15 September 2009 No. 15 FROM THE PRINCIPAL : Dear parents and friends of Holy Cross College On 4 September, we welcomed many fathers, grandfathers and their sons into the College Chapel for the Fathers’ Day Mass. Passionist priest, Fr Gary Perritt said the mass and offered the dads a few aphorisms in his sermon that engaged those present, as well as offering some wisdom about father hood. Among them were “Sometimes the poorest man leaves his son the richest inheritance.” And “Good fathers make good sons.” And the Mark Twain classic that many fathers would be able to relate to: “When I was 14 my father was so ignorant I could harldy stand to have him around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years!” At Monday’s Feast of the Holy Cross mass, awardees of the 2009 Community Service Awards were presented to the College. The Old Boy awardee was Professor Andrew Sindone (Class of 81), Cardiologist and Consultant Physician, Director of the Heart Failure Unit and Department of Cardiac Rehabilitation at Concord Hospital and Consultant Cardiologist at Ryde Hospi- tal. Andrew is also Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Health, University of Western Sydney and Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney. A university medallist with a PhD in cardiology, Professor Sindone has man- aged to balance his professional life of service with family life, as well as having time for community work, being patron of two charities which raise money for people with heart disease. He also undertakes charitable work for the National Heart Foundation. The College was honoured to have Professor Sindone as our guest of honour. In his acceptance speech to the College, Professor Sindone’s words resonated strongly with some of the Patrician qualities that we have emphasised with the boys this year—the importance of working hard; caring for others; making sacrifices and attending to the little things. Here is what he said: Father, Brothers, teachers, ladies and gentleman, boys, Firstly I would like to thank you for the honour of asking me to come back to my old school today. I remember “The Cross” with fond memories. From playing handball in the playground, to playing colour comp rugby league for the mighty Delany, to receiving the cane or the strap for talking too much (I still talk too much), to assemblies and school masses. Some of those teachers have left lessons with me that I will never forget. In those days, there were many Patrician Brothers teaching at the school and I remember the Brothers coming to our home for dinner and playing chess against the most senior brother – and beating him. I left Holy Cross at the end of Year 12 and moved to Newcastle to study to become a doctor, but the values that I was taught here have stayed with me throughout my life. You can become anything you want, as long as you work hard. One of my teach- ers (who is here today) said that success was 95% perspiration and 5% inspiration. Or as is often said, the harder I work, the luck- ier I get. I have been lucky to be able to come here. To enjoy the privileges we take for granted, such as education, a roof over our heads and full stomach. There are always tough times on a journey of life and you never know what challenges will be thrown your way. Hopefully, your time here will prepare you. Continuing with the Catholic Faith has been a great source of strength for me. I have tried to make a difference with my life by becoming a doctor and specialising in heart diseases. I thought that this was important. If you can leave this world having improved the lives of others, then your life was worthwhile. Little things can make a difference. I felt that there were two sorts of study: study to pass exams and study to become a good doctor. I have seen a lot of suffering in my work and tried to reduce suffering. I tell my patients that I have three jobs: to make them feel better, to make them live longer and to keep them out of hospital! When I look out of the window of the Cardiology ward at Concord Hospital, I can see the Bell Tower of Holy Cross College looking over me and I proudly point it out to my colleagues and say: “That’s where I went to school”. Just remember that with hard work you can make it too. Professor Andrew Sindone Adam Taylor Principal

HCC Star of the Week—Shivam Patel Yr 7 This young man has made a very positive start to his High School career, earning him-self the respect of peers and staff alike. He has demonstrated great Patrician values through fellowship, compassion and pride. He is a well mannered and polite student, who attends to the little things. Here are a few qualities his peers have said about him: - He is always nice, kind and caring. - He always encourages others to do their best and helps friends out when in need. - He works hard. - He is patient and forgiving. - He always says 'hello'. - He never comes to school without a smile. - He is a good friend. For these Patrician qualities and for the values proudly and consistently displayed by this young man, Shivam Patel was awarded the Year 7 Community Service Award for 2009. Shivam comes to us from Yates Avenue Public School, Dundas. Congratulations Shivam! Ms Patrizia Tripodi Year 7 Coordinator

