FROM THE PRINCIPAL Students at Ogilvie aspire to achieve and last week many of our past students received awards at the Elizabeth College Prize Night. Ms Boas repre- sented the School and was most impressed to wit- ness the recognition of so many successes of our past students as they continue their education in Years 11 and 12. Many of our students received subject prizes, and were among those who re- ceived high tertiary entrance scores. We are very proud of your achievements and congratulate all of you. In particular I would like to congratulate Anni Zhang who received the Year 12 Dux Gold Medal Award. Anni’s Tertiary Entrance Score was 121.1 (ATAR 99.95). Anni also received a number of oth- er awards on the night. Amongst many other Ogilvie awardees I would like to also congratulate Elise Cook and Alice Curtain who received the College Silver Medal for Academic Excellence, with an ATAR ranking over 96, and Isabel Dunn and Amelia Maxwell who received an Academic Achievement Certificate with an ATAR between 94 and 96. We wish past students all the very best as they begin their pursuit of University degrees this year, we hope to hear about their future successes. We welcome contact from any past students who would like to share their journey and successes, particularly in furthering education, so that we can share this with our School community. It is an important time to reflect on learning and act on feedback given by teachers. I hope that there is reason to feel proud of achievements this term, and if there are disap- pointments or setbacks, to think about areas that could be improved upon in Term Two. Teachers believe in the capacity of eve- ry student to achieve, and they will build on the foundations set in Term One to challenge each student to achieve their best. The basis for this for students is to have a growth mindset and to learn from mistakes in order to improve. I invite all parents to the Cybersafety session being held at the School in the Hall in M Block on Wednesday 11 April following Parent/Teacher interviews, from 6.30-7.30 pm. This is an opportunity to become informed and to learn some strategies that you can use to protect and educate your children about being safe online. Another opportunity for parents next term, through the Alliance of Girls’ Schools, is a presentation from Peggy Orenstein on Monday 14 May at 6.00pm, to be held at Collegiate. Peggy is the writer of New York Times bestsellers Girls and Sex, Cinderella Ate My Daughter, Waiting for Daisy, Flux, and Schoolgirls. She is also an active journalist for the New York Times magazine, USA Today, Parenting, Salon, the New and oth- er publications. Peggy will be presenting on the topic From Princesses to Pop-Tarts: What the New Culture of Girlhood Means for Girls and the Grown-Ups Who Care About Them. I wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday period. A number of our students and staff will participate in the ANZAC Day service at Lenah Valley RSL on Wednesday 25 April and I invite others to join in this event. We farewell Mr David Richardson at the end of the term and thank him for his outstanding contribution to Ogilvie and to education in the pub- lic system in Tasmania over many years. Mr Richardson will be enjoying a period of Long Service Leave before officially retiring later in the year. Julie Bird - PRINCIPAL

Reminder - OHS School Association AGM

Annual General Meeting of the Ogilvie High School

Association is to be held on Tuesday 10 April at 5.00pm in

the Boardroom at Ogilvie High School.

Student Achievement

Isabel competed at the State Long Course Swimming

Championships which were held from 9 to 12 March.

There were 500 competitors from around Tasmania and

Mainland states. Isabel competed in 4 events making it into

the A final. For all events she received bronze medals for

the 200 Breaststroke and the 100 Breaststroke and came

fourth in the 200 Freestyle and fifth in the 100 Freestyle

finals.

Surfing Championships

On Monday 19 March Aimee, Jenna, Lucy, Rebecca,

Phoebe and Natalie travelled to Clifton Beach to compete

in the Tasmanian School Surfing Championships. There

were some great waves surfed throughout the day and all

the girls should be proud of their efforts. Natalie and

Phoebe surfed extremely well in their heats both making it

through to the final. Natalie caught the two best waves in

her final winning the U/16 Girls Division Two shortboard

in a tremendous effort. Phoebe saved her best wave in the

same final to the last minute to take out third position.

Rebecca surfed well in the Learner Board Division only

narrowly missing out on first position in the final. Well

done to all the girls.

Humanities

Home Groups 7A and 7B have completed a Humanities

unit based around the question, ‘What is the difference

between a country and a continent?’ Students composed a

narrative about a character who travels to different

continents and countries.

Working with Vulnerable People Card

A reminder that the WWVP

card is required if you are

assisting at the school for any

reason. The cost of the card is

to be paid by the individual.

Payment of School Levies

A friendly reminder that levies

should now be paid unless you

have made a payment

arrangement with the school

office.

Croquet Visit

As part of the 9/10 HPE program we investigate different

types of recreational activities and establish links with our

local community. A Year 10 HPE class went to visit the

New Town Croquet Club and were guided through the

basics by club members Gaylene, Elisabeth, Alan, Leigh,

Henry and Phil. Some of the girls were a bit hesitant at

first but they put into practise some of our learning

around

Positive Psychology and strategies to get out of their

comfort zones.

Soon everyone was laughing, hitting, scoring “hoops” and

having a good time. A few got quite competitive and are

now keen to join up.

We wish to thank the New Town Croquet Club for

letting us use their facilities and for those members who

kindly donated their time to help us. We would love to

come back.

If you are interested in having a go on a weekend they play

from 1.00pm on a Saturday. Please contact the club for

more details.

Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education students started the year learning to

surf at Clifton Beach with some excellent instructors from

Coastrider Surf Academy. Students learnt and reflected on

the key points about standing up on their boards and the

importance of staying safe in the open water. Both classes

have just returned from their respective camps on the

Tasman Peninsula where they spent two nights camping at

Fortescue Bay. Students had the opportunity to experi-

ence bushwalks to Cape Hauy, Shipstern Bluff and Cres-

cent Beach. They were able to show off their surfing skills

at Eaglehawk Neck and also participate in snorkelling and

fishing activities. All students have been developing a port-

folio of their experiences and will continue to add reflec-

tions and photographs throughout the year. During Term

Two, students will have the opportunity to participate in

orienteering and mountain bike riding.

Learning Centre News

The senior girls recently visited New Town Station

Nursery. They met Bec who chatted to the girls about

gardening and potting up seedlings. The girls potted up

lettuce and pea seedlings and brought them back to school

to plant in their Learning Centre vegetable garden. While

at the nursery, the girls also enjoyed having a drink at

Tracks Café.

We thank Bec and Ange for a most enjoyable visit.
