School life is already busy at Glenala with many opportunitieson offer for all students. In four weeks we have already hadschool photographs, two academic/leadership assemblies, sporting trials and the offer to students to join activities such asdebating, chess, cultural and student council. I encourage allstudents to participate fully in school life. The benefits of feelingconnected, valued and engaged in school life are significant.

I also encourage parents/carers to involve themselves in theacademic life of their student/s. By this week assessment itemswill be due. An assessment planner for the year will be outto students by this time. Please check your child’s StudentPlanner for homework and other information. It is also a greatway to communicate with teachers.

We welcomed 14 new staff this year and a list of their namesand departments has been published in this edition of thegazette. A list of Administration, Middle Management and YearCo-ordinators follows my article.

I hope you enjoy reading the first edition of the Glenala Gazetteand again a warm welcome back to the 2019 school year.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALWelcome to all of our new and continuing students and families. We are off to a great start this year with increased enrolmentsand many new staff in the school. A particular welcome to our170 Year 7 students. The increased enrolments in Year 7 havemeant that we have had to create a new class for the extrastudents. This commenced at the start of Week 5, 25 February.

Timetable changes

We have been able to access extra staffing and other resourcesto support our students this year, and some changes weremade to student timetables at the start of Week 5 to reduceclass sizes and target support where it is needed. Glenalastudents now have the advantage of being in small classesacross the school with more opportunity for support from theirteachers.

Uniforms

Congratulations to parents on the effort that has been made topresent your student in the school uniform this year. The veryhigh standard has been noticeable on school Assemblies and atour recent school photograph day. A reminder to parents thatstudents are permitted to wear the Sports uniform only on dayswhen they have HPE practical classes (not during theory units)or Dance subjects. On other days, they are to wear the formaluniform to school.

ATAR Laptops

Students in Year 11 who are studying arange of ATAR General subjects need tohave a laptop computer as part of therequired resources for these subjects. Thiswas made clear during the SET Planningprocess last year. Students can either “bring their own” or hireone from the school. If you wish to hire a school laptop andhave not done so yet, please make arrangements to do this assoon as possible. Payment plans are available through theschool Office if you wish to avail yourself of this option.

Traffic

Glenala Road is particularly busy between 3:00pm and 3:15pm.A reminder that parents must not stop beside the yellow lineson the road. There are limited pick up areas and it would bebeneficial to arrange to collect your student on Hampton St,Altola St or Akama Rd to avoid traffic congestion and enhancesafety.

Year 7

We have had a brilliant start to the year with our new Year 7Cohort. Our students have engaged well with curriculum andwith our processes here at Glenala State High School. Thisyear has seen our biggest group of students to attend theschool, with 170 students now forming a massive eight That’sLife classes from 7A to 7H. I would like to thank our amazinggroup of teachers for a great start to the year and forcontinuing their great work from last year with our PEPprogram. I would also like to welcome Ms Ruth Crocombewho has joined us this week to take our newly combined 7Hclass. Last week our students are heading to the Planetariumfor a Science excursion. This was a great opportunity for ourstudents to get hands on with the work they are completing inclass. The lines of communication are always open here atGlenala and if you wish to speak to me regarding your child’sschooling or welfare, feel free to call the school or email me [email protected].

Next week we are starting a 5-weekPEP workshop with an outside company presenting theprogram, ‘Study Sensei’. This workshop will aid students inbeing productive with their studies and giving them some studytips.

Recently we celebrated the success of a number of studentswho received GEMs, which recognised their academicachievement from Semester 2, 2018. I look forward tocelebrating more success throughout 2019.

Year 9

There is a lot to look forward to this year for our Year 9 cohort. They include NAPLAN, Subject Selection as well as manyextracurricular activities. We have a fantastic group of JuniorSecondary leaders who were inducted at our recent GEMassembly. These students have attended the GRIP leadershipconference with our senior school leaders to continue todevelop their leadership skills.

We will have a subject selection evening in Term 4 as wetransition our students from leaders of the junior school tomembers of the senior school in 2020. This means thatstudents need to be responsible for themselves in terms of theiruniform, explaining absences and being prepared for learningevery day. Students have been working on their study skills inTerm 1 and this will hopefully give them a number of strategiesto help them achieve success this year. Forming good studyhabits will be vital for our students with the new ATAR pathwaythat awaits them in Years 11 and 12.

Recently we celebrated the success of a number of studentswho received GEMs, which recognise their academicachievement from Semester 2, 2018. I look forward tocelebrating more success throughout 2019.

