FROM THE PRINCIPAL FROM THE PRINCIPAL Welcome back to Term 2. I hope everyone had a terrific break and managed to enjoy some rest and relaxation. Our students settled back into routines quickly and effectively this week. It was pleasing to see so many happy faces ready and eager to start. This term will see our students involved in a number of extra curricula activities including excursions, incursions and sporting activities. As the term progresses, teaching staff will focus on compiling student Semester One reports. These reports will be forwarded to families electronically from this semester. Further information will be made available as we work for the first time through this process. We welcome Mrs Watson to G7. Mrs Watson will take on the fulltime teaching role for the remainder of the year. We welcome Miss Davis into an additional Deputy Principal role as part of our Administration Team. I look forward to another busy term, working with a fantastic and supportive whole school community. NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM – LITERACY & NUMERACY LITERACY & NUMERACY ( NAPLAN) NAPLAN) A reminder that our students in years 3 & 5 will take part in the NAPLAN in Week 3. Students will be tested in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar & punctuation) and numeracy, using common national tests. The key purpose of the NAPLAN is to provide system, school, parents and caregivers with information about student performance in relation to nationally-agreed achievement bands. The achievement bands represent increasing levels of skills and understandings. For each year group in each assessment, there is a national minimum standard that represents the minimum standard of literacy and numeracy skills considered necessary for students to progress through schooling. Please contact classroom teachers if you would like more information on these tests. Please ensure that students are at school on time and that classes are not disrupted during NAPLAN Testing. ADDITIONAL CLASSROOM ADDITIONAL CLASSROOMS Two additional classrooms (Pre-primary – T3, Mrs Halls and Year 2 – T5 – Mrs Farrow) will be lifted into place next Tuesday 2 May. We look forward to students moving into these classrooms within a couple of weeks of installation. T4, Mrs Rhodes class, will meet in their room at the commencement of the day however will be relocated to the Library for the remainder of the day. Mrs Rhodes will inform families of further details leading up to this time. ANZAC SERVICEANZAC SERVICE

Our Aveley Primary School students and community members participated in our ANZAC service at the end of last term. Well done and thank you to the staff and students who coordinated and presented at this event. We received significant feedback from our wider community to advise of their

appreciation and congratulations for a job well done.

Thank you to all the families who provided the floral material for the wreaths. A special thank you to the following parents who worked together

to make the beautiful wreaths.

Michelle Foot, Stefanie Beverley, Sejal Diyan, Debbie Urquhart, Mary Jumila,

Bianca Millson, Lizette Fourie

CONNECT COMMUNITY EVCONNECT COMMUNITY EVENTENT

To provide an opportunity to find out more about our local community, the City of Swan supports an annual Connect Community Event here in Aveley. On Sunday 2 April (last term), our Aveley PS Choir performed at this event, as they have every year since 2012. Thank you to our Music Specialist, Chris Spencer, for coordinating this event and to the students who performed on the

day.

PLAYING ON EQUIPMENT BEFORE AND AFTER SCPLAYING ON EQUIPMENT BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOLHOOL

Some members of our school community chose to supervise their children while they play on school equipment before and after school. We appreciate that this occurs, however would like to remind families that it is done only when parents/carers are closely supervising their children and with the understanding that the school or Department does not accept Duty of Care. You should ensure that your child plays safely and is not in breach of school rules. This includes that school community members do not ride bicycles or scooters on school property. Thank you for your cooperation in supporting our school to be a safe place for

everyone.

CO2&U (LOW CARBON SCCO2&U (LOW CARBON SCHOOLS PILOT PROGRAM)HOOLS PILOT PROGRAM)

Our CO2&U students (in their second year as part of the Low Carbon Schools Pilot program) have continued to meet to discuss and coordinate sustainability ideas to contribute to reducing our school’s carbon footprint. Check out the following link which showcases some of our students’ involvement in

this project.

WASTE AUDIT VOLUNTEEWASTE AUDIT VOLUNTEERS NEEDEDRS NEEDED

Our annual Waste Audit is happening on Tuesday, 2 May. As our school has grown considerably since 2012, this year we would like to call for approximately 10 parent volunteers. Mrs Griffiths and Mr Longbottom will be overseeing the running of the audit and a group of year 6 students will assist with the weighing and counting of the collected waste items. We are specifically asking for volunteers to help supervise the exit and entry points for approximately 35 minutes from 1.05 to 1.40 pm. If you are able to help please contact Mrs Griffiths in T2 or

email [email protected].

WASTE FREE WEDNESDAYWASTE FREE WEDNESDAY

As part of Aveley Primary School’s commitment to embedding waste minimisation practices within our school, we will be holding our first ‘Waste Free Wednesday’ in week 4 on Wednesday, 17 May. During recess and lunch, bins will be available for the disposal of all organic matter (fruit, veg, food scraps) and paper wrappers/ Lunch bags. No bins will be available for the disposal of plastic, foil, drink or yoghurt containers of any sort. Here are a sample of amazing lunch boxes to

inspire you to help us achieve a waste free day.

As this initiative is a pack it in, pack it out approach and non organic lunch waste will be sent home, please consider placing items like yogurt in containers that can be easily sealed. Also opened poppa drink boxes, may cause mess in bags as they also will be returned home. Cold water drink fountains are available to all students which will eradicate the need for these environmentally unfriendly options. We look forward to everyone supporting this whole school

approach.

Thanks from the Sustainable Schools Initiative Committee

CROSS COUNTRY CROSS COUNTRY

Our Interhouse Cross country is being held next Friday, 5 May. Events like these cannot run without the generous support of parents and we will require 8 parent helpers on the day. If you are able to

assist on the day in any capacity please contact Mitchell Harvie at [email protected] .
