There is a lot of educational research to show that parents play a vital role in the success of their child in education. SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS

Flash Mentoring- Flinders University and TheSmith Family visit Paralowie Year 11s

Flash mentoring is like speed dating. Flinders University andThe Smith Family once again have provided this experience forall of our year 11 students. On Monday of Week 2 we hadmentors moving between small groups of Year 11 students inthe senior School. Our students had the opportunity to meetyoung people studying at Flinders University and a variety ofmentors of different ages who are already in the work force. These visitors moved between small groups of students toshare their experiences about going to university and the manyways in which you can now enter university, or the world ofwork.

Stories from the work industry volunteers included a personwho lost their job at Holden’s but has since retrained andis working in a new industry. We also learnt about theopportunities in accounting and how as an adult you can keeplearning in order to diversify your career pathways. Year 11students found this a quick way to learn about these stories andthe opportunities that await them once they leave school.

English Goes To Tech

By YEAR 10 ENGLISH IN THE COMMUNITY CLASS

At the end of Term 2, Miss Holmes’ Year 10 English in theCommunity class began learning about procedures.Procedures are real life texts that people use every day withoutrealising, that show us how to do or make something.

As a class, we spent several weeks analysing procedures textsand how they are constructed. At the end of Term 2, we spenta week of our English lessons over in Tech Studies with Mr.Wild, building our very own desk lamps. The idea was that wehad to follow the process so that we could then write our ownprocedure about how to make a wooden desk lamp.

We really enjoyed being able to engage with hands on learningand create an awesome product at the end. We were the bestbehaved we have ever been!

This term we brought our lamps to our English class, wherewe focussed on tech specific vocabulary and the structure

of a procedure, in order to write our very own. We workedcollaboratively to share ideas and check one another’s work.

We enjoyed this task because we were not only able to getout of our English class and connect what we were learning toanother subject, but we also got to look at how we will needEnglish when we leave school.

We want to say a big thank you to Mr. Wild for not onlysupervising us in tech (because Miss Holmes is no tech expert),but also for giving up his own time to help us in our learning. Weowe you a big thank you!

PROTECTING YOUR CHILD ONLINE.For most of us, the Internet is part of our daily routine forkeeping in touch with family and friends.

While it offers many benefits, there are also a range of safetyand security risks associated with internet use. Being aware ofthe risks helps you make informed choices about its use.

Facebook users must be 13 years and older.Instagram users must be 13 years and older.Snapchat users must be 13 years and older.

Nine tips to staying safe

When an application is used incorrectly, it has the potential tocause harm. It is important that you openly communicate withyour child about how they are using an app and the legal andethical ramifications of inappropriate use. They also need tobe aware of the dangers of communicating with people theydon’t know.

Another important fact to note is that evening screen timegreatly affects sleep. Using devices before bedtime may causegrogginess in the morning.

Mobile phones, computers and TVs emit blue light. Studieshave shown that exposure to that bluish light during the twohours before bed can keep us from getting a good night'srest. Therefore, it’s important to ensure that your child’sdevices are securely turned off and out of reach, well beforebedtime.
