching your children. Research is clear

that parent involvement is an essential ingredient for the success of our students. I hope

you will be able to participate in these evenings.

Cadet Code

Classroom - School

Code 1 -When responding to any adult, you must verbally respond

appropriately

Code 2 Make eye contact. When someone is speaking, keep your eyes on

him or her at all times. If someone makes a comment, turn and

face that person.

Code 3 -Do not smack your lips, tsk, roll your eyes, or show disrespect

with gestures or comments.

Code 4 -Always be an encourager: Show good sportsmanship at all

times. “If you win, do not brag. If you lose, do not show anger.”

Code 5 -Respect all comments, opinions and ideas. When possible,

make statements such as “I agree with John because. . .” or “I

disagree with Sally because...”

Code 6 -Always come to class prepared. Homework will be turned in

each day for each subject by every student with no exceptions.

Code 7 -While you are with a substitute teacher or Para, you will obey

the same rules that you follow when I am with you.

Code 8 -If any child in this school is bothering you, let me know. As

your teacher, I am here to look after you and protect you. I am

not going to let anyone in this school bully you or make you feel

uncomfortable. In return, I ask that you not take matters into your own hands;

let me deal with the student.

Code 9 -We will clean up after ourselves.

Life Skills Code 10 -Respect other people, their belongings and this environment. Code 11 -If you approach a door and someone is following you, hold the door.

Code 12 -During an assembly give the speaker your undivided attention.

Code 13 -Remember to say Please and Thank you. This includes when someone gives you

something. If you do not say it within 3 seconds after receiving the item, I will take it back.

There is no excuse for not showing appreciation.

Code 14 -If you are asked a question in conversation, you should ask a question in return.

Code 15 -Surprise others by performing random acts of kindness. Go out of your way to do

something surprisingly kind and generous for someone at least once a month.

Doing Your Best Code 16 -Be positive and enjoy life. Some things just aren't worth getting upset over. Keep

everything in perspective and focus on the good in your life.

Code 17 -Accept that you are going to make mistakes. Learn from them and move on.

Code 18 -No matter what the circumstances, always be honest. Even if you have done something

wrong, it is best to admit it to me because I will respect that, and oftentimes I will forget any

disciplinary measures because of your honesty.

Code 19 -Be the best person you can be.

West Point-Beemer PK-4 Elementary Schools

Wow! Another year is upon us! This will be an even greater year than last school year, AND it was

outstanding last year. (First year for me) I would suggest to you that 2016-17 is going to be an “out of this

world” year based upon returning staff. On that note, Mandy Bordovsky will be our elementary secretary with

Karina Garcia filling the student services secretary position. New teachers in the elementary are Tyler Brester,

grade 1 and Kelly Gubbels grade 2. Mrs. Amy Steinmeyer will assume the grade 1 & 2 teaching position at

the Beemer site this 2016-17 school year. I will continue to serve the West Point-Beemer PK-4 Elementary

sites. Please feel welcome to visit your school in person. Give us a call to schedule a time and come on up!

We look forward to fostering positive relationships with parents, students, community, and teamwork amongst

our staff!

As we begin a new reading program referred to as Wonders this school year we are putting an

emphasis on reading skills, specifically comprehension and thinking skills. Saxon Math continues as our math

curriculum. When you visit, you will note the many colorful room murals and themes added this summer!

We continue to work at improving our state testing scores. Parental involvement and student attendance is a

must for this to occur! I would add that many of your staff have been donating time and working hard during

the summer months to improve via additional professional development in reading, text dependent analysis,

and differentiated instruction to provide for “all” children. Let us all work together towards teaching our

Cadet Code with high standards for our students, staff, and parents.

West Point-Beemer Middle School

Welcome back from the Middle School! I hope your summer has been enjoyable and you have had time to

relax and spend time with family and friends. As you see this summer come to an end, you look forward to

the new challenges and opportunities of a new school year. I am excited to get the new school year started.

This fall, we will implement some new ideas to help the students at West Point Beemer Middle School. This

year, we are going to be implementing the “Cadet Code.” This code is made up of 19 items that the staff of

West Point Public Schools along with the community of West Point thought were important skills for our

young people to have. This items are all examples of interpersonal skills. Now some of you might be

wondering why we are trying to teach such young children interpersonal skills. The answer is simple. We all

want the students of West Point Public Schools to be contributing members of society. We want them to

strive for great things and inspire others to do the same. We feel that these skills will allow them greater

opportunities to accomplish these things.

