Dear All, That India is sover- eign and an inde- pendent nation is a fact and each year we celebrate the mo- mentous occasion with pride and en- thusiasm. But we should not be pre- sumptuous and take our Independence for granted. Remember we had to earn our freedom and even today we are not free from all threats. We are and will continue to fight against forces that envy our independ- ent status. We must thank those brave soldiers who guard our borders. We must reflect on those brave men who have sacrificed their lives so that we continue to breathe the air of a free Independent nation. Remember we also have our part to play in preserving our sov- ereignty. The danger within is no less than across the borders. There is considerable poverty. And poverty creates its own form of turbulence. We all want peaceful India. My advice to you all will be to look ahead. Be optimistic. The path is in front of you and you can see very clearly just as you can see the obstacles on the road ahead from the windshield of your car. But keep an eye on the rear view mirror so that you can guard against evil designs. I wish you all a Happy Independence Day. May all our dreams come true, now and always! Jai Hind! Dear All,

That India is sover-eign and an inde-pendent nation is a fact and each year we celebrate the mo-mentous occasion with pride and en-thusiasm. But we should not be pre-sumptuous and take our Independence for granted.

Remember we had to earn our freedom and even today we are not free from all threats. We are and will continue to fight against forces that envy our independ-ent status. We must

thank those brave soldiers who guard our borders. We must reflect on those brave men who have sacrificed their lives so that we continue to breathe the air of a free Independent nation.

Remember we also have our part to play in preserving our sov-ereignty. The danger within is no less than across the borders. There is considerable poverty. And poverty creates its own form of turbulence. We all want peaceful India.

My advice to you all

will be to look ahead.

ANNUAL INTER-HOUSE ELOCUTION COMPETITION (SECONDARY ) –2014

The Annual English Elocution Competition, 2014 (Secondary Section) had Patriotism as its theme.

As Herbert Clark Hoover, the 31st President of the United States (1929–1933), a mining engineer and author said,

“My country owes me nothing. It gave me, as it gives every boy and girl, a chance. It gave me schooling, independence

of action, opportunity for service and honor.”Going by that the four Houses, the Achiever, the Creator, the Philoso-

pher and the Innovator battled out for Individual applause as well as House points.

Held in the school auditorium, the chief guest for the programme was Mrs Lorraine Mirza, the Principal of La Marti-

niere for Girls. The in- house judges panel comprised of Mrs Sahana Bhattacharya(Primary Head), Mrs Mahua Law-

rence and Mrs SudhaVolz .

There were three categories. In Category A Class VI and VII had to recite patriotic poems whereas in Category B ,

Class VIII were given National Speech as their topic. Category C had Class IX competing in International Speech.

The participants were judged under four categories-voice, articulation, content and expression.

The Philosopher House was declared the winner with the best speaker‟s certificate going to AranyaSen of Class

VII.The runner –up was the Innovator House.

The Chief-guest Mrs Lorraine Mirza appreciated the talent of the students and SCIS for encouraging the literary and

oratory growth in them.

BICHITRA PATHSALA– a peek into the bygone era.

The exhibition ,“Bichitra Pathshala” ,at South City International School tried to capture the various

ways in which the lives of the common Indians during the colonial times were touched deeply by the

western culture. Almost every household has a tale to tell, artifacts which whisper the history of the

bygone era. We had tried to showcase the different articles found across diverse community house-

holds which were influenced by the British culture. It is also interesting to note that India has always

been able to retain its diverse and distinct cultural patterns and weave foreign influences into it,

which results in a unique culture of its own.

The platform of “Bichitra Pathshala-A living memory”, has helped us to showcase the human history

which students are hardly able to glimpse in their History text books. It has been an enriching jour-

ney and an interesting learning program for our students and teachers, who came to understand their

cultural roots in a better way through this process.

The various artifacts on display, gives a glimpse of the lives of the common Indian, who lived about

100 years ago, whose „living memories „ take you back to the days of the British Raj.

Model United Nations, popularly referred to as MUN,, is an academic simulation in which students take up the role of

international diplomats, and representatives of countries in various UN bodies including UNICEF, UNESCO,WHO,

WTO,UN Security Council among others.. MUN involves and teaches research, public speaking, debating and writing

skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork and leadership abilities.

The MUN Club of SCIS had an opportunity to visit the MUN Conference in China under the able guidance and assistance

of our Principal, Mr. John Bagul. It was a wonderful experience for the youngsters .It was a first time interaction with the

diverse MUN delegates which enriched each one present there.

