FROM THE PRINCIPALI congratulate all the year 12 students for making it to the end of the year and enjoying such a splendid Valedictory ceremony at the Adelaide Convention Centre. I was particularly pleased with the 2018 year 12 students who behaved more responsibly on the last day of school than any other year. The year 12 art exhibition showcased the students’ innovation and creativity. I am pleased to announce that Gilbert Richardson’s painting will hang in the Principal’s office for 2019. The students are all very tired. I can assure you that their teachers have worked tirelessly to support the students in their learning and to meet their deadlines. Examinations are in full swing and the students are looking forward to a well-earned rest before they face their futures.

The Charities and Recognition assembly on the Wednesday 28 November acknowledges students for academic and sporting success, as well as those who have made a contribution to the community. We also recognise outstanding

success of our staff- this year we will honour Assistant Principal, Kane Hillman, who made us all proud when he completed the recent New York Marathon running under the White Ribbon banner.

In week 8, year 8 students will participate in an immersive STEM experience investigating the reality and impact of our waste at Brighton. Year 9 students will engage with 2 isolated STEM lessons, using the scanning electron microscope and investigating our waste data. Both year 8 and 9 students will carry this knowledge into week 9 where they will participate in four structured activities around raising the profile of and enacting change in waste management in society; investigating the impact of automation on waste management; investigating their personal contribution and

creating alternative sustainable food packaging. Toward the end of week 9, they will work in small teams to develop a solution that they think we could implement at Brighton Secondary School to increase our efficiency or minimise our waste. Students will be encouraged to investigate all aspects of their solution including prototyping. Their solutions will be presented to a Shark Tank style panel consisting of industry representatives and any feasible solutions will be implemented at Brighton in 2019 and the years to come. This more robust conclusion of the school year should engage more students in the last week of school. There will be no students at school on Friday 14 December to accommodate the necessary school improvement planning for 2019.

Congratulations to Luka Moase, who came 1st out of a field of 165 competitors at the recent mountain biking competition, held at Shepherds Hill Recreation Park on Thursday 25 October.

As a school we had 9 competitors and came 4th overall. It was a terrific event, with all participants actively involving themselves in both individual and team races.

ENGLISH NEWSCongratulations!Zel Whiting (802RA) is representing SA in the UN Voice Competition.Voice is a national public speaking competition for students in year 7-10.

Students prepare a 5 minute speech about pressing global issues and are judged on their ideas and presentation skills.

Zel was selected to represent SA in the Voice National finals in Perth next year.

Young writers around Australia submitted a whopping 2,526 poems to Red Room Poetry Object, an annual poetry-writing competition for students in years 3-10.

Of the 30 shortlisted poems in the secondary section, all 3 SA poets are from BSS (Year 8 Think Bright English.)

It was in Yugoslavia that a civil war broke out,

Ground-shaking gunshots were heard in the streets, no doubt.

My late grandpa took up pottery to pass the time,

A hobby to escape from the war, the terror, the crime.

He made a small vase on the day of his death,

Then left the house, was shot, and took his last breath.

Before the cruel side effect of war took his life,

He left the vase in the hands of his children and wife.

I never got to see my grandpa's face,

But I remember him through this one small vase.

YEAR 8 GIRLS CRICKET TEAM The inaugural year 8 girls cricket team will take part in their first competition against Seaview High School in week 5. The girls have been training extremely hard with their coach Kylie Rattray and have even had some special opportunities to train with some WBBL stars; Adelaide Strikers’ players Tabby Saville and Tegan McPharlin. We wish the team good luck and hope that this is just the beginning of girls’ cricket at Brighton Secondary School.

BEACH COMPETITIONOn Monday 5 November all of Brighton Secondary School year 8 students involved in the Special Interest Volleyball program spent the day at Glenelg beach playing beach volleyball. Brighton competed against a number of Secondary Schools in Adelaide. Throughout the day Brighton students were all very successful, receiving medals in all divisions. In division 1, Brighton students were awarded Gold and Silver for both boys and girls teams. It was a really great day full of new learning experiences, laughter and fun.

YEAR 8-9 BOYS AND GIRLS TENNIS CHAMPS 2018On Tuesday 23 October and Wednesday 24 October both our year 8/9 boys and girls knockout tennis teams took part in a Round Robin day at Unley High School. Although neither of the teams qualified for the State Finals some excellent individual tennis was played on the day. Well done to the students who were selected to represent Brighton Secondary School.

MUSIC NEWSMusic events in late term 3 and early term 4 have been many and varied. The following students performed solo items at house assemblies: Lisa Lukina (Holdfast); Matthew Maio Mackay (Rapid); Xiola Brus (Buffalo); Lily Forsythe (Cygnet); and Zishan Xie (year 12 assembly). Livening up the quadrangle for Wik-Ed Wednesday events were the Dixieland Band and vocal/piano duo Izzy Mason and Charlotte-Anne Garnham.Brighton once again supported the Primary Schools’ Music Festival thanks to performances by Big Band 1, Big Band 2 and the Flute Ensemble, while the Amoroso String Quartet entertained guests arriving for the Department for Education Awards Ceremony at the Adelaide Convention Centre on the Thursday 12 October.

