Dear All,

The students of Class XII have begun their preparation for their ISC board examination

next year. As it is our first batch, we are eager and confident.

I must mention the importance of the forthcoming examination. Academic excellence

is something I will not dwell upon. By now all are aware of its importance. But there

must be a paradigm shift in approach. The students are now ready to contribute as

global citizens and must be prepared accordingly.

The years of toil put in and the social system has helped put in, to bring them to this

stage and should not be in vain. Let us not be presumptuous that academic excellence

will suffice. As they begin this new phase they will continue to need the goodwill of all

those who matter and correspondingly they must be prepared to repay with honesty and

integrity.

Their behaviour should reflect the knowledge they have acquired and ensure that

knowledge acquisition becomes a habit.

With Warm Regards

John Andrew Bagul

South City International School have always taken multifarious initiatives under the

guidance of our Principal, Mr. John Andrew Bagul to increase the awareness about

plant diversity and need for it's conservation.

The topic of the talk show was " Does India need Sustainable Development of its For-

ests for its future?" The participants shared their valuable inputs on the issue putting

emphasis on a very recent report stating that Madhya Pradesh which covers 30.72% of

its area under forests and who ranked first among the states in terms of forest cover,is

fast losing its dense forest and the loss has been alarming in the last two years.

They pointed out that Scientists have estimated that at least 100,000 plants are threat-

ened with extinction--that's more than one-third the total known species of plants on

the planet! The main threats to forests today are habitat destruction, invasive species,

and over-collection.

The participants in unison explained that sustainable development is the only answer

to this growing problem.

As per the participant's suggestions, following steps can be taken for sustainable

development of forests:

(a) Maintenance of perfect coordination between forest department and other de-

partments.

(b) People‟s participation in the conservation of forests is of vital importance.

(c) The cutting of trees in the forests must be stopped at all costs.

(d) Celebrations of all functions, festivals should proceed with tree- plantation.

(e) Cutting of timber and other forest products should be restricted.

(f) Forest Conservation Act, 1980 should be strictly implemented to check deforesta-

tion.

(g) Joint Forest Management (JFM) should be implemented.

(i) Agro-forestry & Social Forestry should be practiced.

Van Mahotsav was celebrated as part of Empty classroom programme.

„Children should be surrounded with the things of nature which have their own educational value. Their minds should be al-lowed to stumble upon and be surprised at everything that happens in today‟s life.‟

This is the main idea on which, Rabindranath Tagore‟s School at Santiniketan, rested its first foundation. On the 17th Of June, under the

guidance of our Principal, Mr. John Andrew Bagul, South City International School celebrated the „Empty Classroom Day‟.

Children‟s minds are sensitive to the influences of the world. Their subconscious minds are active, always imbibing some lesson, and realiz-

ing the joys of knowing. This sensitive receptivity allows them to learn without any strain. Because of this, their introduction to the world of

reality is easy and joyful. When the child is surrounded by nature and breathes fresh air ,the mind is like a sponge, absorbing as much as is

available around it.

It was a pleasure to see the children learn Music, Dance, Art and Craft, Science and even Quizzing out in the open.

Music Day is a connected set of free public events which takes place each year on the 21st June, our midsummer. Each year there are events

in over 120 countries and 700 cities around the world. The event, having originated in France in 1982, is also known as Fête de la Musique

or World Music Day. Since then the idea has spread across the globe with each event holding onto the same simple set of principles: that the

day is held on the mid-summer solstice and that all concerts and events are free and accessible to the public.

Ten students of Class VII C presented a wonderful musical show comprising four types of music such as: Bangladeshi folk music, Nepalese

music, Pop music, Pakistani Sufi music, with their vocal renditions and highlighting the unique qualities of each form of music.

I remember Kaushal as an excellent boy and as a good human be-

ing. He was more than a friend to me, he was like a brother. Al-

ways with me in my happiness and sorrows. I remember helping

him in the exams. Another moment I remember was after our fi-

nal exams. We were playing football in the ground and he had

bought a new pair of shoes for goalkeeping; he was very keen on

playing football. We used to eat together every day and share our

food. He never said no to us for anything. I also remember, every

time we got into trouble, Kaushal never hesitated in taking the

blame on himself and saving us from trouble. I still remember the

day when Apilla Ma’am called some of us to the conference

room. I didn’t know the reason. We were surprised to see

Kaushal there. We were filled with joy. We talked to him for a

long time and then he left.

I remember, it was the 10th of June and I was studying in my

room when my father called me and broke the news that Kaushal

had passed away. I was devastated. I went back to my room. I

tried to study but I was not able too. The grief was too much for

me to bear. it would take some time for me to come to terms with

the loss. Kaushal is in our hearts and will always be there forever.

The workshop was conducted by Mr. Bobby Chak-

raborty, a well known actor and an Anti-Drug cru-sader. He addressed the secondary students and encouraged them to keep away from any kind of addiction. The tagline of his campaign was: 'I am the king of my mind'. He urged students to rule their own minds and order it to obey commands rather than let it give orders. The young must un-derstand the fatality of addictions and the need to say no to them. The actor shared his knowledge on the negative effects of tobacco in the workshop and the need to create awareness about anti-smoking.

The interactive session had the students asking relevant and pertinent questions and sharing their views on this burning issue. Report by – Swastika Mukherjee (Class VII)

A conversation with Bobby Chakraborty Samkitt: What got you interested? Bobby Chakraborty: My own uncle whom I thought to be my hero was a victim of these drugs and cigarettes. He used to spend all his pocket money on these drugs which killed him. He went so mad that he even hit his own father. Seeing this I wanted to spread awareness regarding the harmful effects of drugs on a person and their family and save the suc-ceeding generation from this poison. Samkitt: How did you begin this campaign? : Bobby Chakraborty : I began this campaign with the tagline am the king of my mind'. I go to different schools and explain to students that they must rule their mind; and order it to obey commands rather than let it give the orders. The young must understand the fatality of addictions and the need to say no to them. Samkitt: How do you see this campaign spanning out in the future? Bobby Chakraborty: Even now on my Facebook page I have many followers who agree with me and want to help in this initiative. Most of my followers are students who have agreed to come to different schools with me to spread this initiative so that young boys and girls don't poison their lives. The students of different schools have been very responsive and most of them agree with me. So I think that this campaign can go very far in the future. Samkitt: ln which way can the student generation help you achieve this dream?

Bobby Chakraborty: As I already told you, many students want to help me in this initiative. Also as you children are the future, by spreading awareness among you so that you don't poison your lives, in the future there will be very few people who drink or smoke. Also students can tell their parents and other relatives if they drink or smoke, its harm and try to persuade them to stop. This is how I think the student generation can help me in this initiative.
