Preparing for our stunning OPEN NIGHT will be the primary aim. Painting and freshening up and maybe a little gardening will be the focus. If you have the time to spare, we would love you to come! Bring your children! Make it a family event! Drinks and stunning snacks provided at half time!If you can come, we would love you to register your availability to participate by notifying the front office either via email or phone by March 10. What fun and cheer was had by all! Visiting Kalinda Primary School and Warranwood Primary SchoolOn Tuesday February 27, a wonderful group from Warrandyte High School

visited Kalinda Primary School and another awesome group visited Warranwood Primary School on Wednesday February 28. At both schools we spoke to the Grade 5 and 6 students and teachers about the wonderful opportunities that exist right here at Warrandyte High School. We were very warmly received by both amazing primary schools and we would like to take this opportunity to once again express our thanks to both primary schools for having us. Who presented at Kalinda Primary School? Myself and 4 of our amazing students who are all former Kalinda Primary School students presented.I would like to take this opportunity to officially acknowledge the wonderful job Camryn Barnes, Annabelle Barrow, Thomas McLellan and Jackson Murray did at Kalinda Primary School. They spoke with elegance and flair and certainly represented Warrandyte High School wonderfully.Who presented at Warranwood Primary School in addition to Leigh Thomson and myself I hear you asking? The following 4 former students of Warranwood Primary School addressed the audience of Grade 5 and 6 students and teachers: Kenna Khaw, Orlando Martini, Ben Metcalf and India Robinson. As with the first group of students, these current Warrandyte High School students and former Warranwood PS students did us proud. What wonderful ambassadors for Warrandyte High School all of these students were! Many thanks indeed! Many more Primary School visits coming – including Wonga Park PS, Kangaroo Ground PS, Anderson’s Creek PS, Warrandyte PS and Panton Hill PS!Never a dull moment at Warrandyte High School!

Having fun in VCE Chemistry!Students became electrostatically attracted to their  learning this week with a game called ‘element speed dating’. Half the students were given a positively charged  ion while the other half were given a negatively charged ion. With only two minutes to bond to their partner they had to determine the formula and name of the ionic compound they would make when paired and draw a diagram of how their electrons were taken not shared between atoms.

Careers – Work ExperienceJust a reminder to ALL Year 10 students and

their parents. Work Experience is the last week of Semester 2

ie Monday June 25th to Friday June 29th. Work experience is considered an important

part of the Year 10 curriculum. Students should be actively looking for a placement, if they have

not already got something lined up. Recently I distributed the required form to Year 10’s during

Step Up, so anyone that missed out should come and see me to get a form.

During Step Up we will look at things like preparing a resume and Letter of Application.Students should try and find a placement is an area of future career interest, but if this is not possible, any real work experience is valuable. It looks good on your Resume and you might even get a part time job out of it.Obviously the best place to start is to ask around family, friends, neighbours or businesses you have contact with. If any parents have suggested sources for Work Experience, please pass them onto me, so I can follow up and help every student get a placement.Students wanting help with Work Experience should come in and see me in the Careers office, just inside the library. Or email me at [email protected]!

House Swimming SportsTuesday 20 February saw 350 Warrandyte High School students and teachers dressed in house colours and cheering loudly descend on Booroondara Sports Complex. It was a fantastic day with lots of students full of loud voices ready to swim and cheer their houses to victory. The weather was super kind providing us with perfect conditions for all events, cheering and some relaxing around the pool. It was great to see students giving it a go whether competing competitively or simply for the fun and in the spirit of gaining house points. A highlight for many of the students was the annual bombing contest from the 3m diving board which provided spectators with a wonderful display of different bombing techniques. You could hear the splash and the agony of some of the impact from the other end of the pool. The noodle race was also highly popular with students and earned house valuable points. In the end Stiggant were awarded Swimming House Champions for 2018 (2nd year in a row). Congratulations Stiggant. The final points tally was:Stiggant – 333 Michel – 299Newman - 293Anderson – 251In addition a House Swimming Champion Trophy was awarded to one student from each house. These students were recognized for gaining the most number of points for their house and for their eager participation on the day.The House Swimming Champions were:Stiggant – Georgia D’AmicoMichel – Kye HunterNewman – Harry DeakinAnderson – Abraham Arnaud Students who won an event will now progress through to the Mullum Division Swimming competition being held on Friday 9 March. We wish all these students the best of luck and am sure they will challenge themselves to give 100% and represent the school with pride. The day is not only about recognising swimming success but also about building house spirit, leadership and cross year level friendships for all students as well as students and teachers building relationship outside the classroom setting. As part of this, students were awarded

prizes for best dressed. This year the competition was at its highest with many fantastic costumes being made. The eventual winners of the competition were • Best Political statement: Trump Wall (Nathan