Year 10

Year 10 students have made a strong and positive start to2019, adapting quickly to life in the senior school. As Year 10co-ordinator, I am proud to see them face the many challengesthat a new system can pose with perseverance andcommitment to learning. Our PEP program this year will befocused on preparing them for the very important SET planprocess in Term 3, where students will select the final pathwaysin their senior schooling journey. There is a focus on goal settingand post schooling options and pathways, as well subjectssuch as safe technology use, respectful relationships and studyskills. The end goal for students at the completion of the year isto develop the skills and character required for success in anyavenue they feel best suited to. It is never too early for parentsand carers to have discussions with students asking, “What isyour plan” so that together we can support your student topursue whichever pathway they choose to follow.

SENIOR SCHOOLINGI am very pleased with the Senior School data released inDecember 2018. The highlight being, 100% of our 2018 Year12 students gained QCE’s. Students who applied for tertiarystudies through QTAC were offered a spot with only twostudents not taking the offer.

Contact has been made with all 2018 school leavers fromlast year and it’s pleasing to report that most non universitybound students are either engaged in other studies for examplecompleting Cert III courses at TAFE or engaged in the GETSET READY for Work programs. Others have also securedemployment through opportunities they engaged in whilst atschool or just were successful in applying for advertised jobs.A large number of students are also attending courses offeredby RTO’s. Three students who completed their Cert II inAutomotive Vocational Pathways also secured apprenticeships.

Overall, so far 2018 school leavers seem to be on track toachieve their personal and career goals and I congratulate eachone of them with this.

Glenala SHS again has put forward students in the EducationDepartments School plus VET equals Employment (SVETE)programs. Known often as the “8”programs, they are designedto create pathways to employment for students. Theseprograms are only available to Year 12 students. Glenala hasone student in the STYL8 program, one in CULTIV8, and one inACCELR8 this year. Students will be completing their programs

• Find the right place and time - Some people findthey work best in the morning, some in the afternoon, and others find evening is their ideal time. You alsoneed to experiment with level of noise. You may findthat a quiet room is best, or you may prefer somemusic playing.

• Get organised - Even if you’re not very keen onplanning, it’s well worth sitting down and looking atyour deadlines to make sure that you’re able tomanage the work in time.

• Take regular breaks - Reward yourself forconcentrated work by taking a short break everyhour or two: go and get a drink, or check your email,or something. But be disciplined about how long yourbreak lasts.

• Go over your work regularly - Our memories workin two ways: short-term and long-term. When youfirst learn something, it is generally stored in yourshort-term memory, where it has a strict ‘shelf life’. Ifyou keep reading and reviewing that idea or piece ofinformation, it will be transferred to your long-termmemory, and can be accessed indefinitely.

• Ask for help when you need it - When you’re atschool, teachers are trained to assess who isstruggling and offer them extra help. But once you’restudying independently, the only one who is going toassess whether you can cope is you.

JUNIOR SECONDARYWhat a fantastic start to 2019 it has been in Junior Secondary! Our Year 7, 8 and 9 students have come back to school afterthe summer break, refreshed and eager to learn. It has beenmost pleasing to see the efforts that parents have made toensure that their child is in the correct uniform, with notepads, writing equipment and lunch to ensure a successful start to theschool year.

It is wonderful to see our new Year 7 cohort of 168 students(our largest ever) adapt to high school life so seamlessly. Theyhave been enthusiastic in the classroom and playground, although they are missing some of their Primary schoolteachers. Below are some reflections from our Year 7 Esteamstudents:

“I have had a great start at Glenala SHS and I havea great class with a great teacher. Her name is MissHickey. I have been given the opportunity to join a rangeof extra-curricular activities and have joined the mediaarts club and the basketball team. Glenala allows us toset goals in each of our classes and I have set somechallenging goals, especially for our E-Steam class.

I was very nervous before the first day of high school butwhen I got there all of nerves went away when I sawmy friends and some of the teachers that I met on ourorientation day.

I get to experience a range of classes, from English andMaths to the Arts and Technology. We have a writingfocus here at school and we are learning all about thedifferent sentence and paragraph types we can use whenwriting. Soon we will be getting a new building that I hopewe can do our science lessons in. “ (Kanish Kanish,Richlands East SS)

“Before high school had started I was very nervousbecause I was going to a new school where I didn’t knowanyone apart from my very few friends going to Glenala. However, I was excited at the same time, as I could notwait to meet new people and make new friends.

While I was settling into high school, I have found manythings I like about it like the lunch breaks, the canteenand my new friends I have made in the first week. Inhigh school, many things are different, for example, everyclass we have we have either a different teacher or adifferent classroom we have to go to. The lunchbreaksare also different as we can choose to either eat or playwhenever we want. “ (Alan Nguyen, Durack SS)

“After the holidays, the school year had finally come. Iwas so nervous walking to school, and settling into highschool was even harder for me. I did not know what toexpect from the high school, teachers and friends. It washard for me to know where all the classes were but theteachers were nice enough to help and guide me throughmy problems. I realised that high school is much differentfrom primary school. We have to move from this class tothe other one by ourselves and we need to know how tomanage our time better so we will not be late for classes. We have to organise our lunch and play time so that wecan do both in a short period of time, and the things Ireally like to do is that we carry all of our books in ourbag and before school day we check the timetable andget what books we need for the next day. Doing all thesethings make me feel a lot more responsible and now Iknow how to manage my time much better.”

