Each year the Sacred Heart tradition resembles that of most, if not all, Catholic Colleges in that we recognise the Graduation of the Senior Class by way of a Eucharistic Celebration and an Awards Assembly. Both events are well supported by the students' families and the fact that we have little choice, given our large numbers, but to schedule the mass for Morphettville Racecourse (for the final time), which also has a kind of Catholic feel about it! Each year for the past 119 years, the Sacred Heart Principal, or Headmaster as they were once known, presents by way of an address of key ideas, values and exhortations to the students and families. In a Marist school this is made a little easier in that St Marcellin Champagnat provides numerous Marist paradigms upon which such speeches can be built. At this time of year a personal favourite is to highlight to our young women and men that the aim of imbuing young people with the virtues of a good Christian and a good citizen is integral to a Marist education. At the Eucharistic celebration we focus on the Catholic Christian notions contained within an ancient, sacred ritual. Our core Catholic Christian values and principles are at the fore and based in the Gospel of Jesus. We celebrate as the broader Sacred Heart family in a particular spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood. We call to mind an invitation to faith by our loving God. We are led by Monsignor Dempsey who shepherds the Sacred Heart flock with Christian virtues. It has a distinct religious and spiritual tone. During the recent term break a colleague shared an article on the Principles of Spiritual Intelligence (Danah Zohar, 2005). As I reflected on the article it seemed to me that this was akin to and once known as 'the gift of faith'.

SACRED HEART COLLEGE

From the Principal Dear members of the Sacred Heart College community, 2016 Graduation Ceremonies Welcome to the final term of the year and the traditional conclusion for the graduating Class of 2016.

The principles are:

Self-Awareness

Spontaneity

Being Vision and Value Led

Holism

Compassion

Celebration of Diversity

Field Independence

Humility

Tendency to ask Fundamental 'Why?' Questions

Ability to Reframe

Positive Use of Adversity

Sense of Vocation. Whilst each has its own characteristics my hope is that each of our Year 12 students deeply considers their 'Sense of Vocation'. Once this referred predominantly to the tradition of God's call to religious life such as that of a priest. In the modern era it is a 'calling' that an individual experiences to utilise their gifts and talents beyond their own enhancement or benefit. It considers the notion that service in the greater interests of a just society and a more tolerant, compassionate and merciful community is a calling beyond the status symbols of success promoted in our commercial world - status, wealth and power are but a few examples. So, as the Class of 2016 embarks on their final examinations and assessments we most certainly wish them every success as reward for their efforts. We also wish them every blessing as they journey beyond school life, hopeful that their search for a sense of vocation brings a tangible Marist, family spirit to their circle of family and friends, as well as the communities within which they will continue to build their future!

Student Safety Before and After School Students and families are reminded to be wary of approaches from strangers, especially when they are unaccompanied or travelling to and from school. If they are approached students should not respond and should not accept offers of rides or gifts. Students should seek the assistance of other nearby adults if they feel unsafe and should report the event to a trusted adult (parent or school staff member) as soon as possible. SAPOL advises that taking out a mobile phone and calling police can deter the offender and they recommend the student making a formal report to their closest police station. Students and families are also reminded that supervision at the Senior School commences at 8.30am, and that supervision of Bus Stop concludes when the final School Bus has departed. Yard duty supervision at the Middle School begins at

8.20am and afternoon bus duty supervision concludes at 3.40pm. Daniel Lynch Head of Senior School

MIDDLE SCHOOL

From the Head of Middle School Welcome to a very busy and productive Term 4. Sports Day Another hugely successful Sports Day was held on Thursday last week (20 October) and congratulations to the Joseph team, who once again, took out the shield. Fittingly, we thought the 100m runners may be up against some strong competition when a kangaroo bounded across the oval in the morning prior to the competition beginning! I would like to thank the many people who helped with the organisation and facilitation of the day, especially Mr Ashley Jenner and the Be Active Committee who have worked tirelessly for a long period of time. I would also like to acknowledge our wonderful admin, maintenance and grounds team who perform many important tasks that are integral to the smooth running of such a significant event. It was great to see so many parents, grandparents and friends of the school community come along to support the students. Middle School Sports Day photo gallery > Year 9 Social Last Friday evening (21 October), the annual Sacred Heart/Marymount Year 9 Social was held. It was a terrific evening and I must admit that our boys looked very sharp. It was wonderful to see such a high level of grooming and personal presentation - fine young men indeed. It is also a timely reminder that the term, and indeed the year, is concluding at a rapid pace. We intend to acknowledge our Year 9 students in a special way at the end of the conclusion of their time at Sacred Heart Middle. This has typically been a graduation ceremony, however, in reality it marks a change of campus and we are moving the emphasis from graduating to transitioning. In fact, it is a rite of passage and hopefully the event is a time to reflect on their journey thus far and an opportunity to think about the responsibilities they have moving forward. More details about what this event will look like will be disseminated soon. Links are being made in students’ Rite Journey class about moving into Year 10 and therefore moving to the Senior School campus in Somerton Park. Through this class we ask the boys about the things they need to let go of and the things that they need to start doing more of as they enter a new phase of their lives.