More changes that are coming for the middle school is the implementation of the “Student Success” room.

This room will be a place where we can more actively engage students who are struggling in the classroom.

Ms. Bernt will be in this room and offer additional help to any student who needs it or is placed there. I am

confident that she will do a great job for our students who need her help.

As we did last year, we will again be using our Chromebooks on a regular basis with our 1:1 initiative.

Again, each student will have a computer while at school. The middle school students will not be able to take

these computers home; however, they will have access to them thoughout the school day. We believe that

this has been a tremendous addition to our educational capabilities.

As in years past, we will have orientation nights prior to school to allow parents and students to come in and

become more familiar with the make-up of their new settings. These orientation nights will be held on

August 16th in the Elementary Gym. The 5th through 8th grade orientation will start at 6:00pm. Please plan to

attend as these meetings will give you and your student a chance to hear some important information as well

as ask questions.

I am anxious and excited to get this school year off to a good start and to get to know you and your student

better.

West Point-Beemer High School

I hope you are all having a great summer! As we approach the new school year we will

have several new faces at WPBHS. Meghan Schneider will take over our Spanish

Department, Monica Wiehn will teach Physical Education to our all levels of students,

Adam Skoda will join us in Science; Teresa Person fills our vacancy in English, and

Steihl Reeves joins our Social Science Department. Each one of these individuals

brings new skills and talents to our district, and we are very excited to have them.

Please help me in welcoming them to our district!

You may have already received, or will be receiving, a letter from school with

important dates on orientation nights for all students in grades 9-12. Our new student

management system Infinite Campus, the Cadet Code, and our student laptop policies

are a few of the topics will discus. It is essential that we have at least one parent or

guardian attend these meetings. Students are welcome but are not required to attend.

My goal is to give you necessary information, answer any questions you may have and

allow you some time to complete the forms needed so we may start the school year off

smoothly.

I am ready for an amazing school year and the new opportunities it has to offer. I look

forward to seeing you at orientation.

Welcome back to another school year of West Point-Beemer Cadet Activities!

Summer has quickly pasted, and the start of fall sports are upon us. Dates for the start of fall practices have been set

by the NSAA. Official start dates for football, girls’ golf, and softball are August 8th, and volleyball and cross

country begin August 15th. Athletes, remember that you will need to have a completed physical signed and turned

into the office before you can practice. Student-athletes who are in the 9th and 11th grade, or new to the district will

need to establish a neurocognitive ImPACT baseline test before the start of their season.

Once again this year, the NSAA along with the NFHS has set mandatory heat acclimatization policy for the start of

fall practices. Warm temperatures and high humidity levels are very dangerous, and we must take every

precautionary measure to keep our athletes safe. Also this year, the NSAA placed contact limitations for high school

football season in hopes to reduce injuries/concussions to players. Information regarding the 14-day heat

acclimatization period and football contact limitations can be found on the NSAA website (www.nsaahome.org), or

you may contact me if you would like further explanation.

Activity passes will once again be available for purchase in the high school office. Students who participate in an

NSAA sponsored activity in a specific season (i.e. fall, winter, or spring) will receive an activity pass at NO

CHARGE that will allow them admission to activities for that SPECIFIC SEASON ONLY . Each pass will be

coded for each specific season and will expire at the end of that NSAA period. Students who do not complete their

season will have their passes revoked. Students who are not involved in an activity for that specific season may still

purchase an activity pass. More information about activity passes are located on the next page.

The dates for the fall sports scrimmages have been set for Thursday, August 18 & Friday, August 19. On Thursday,

girls’ golf will hold a scrimmage at 4:00 pm at Indian Trails, softball at 5:00 pm at Timmerman Park, and cross

country at 5:30 pm at the high school. Following those scrimmages, there will be a fall sports parent-athlete meeting

at 6:30 pm at the high school to go over general athletic policies. On Friday, the Lady Cadet volleyball team will

hold their scrimmage at 5:30 pm, and the Cadet football team scrimmage will start at 7:00 pm.

In closing, I am very excited about the upcoming school year, and look forward into working with such great

coaches/sponsors, and especially the student-athletes. I am a firm believer that participation in school activities/

athletics helps students acquire valuable skills and teach many life lessons along the way. Coaches have a

tremendous platform in which they can play a positive influence in a young adolescent’s life. It is our job to make

sure each and every student has a rewarding experience. Go Cadets!!