“Primary school prepared me very well for high school. Iam now brave enough to ask questions. In two weeks ofschool I have learnt a lot from my teachers and friends.I was lucky enough to find out that I am in the Esteamclass, which means throughout the year I will have todo my best to keep up with my grades. I learnt a lotabout English and trying to improve my writing as wellas my Grammar. In high school my favourite subjects areHistory and Maths.” (Phuong Trang, Inala SS)

New School Based Youth Health Nurse atGlenala

Hi, and welcome back to another year! My name is AlaynaPatterson and I am the Youth Health Nurse allocated to GlenalaState High School. My office is in J Block with support servicesteam and my workdays here are Mondays & Fridays.

The School Based Youth Health Service is part of Children’sHealth Queensland, Child & Youth Community Health Service. It is best to describe the role as a preventative rather thantreatment focussed care role. Youth Health Nurses promotepositive health outcomes by providing evidence based earlyinterventions, harm minimisation and brief intervention/earlydetection.

Young people have the right to access confidential healthservices, so as a health service provider, I respect that right andmost of the discussions between myself and them will remainconfidential. There may be times that I must refer or act onsome issues, because as a Registered Nurse, I do have a “Dutyof Care” to keep young people safe.

The things that I see young people about include, but are notlimited to:

If throughout the year, you have a young person who maybenefit from our service, please send a referral through yournormal school support service referral pathways (Please ensurethat you let the student know that the referral you are makingmay go to the school based youth health nurse) or students canself-refer to our service.

The other part of our role in schools is to help create a healthyschool community. Youth Health nurses can work with thewhole school community on a range of issues that can affectthe health and wellbeing of young people, and the schoolcommunity.

This includes:

ELEVATE – Study Sessions

Students in Year 10 and 11 have participated in an ELEVATEeducation Study Sensei and Time Management workshops aspart of their Personal Education Program. ELEVATE educationare a company that provide seminars and workshops to helpstudents improve their study techniques, increase motivation, build confidence, and lift exam performance. They currentlywork with over 1500 schools and 350,000 students in the UK,USA, South Africa and Singapore.

Having participated in these sessions our Year 10 and Year 11students should have an array of new strategies and skills toimprove their learning and study habits. Over 93% students inYear 10 and 11 stated that these study skills sessions were timewell spent. Here is some of the feedback from our students:

During the program, I learned how tospend less time trying to revise andprepare for an exam or assessment. The skills that we learned showed ushow to use our criteria sheetsappropriately, the right amount oftime to revise and how to correctlytake efficient and useful notes. All the

skills that I learnt during the program will help me spendless time revising and more time on being able toremember the necessary notes and information needed. Iwill be able to take more useful and shorter notes insteadof trying to write everything down and having toremember it all. Felicity Pritchard Year 10

Yesterday I got to meet a specialguest from ELEVATE education. Itwas an amazing experience and I amglad that I got the opportunity to betaught key tips to making my schoollife easier. I walked away with manyideas of how to Learn, Master andCreate using key points / rules. The

key points mainly talked about were using criteria sheets, being able to create notes throughout the term, start touse folders, paying attention to space and colour, whichhonestly were things I would never have considereddoing. Ulata Moananu Year 10

ELEVATE is a study program thathelps teenagers all over Australia, inschool, receive the best grades thatthey can. The 70 minutes that thepeople of ELEVATE spent workingwith us around various study skills, really set a clearer mindset for me. Ithelped me understand the

importance of balancing homework and assignmentswith my other priorities. One strategy they taught usduring study time was to focus on the task itself ratherthan the time it was taking to get through the work.Without a doubt the study skills session was definitelyhelpful in improving the way that I study. ELEVATE Education inspires studentsto study and end the common cycleof procrastination. Encouragingstudents to adopt different forms ofstudy assists students in achievingthe best possible results they can. With relatable presenters, theprogram provided Year 11 Glenala

students with the habits of how top students maintaintheir marks. Through time management skills, thepresenter urged students to find time, prioritise, reduceworkloads and do the work for the best possible results.Additionally, students were able to produce timetables oftheir weeks, allocating different times for different events, regarding our school and personal lives. The ELEVATEprogram positioned me to balance life with schoolwork, while increasing my confidence, building my motivation tostudy and elevating my overall exam performance. Theprogram really helped!