From the Assistant Principal The new House System is now up and running. Points accu-mulate from whole school events such as the Athletics Carni-val and the Walkathon. Students will be awarded points for their house between now and the end of the year for things such as a perfect diary, excellent behaviour and effort, com-munity service and merit awards. Towards the end of Term 4 there will be a special House Assembly to announce the win-ning house for the year. Can I remind parents that if your son is off sick for the day or running late to school that you phone us by 9am of that morning. A thought from Boys Education expert Ian Lillico William Pollack in his book "Real Boys" says we need to learn a new way of talking to boys so that they don't feel ashamed or afraid to share their feelings. The phrase "how could you have done that?" should be replaced with "what's happened?" so as not to trigger the shame response which causes boys to clam up through embarrassment, especially when this is done in front of their friends. Dads will often find that their son is a bit prickly towards him and this is a natural part of a boy trying to assert his independence. Regular physical activity with your son will go a long way to smoothing relationships between the two of you. Activity with him is a great way of bonding without the need for conversation.  Mr. Peter Buxton Assistant Principal Pastoral

MUSIC CORNER

Music at Holy Cross College is growing each year. So many events have already occurred in the first two terms of which our College band and College choir have been a part of. On the brink of completing year 12, I felt it was important to highlight the talents of two of our sen-ior students, Owen Milward and Jordan Blackwell. These year 12 students have only ever played covers of other songs. Only recently did they extend their creative skills and begin composing their own songs. After attending (only as observers) the local Battle of the Bands for the last three years, Owen and Jordan decided to ‘go out with a bang’ in their last year of school life, and actually par-ticipate in this competition. Their aim was to have fun, and for the first time, play and sing their original songs to the public. Their performances won them the competition with a $500 prize and an interview for a local radio station, with compliments all- round. This was the first time Holy Cross students’ won this competition and congratulations go out to them and the hard work they put into preparing their own compositions.

Their confidence levels boosted from this win and these same students entered a Triple J competition, a very infamous radio station for all the rock music lovers. Their task was to record and post on the Triple J website, an original song. I organised a recording session at the Institute of Music on a Sunday, and they spent 8 hours there recording, perfecting and learning about the music business and what it means to be part of this great experience. I believe the boys learnt a lot, and their passion and incredible talents in music and song writing will drive them to achieve whatever goals they wish to achieve in the future once they leave this safe haven, known as ‘school’. Owen and Jordan didn’t win this competition, but their experience in the recording studio was hopefully the beginning of bigger things to come. Many wishes to these Year 12 boys during their final term at school, and I am proud to have had them as part of the Music Department. That is all for now in the music corner, stay tuned for more updates! Daniela Gamma Music Coordinator

Japanese & Italian News Over the past semester Year 8 Japanese classes have been practising their speaking, listening and responding skills in “Hiragana”. The last two weeks each student has been preparing a speech for his assessment task, performing a dia-logue in pairs in front of the class. Some very interesting and informative conversations have taken place. The following students are to be congratulated on their achievement of the top grades in Japanese last semester. Harrison Campbell, Chris Mather, James Clark, Liam Story, Andrew Jamons, Feroz Shad, Ben Johansson, Matthew Est-wick, Mitchell Kenny, Nicholas Meredith, Daniel Kassif, Jason Stanton Year 8 Italian has also been practising their speaking and listening skills, having animated conversations about them-selves, their families and hobbies. This is in preparation for their exam in Term 4. The following students are to be congratulated on their achievements of the top grades in Italian last semester. Robert Tuhtoka, Michael Stenta, Alessandro Blasonato, Adam Cusumano, Jarah Crook, Samuel John Lazarte, Joseph Ruggeri, Jack Rumore, Alexander Sghabe, Gianfranco Villacorte. College Walkathon update Due to the great weather and the support of parents the walkathon was completed with-out incident this year, not like 2008 where we had to pick the students up due to the rain. The College warmly thanks all parents who have assisted in the running of the walkathon. Whether that be at check points around the course or at the card centre back here at the college. Without your assistance we could not run an event as big as this. At the final tally the boys have promised $16,843.00, this is an improvement on the last