ACTIVITIES PASS INFORMATION

All Activity Passes may be purchased in the High School Office

For the 2016-2017 school year, the Athletic Department will be giving a free Athletic pass to

students who participate in an NSAA sanctioned Athletic event each season, fall, winter and

spring. Students who participate in 1 or more activities per season will receive an Athletic

pass that will admit them into all .

WP-B home events free for that season. This will exclude the musical and all conference

and district tournaments. At the beginning of each season, the student will be given their

pass. Each season the pass will be a different color.

**Any Student who does not complete the season will forfeit his pass.

Students not participating in an NSAA Sanctioned Athletic event will be able to purchase a

student pass for $35.00.

This pass will get students into all home activities for the entire 2015-2016 school year. This will exclude the Musical and all

conference and district tournaments. Students will be given a sticker that will be put on the back of their Student ID.

Students will have to present their Student ID at the activity to be admitted for free. If a student loses his ID, a $10.00 fee

will be assessed to receive a replacement card.

Adult Passes - $65.00 (Season Pass) Excludes the musical and all conference and district tournaments.

Senior Citizen Passes - $35.00 (Season Pass) 65 and older – Excludes the musical and all conference and

district tournaments

FAMILY PASS - $150.00

For the 2015-2016 school year, we will offer a family pass. The cost of the pass will be $150.00. The pass will admit

immediate family members only, which includes the parents and children. The pass is good for a family of 6, 2 Adults and 4

children (K – 12 students). The family pass will admit your family into all home activities for the entire school year,* excluding

the musical and all conference and district tournaments.

*2016-2017 East Husker Conference price of admission to activities will be

$5.00 for Adults and $4.00 for students. Admission price for JV/JH contest will

be $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for students.

GUIDANCE NEWS: West Point-Beemer High School & Middle School

Sandy Ahlers, High School Guidance Counselor , Sandy Luebbe, Middle School Guidance Counselor

Summer is quickly coming to an end, and that means we’ll be

back to school before we know it! We hope everyone is looking

forward to beginning the new school year as much as we are! On the

first day of school all 5 - 8th grade students will begin the day with an

assembly. Signs will be posted with the location. At that time,

Middle School students will receive their schedules and planners.

Students and parents are asked to read the Student Handbook in the

front of the planner, then sign and return the acknowledgement form

from the handbook within the first week of school. Please feel free to

questions or concerns.

5th through 8th Grade Orientation

5th through 8th Grade Orientation will be held Wednesday, August

16 at 6:00 p.m. in the Elementary Gym. It is recommended that all

completed, parent logins for Infinite Campus can be set and new

information about the school year will be provided.

New Student Orientation

New Middle School and High School students are encouraged to

visit with their guidance counselors, register for courses and tour the

building if you have not already done so between of 8:30 a.m. and

3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 10, 2016.

9th & 10th Grade Orientation

9th & 10th Grade orientation is set for August 15, 2016 at 6:30 p.m.

in the High School Gym. All freshman & sophomores and their

Middle School News

Junior/Senior Meeting & Dual Credit

Registration

The senior meeting is set for August 16, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. in the

High School Gym. Also, senior and junior students who have

preregistered for college credit classes for first semester will have

the opportunity to review the test requirements for the English and

math classes. Please contact Northeast Community College and take

the COMPASS test prior to the beginning of the year if you have not

taken the ACT Test. It is highly recommended that students and

their parents attend this meeting. Please contact Mrs. Ahlers 402-

paperwork and forms are completed, parent logins for Infinite

COLLEGE NIGHT 2016 TO BE HELD!!

College Night will be held August 31 at the Nielsen Community

Center from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Speak to representatives from

2016 testing date if possible. Below you will see a complete list of

www.act.org. ACT also provides a publication entitled, “Preparing

John Baylor ACT Prep Course Offered

The John Baylor ACT Prep On-line course is an investment by our

school to assist your student in preparing for the ACT (an important

measure used for college admission and financial aid).

Junior & senior students who plan to attend a 2 or 4 year college

will have access to all of the ACT Prep sessions, materials and

college counseling content. There are 12, 45 minute on-line sessions

to be completed over a 5 week period.
