The selection process is as follows:

• The student’s family will be required to formally apply for a Bursary for their son or daughter by completing a Bursary Application form.

• A short list of applicants will be drafted and those students will be interviewed by a select committee, including the Director of Boarding and members of the Whiting family.

The Award winner is presented with a certificate, medal and an allocated sum towards their school fees to complete Years 11 and 12 at Sacred Heart College. The number of recipients and the size of the bursary varies at the discretion of the Whiting family.

Earlier this week, Nick and Catherine Whiting presented the 2019 Bursaries to Angus Clarke, Demi Hebberman and Jamie Smith. Nick spoke of his affinity with Boarding families, the Bursary and the support the family gives to the Boarding community. He also mentioned he was a student when Shane Hennessy began teaching at Sacred Heart! Our two guests joined us for Boarders Dinner with the Principal, the three Bursary recipients and Zoe Morris, Marcus Lippett, Gemma Horgan and James Crossman who were the 2018 recipients.

Angus Clarke was also pleased to share that his station, 200kms North East of Broken Hill, had received its first rain in several months last week and probably the most for well over a year - not a drought breaker but a nice start! A Whiting Bursary and some rain - what a terrific week for the Clarke family!

Again, we thank the Whiting Family for their enduring support of Sacred Heart and especially the Boarding Community.

Kind regards,

Steve ByrnePrincipal

MusicBringing it all together!

This Term has been an exciting journey in planning and performance events in preparation for the Champagnat Music Program beginning in 2019. Aside from the usual end of year music events, such as school Fetes, Band Sandwich and pageants, we have brought together our music teams and students from across Marymount and the Middle School to begin the preparations for next year.

Champagnat Music Program LaunchIn Week 2 we launched the Champagnat Music Program, which was an informal question and answer session with many students and parents attending, keen to see what the music programs will look like next year. This event culminated in a combined band performance involving the students of Marymount and the Middle School.

Combined Primary School Band TourOur Primary School Band Tour took place this week and for the first time, this incorporated a large combined ensemble made up of students from across Marymount and the Middle School. We visited three different schools who were each entertained with an hour concert featuring our stage bands, studio ensemble, concert band, ukulele group and drumcorp.

2019 Music Ensemble and Instrumental NominationsOur Nominations for students to be involved in the Champagnat Campus Music Program next year have gone home this week to all families of students currently enrolled in the ensemble or instrumental programs. It is important we receive these back quickly so we can best plan for next year. There is also opportunity for students who are not currently enrolled in the present programs to enrol for next year. Forms are available from the music coordinators, Mike Ellul or Jenni Stam. Please email if you would like a form and information pack. Nominations will also be accepted via the usual online systems, but please make sure these are done as early as possible to secure places.

Academy Program 2018The Music Academy has had a great deal of success this year, with many students in Years 6 and 7 graduating Level 1 and 2. We are very proud of our developing young musicians as they prepare themselves to progress into higher level ensembles in 2019.

Instrument ReturnIf you have hired an instrument either at Marymount, the Middle or Senior School, please return these to your coordinator with your name clearly labelled on the instrument for inspection by the end of Week 7.

...and look out for the Drumcorp at this Sunday’s Glenelg Christmas Pageant!

Army CadetsThe Australian Army Cadets of Sacred Heart recently participated in a yearly Annual Field Exercise, where they engaged in many activities, such as high ropes, rock climbing, zip lining, obstacle courses, live firing at the ranges, engineering, signals, medics, robotics, 5k run, live explosion demonstrations and many more exciting activities. All of those who participated enjoyed the week-long camp and trained in many different areas, developing new skills and essentially forming the person they have now become.

From the Head of Champagnat CampusChampagnat Parent ForumOn Monday 26 November, we will host our final Parent Forum for 2018. The evening will provide an opportunity to meet the Champagnat Campus Leadership Team, hear a building update and engage in discussions around various aspects of the new campus. New and existing families are welcome. The forum will take place in the Kavanagh Room at the Middle School and will begin at 7.00pm.

2019 ArrangementsEarly next week, families will receive a letter outlining key information in preparation for Champagnat Campus. The letter will outline arrangements for Day 1 as well as your child’s House and Homeroom Teacher allocation. Included in the letter will be a copy of 2019 Parent Handbook, which will provide detailed information regarding school processes. We are very conscious that families will be keen to see the new Campus and meet their child’s Head of House and Homeroom teacher. We are currently planning a Welcome Evening for the beginning of the 2019 school year, which will be coupled with an open house so that families can explore the new and exciting facilities.

A time of transitionOver the past two weeks our students have engaged in their final round of transition experiences. It has been a joy to see them grow in confidence and make new connections. Our Year 8 Transition day saw the announcement of our 2019 Champagnat Campus Leadership group. They are an outstanding group of young people and we look forward to their leadership in our inaugural year. Our Year 9s will venture to Marcellin Campus on Friday to explore their new surrounds and meet key leaders who will support in their transition. The girls are looking forward to the excitement a new campus brings and the learning opportunities that will follow.

Holdfast Bay Community ProjectLast Tuesday the SHAKARE group (comprised of four Year 9’s and four Year 7’s), spent the day painting Indigenous symbols on outdoor furniture at the Holdfast Bay Community Centre. Lyn, the Manager of the Centre was delighted that the girls were keen to raise awareness of Indigenous culture for all visitors to enjoy. The girls planned and created some lovely art work and at the same time, had a lot of fun!

National PE WeekWeek 5 marked the annual celebration of National PE Week at the Middle School. The week was a great success - not only were the boys excited about the option of wearing their PE gear on ‘non-PE’ days, but they also thoroughly enjoyed the many events which took place throughout the week. Thanks to all staff who gave up their mornings and lunchtimes to run these events for the boys.

Throughout the week, classes were challenged to work together to come up with answers to the ‘PE Week Quiz’ - thanks to Mr Jordan for putting this together!

Monday saw the launch of PE Week and students of all ages enjoyed a game of cricket on the oval before school with Mr Hext, as well as a tennis challenge with Mrs Hogg at lunchtime. On Tuesday, Mr Ottens was on the lookout for talented Quarter Backs with the gridiron throw before school. On Wednesday, the bike racks were filled up thanks to our ‘Ride to School’ initiative and students enjoyed a ‘nearest the pin’ challenge and a staff vs student volleyball match run by Miss Hayes and Mrs Tinnion’s volleyball team. On Thursday, boys flocked to the gym for some ‘netball soccer’ before school and some badminton at lunchtime with Mr Jordan and on Friday we saw some ‘classic catches’ on the oval and the school’s fittest athletes taking on the ‘beep test’ in the gym with Mr Jackson.

The week was once again a resounding success. Thank you to all the boys for again embracing PE Week!