couple of years. I would like to thank the boys for their efforts and the people who have supported them in this fundraiser. I would like to acknowledge the work of Mr Chase in organising the course and the allocation of staff and parents to their various positions. This is a time consuming activity, and, when added to his other responsibilities shows a great deal of dedica-tion. To finalise the walkathon, the boys need to return the promised money as soon as possible. They will receive one raffle ticket for the first $50.00 they raise and another raffle ticket for each $5.00 they raise after that. At the next College assembly the prizes will be drawn,. The boys do not have to be at the College on that day to receive their prize as their name will be on the raffle ticket. The prizes include. a mountain bike, a four gigabyte MP3 player, an I Pod docking station, a package of six movie passes, a package of four movie passes. First name drawn has first pick of the prizes and so on. If the first drawn student is away they will make a selection on the first day back at school and the other boys will select in turn after that. I hope every one involved in the day enjoyed themselves and we can work to increase the amount of money raised next year. Again a special thankyou to the parents who attended on the day and we look forward to seeing you again next year. Happy Walking Keith Rugg Administration Coordinator

Accelerated Reader Achievers At the beginning of this year, Ms. Trish Baran, the College Literacy Co-Ordinator, introduced the Accelerated Reader program to all Year 7 and year 8 students. Students were initially tested for their reading ranges, and each class visits the Library during one English lesson per cycle, where students are encouraged to read widely within their reading range. Once a book is read, students take a quiz which tests their comprehension, results are recorded, and points are earned based on the level of the book. During the course of Semester 1 each class worked towards earning points and, as a result, Ms Freckmann’s class 7ENG2 and Ms Tripodi’s class 8ENG4 excelled. Both classes will be treated to a pizza lunch as a fitting reward for their efforts. The points have been reset for Semester 2 and, at the end of this year, awards will be presented. On Friday 4th of September, individual rewards and certificates were presented at the school assembly, with Mr Taylor con-gratulating the students. The awards were:

Highest Achieving students from each class - most points earned, highest number of books read and highest percentage correct on quizzes:-

Nathan Skrivanic of 7ENG1, Don Pike of 7ENG2, Josh Skelly of 7ENG3, Finley Kidman of 7ENG4, Robert Tuhetoka of 8ENG1, Andrew Jamons of 8ENG2, Jack Rumore of 8ENG3, Ashley Wright of 8ENG4. Hardest Working student with Most Marked Improvement:- Anthony Yomona of 7ENG1, and Jake Antouny of 8ENG3. Highest Achiever for each Year Group:- Connor McDermott of 7ENG2, and Lachlan Pinder of 8ENG4.

Congratulations to all these boys! Keep up the great work and continue reading and achieving! Thank you to all classroom teachers for all your efforts and encouragement of the boys. A special thank you must go to Ms Judith Rooney and Mrs Marianne Hoey for their outstanding work in the Library in process-ing new and existing Library books and helping boys choose books and take quizzes during and outside of AR classes. From the Year 12 Office.

1. A reminder to all of Parents that the Year 12 Farewell assembly is scheduled for Friday 2nd October start-ing at 11.30 a.m., in the Centenary Hall. We would like all parents to be seated by no later than 11.15 a.m. This will be followed in the evening with another occasion as we gather once again in the College Chapel for the Graduation Mass and Presentation night starting at 6.30 p.m. Once again we ask that all parents are seated about 15 minutes prior to the start of the Mass.

2. I would like to remind all parents to contact the College and advise us of their son’s absence. Our expec-tations are that all Year 12 students should be now using their class time to revise and to prepare for their HSC exams. All subject teachers are working hard to ensure that this happens and have a multitude of knowledge and tips to pass on to their students.

3. The deadline for payment to the Year 12 Formal (Thursday 12 November, Waterview Convention Cen-tre, Homebush) is Friday 18 September.