Right now we are looking forward to the IIMUN Conference which will be held in our school premises.

STUDENT SPEAK

My trip to China was a great learning experience for me. I met new people from all over the world and had a great time interacting with them. I experienced the ancient culture of China.

The first three days were reserved for sight-seeing. We went to a number of tourist attractions in

Beijing like the jade factory, The Forbidden City, the Tiananmen Square, the Silk Market (where we had to prove our bargaining skills), the Birds’ Nest (where the 2008 Olympics was held )and we also saw one of the most breathtaking acrobatic show. Other than seeing the ancient culture of China, we also tasted its cuisine. It was a challenge to eat authentic Chinese food with chopsticks in which I had accomplished.

The next three days got us busy with our conference. We had to pull up our socks and concentrate. We had six sessions each of them with a duration of three hours. These three days were very fruitful as I learnt a lot over this time period. I developed my speaking skills, creativity and my personality.

We were not students but diplomats discussing serious issues. Meeting people from all over the world and getting to know their views on how to solve a problem and drafting out a solution paper was a chal-lenge for all of us. We also had a great time in the delegate gala and the global village.

Communicating with people was a problem in China, as only few of them knew how to speak in English but we managed to overcome this problem eventually. It was icing on the cake when I won best posi-tion paper. Lastly, I would like to thank my Principal and parents who made this trip possible for me.

CELEBRATING INDEPENDENCE DAY

South City International School celebrated the occasion of Independence Day with a gala presentation which included

recitations of poems and speech in English and in vernacular languages, namely Hindi and Bengali. The Performing Arts

department was instrumental in presenting a show which showcased the idea of „ Unity in Diversity‟.

The Junior choir sang „Chol chol Chol’ and „Nanna Munna Rahi Hu‟with great patriotic zeal. This was followed by the

Middle School Choir who sang „Vande Mataram’ in harmony and in Accapella. The arrangement of this particular piece

was written specifically for this occasion by the Music teachers of the Performing Arts Department. Besides Vande Mata-

ram , the Middle School Choir also sang the adapted version of‟Ekla Cholo re’.

On this occasion the Primary Section also held an ‟Inter house Dance Competition‟ wherein each house had to perform a

regional dance form from different parts of India, thus reflecting the vibrancy of culture and mood. Philosopher House

stood first .

The students of the Secondary Section performed a dance routine to „Kandhey se Kandhey‟which was once again per-

formed at la Martiniere for Boys.

BOOK RELEASE

Chander Pahar is a Bengali novel written by Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay in the year 1937. It is con-sidered to be one of the most loved adventure novels in the Bengali literature and one of Bibhutib-hushan's most popular works. This book chronicles the adventures of Shankar . Although Bhibhutib-hushan had never travelled outside India, yet he has given a lucid and magnificent description of the jungles and deserts of Kalahari.

This book has gained immense popularity and became a favourite book for our three students ,Arko

Dutta, Aritro Dutta , Shameek Paul. They decided to translate it into English so that more children could savour the book. It took them three years to accomplish what they had set out to do.

Almost two years ago , when my young translators were in the 7th grade, they began their expedi-

tion. Over these years, in between academic responsibilities and other activities of student life,

they have worked their way through removing each hurdle patiently. Today, the hard work that

they have put in is getting recognition. It is inexplicable how joyous it is.

This entire journey, the complete endeavour has been made possible owing to our Respected Prin-

cipal ,Mr. John Andrew Bagul . He had been very motivating . The immense belief and faith he

had in his young students helped them to achieve the milestone.. His significance in this endeav-

our is undeniable . I express my unabashed gratitude towards him. I also convey my sincere

gratitude to Chandana whose co-operation and initiative has helped the dream to take the form

of a book.– Mrs. Basabdatta Ghosh Mukherjee (Mentor)

Principals' Meet at the residence of Consul General of the United States of America.

Distinguished Principals of reputed schools in Kolkata met at the Consul General of The United

States of America‘s residence on August 20th, 2014. The interaction with the US consul-general ,

Ms. Helen LaFave, ranged on a number of issues regarding students’ discipline, helicopter-

parenting and syllabus. A common thread which all the stalwarts agreed to was that the parents

today are reluctant to take any disciplinary actions against their wards. All felt that it was easy to

handle a child than their parents. Ms Helen LaFave expressed her desire to visit South City In-

ternational School to interact with senior students in order to motivate them for higher studies in

the U.S.
