Call to Arms - ACS LEOs I have met with representatives of the Ashford Lions Club very recently to discuss ways in which ‘Community Service’ can be facilitated with our students from 12 to 18 years old. The consensus of the meeting was that the school will embed the work we have commenced in our Flexi Future Focused Learning (FFFL) sessions to be linked with the great work of the Lions organisation. There are a variety of activities that we can consider to support our local community including: Gardening Small engines: (mower, whipper snipper) round up and repair sessions with local volunteers to
then move out into community doing lawns and gardens for those not able to or out of kindness.
Storytime: students go out and read to the elderly or in need in our community over a cup of tea and a chat go out or host in.
Crochet/knitting club: go out or host in: link to older or interested community members Fence building: timber or brick minor projects to boost student access to trade related
projects. Main street work: discuss progress on the main street with the Ashford Business Council. Who are LEOs? Leos are young people who want to make a difference. Aged between 12 and 30 years, Leos are the youngest members of Lions Clubs International.
They get together to deliver projects that will help to make the world a better place.
If you are interested in working with the LEOs outside of school, please contact the school and we will put you in touch with a Lions representative. The following link is to the Lions website for more information about the LEOs: https://lionsclubs.org.au/activities/youth/leos/ School Planning 2021-2024 Final Consultation: The school and community have effectively collaborated to produce a student-centred, academically focused school plan for the next four years. The final draft of the 2021-2024 ACS school plan is provided (following) and has been endorsed by the Staff, P&C and the Ashford AECG. This final consultation with all key stakeholders will conclude at Friday 26th of March. I will then publish the document.
LEOS serve their communities LEOS gain experience LEOS learn new skills LEOS have fun
LEOS make friends LEOS develop teams LEOS become leaders LEOS seize opportunities LEOS build a better future

School vision statement
Ashford Central School is committed to ensuring that all
students, teachers and leaders improve every year in an
educational environment where students, staff, parents
and community members are known, valued and cared
for. Our school stakeholders are mutually accountable to
achieving this vision and positively collaborate in school
engagement, decision-making and supporting the school
vision and plan.
School Context
Ashford Central School is a K-12 school, located in the
small rural community of Ashford which has a
population of 570. Students of Ashford Central School
are drawn from the township of Ashford and
surrounding district. Some of the students travel a
considerable distance to school by bus. Ashford is 57km
north of Inverell and 40km south of the Queensland
border. The total enrolment of Ashford Central School in
2021 is around 140 students. With approximately half in
each the primary and secondary departments.
The school context has shifted over the past 5 years due
to drought and an increased transient population. 40%
of our students identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait
Islander. Our families can live up to 35km from our
school and travel long distances during the week for
school, sport and other activities.
As a result of a situational analysis into our changing
school context, the school has identified the following
key areas for development:
1. Student Growth and Attainment in Reading and
Numeracy
2. Teacher Collaboration and Systematic Lesson
Delivery
3. Aboriginal Education
4. Building High Expectations and Aspirations
5. Student and Staff Wellbeing

on teaching effectiveness and
inform future school directions.

Strategic Direction 3: Wellbeing: Connect, Succeed and Thrive
Parents and students are advised that the school has bolstered its processes for tracking and following up on student attendance. The
work that has been undertaken to increase student attendance can be confronting at times but is essential. The current attendance rate of
the school is not at the state average and a key focus of our school plan. The school has taken as many positive measures as possible to
increase this rate including providing a free canteen voucher on Fridays. An example of some increased processes include:
The Principal personally receives a daily summary of every student that is late or absent each and every day.
If a student is not at school more than 85% of the time, a letter is generated.
If this attendance continues to be of concerns and not addressed, a second letter is sent home.
A 20-day individual tracking sheet is commenced by the Principal to monitor targeted students (this varies according to whether the
student is in Yr11 or 12).
Students and parents are contacted and plans are put in place, a Home School Liaison Officer is included in meetings
Finally, if attendance is continuing to track downwards, the Principal will contact and make a Child Wellbeing Report for Educational
Neglect – Habitual Absence.
Every Day Counts!
Contacting the school:
Please remember that if, for any reason, you need to contact the school, that our friendly office staff can assist you on 67254101. Any
concerns or questions around classroom activities or students should be directed to the classroom teacher in the first instance. Our
leadership team is more than happy to support your enquiry if you are unable to have this matter resolved with the teacher.
The school will continue to push through information and updates via the school Facebook page!

Rural Learning Exchange (RLE)
One of Ashford Central School's exciting initiatives this year is the Rural Learning Exchange (RLE), a newly-developed initiative aiming to network rural and remote schools together, providing access to quality curriculum programs. This highly-engaging and future focused program allows senior students and their teachers to collaborate with other experienced, quality teachers from all corners of the state. This year, senior Standard English and Mathematics students, as well as our wonderful teachers, Mr Kolarik and Ms Burton, are lucky enough to be a part of this exciting program! Facilitated and delivered by Julie Roberts, Kathy Howard, Katrina Shannon, Sharon Evans, and Helen Spencer, the RLE allows students to optimise their Stage 6 work, to share ideas with students across the state, and gain new insights and perspectives. The RLE program also provides frequent, highly-rewarding and beneficial professional learning opportunities for our English and Mathematics teachers to ensure our senior students are receiving the best, quality education possible. Students are able to interact using smart technologies, webcams and microphones, and real-life synchronous learning applications offered by the Department of Education. These sessions are recorded for students to revise, catch-up on work, or class-discussion as students get closer to their HSC Exams. These photos from our RLE teachers show these classes 'in action', as Julie Roberts provides real-time synchronous lessons to multiple schools over 1,000km apart! Thank you, Mr Kolarik and Ms Burton, for working with the Rural Learning Exchange in your deliverance of an exciting, quality, and technologically advanced curriculum delivery.

GRIP Leadership
Wednesday 10th March saw STUDEC
Representatives from Ashford Central
School visit a GRIP Leadership course at
Tamworth Town Hall.
Students attended various workshops on
developing leadership qualities that
begin in school and carry on in their post
school life.
It was a very rewarding and enjoyable
day and students were able to liaise with
students from other school to discuss
their ideas.