Fairchild, Nick Grace and Darcy Broad),• Best water themed costume: Skin Divers

(Kiralee Turpin, Jade Ryan and Maddie Goodman)

• ‘Hottest’ outfit: Three Devils (Brooke Turner, Eliza Shiels and Maddie Jennings)

• ‘That’s a good idea’ costume: Three Blind Mice (Alana Fenton, Ruby Martin and Maddie Kaye)

• ‘Very creative’: Crayola Crayons (Anya Tyssen, Jasmine Grisold, Amie Grisold, Lauren Eadie, Phoebe Joy and Victoria Olofsson)

In addition to these awards Angus Evans was awarded the house spirit award for competing in nearly every event, coming dressed as the ‘sushi swimmer boy’ and constantly encouraging others whilst also giving his best. The 8 house captains (Luke DeZwart, Ben Davies, Maddy Jennings, Tyson Jaksic, Kassie Jones, Tom Davis, Matt Baynon and Madison Goodman) did a fantastic job in promoting the day, encouraging students and developing house spirit. The day finished off with a house versus staff inflatable crocodile relay which was fiercely contested. Whilst there was much sabotage (and cheating) undertaken by all houses and the staff team the students still manage to come out victorious. Congratulations to all students and staff who involved themselves in this event. All students should be congratulated on their efforts and behaviour on the day. A big thank you also goes to all the staff who contributed to making the 2018 House Swimming Carnival a successful and enjoyable day

Taking the ChallengeThis year, every Wednesday, Year 9 students are undertaking a program ‘Taking the Challenge.’ This program provides students with an opportunity to develop their social and teamwork skills and begins to prepare students for their future years of High School and the outside world. In our first week, students were required to create their own ‘sled’ out of pool noodles, cardboard boxes, tape and string. The sled needed to be able to carry a student around a race course without them touching the ground with a minimum of two students pulling. This task required students to work in a team, problem solve and be creative.

The following week students went on a walk from Warrandyte High School to Westerfolds Park for the P.E component in the program. In the upcoming week, students will be creating a Vlog of their experience, highlighting some of the challenges they faced and how they overcame them. This week, on Wednesday 21 February, students participated in a Leadership Workshop hosted by the local YMCA. This was the first of four sessions that will help students look at what leadership is, how to develop their leadership skills and how to build positive relationships with their peers. For the introduction session, students were required to consider what a leader is to them and why a leader can be important in a group situation.

Students worked as a team to participate in several hoola hoop challenges as well as who could create the tallest tower with only balloons, straws and sticky tape.Further in this week’s ‘Taking the Challenge Session’, students also looked into the online careers program WIRL and began taking positive steps in considering what they want their future to look like. They were able to take a ‘Career Quiz’ to see which careers may suit them best and began to develop and create a Career Action Plan and Profile that they will be able to use throughout this year and their upcoming years at Warrandyte High School.

JOIN IN THE FUN APRIL 28th

In case you don’t know, the Warrandyte HS Parent Association hold one big fun fund raiser each year – our annual Trivia Night.

In the past, we have raised money to do things like: put air conditioning in the VCE Centre, carpet in various parts of the school, update the DLC, improve seating around the yard, supply a defibrillator and more! Last year, we purchased the large backdrop needed in the theatre.

This year we are raising funds for the school grounds, and our Trivia Night theme is “It’s a Garden Party”

Now that does not mean you need to be a Botanist to answer the questions, we interpret our themes in very quirky ways!

You can book a table of 10 people or just come on your own and we will find you the best seat in the garden!

We’d especially love to see as many new parents as we can.

Details are: Sat April 28th at 7.00 sharp in the school theatre. BYO food and drink, tea and coffee supplied. $25/head

Feel free to dress up if that’s your thing or to decorate your table for a Garden Party (but you don’t have to)

Lots of prizes, fun games and an exciting silent auction. BOOK at the Office 9844 2749