Staffing Updates There will be some significant changes in relation to staffing at the Middle School next year and we are currently interviewing for suitable replacements.

Heather Mansfield has accepted a new position at Nazareth College and is looking forward to the challenges of teaching senior Japanese.

Vincent Williams is taking a year’s leave as he pursues overseas teaching and travelling.

Lauren Wagner is taking leave in Terms 2, 3 and 4 and will temporarily be moving to Sydney.

Deb Rischin has accepted a position at the Senior School.

Both Jen Callanan and Chris Egan are concluding their time at the Middle School and will be pursuing other areas/challenges of their respective fields.

Later in the year, I will formally acknowledge and farewell staff who are permanently leaving our school community. Summer Sport Just a reminder that Summer Sport begins this weekend. Let’s hope the weather can live up to the expectation! Congratulations Congratulations to Year 6 student, William Patton, who has been selected in the State SAPSASA cricket team to play in Canberra 6-13 January 2017. Will was also announced as Co-captain last week. Well done Will and best of luck! Have a great week. Tim Mullin Head of Middle School

Kicking goals together During Week 10 of Term 3, a group of Year 8 students from Sacred Heart College Middle School participated in a Football clinic at South Adelaide Football Club.

As part of the clinic, the Sacred Heart boys met up with underprivileged kids from Families SA, some who don't have their loved ones looking out for them. Many of these children don't get to go out and kick the footy with their dad, or they don't have their mum around to help them out with their homework, so it was a great opportunity for them and for us because we all could learn different skills and have some fun together. South Adelaide players Emmanuel Irra, Matthew Rankin and the South League Coach, Bradley Gotch, were there on the day to help all of the participating boys.

They took us through a skills clinic which included teaching us how to improve our kicking and the skill of how to handball correctly. They also showed us how to kick accurately for goal. From there we played a game against each other with mixed teams so that the other boys could see what it is like to play a big game against some talented footballers. We then gathered near the grandstand to wrap up the day and enjoy some lunch together.

A big thank you to Matt, Emmanuel and Brad for their efforts to help us and give everyone some valuable tips. And another big thank you to South Adelaide Football Club for putting on not just a fantastic day, but a fantastic lunch for us. Thank you to Mr Dray and Hayden Robbins for coming and supervising. We thank all of the boys from Families SA for coming out and giving it their best shot. All of the boys from Sacred Heart did really good job and made sure all the Families SA boys were included in the drills and games, with all of them kicking at least one goal. Darcy Gluyas and Oliver Martin Year 8 students

Recycle your Mobile Phones Do you have an old mobile phone laying around the house? Old mobile phones can be recycled and their parts used, which saves an enormous amount of pollution going into landfill. There is a box in the front foyer of the Middle School for your old mobiles and power cords. Let's do our bit to care for the earth as Pope Francis urges us to do.

