Jessica Townsend and myself have been involved in a Leading School Improvement project to develop a whole school system for collecting and using data. On Tuesday Dr Judy Larsen a leading educationalist based in London who is tracking our project’s progress visited our school. She visited classrooms, looked at our school and talked with staff about the importance of tracking students using high quality data. REVIEW FEEDBACK As outlined in a previous newsletter we had our Peer Review on August 12th. The review panel suggested that for the next 4 years our school should continue to efficiently collect and analyse student data to inform teacher planning and track student learning; develop a whole school teaching and learning framework; differentiate the curriculum; involve students in goal setting; and encourage greater engagement of parents in student learning. The development of our next School Strategic Plan period should mark an exciting period for our school through a building redevelopment with state of the art facilities for teaching and learning. The final comment was “The school should embark on a journey aiming for continuous improvement and embedding the successful practices from the review period 2012- 2015.” NAPLAN The Year 3 and 5 students received their individual NAPLAN reports last week which gives a snapshot of their achievement. The school conducts ongoing assessment of each student’s progress throughout the year and NAPLAN is part of the whole school assessment program. The Year 3 trend over the past five years has shown a steady improvement in reading, grammar & punctuation and spelling, marked improvement in writing, with improvement required in numeracy. The Year 5 trend shows steady improvement in spelling, steady progress in reading and numeracy, marked improvement in writing and improvement required in grammar and punctuation. Teachers have worked with the educational consultant on reading and writing data gathering and analysis to inform their teaching and track student achievement levels. This year the emphasis has been on writing so it is confirming to see much improved results in NAPLAN writing. BOOK WEEK FUN What a fantastic week last week with Book Week. At Monday Assembly we started with the Book Week Parade featuring our favourite book character. The staff dressed up as Harry Potter characters with Mr Lewis (Harry Potter) and Mr Triplow (Professor Dumbledore) MC-ing the event. There are photos and recounts on the next page. On Tuesday we had the cross-age reading of a favourite book in the large gallery. It was abuzz with excited reading. Throughout the week we were treated to Book Fair and Clifford the big red dog visited each day. Thank you to all the staff who organised the activities. BOOK WEEK Here are some recounts about the Book Week Parade from 23A. We hope you enjoy them. The Parade - On Monday 24th August the whole school came to assembly. At assembly we had a parade for the people who dressed up, it was amazing, nearly everyone in the school was dressed up. I had so much fun. By Charntae The Book Parade - On Monday 24th August we had a parade. It was a book character parade and we were the 3rd last to go around. Alesia, Cohen and I went up to say who we were and Steven was cheering. Next we watched 1/2B go around, then the teachers went around. The parade went quickly and I think that Mrs Griffiths was the best, she was Sirius Black. She took a film at her house and brought her iPad and put wanted signs around it. The dress ups were great and there were kids who were the best and that was the girl as Franky Stine and me of course. She was so pretty like me. By Dakota The Book Character Parade - On the 24th August at our school everybody had to dress up as a character from a book. It was at assembly. First at assembly we just did what we did there, then we did the parade. Eventually it was 2/3A’s turn (our class), we were parading around, I dressed up as Endermane from Minecraft. Finally 1/2B walked around and that was the end of the parade. I enjoyed the parade and I had fun. By Harry The Book Parade - On the 24th August the whole school was wearing costumes. I was the only one that had a wolf costume. Firstly everyone was so pretty in their costumes, but Dakota was like the Fairy Godmother. Soon Dakota, Cohen and I went to say who we were and what book we were from. I loved it a lot. By Alesia REMINDER This is your very last opportunity for the year to put in your applications for the new “Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund” which need to be returned to the office by 18 September. If you hold a valid Centrelink Pensioner concession or Health Care Card, are a temporary foster parent or Veterans Affairs Pensioner, you may be eligible for CSEF. The allowance is $125 per primary school student paid directly to the school in term 3 each year. This allowance can be used towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. The allowance cannot be used towards school charges, books, stationery, school uniforms, music lessons, before/after school care etc. Application forms were sent home on the 27th May, if you have misplaced the form you can print another copy from the website www.seafordpark.vic.gov.au under the notices home tab or contact the office. LOST ITEMS BIN A small lime green bin has been placed near the popcorn table at the Grade 1/2 entrance for lost lunchboxes, lost clothing and other items. At the end of each term it will be emptied. BUSH WAHZEE

For all of our new parents in the school one of the highlights of the school year is the Bush Wahzee which is a show we do

over a whole day at school. The date for this show is Thursday November 5th. The theme for this year is ‘Country Music

Show’. May I suggest if you see a cowboy’s hat, buy it, as it will go very well with the theme. (I bought one last week for $3)

With the Bush Wahzee group, the children rehearse their items at school and the show is performed for parents usually

around 6.00p.m. A note containing all details of the show and costs will go out in early term 4. As this is part of our Arts

program all children are expected to participate in this activity. Read below and find out what we will be doing on the day.

