Education Day

The Open day last Tuesday (16th May)

was awesome. It was wonderful to

see so many friends and families

supporting the children by coming to

visit their classrooms in the afternoon.

The choir performance in the evening

was terrific!! I commented to Mrs.

Page that it was very theatrical,

entertaining and the singing was

excellent too! Please spread the word

about our amazing school. Word of

mouth is always the best way of

promoting the great things we are

doing here at Dorset Primary School!

Arts Day

A big thankyou to Madame Annalisa

and her Arts committee for organising

our Arts day last week. The children

were so excited from the beginning

and really engaged in all aspects of

the day. Seeing ours Arts program

showcased and celebrated in many

ways highlighted the diverse Arts

program being implemented at the

school. The children really loved the

day and were pleased they were doing

‘no work’ for the day. Little did they

know!!

Working Bee I know this a little late as there was no

newsletter last week but I need to

truly thank the parents for attending

our twilight working bee 2 weeks ago.

The amount of work done that

evening was terrific; from gutters to

weeding. Every bit helps and

contributes to the school looking

fantastic.

Curriculum Day

Last Wednesday was our first report writing

curriculum day at Dorset PS. It was a new

experience for our school but seem to be

very rewarding. It was a good opportunity

for teachers to collaborate and ensure their

reports are consistent and accurate. The

teachers are continually working on

delivering high quality programs and this

should be reflected in the reports. Parent-

teacher interviews will take place week 1 of

term 3. Booking details will be made

available closer to the time.

Market Day

The 6th of June will be the Grade 5/6

Market Day. The children in consultation

with the teachers have been working very

hard to organise the day. There seems to

be a huge variety of stalls and the children

are all involved in the organisation of it!

Hands on is the best way to gain financial

knowledge and the Market Day will

definitely provide the children with the

opportunity to learn all aspects of money

matters.

Swimming

The Grade 3/4s began the swimming

program this week. I have attended several

sessions and have been pleased to see the

children enjoying it and learning how to

swim. I know there has been some concern

in the past but it is truly shaping up to be a

worthwhile program.

DORSET ARTS AROUND THE WORLD DAY Last Thursday, Dorset Primary school held its very first Arts around the world Day. In the lead up to this special day, we were treated to a Chinese dragon performance at assembly, made by the year two students who also played percussion instruments to accompany the dragon dance. Then on Thursday the 18th May, students came to school dressed in wonderful bright colours, ready to celebrate the Arts. The students were given activities in French, Music, PE and Visual Art representing that Art domain with activities and its place of origin. For example, Marbles dates as far back to the Egyptian Empire, Hopscotch to the Roman Empire. Instruments were made in Music representing Africa and South America and Visual art creations came from all around the world. In French the students learnt about a French artist, famous for painting the African jungle. Integrating the Arts into the school curriculum is strongly encouraged by the education department, and we at Dorset Primary school pride ourselves for being forward thinking in our approach to education and learning. Arts day was a great success.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY REPORT FROM THE L.R.C

This term, Foundation students have been learning how to open, close and clear apps on the iPads. “I liked playing ‘Eggy Words’ on the iPad and reading books” Noah FC “I liked using the iPad to take pictures.” Sam FC Years One and Two have using the iPad and a laptop to play the same games, then comparing the two digital devices. “I learnt how to use a mouse on a computer and I would prefer to play the games on a laptop, so I get better at using a computer.” Charlotte 2C

Years Three and Four have been creating, completing and presenting a survey on different types of digital hardware. “Using ‘Pages’ was a new way for me to record the information from my survey. I am looking forward to sharing my results with my grade in ‘kidblog’. Indy 4B Years Five and Six have been thinking about all the Digital Devices in our school, their impact on our environment and creating some possible solutions. “I think that we can actually save energy and power by using solar panels. This will have less impact on our environment and save us money.” Remi 5/6 A As well as all these exciting Digital Technology activities, it is terrific to see so many children borrowing regularly. ART NEWS What an amazing start to art we are having this term… On Monday 8th May we were very lucky to have the Grade 1 and 2’s collaborative Chinese dragon visit during assembly to do a dance. Some very special helpers got to hold the dragon while it moved around the gym. 2B also did a great job sitting up the front playing the drums. This was an exciting introduction to our Arts Around the World Day that was held on the 18th of May. The grade 1 and 2 students are also all busy at work participating in Fairy-tale unit where they have already designed some princes and princesses with the idea of challenging what is beautiful. This week we have started working on our Big Bad Wolf Wanted posters. The foundation students have also got off to a tremendous start this term. They have been busy participating in a topic titled Art and the Artist. So far students have been introduced to masks from different time periods and the ancient art of clay. The children had a fantastic time with their hands exploring clay’s texture and making a special pinch pot for a loved one. The children take lots of pride in seeing their art on display around the school. Look out in the coming weeks for some Art’s day artwork, along with pieces that the children have been busy creating during lessons.

CHAPLIANS CHAT WITH DAVE - CHORES Having regular chores is great for developing responsibility.

Sometimes getting kids to actually do their chores can be more of a chore than the chores themselves. So, what can we do to inspire

chore success? Competition. Create some playful competitions that result in a variety of rewards. Base the games around accomplishing

the tasks needing to be done. Scavenger Hunt. For the littles, give them a prize for collecting a certain number of toys. For the bigs, hide a few toys in hard to find places and reward them when the specially hidden toys are added to the rest of collection. Crank up the music.

While everyone does their list of chores, turn up the family’s favourite playlist and enjoy some bop-bop-bopping along with your

cleaning. Shopping list. Let one of the kids control the shopping list. They can give the others (you included) items to gather. Tell the list manager to tick off the items when they are delivered to the trolley. Make it

fun! We’ve all heard it – I’m bored! Keeping the boredom to a minimum is the key to

accomplishing tasks, chores and routines.
