Wonder in Aliceland Production rehearsals are in full swing with music emanating from all classrooms throughout the school. Mrs Sarah Butler, our Music Teacher, is doing a marvellous job teaching the children their musical numbers and I know all the classroom teachers are enjoying singing and dancing with the children. There are still concert tickets available so you may secure tickets to bring your extended family and friends. If you have not already ordered tickets, please contact the office for forms. Tickets will be going out with the children next Tuesday 21

st August, so check those school bags!

Production is a really important time for children in the school. This is a time where children have the opportunity to be up on stage enjoying performing in front of their families. Leading up to the production there is a lot of teamwork going on as they learn their dances, songs and acting lines. Please do come along and support your children in this event and I am sure you will have a wonderful time as you watch your child and how they proud they are up on stage.

INDIA Next Thursday myself, Anita Elliott and Ray Brookman will be flying to India. Richard Lambert will be taking over for two weeks until I return on Thursday 6

th September.

As I have mentioned before, I am lamenting that I won’t be here for our wonderful production, however, I am looking forward to returning and sharing our knowledge about India. I know you will all enjoy the production immensely and I will be thinking about all the children over those two nights. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL

Our Phillip Island camp is fast approaching and final payment is required by Thursday 23

rd August. Unfortunately,

we are not able to accept any payments after this as Phillip Island Adventure Resort requires definite numbers by Friday 24th August. If there is an outstanding amount to be paid, your child will be bringing home a notice with final payment details by the end of this week. Please check your child’s bag. Junior School Council Committee

WORKING BEE - Sunday, 12thAugust Thank goodness the weather held off again for another working bee. Thank you to the Batrouney, Love, McCarten, Goodwin, and Landi families, with their mini-helpers Jarrah, Sienna, Haylee, Kane, Justin and Nathan. The garden beds were mulched, playgrounds raked, rubbish picked up, and the mammoth job of resurfacing the gravel part of the staff car park. A special thank you to Tony C.,Tony L., Andrew, Ted and Bryan for spreading 15m of gravel! Just a reminder with this, parents are asked NOT to drop off or pick up their child/ren in the staff car park, unless they have a permit from the office. This is of course to ensure everyone’s safety. If you have missed a working bee, you can volunteer on either the: 14

10th November. As you know, we really rely on your help and it makes it so much easier

when we have many hands to make light work! Many thanks to the incredible Bryan and Ted who are tireless in keeping our school grounds in shape. They really need and appreciate your help. Remember there’s a BBQ lunch afterwards to warm you up and your children love being at school on a weekend, seeing other students here too.

Production is a great opportunity to show Grandmas,

Grandpas, aunties, uncles, cousins and friends what

you have been doing at school this term. Invite them

along to show off all you hard work and talent.

Do you have a friend performing on a different night to

you? Do you want to see how the scene you are in fits in

to the whole show? Why not get a ticket for the night you

are not performing?

Costume Checks

Costume checks for students from Prep – 6 (except lead characters) happened this week. If you were absent on Monday, or if you did not have your costume at that time please bring it in ASAP and show it to your classroom teacher. Last term a notice went home informing families what item they would need to provide. If you have lost this notice or you are unsure what items you need there are spare copies of this notice at the main office. If you are having trouble sourcing items for your costume I recommend you contact someone from your child’s class who is performing on the opposite night to your child and organise to share the same items.

Hairdressers Wanted

The Production Team is looking for helpers to do hair on the nights of production. You do not need to be a professional hairdresser or have had any experience with hair dressing. If you can style hair, braid hair or do basic pigtails and you

would be able to help out on the Monday or Tuesday night please contact Mrs Sarah Butler at butler.sarah.a@edumail.vic.gov.au or by calling the school on 9876 3289.

Production Notices There will be a number of notices coming home regarding our Wonder in Aliceland Production. Please keep all of your notices together as they contain important information about costume requirements, dates, times, etc. All Production Notices will be printed on bright blue paper from now on.