One of our big calendar events, the Jazz Cabaret, took place at the Grand Ballroom on the Thursday 26 October. The sell-out crowd danced the night away to the hip sounds of the jazz combo, JB1, JB2, the year 10 jazz choir, the Dixieland Band, Big Band 1 and Big Band 2, plus several featured vocal soloists.

Thanks to Billy James and the year 11 sound tech class (with Martin Oakley) for providing sound reinforcement for the Jazz Cabaret as well as for the Decibel Lunchtime Concert Series, featuring performances by Experiment One, JB1, the Brighton Staff Band and

the Jazz Combo.

Congratulations to the year 12s for their fine musical performances at the Valedictory, and for an amazing five years. We will miss you.

Congratulation also to year 8 student Tom Wilson who was awarded first prize of section C of the Australian Society for Music Education Young Composers’ Award for his solo piano piece “When the Wind Blows”, and to Shannon Whitehead (year 9) on achieving an A for her 7th Grade AMEB violin exam.

On Tuesday 30 October and Wednesday 31 October, I participated in the Wayville Concert Band Workshop. Across the 2 days, nearly 50 schools from around South Australia came together to learn and play 10 songs! With the mentors and tutors, everybody learnt so much about how a concert band works and performs. After the second day we came back at night to perform to all of our friends and family. Overall, I really enjoyed the workshop and would highly recommend it to beginner musicians.

YEAR 10 DRAMAIn week 2, the year 10 Drama students performed their immersive theatre productions.Ms McDonnell’s class performed The Children of the Black Skirt, and Ms Carter’s class performed Blinded by Love, Infatuated by Crime. The result of 12 weeks of rehearsal and collaboration, design and acting, students created engaging interactive performances to appreciative audiences from the school community.

Casting Call at Brighton Secondary School; SBA TV series ‘The Hunt’.Drama students at Brighton Secondary School have had a wonderful opportunity this semester, to audition for a professional SBS TV series ‘The Hunt’. Casting Director Angela Heesom, spent 2 days with us auditioning young people suitable for the roles. Students auditioned for both lead and supporting roles and we will hear soon which of them will be working on the series in January 2019. The process of auditioning for a professional show was invaluable for our students and opened their eyes to the process of gaining work as an actor.

VISUAL ARTS NEWSYear 12 Art, Design, Creative arts and Photography Exhibition 2018Our final exhibition for the year was held in the Concert Hall foyer to celebrate the achievements of the year 12 visual art, design, creative arts and photography students.

The students presented a wide variety of ideas through many diverse mediums. The visual design students investigated practical solutions with products ranging from posters, labels, magazines, clothing stationery, jewellery and fashion. Photographic work included explorations of the environment, family and compositional effects printed on creative mediums, such as wood, metal, paper and canvas. The visual art and creative art students' works ranged from themes of aging, the environment, exploration and social and emotional issues in society through painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking and digital woks.

This was a wonderful celebration to close the year for the creative achievements of the year 12 cohort.

YEAR 11 OUTDOOR EDUCATIONKayak Expedition, Ral Ral Creek 2018The Kayak expedition is always a highlight of the Semester. Who wouldn’t enjoy paddling a Kayak 40km over 3 days? The preparation began long before the expedition; students planned a route card, menu plan, checked equipment lists and prepared the boats. They also completed a day of skills and rescue training at the Port Noarlunga Aquatic Centre.

Over the 2 expeditions the full range of what nature has to offer was on display, with cool weather and high winds experienced by the first expedition while warm temps and soft breezes greeted the second. The loading up of the kayaks and checking the equipment immediately highlighted the natural leaders in the group and this year was no exception. Just over 4 hours from departing Brighton Secondary School we were launching kayaks onto the great Murray River at Murtho Landing (North of Renmark).

We set off early on day 2 and 3 with each leader taking it in turns navigating and managing the group. The weather conditions made way for adjustments along the way. The groups managed this well and stopped for several swims along the way. There were many laughs and even a few tears (mainly due to the many spiders positioned along the route and the mandatory capsizing drill). Everyone managed to independently cook and organise themselves effectively.

Overall, the excellent weather, skill level of the group and high morale added to the experience. There’s no substitute for the outdoors with much flora and fauna observed in a picturesque part of the State. The constant sound of the kookaburras bellowing along the route, emus drinking from the riverbank and kangaroos bounding across the landscape made the whole experience even more relevant and real.

YEAR 12 OUTDOOR EDUCATIONThe year 12 Outdoor Education students undertook their self-reliant camp at the Glenelg River over 4 days at the end of term 3. This expedition was planned, organised and run by the students as a culmination of their learning and experience. The students team work and responsibility planning the expedition was outstanding. Each member of the class was responsible for leading a section of the experience. Highlights for the students were the Princess Margret Rose Caves, the interaction and responsibility they showed towards each other and the environment. An example of their commitment to preserving the environment includes removing the rubbish that less caring individuals had left at the campsite, so others could enjoy a more positive experience in the environment in the future.