4. Lastly I would like to Congratulate Ryan Fonti for receiving the Archbishop of Sydney Award for student excellence. He was presented with his medallion along with other recipients from the Sydney Diocese, at a beautiful ceremony at Saint Mary’s Cathedral, on Tuesday 8 September. Ryan was recognized for all of his hard work around the College and for his helpful nature. His Citation as read out by Daniel Lia from Year 11, is as follows:

“Ryan Fonti, a member of the senior student council is held in the highest esteem by the College community for his selfless and noble approach in supporting all extra-curricula activities in particular the social justice group.

He has also been recognized for his volunteering work in the ICT department as well as being an excellent mentor to the junior student councillors.

He embodied the Patrician spirit of hospitality and welcome when he set up an internet café service for the WYD pil-grims and volunteered his time every night during the school holidays to facilitate it.”

A Grade CCC Match Report

On Tuesday the 1st of September 2009 all of year 11 went to watch the A grade Football team play soccer in Catholic Combined Colleges Competition. It was a grand final and the Year 11 students showed a lot of good school spirit by cheering the boys on as they entered the field at Seymour Shore Park at Sutherland. The team knew that they had a tough game on their hands trying to beat Freeman College Bonnyrigg The referee blew his whistle to commence the start of the first half. The boys from Holy Cross College strung some good passes early on in the game when Alessandro Mazzeo put in a beautiful cross but no one was at the back post to finish. Holy Cross College kept on putting the pressure on Freeman College. Holy Cross made a mistake at the back that allowed Freeman to score. Off the kickoff the Holy Cross boys tried to equal-ize but were very unlucky to put to ball in the back of the net. 5 minutes before the end of the first half Alessandro Mazzeo was fouled outside the 18 yard box and Ricky Yun placed the ball on the spot .A wonderful taken free kick from Ricky Yun put Holy Cross right back into the game. It was one all at the end of the first half. The second half had commenced and again it was Holy Cross who came out firing in the first couple of minutes. The coach of the A grade team Mr. Kisrwani made a couple of substitutions. Clayton Musimeci came off and Terry Georga-kopoulos came on. Adam Criscione came off for Ryan Sawdy. Later on in the game Freeman College was back in front with 5 minutes to go. The score was two one in favour of Freeman College. After that Holy Cross knew they needed to score a goal and to stay alive. They needed to put the ball in the back of the net but were very unlucky on a lot of occasions. During the last couple of minutes Freeman College scored another goal. 3-1 to Freeman College. The boys from Holy Cross knew it was over and were going to be runners up but didn’t give up until the referee blew the final whistle. Just before the referee blew the final whistle Alessandro Mazzeo had a beautiful shot outside the 18 yard box and was unlucky as the ball went over the cross bar. After that opportunity Holy Cross wanted at least one goal when Davide Talone had a cracker of a shot outside the 18 yard box hitting the crossbar. After that the boys knew it was all over. The ball was kicked and the referee blew the whis-tle for full time. The boys from Holy Cross were dis-appointed with their loss but were to be congratu-lated on the way they showed their sportsmanship during and after the game and on the great way they played. The coach Mr. Kisrwani and the team is to be con-gratulated also on taking the A grade team this far. MCS GOLF REPORT—THURSDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER, 2009

On Thursday 10th September, four of Holy Cross College’s golfers made their way out to Penrith Golf Club for the annual MCS Golf competition. Alex Sghabe (Year 8-Under 14’s), Joshua Camroux (Year 8-Under 14’s), Michael Kokkaris (Year 9-Under 15’s) and John Yim (Year 12-Under 17’s) all had an early start to the day as we departed the College at 7.15am. The boys performed well on a perfect golfing day. A huge congratulations has to go to John Yim who won the Under17’s event on a countback. Having followed John and his

playing group for the last three holes of the event, it was entertaining to see such tremendous golf. John was one over and his playing partner was even par at the sixteen hole. The Dundas student then dropped a shot on the sixteenth and got a par on the seventeenth. John got a par on both holes. All even until the last hole. John had a seven foot putt for par, his partner had a five foot putt for birdie to win the event. Unfortunately for him the putt lipped out of the hole and both boys got a par. Holy Cross wins on a countback!

