In particular, we highlight our Catholic Marist ethos and emphasis on family spirit and the expectation of full involvement and support for all aspects of life at Sacred Heart. The forums provided an opportunity for the Principal and Heads of School - Mr Daniel Lynch (Senior School) and Mr Tim Mullin (Middle School) to briefly raise issues around: Master Plans, 2016 Fee Structures, Curriculum, Student Code of Conduct and Information Technology. Those attending were also provided the opportunity to raise their issues or to comment on matters of concern. It's not a simple task to consult with the parents and carers of the College and the intention is utilise these forums each Semester, or on a needs basis to communicate at a personal level. Hospitality and Technology Centre This week the St Paul's project has been completed and handed over to the College. Under the watchful eye of Mr Peter McCabe, Business Manager Operations, the $1.3M refurbishment is complete. By the commencement of next year the students will have access to two hospitality learning spaces and a 3D Design suite. Attached are a few photos taken earlier this week.

Whilst the name is yet to be finalised, the space looks amazing! For those of us who have previously attended mass at St Paul's you will barely recognise the internal fit-out - complete with leadlight atrium! Kind regards Steve Byrne Principal

MIDDLE SCHOOL

From the Head of the Middle School The end of term and indeed end of year is fast approaching. Soon our Year 9 students will be graduating and we will be welcoming over 160 new Year 6 students to Sacred Heart College Middle School. During this busy time it is important to focus on what really matters, for our students that will be to maintain high standards in all areas, including academic rigour as they approach their final assessment tasks.

At the end of this year, the tenures on the majority of our school leadership positions will conclude. In light of this we have undergone a thorough process to appoint staff members who will assist greatly in driving the school forward over the next three years. I would like to acknowledge the following staff who will assume these important positions from the start of next year - they will be valuable contact people in all school matters for both you and your sons into next year. Leader of Wellbeing: Mr Ashleigh Bryans (Year 6); Ms Jody Keller (Year 7); Mr Marcus Trimboli (Year 8); Mr Ben Dray (Year 9). Leaders of Learning and Teaching: Mr Matt Andrigo (Year 6); Ms Kate Fallon (Year 7); Ms Sharyn Davis (Year 8); Mrs Deb King (Year 9). Learning Enrichment Coordinator: Mr Sean Perry. CEA Coordinator: Mr Adam Rice. This week on Monday, the staff gathered together for a prayer service in recognition of All Souls Day - a time recognised by the Church to remember and honour those loved ones who have passed away. I would like to prayer especially for those members of our community who have passed away recently.

Eternal Rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them, May they rest in peace.

Tim Mullin Head of the Middle School

2016 Student Information Update All Middle School families should have received information in the mail regarding the 2016 school year. In addition to a letter from the Head of the Middle School, this pack also included their student record, medical detail, consents and booklists for 2016. In order to bring all student records into one comprehensive Student Management System across both the Senior and Middle Schools, all the Middle School data has been electronically transferred from one system to another. Unfortunately, this transition has not gone as smoothly as hoped and we have noticed that there are some errors appearing in this data. We ask families to please carefully read, check and note any discrepancies in the information. I would like to reassure you that the School is currently using our existing database in the day-to-day care of your child and that we are working towards ensuring that all of our student data is correct in the new system for the start of the new school year. Thank you for your patience and I apologise for any distress this may have caused. Tim Mullin Head of the Middle School

Yes, we continue to make a difference - live Hearts without Boundaries in action

Over the last 18 months during the Class Masses, generous Middle School families have donated a variety of goods supporting refugee women. These women have young babies and are without the cultural or family support that is familiar to them. These women have very little during this exciting yet vulnerable time as they welcome their newborns.

In collaboration with Dominican Sister, Sr Maureen O’Connell and the Australian Refugee Association here in Adelaide, SHC Middle School boys have made an enormous difference and contribution to the lives of young refugee women. Recently a couple of boxes of nappies, singlets, toiletries, clothing and toys were given to an Ethiopian woman who had just had her baby here in Adelaide. This woman had nothing and was overwhelmed at the welcome gesture of goods from the College.

