Welcome back! I hope that you all had the opportunity to have a relaxing break enjoying the time with family and friends. I spent my holiday away cruising from Hong Kong to Singapore – both places are just so interesting and offer cultures that are simply amazing. The weather was hot and humid and shopping, touring and sight-seeing was a huge focus. We had a great time. It has been terrific chatting to our students this week hearing and reading about all their holiday activities. Playing with friends, going to the movies, swimming, camping and eating lots of chocolate Easter eggs were the most popular activities. It’s great to see the children back at school and raring to go with what is shaping up to be yet another fabulous term of learning at Donvale PS. Parent Newsletters: Year level Term 2 Parent Newsletters have gone home this week. Please be sure to read them as they are full of information of events planned for the term with important dates that should be added to your diaries. It’s going to be another busy term at Donvale PS! Curriculum Day: Each year, the Education Department grants all government schools four Curriculum Days for the purposes of staff professional development. We have currently used one of our days at the commencement of the school year; as such we have three days remaining. These days have been set and approved by School Council with our second day coming up tomorrow (Friday 21 st April) and the third being Friday 5 th May. A reminder that these days are student free days. The staff will be spending these professional learning days focused on the teaching of Reading Comprehension. We have a Literacy consultant, Lorraine Edwards, presenting on both days so I’m sure that they will be both purposeful and productive. Please ensure that you add these dates to your diary and a reminder that all Curriculum Days are student free days. School Council 2016: Our School Council AGM was held last night. I would like to formally welcome our 2017 School Council to our community. Congratulations to Evan Raftopoulos who was re-elected as our School Council President. Congratulations also to George Condos who was re-elected as School Council Vice-President. Both Evan and George are extremely focused on ensuring that the students of DPS have the best learning opportunities made available to them; as such I know that both members will continue to be very active and supportive members of our community. We bid a fond farewell to Bahman Shabani who joined us last year. During his time on School Council,

Anzac Day: Anzac Day next Tuesday, is a day for us to celebrate the spirit of Australia and honour our

many men and women who have lost their lives for our country. ANZAC Day is probably Australia's

most important national occasion. This ANZAC day marks the 102nd anniversary of the first major

military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. On April 25,

1915, the Australian and New Zealand forces landed on Gallipoli where they met fierce resistance from

the Turkish defenders. At the end of 1915, over 8,000 Australian soldiers had been killed. News of the

landing on Gallipoli had made a profound impact on Australians at home, and 25th April has become the

day on which Australians remember the sacrifice of those who have died not only in the First World

War but all the wars since and still. Although the Gallipoli landing failed in its military objectives, the

Australian and New Zealand actions during the campaign left us all a powerful legacy. The creation of

what became known as the ‘ANZAC legend’ has now become an important part of our national identity.

I know that our families of Donvale PS will spend some time acknowledging and remembering our past

and current service men and women.

Earlier today I took our four school Captains to the Templestowe Memorial Reserve where they

represented our school by attending the School’s Anzac Day service held by the Rotary Club of

Templestowe. They joined around 750 other school students in honouring our lost servicemen. The

School Captains participated in a moving ceremony and had the opportunity to lay a wreath on behalf of

our school. Our Captains represented our school proudly; they are wonderful leaders and role models

to their fellow students.

School Photos: Our annual school photo shoot took place today. This year is a very special year in

that it is Donvale PS’s 50th birthday celebration. As such, the whole school photos taken will be an

acknowledgement of this special year and the students currently attending our school. We have been

lucky with the weather and the school is looking great. The photos will certainly showcase our school

and provide opportunities for our community to reflect on Donvale PS past and present.

50th Birthday Cocktail Party Celebration: As part of our ongoing birthday celebration, School

Council have organised a Cocktail party for all members of our community (past and present) to attend.

More information and details on this event will be distributed via Snippets and our Facebook site so

please ensure that you keep an eye out for this. In the meantime, please add Friday 16th June into your

diary. The cocktail party will take place at our school in the Senior building. Cost is $45pp with all food

and drink provided. Hope to see you there.

Kind Regards

Lena Clark

Program Update

Dear families,

Welcome back and we hope you had a good holiday! It has been a shorter week at the program due to the Easter public holiday as well as

the upcoming Curriculum day. This Friday will be a school Curriculum Day and OSHClub will not be running. If you would like to find

out if there are any nearby schools offering long day care on Friday 21st of April please feel free to contact our head office on (03) 8564

9000. This week we had Clare’s birthday and the children were able to assist in baking a birthday cake for her! On Wednesday, we also

had the lock down procedure for the term and the children participated very well. We will have different activities next week to celebrate

Anzac day and cultural diversity week.

Remember bookings can be made right until 12pm the night before, or you can book on the day by calling or leaving the

text message but there will be an extra charge of $3.00 for bookings within 24 hours. If you’re ever stuck and would like

your child to attend OSH After School Care you can call me or leave a message on 0402 362 443 and I will get back to

you. For some reason if you need to cancel the child from attending the after school care session you can cancel online if

it is before 24 hours or leave a text message on the program phone (0402362443/98422261) if it is on the day.

Please remember to update the contact details (Especially the phone

numbers and address) on the enrolment form if there is any change. This can
