From the Principal  

Year 7 2017 On Tuesday, I was accompanied by Deputy Principal, Kathy O’Sullivan and parent, Barbara Lynch to attend the selection committee meeting to consider the appeals for misadventure and illness for those students who sat the Selective Schools Test seeking entry into Year 7, 2017. Working with an officer from the Department of Education High Performing Students Unit, we were able to work through the process to ensure that all of those students who had cause to appeal as a result of either illness or misadventure had their cases heard and were treated fairly where the subject of their appeal was considered to have had an impact on their performance in the test.  This is the only aspect of the selections that members of our school community have any input into throughout the whole process. It is certainly reassuring to know that all students are treated fairly and all have equal access to being legitimately considered for an offer of enrolment despite what may have been going on in their lives to impact on their test scores.  I would like to pass on my thanks to both Mrs O’Sullivan and Mrs Lynch for their time and genuine concern for the wellbeing of students seeking enrolment to our school.  Staff Professional Learning Staff will continue with their professional learning on Monday evening when we welcome Ms Megan Townes into the school. Ms Townes is an accredited Microsoft Teacher Ambassador and will demonstrate the tools available to improve learning outcomes for students and improve teacher workflow by exploring the wonders of Office 365. Staff will learn how to use OneNote, Sway and Office Mix for formative assessment, 

effective feedback, better note‐taking, learning analytics and collaborative practices.   With staff participating in this valuable training, they will be able to work with students, ensuring that more effective collaboration and communication within the learning environment can take place. In addition, students will be encouraged to develop strategies for formative assessment of work including aspects such as peer and self‐assessment using these tools. All of these link perfectly to aspects of our school plan and the capabilities that we wish to instil in our students.  Congratulations to Year 12 It was very heartening to have had the pleasure of reading through Year 12 reports and having confirmed in my mind the absolute dedication and commitment that students are displaying in their course work. This is indeed a very good sign for things to come as they move into the final stages of their learning prior to final assessment tasks, and Trial and Higher School Certificate examinations.  In speaking with Year 12 students, there is a real sense of unity as they strive to achieve their personal best across all areas of their studies. It is this support of each other, along with that which is provided by their teachers, which will have such a positive impact on their school based assessment results, rankings and ultimately, the HSC.  Of course, a vital part of this success is the role played by parents in supporting students’ learning. For this, I must pass on the thanks of the school to all of our parents for the supportive structures and environments provided at home. We are indeed fortunate to have such a highly regarded partnership that works so well for our students.    

Best Wishes to Year 11. Not to be forgotten, our Year 11 students move in to a week of assessment tasks and examinations. These tasks were always in each faculty’s plans and timetables, however, we have decided to condense them into a week‐long period to replicate the examination timetable structure that they will experience from now to the time of their HSC. While students will be required to sit for each task as part of their course work, just as valuable a learning experience is moving in to the hall, being seated according to Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) enrolment numbers and completing tasks under examination conditions with invigilators supervising the process. The more we do this in the lead up to the HSC, the more the process will be demystified and, hopefully, the more comfortable students will become.

From the Deputy Principals This week, I had the joy of speaking to over 50 of our Year 12 students as they reflected on their HSC progress and discussed options and aspirations for life after the HSC. The maturity of the discussions, honesty of the self‐reflections and evidence of personal best from the students were most impressive. Thank you to Ms Rixon, Ms Shannon and Mr Rudd for assisting with the interviews.   The ‘interview week’ culminated on Thursday evening with Year 12 parent / teacher night. Thank you goes to all those who attended the evening and for all parents and caregivers for their ongoing support of our wonderful Year 12 students.   Year 10 students and parents are reminded that the Year 11 2017 subject choices are due by next Tuesday 24 May. Although slight changes to choices can be made after this date, please ensure your choices are in priority order so that the 2017 timetable can best meet the needs of our students. Thank you to the teaching staff who were available to answer questions on the night and to the office staff for assisting with the preparations behind the scenes.   Year 8 Technology students have been cooking up a storm this week, preparing their dishes for the Food Critics assessment task. Congratulations to all our budding master chefs for their planning, preparation and creative endeavours.   Save the date: Year 12 Music students will be performing some of their HSC pieces on Tuesday 31 May from 6pm in the Hall. Please come along 

and enjoy their impressive performances.  This is also a fund‐raising event, with proceeds from the gold coin donation entry and supper provided during the interval going to Headspace.

Deputy Principal Years 8, 10, 12 ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐  ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ 

 On Monday, the Vocal Ensemble participated in a Masterclass with Ben Loomes in preparation for the Northern Beaches Eisteddfod. NBSC Manly Campus is the only public school competing in the Eisteddfod and we wish them the best of luck.  The Year 11 Half Yearly Examinations commenced this week and will continue all of next week. Year 11 does not attend normal classes during this week; however, they must be in full school uniform for the examinations.  I encourage Year 11 students to make use of the library during this period especially the extended library hours on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.  Illness and Misadventure Reminder: If you are ill, delayed, or cannot attend the examination, you must telephone the school on 99053982. A doctor’s certificate must be obtained for illness and you will be required to sit the missed examination on the first day you return to school or as directed by the Deputy Principal. On return to school an Illness and Misadventure form must be completed and doctor’s certificate for the day of the examination attached. If the examination cannot be completed during the examination period, an estimated mark may be used.  I am very excited to announce the launch of ReachOut Parents ‐  https://parents.au.reachout.com/   Right now, 1 in 4 young Australians are living with a mental health difficulty. But there’s an even bigger problem: 70% of those who need help don’t get it. The good news: we can change this. The majority of mental health difficulties start before the age of 24, and we know that parents are one of the first places that young people turn to for support and information. ReachOut Parents is made up of fact sheets, stories, practical tips and tools covering a range of topics, issues and experiences that are relevant to teenagers aged 12–18 years. There’s also an online community forum where parents can talk to other parents about their experiences and work through concerns in a safe, anonymous environment.  