SENIOR SCHOOL

Important information for students studying Stage 2 subjects STAGE 2 (YEAR 12) RESULTS - this includes Year 11 students studying Stage 2 Religion Stage 2 SACE results will be available through Students Online on Tuesday 20 December, from 8:30am. Official documentation (including SACE Certificate and Record of Achievement) should also arrive by post that same day. For more information about SACE results, visit the My results section on the SACE website. Students should check their address is correct by logging onto Students Online to ensure documentation is posted to the correct address. Students need their SACE registration number and PIN to log on. The PIN is the first 4 digits of the student's birthday. (e.g. 3rd January would have PIN 0301). The PIN will be changed after the first log in (may have already changed if logged in previously). The PIN can be reset from this page if necessary. Stage 2 results will be sent to the address recorded on Students Online in December. Please email Mrs Deborah Hearl ([email protected]) by 2 December at the latest with the correct address if it is wrong. Year 12 students applying for courses through SATAC should ensure that their postal address and email is correct when they log on to SATAC - this is SEPARATE to SACE - otherwise they won't receive course offers. The contact email address should NOT be the student's school email as this account will be inactive after 31 December. STUDENTS are responsible for checking this information and changing if necessary. https://apply.satac.edu.au/lgnrg/x?loginCycle=unis2016 Will you get SACE this year? For most Year 12 students, the remaining "boxes to tick" to get SACE this year are:

- pass 3 full Year, Stage 2 subjects - pass Research Project (if they haven't already) - get 200 SACE credits.

Students expecting to complete a Certificate III this year that can count towards their ATAR must ensure I receive the required documentation by 30 November at the very latest. STAGE 2 EXAMS - IMPORTANT INFORMATION SPECIAL PROVISIONS FOR YEAR 12 EXAMS Students who are seriously ill (3 days or more) before an exam, ill on the day of an exam, or have had a significant interruption to study in the lead up to exams:

- should contact me ASAP by email at [email protected] - ensure you have spoken to me BEFORE the exam commences - the SACE Board strongly recommend students still attend, even if unwell - students who sit the exam when unwell may choose to apply to use their moderated predicted exam mark by

seeing me at the end of the exam. An appointment to see a doctor the same day must be made (doctor is not to be related to the student). If the application is approved by the SACE Board, the student will receive the better of the two marks. Surprisingly, the vast majority of students who sit the exam when unwell still do better than their moderated predicted mark!

Page 9: From the Principal - Amazon S3s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/.../images/Hearts_Term_4-Week_… · Second-hand Uniforms Neat, current uniforms are accepted for re-sale during shop

Year 12 SACE Board written examinations are scheduled to start at Sacred Heart on Monday 7 November. Students have already received an exam attendance slip and exam timetable with dates, times and locations in addition to rules relating to sitting the exam. Students must familiarise themselves with these rules and ensure that they know exactly what equipment they are/are not permitted to take into the exam room. Students should also familiarise themselves with the instructions on the front cover of each of their exams (distributed by class teachers and also accessible at the SACE Board website). I would particularly like to point out that students are not permitted to have a mobile phone or smart watch in their possession and hence these items should not be brought into the examination room. Ideally, exam attendance slips should be brought to each exam. I don't have extra copies so cannot do anything to assist if it has been lost or forgotten. It will not be the end of the world if a student forgets to bring it. It is a bit like a driver's licence - unlikely that I need to check it unless there is a problem! Pencil cases, calculator covers (if a calculator is permitted) and other paper (unless approved notes for Mathematics or IT exams) are also not to be brought into the exam room. If students are permitted to bring a calculator for one or more of their exams, it must be on the list of approved calculators. Likewise, any dictionaries need to be on the list of approved dictionaries. The links below will take you to the lists of approved calculators and dictionaries: Approved calculators: click here Approved dictionaries: click here Students should aim to arrive at the venue 20 minutes before the scheduled start time as there are a number of administrative tasks to do before the exam starts. Please be aware there is a seating arrangement. NOTE THAT STAGE 2 EXAMS CAN NOT BE RESCHEDULED. Most exams will be held in Champagnat Hall, but not ALL - so very important to check the exam timetable carefully. The location of the Stage 2 Geography exam has been altered since the timetable was first distributed to students. Geography students have been emailed about this also. Year 12 Exam timetable > YEAR 10 AND 11 EXAMS - END OF SEMESTER 2 Year 10 and 11 students have also been emailed their Semester 2 exam timetable and rules relating to exams. Year 10 and 11 Semester 2 Exam Timetable > Please note that Year 10 students will be doing their English exam on their Chromebooks. It is essential that Year 10 English students bring their fully charged Chromebook to their English exam. YEAR 12 WEEK 1 Year 11 students will have their first week of 2017 Year 12 lessons in the week following Year 11 exams. Students and parents of Year 11 students have been emailed details regarding this week (28 Nov – 1 Dec). I wish all students the best of luck with their revision programs in the lead up to final exams. Karen Bailey Director of Teaching & Learning
