From the Superintendent’s Office…
Recently we have been putting a lot of work into two possible
changes in our Student Handbook that could have an impact on day to day
school life. These changes wouldn’t take place until the 2016-17 school
year, but they have to be addressed now if we expect to implement them in
time.
The first potential change begins with the premise that involvement
in extracurricular activities is a privilege. Student participation in non-
classroom events is good since that’s often where character formation takes
place. We consequently want all our students involved in activities that
occur after the school day is over. Yet it is important to acknowledge that
these events are secondary to what happens during the school day.
Because participation in these extracurricular events is a privilege
there must be a corresponding responsibility for the students to fulfill, and
that is to be academically successful. We are therefore working to develop
what is commonly known as an Academic Probation policy, which our school does not currently have. What
Academic Probation means is that if a student is not successful in his school work then he will be prevented from
participating in extracurricular activities until he can get his grades up. I am happy to report that I’m working with
a group of teachers and administrators who sincerely desire what is in the best interest of the students.
Another change we are considering is about how we spend our time in the school day. Studies have shown
that “time on task”, time spent in actual academic work, is the only thing proven to increase learning. These studies
reflect why the United States, a country that provides a great quantity of material resources to schools, lags behind
in worldwide rankings for education. They might also at least partially explain why we have plenty of room to
improve our own school’s ACT scores.
As you might be aware, we have a significant amount of study hall time during the day, particularly at the
junior high level. Without going into the details as to why – and there are some very good reasons for the kind of
schedule we have – we are working to reduce the time the student is not “on task”. We currently have no trouble
making the State of Nebraska’s minimum requirement for number of days in school yet we struggle to reach the
required minimum number of class time minutes. Adjusting the daily schedule can make a big difference for us.
You can expect to hear more about them in the future. In the meantime, feel free to let me know if you have
any opinions on either of these matters. And, of course, your continued prayers for the Neumann family will make
all of our endeavors successful. I thank you for that help.
Fr. Morin

It has come to our attention that students are bringing e-cigarettes to school. Along with unknown side effects of e-cigarettes (see links
listed below), Bishop Neumann’s policy for cigarettes includes e-cigarettes:
Smoking
Nebraska School Law does not permit students to smoke or to use smokeless tobacco on school property. The use or possession
of smoking materials (including the wearing of nicotine patches) or look-alikes is forbidden in the school building, on school grounds,
in front of the school, or at school-sponsored activities.
Students found smoking (including e-cigarettes), chewing tobacco, or wearing nicotine patches will receive two detentions and a
parent meeting will be required. Students in possession of smoking materials, chewing tobacco or look-alikes will receive one deten-
tion and a parent meeting will be required. Suspension will result for any student who continues to abuse this rule. (p. 25 of the hand-
book)
Also, while the “Alcohol and Drug Use Related Policies” do not specifically include e-cigarettes, Bishop Neumann and our extracurricular
activities will treat these devices as a tobacco product and the consequences for using these devices – in or out of school – will be the same
as consequences for using tobacco.
See these links for more information about e-cigarettes:

This year’s Saunders County Catholic Schools Gala will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2016.
The theme will be GALA 2016 Out of This World . We can’t put on a GALA without our
students, parents, alumni, volunteers, donors and attendees. Each of you make a difference to
our schools, and for that, we are eternally grateful. Our gifted volunteers are sketching out fun
ideas and preparing to make this year’s GALA an evening to remember. We will have
wonderful auction items as well as the famous raffle, with
cash prizes totaling $12,500.
We Need Gifts!!!!
A successful GALA only comes about with a wide variety of gifts for our auctions. Please start now
figuring out that special gift that will help make our GALA a success. Show your true Saunders
County Catholic School spirit by giving something to our GALA event. Our gifts committee try hard
every year to find things that our guests would love, but we need your help.

Freshmen Parents:
During the month of January, Mr. Rezac's freshmen Literature and Composition class will be
reading Night, the story of a 15 year-old boy's experiences in the Holocaust. After reading the
book, the class will be watching Schlinder's List, a powerful and truthful account of the Jewish
experience during the Holocaust. This movie is graphic and includes some rough language and
violence. If any parents have concerns about this, they should contact Mr. Rezac at school. If a
parent does not want their child to see this film, alternate assignments can be worked out that will
not have a negative impact on the student's grade. Thanks, Mr. Tim Rezac

The name of the newsletter is a play
on words: “plume” being French for
“pen” and English for “feather” —
representing the pen of the journalist
and the plume in the Cavalier’s hat.
(Taken from the The Plume, Vol. I,
No. 1, p. 1. Oct. 1964)