The boys bring their donations during their Class Mass and perhaps do not think any more about it, however they do make a difference. Jennifer Callanan APRIM

Year 9 Geography Excursion On Wednesday 28 October the Year 9 Geography class accompanied by Mrs Johnson and Ms Bond, travelled independently into the city for a field trip to collect data that addressed the question, ‘Does Adelaide have a long way to go?’ The boys had devised questions in survey format that were to be asked to the general public, concentrating on sustainability, globalisation and infrastructure in regards to their chosen focus. They formulated Hypotheses in regards to Tourism, Goods, Services and Town Planning. They walked through Rundle Mall, down to Victoria Square, Gouger Street and stopped at the Central Market for lunch. One group was pleased to report that they had interviewed the Mayor of the Barossa Valley, Mr Crouch's son, and had a conversation with a Central Market Fruiterer who rewarded their good manners and polite demeanour with free samples of his wares. They then headed as a larger group to the Festival Centre/Adelaide Oval/North Terrace precinct to collect their last pieces of data. It was an extremely successful field trip putting many boys out of their comfort zone, in regards to travel, public speaking and self-motivation, but their data quotas were reached and they have returned focussed to work collaboratively on the next stage of their assignment. They were well received within our city and were great representative of the College. It was an eventful, but tiring day that supported education outside the classroom. Understanding the feelings of kids from blended families

The reality of the modern world is that a significant percentage of our students belong to blended families. For some this has been a relatively smooth and sometimes very positive transition. The behaviour of these students will attract little reason for concern at school. It’s the not so happily blended kids who need our awareness and understanding. They can sometimes feel like the proverbial ‘meat in the sandwich’. These students can often feel isolated, powerless and frustrated due to the many changes in their family structure. We can learn much from young people who have lived through family separation and are now living in blended families. Here are some thoughts a young person may have:

I am still grieving and I need time. I need you (adults) to understand me during this transitional time. “what was mine is no more and I did not choose this to happen. Grief can be acted out in many ways that doesn’t immediately appear related to the loss of the nuclear family.

I want my parents back together. This is a very common feeling in the grief process. We know it is highly unlikely to happen but the young person’s feeling should never be ridiculed.

I can’t adjust to this new arrangement as quickly as the grown-ups. Many adults try very hard to force the blended family to succeed by doing everything together but young people need to have mum or dad to themselves some of the time.

I hate it when you use me to pass on messages to my other parent. Kids should never be put in the position of being dragged into the adults’ battle but they should be respected for staying neutral.

I already have a mum or dad. Being a step-parent is a difficult role but making the decision to be a good role model before being a parent can make a positive difference to the success of a blended family.

I know you love your kids more than me. Kids need time for love to grow. During this phase they can be grumpy and difficult and it’s almost always about the young person adjusting to the changes.

SENIOR SCHOOL

Remar Red Leadership Camp From 16-18 October, the Remar Red Caravel (Year 10) travelled to Lady Northcote in Victoria for the National Red Leadership Camp. Twenty five rowers from Sacred Heart College joined another 60 from Tasmania, Western Australia and Victoria to complete a range of activities and sessions. The sessions focused on the four spokes of Remar which include:

Ministry and service

Community

Skills and knowledge (leadership)

Faith development

All rowers were fantastic participants throughout the three day camp and I cannot express how proud I am of the way they applied themselves to all sessions. Below are comments from a few rowers about their highlights.

I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank our two blue rowers (Year 11) Henry Mckay and Lachlan Sheppard for coming along and sharing their Remar experiences with the group. Thanks must also go to Majo Bogatec who kindly gave up her weekend to enable these students to experience the camp. Last not but not least, thanks also to Derek Leibbrandt, Remar Coordinator, for his exceptional organisation of all things behind the scenes.

Peter Mann Remar Red Helmsperson

My favourite session from the camp was definitely the flash mobs, seeing everyone's great performances, and ending a great night with singing and dancing with what feels like your brothers and sisters. Karl Taddeo Lonic

My favourite session was most likely the final prayer on the first night, where we explored Taize. I find it such a captivating way to connect with God and I loved how everyone got into it so well. Paulina Malycha

I loved hearing about everyone's different perspectives about faith, but I think I found the leadership skills sessions most informative and beneficial. Cara McGlaughlin

No verbal consent for medication In line with best practice the Health care centre staff will not accept verbal consent to administer medication (e.g. paracetamol/ibuprofen) to students. At the commencement of each year parents/guardians are given the opportunity to update student records and provide consent in writing for medication administration. The student diary has a section on page 10/11, outlining health care support to students, and offering a consent that can be signed for administration of medication. Please ensure this is signed and the student electronic health records can be updated accordingly. In 2016 the College will be implementing a new medication policy for day students, however in the interim we would

appreciate your cooperation to comply with this practice to ensure medication safety for all students.