Photography and DVD at the Production As mentioned on the Ticket Order Form sent home previously, any form of photography or video of the production is not permitted. DVDs and photos of the production will be available after the event. Order/payment envelopes for the DVDs will be sent home next week. Photo order forms will be displayed with the photos after the concert. Parents please note that a professional video and photography of the production is being done over the two nights. Environmental Science – Level 2 & Lemon Cordial Today in Science we made Cherub Juice! We all helped Mrs French. I reamed some juice out of the lemons. I thought it was the best cordial I had ever had. I had two cups of it because I loved the taste. I told my Mum and even she thought it sounded delicious. Charlotte L 1/2C We reamed the lemons. It was surprising fun. Then we tasted it. It was delicious and I wanted seconds. It was fantabulous. Harper 1/2E We made lemon cordial and it tasted good. I am going to give it 10/10. It was tangy and it was excellent. Eric 1/2M I loved watching Mrs French making lemon cordial. I even got to squeeze a lemon. It was fantabulous, boy that was yum! Before we made it we had to wash our hands. One day at home I want to make lemon cordial. Matilda 1/2D In Science this week we made marvellous lemon cordial. It was absolutely fantastic. I thought there was only one type of lemon but there are lots of different types. Brylie 1/2E Oh, I can't really tell you all about it. I wish the world was made out of it! It was delicious. I even helped squeeze the lemons. It was a team effort. Charles 1/2C I loved it. It was so yummy and soooooo delicious. William W 1/2D It was the BEST thing in the world. When we first made it I squeezed the lemon juice out. I could even make it at my house! Vikatoa 1/2D Today was the best day of my life. Thank you, thank you so much. I love what we do in Science. It was the BEST DAY EVER!!! Jack 1/2C It was the best thing that I ever tasted. It was sugary. It was tangy. Ethan W. 1/2M It was a miracle making Mrs French's lemon cordial. I reamed out the lemon juice. I thought it was sour, sweet, fantastic and the best one ever. Hayden said it was bitter. Will V 1/2D Cherub Juice. It was wonderful. I could feel the sweet lemon cordial going down my throat. Charlotte and I both had a second cup. Everyone helped. Lucy 1/2C The lemon cordial was delightful. The lemons were Meyer lemons. It was delightful. We drank the cordial. I loved the cordial. Ryan H. 1/2E Today was the best day of my life. We drank lemon cordial. It tasted good. Kayla 1/2C We made lemon cordial with Mrs French. The whole grade helped. We got to taste it too and after we tasted it Josh and I got to wash up the equipment. Hayden 1/2D

2012 WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN Thank you to all children and their families who supported Kalinda Primary School by shopping at Woolworths. The Program has now closed for 2012 and our final tally has been entered. Over 18,000 stickers and 600 sheets were returned!! Keep an eye out for the next story when we show what we have purchased!

COLES VOUCHERS Coles Vouchers have also come to an end. If you have any floating around at home, please send in before Monday 20

th August. Stay tuned for a final tally later in the year. Thanks again to all families who have supported this

JAPANESE NEWS On Monday 20

th August, Level 3 is going to make Sushi during their Japanese lesson. The ingredients being used are

as follows: Rice Cucumber Carrot Avocado If there is an issue or concern regarding these ingredients, could you please let your child’s teacher know or leave a note for Ms Mamiko Ito (replacement LOTE teacher for Hiromi).

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR 2012 We are very fortunate to have an Intern arriving in late September to stay with our Kalinda families for 6 months. Her name is Mayumi Okazaki. She is a primary school teacher in Japan and, at present, is teaching in Port Macquarie, NSW. When Mayumi is here she will be teaching our Preps and Level 2 students. Mayumi would like to teach our students about Japanese cuisine, origami, Japanese poetry and traditional children’s games. We ask host families to provide a room and food for an intern. It is an intern’s responsibility to organize holidays. Host families like to share their weekends with the intern though. The intern pays a small weekly fee to the host family to help cover the cost to stay. Usually the children get exposed to Japanese culture and make a good lasting friendship. Previous interns still keep in touch with their host families. RECIPE OF THE WEEK!

Foolproof dessert recipe!!!

Serves: 4-6 people

Peach Surprise

What you need: 1 packet vanilla cake mix 1 large tin sliced peaches (reserve juice) Cinnamon sugar

1. Preheat oven and prepare cake mix according to packet directions. Pour mixture into a lightly greased 2 litre casserole dish. Arrange the peach slices evenly over the mix. Peaches will sink into the mix while cooking.

2. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of the reserved juice and then dust evenly with cinnamon sugar.

3. Bake in oven according to packet mix directions. Serve hot or cold with cream, ice-cream or custard.

A team of researchers (the BRAVE Team) at Griffith University and the University of Queensland is investigating internet-based programs for children suffering from social anxiety. Social Anxiety is extreme shyness, or fear of speaking or performing in front of others. The BRAVE Team is seeking children aged between 8 and 12 years to take part in an internet-based treatment study. The treatment program involves 12 online sessions for children and 8 online sessions for parents, which each session taking approximately an hour to complete. Families are charged a one-off fee of $120 to assist in

covering treatment costs. Families will also be asked to complete questionnaires and telephone interviews, but will receive a rebate of $25 in vouchers each time they complete a post-treatment assessment.