The aim of ReachOut Parents is to help parents: 

develop and maintain secure and stable 

relationships with their teenagers by learning 

more about what they might be experiencing 

or issues they might be going through 

support their teenager and teach them how to 

seek help and work through issues 

independently 

learn about mental health issues that often 

have their onset during adolescence, including 

what to be aware of, and how parents can get 

help for their teenager if and when they need 

it 

improve the wellbeing and resilience of 

families.

Canteen News Canteen Roster Coordinator Needed The Canteen Committee is looking for a volunteer to take over the canteen roster coordinator role from the middle of the year. We would like to find someone within the current Year 7, 8 or 9 parents who has some familiarity with the way the canteen and canteen roster works and who is likely to be at the school for the next few years. However, this is not a pre‐requisite – offers from other years are also welcome!  The skills required for this role includes experience with excel spreadsheets and group emails, plus some logical/organisational skills. The main time commitment is at the beginning of the year entering new volunteer details into an excel spreadsheet, arranging the volunteers into the annual roster (also in excel) in consultation with Mel and Brenda, and emailing the draft roster to the volunteers. There is also time at the end of each term when volunteers get the opportunity to request alternative shifts (via email) before the commencement of the new term, requiring some further rearrangement of the roster. Once the term starts volunteers organise their own swaps and Mel manages any day to day changes, so the coordinator’s input becomes minimal.

From the Archives Every week we will bring you an item from a past issue of the yearly Pines Magazine. In 1969, Sport, as usual, figures prominently in the school culture. In a 49 page magazine, 20 of those pages are devoted to sports reports. Apart from the usual athletics, swimming and cross country, there are team reports on cricket, basketball, rowing, waterpolo, tennis, squash, rugby union and soccer. In this issue we give you some snippets from various sports reports.  Athletic Carnival This year’s school athletic carnival saw many changes from previous years …. and proved very successful. For the first time the carnival was organised and run by the senior pupils. … Because the carnival was student run the teachers were left free to relax and enjoy themselves at the staff barbecue. The carnival, and the House rivalry, began with the March Past which was held for the first time, being won by Phillip  And in a later article ….  The day began with a house march past. This was a very colourful display with the boys dressed in their house colours and marching behind their house flag …. first place went to Phillip House who looked very impressive in their yellow athletic singlets.  Swimming Carnival Attendance at this year’s swimming carnival seemed to vary according to form, the fraction of boys present being roughly the reciprocal of that form. For example, all of First Form turned up, a half of Second Form, a quarter of Fourth Form, and so on. But in Sixth Form the maths went haywire, and unless ten is a sixth of one hundred, the system of proportions collapsed completely. (The interesting news is that seniors are to run the athletic carnival late this year). It was unfortunate that the proposed caps in house colours were not ready for the carnival, as they would have added interest to the proceedings. The only real enthusiasm seemed to come from Phillip House who, thanks to Mr Gee, bellowed their war cry at every opportunity (though admittedly opportunities were few). … Chris Meakin provided the best individual effort, breaking four school records during the day. As far as Zone chances go Manly looks like having the 14 years category sewn 

Vaccination Reminder  

Year 7 students and parents are reminded of the upcoming vaccination visit on Monday, 30 May (Week 6).  Nurses will be providing the second Gardasil/HPV vaccination, plus the Diphtheria‐Tetanus‐Pertussis vaccination to students.   Please contact Kate Munro at kate.munro15@det.nsw.edu.au with any questions or concerns.  

up, but just fielding a senior team seems well nigh impossible.  EDITOR’S NOTE: Manly finished a close second to Narrabeen in the Zone Swimming Carnival held at the North Sydney Olympic Pool. In other sports Grade Zone results, Manly were Champions in all grades in both rugby and soccer, and second in tennis. Some rounds were still to be played at the time of publication of the magazine, but the school was quietly confident of also winning their competitions in cricket, basketball, waterpolo and squash.

parents and hear what is coming up for band.   Band Fundraiser: Sydney Half Marathon ‐Thank you 

Twenty seven MSC Years 7‐8 band parents and children volunteers turned up at Hyde Park for a 4.45am start last Sunday 15 May for gear drop/collection duties for the SMH Half Marathon. We quickly learned what was expected of us and wrote down bib numbers on coloured plastic tie bags and placed them in numerical order for collection after the runners had finished their 21km run around the city. Though it was an early start, everyone said it was fun and good for the kids who got right into the spirit of the day looking after the runners. We raised over $700 to put towards the next overseas band tour for the current Year 7‐9 students.            A big thank you to all students and parents who took part and especially Michelle Hackney for organising the group so well.  

Year 12 Music Performance Night: Tuesday 31 May, SE and CO String Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra will be performing at the Year 12 Music Performance night to support Alex Young with two of his HSC pieces. The concert features HSC music students from the school. This night will raise funds for Headspace and is open to everyone to attend. Starts 6pm at MSC hall.  SE and CO to arrive 7pm.   Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival: Pittwater High, Mona Vale Families and friends are encouraged to attend the festival events. Small entry fee. Friday 17 June for CB.

Dr Matthew Bourke (D.C.) is a Chiropractor, Applied Kinesiologist and certified Neuro Emotional Technique practitioner. He is the Director and founder of Optimum Health Essentials in Mona Vale and has been in clinical practice for 19 years. Matthew has been a clinical Board Member and

presenter with the Mindd foundation since 2008 and has studied Peak Performance and Positive Psychology at Sydney University.