Well done to all the boys for their participation and efforts on the day. I look forward to building the team next year.

MCS Touch Football 17s Thursday 27th August—Rounds 5 and 6 The HCC 17s MCS Touch Football squad played their first matches of the season after missing the last two weeks due to the Athletics Carnival and the Arrive Alive Cup. Tyler Brown, Anthony Casa, Cyrus Sajadi, Jarryd Clarke, Simon Cox, Joshua Love, Mitchell Hayward, Philip Senico, Adrian Tatola and Sam Williams represented our College. Their task was difficult as our first matches were against undefeated St. Paul's of Greystaynes. We were spirited but unpolished and gave up some sloppy tries which turned a tight match into a 6-1 loss. The second game was an im-provement against number-two ranked Dundas. Our boys worked hard but unfortunately lost the ball several times near the opposition goal area and wound up on the short end of a 5-2 result. Anthony Casa, Mitchell Hayward and Sam Williams were our scorers. Men of the match 1:6 vs St. Paul's: - 3-Anthony Casa, 2-Cyrus Sajadi 1-Philip Senico 2:5 vs Dundas: - 3- Mitchell Haywood, 2-Adrian Tatola 1-Joshua Love Thursday 3rd September—Rounds 7 and 8 Our boys braved the cold, wet, miserable weather, looming assignment and assessment deadlines and a long bus trip to represent our College for MCS 17s Touch Football at Endeavour Park Fairfield. The boys showed some im-provement from last week but were unfortunate to lose both matches to Fairfield and Parramatta by 4-1 scores. An-thony Casa scored against Fairfield on a cleverly-taken penalty and Alex Miteff bootlegged the length of the field to score in the second game. Men of the match 1:4 vs Fairfield: - 3-Joshua Love, 2-Adrian Tatola, 1-Clayton Musumeci 1:4 vs Parramatta: - 3- Anthony Casa, 2-Cyrus Sajadi 1-Philip Senico Mr Adam Rekrut

2009 CCC report. A coach’s perspective. At the conclusion of the MCS season we started our campaign in the CCC Competition a knockout competition for all Catholic College across the state. We were trying to win this cup back to back having won this competition in 2008. Our first game was against St An-drew’s College from Marayong a game in which we dominated a won 3-0. Our Second game was against Parramatta Marist College a game in which we were reduced to 10 men after 40 sec-onds. After going down 1-0 we were able to show true grit and composure to eventually win 3-1. Our third game, was against Blacktown Patrician College and in a sea sawing affair were the lead kept on changing between the two schools we eventually ran out 4-3 winners with two memorable goals each from Vince Leto and Jake Burkett. This qualified us to then travel interstate and to play against Marian College from Griffith who were the winners of the Wagga, Forbes and Bathurst districts. It was a very long road trip but the town and the people of Griffith were very nice and hospitable. The team that we played was a well organized team and they performed very well but once again we won in 2-1 scoreline. This qualified us for our semi final encounter against Trinity College from Lismore a big, strong and physical side and this was our first game that went into extra time after the scores were deadlocked at 1-1 at the end pf the match. Trinity had as defending for the first 8 minutes of extra time but then a beautiful through pass from Jake Burkett to out striker Alessandro Mazzeo put him in the clear and he was able to round the Goal keeper and score. This was a magnificent, disciplined and patient effort. Our final match was against Freeman Catholic College and it was one of the best games that was witnessed by all the spectators present. It was a very close affair and both teams were level 1-1 at half time after Ricky Yun scored an absolute belter of a free kick. After conceding a late goal we pushed a lot of players from our defence to attack their goal and were unlucky as we hit the post a few times and a few shots went just wide of their goal. The final score was 3-1 but to me that was not important I was especially proud of the fact that we never gave up and we earned the respect of the opposition, with their coach noting that this was the closest game that they had been involved in all year round. To the members of the A – grade Football team I hope that you can take away with you many fond memories of all of your achievements over the last two years but also remember all of the fun time we had together and all of the friendships that we built up. George Kisrwani. 2009 Holy Cross A – Grade Football Coach.