The Country Music Show concentrates on the themes of country and city life and the differences between them. Felix

Meagher aka Flicker the City Slicker wants to leave the Bushwahzee band but the bus service to town no longer runs and

he ends up re-joining the band to help the kids put on a country music show. The kids and the audience are encouraged to

"Roll Up" and see an amazing show. The evening show features line dancing, the barn dance, The Stampede, Bus Stop, a

macarena type line dance called Flies On the Ringer and a variety of songs and dances from the country music scene

including Thank God I'm A Country Boy, The Country and Western Singer and Slim Dusty's "Good Old Country Style", and

"Duncan." Geoff Triplow.

I SEA I CARE The theme this term is Catchments. So, what is a catchment? It is the area of land, near a river, where the rain falls. The rain then feeds into the river through small streams, creeks, drains and down through the soil. These rivers flow either to the sea or to inland lakes and wetlands, such as Lake Eyre in the outback. Did you know that between 3000 and 1000 years ago, Port Phillip Bay was almost dry? The river Yarra ran through the middle and there was a small lake on the left. This happened because the amount of water evaporating off the bay was greater than the rain water flowing in. It took about 50 - 100 years to dry up and only a day or two to fill up again as a sand bank broke and the sea flooded back in. They also flow into man-made reservoirs, which store the water for us to use later on. After several years of mixed weather, our reservoirs are currently at approx. 70% of their full capacity. We all live in a catchment. Our catchment is Port Phillip. It provides the water that we drink, the oxygen that we breathe (from the plants that grow in it) and supports the lives of all the plants and animals in our area. Our food is grown in catchments and so it is really important that they are healthy. In the next assembly we will learn about the threats to our catchments and what we can do to protect them. Tarkyn and Emma COMMONWEALTH BANK SCHOOL BANKING UPDATE - RECALL PLEASE READ Concerns have been raised regarding the ‘Cosmic Light Beam Torch’ reward item due to the inclusion of four button batteries that can be accessed by unscrewing the back of the torch. Whilst this reward has been independently tested and deemed to meet relevant product standards the Commonwealth Bank have made the decision to proactively withdraw this item from the School Banking Rewards Program. Parents/Guardians are requested to dispose of any ‘Cosmic Light Beam Torches’ their child may have already received as part of the Rewards Program. Students who have previously received a ‘Cosmic Light Beam Torch’ are welcome to redeem an alternative reward item and will be automatically credited 10 tokens. The Commonwealth bank has sent out letters to those students who have received this award and their families to ensure that this update has been communicated to everyone. Commonwealth Bank School Banking Reminders Just some reminders please for school banking day which will help me process the banking: When completing the deposit slips, you only need to complete 5 fields: Student Name. Student # (not account number). Amount (on both deposit slip and deposit book tab which shows your records) Date. I process up to 100 deposits each week and although I love doing the banking for the children, it makes it a much longer task if people forget to complete deposit slips. Rewards – only the following items are currently available (at the time of writing this article): ET DVD, Glow in the Dark Solar System, Intergalactic Rocket, Invisible Ink Pens. There are also some 2014 items still available such as Dollarmites moneybox, Projector Cup, Scented pencils, Shark keyring and swim bag. If you want one of these items, put 10 tokens and a note into your child’s bankbook and I will process for you and they will receive it in approximately 2 weeks at assembly on Monday morning. I can only process one deposit each day so if your child has forgotten to hand in his bank book for two weeks with 2 x $1.00 deposits, I will only be able to process one deposit but for a total of $2.00. This will only impact you when competitions require a minimum number of deposits. We are unable to process any foreign currency. I always try and keep the display in the front foyer stocked with reward item forms, general information and my contact details – please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. If I don’t answer, please leave a message as I work as well so I may have to ring you back a little later. Thanks and Happy Banking! Bec Atkins - School Banking Coordinator 0416 948 232 KEEPING KIDS SAFE & RESPONSIBLE ONLINE Mrs Younger and Mrs Griffiths Continuing with our excerpts from Martine Oglethorpe’s article, titled Keeping Kids Safe & Responsible Online, here is our next installment. When we look at protecting the devices themselves that are within our homes, as well as the content that they allow, there are a few different ways we should be doing this: Wi-fi: There are now modems that come with built in filters and parental controls that can be controlled by a parent (admin) to determine what sites are available on whatever devices are logging in to that wi-fi. Certain profiles can even be created to make different sites available for different users and there is even the capability to determine how long and at what times of the day certain sites or apps can be used. For more information on online safety for your family, you can purchase Martine’s eBook – Parenting in a Digital World: Stop fighting, Start connecting. - See more at: http://childhood101.com/2015/07/keeping-kids-safe-responsible-online/#sthash.x1ElIQUq.dpuf MORE BOOK WEEK PARADE PHOTOS
