From the Principal Wattle Day National Wattle Day is celebrated throughout Australia on the 1st September each year. It gives us a chance to demonstrate our collective pride in all things Australian. It is a celebration of our National Floral Emblem, the golden wattle, and the preservation of our natural environment. Each year on the 1st September, the children at Wattle Grove Primary School create a range of activities to learn and promote this beautiful flower which forms part of our school logo, the colours of our school uniform and the name of our school and suburb. This year, many classes made beautiful Wattle Day cards which they were to deliver to Wattle Grove residents on a neighbourhood walk. Unfortunately, due to the wet weather they were unable to deliver their cards on Wattle Day but will be doing their walk when the weather fines up next week. The Year 6 Student Representatives also greeted everyone at the school gates and presented them with small sprigs of wattle. Wattle welcomes in the spring and is among the first plants to regenerate after fire. It has great diversity (with more than 1000 species) and resilience like our people. As residents in Wattle Grove, we hope you all enjoyed your Wattle Day! P&C Thank You Each year, our P&C provides the school with great support and, in doing so, funds a significant amount of school resources. At last weeks P&C Meeting, the P&C approved $50 000 in expenditure for the purchase of a range of resources for the children to use. Included in this list were $18 000 of new ipads and trolley, a new Yamaha piano, new reading books, sports marquees and $10 000 towards the next phase of our Nature Playground. Each one of these items is a great boost to the learning teach and environment in our school. On behalf of all the staff and children of our school, we thank the P&C and the dedicated parent volunteers who organise all the fundraisers. Many thanks also to our school community who continue to support each fundraiser which, in turn, supports our school. School Board Awards – Term 3 Each term, the School Board presents an Award of Commendation to acknowledge the wonderful achievements and service of individual staff members and volunteer parents and/or community members working within our school. This is a wonderful initiative and recognises people in and around our school who help make Wattle Grove Primary the wonderful school that it is. I encourage you all to submit a nomination. There are 4 major areas: - Demonstrating Excellence in Teaching and Learning (Staff Award) Making a significant difference to individual student/s (Staff Award) Outstanding service to the school community (Parent/Community Award) Outstanding commitment to volunteering in the school (Parent/ Community Award) Nominations are sought from parents and staff for this term, with the School Board selecting two award winners who will be presented with their Award at the first assembly in Term 4. Deputy Principal Corner Research suggests children begin to develop their road safety awareness as young as three years of age. Developing positive attitudes and behaviours towards road safety will help you to keep your child safe around roads especially before and after school for drop off. There are many things that you can do to develop your child’s road safety awareness: • Model correct behaviours and explain to your child the purpose of stopping before crossing, looking left and right and listening for cars which may be approaching from around a corner. • Encourage your child to be vigilant when crossing driveways. • Be aware of your child as well as other children. • Encourage walking or riding to school. • Discuss the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bicycle or scooter to school. • Plan your trip so you arrive with time spare in case you have to walk. • Always endeavour to park a vehicle so children can enter or exit at the kerb and ensure your vehicle is facing the same way as the direction of traffic flow. Drive, park and behave responsibly – saving a couple of minutes is not worth the risk.

Tomorrow is our Faction Carnival which is going to be held at Dawson Park Primary School. Students will be transported to the carnival on the bus. Students MUST return to school on the bus and can not be taken home from Dawson Park Primary School. A Carnival program was emailed to parents earlier this week. It will be a fun filled day and we look forward to celebrating with the winning faction.

Diligence Diligence is working hard and doing the best job you possibly can. When you are diligent, you take special care to do things step by step. You think and move carefully to make sure things will turn out right. Being diligent is being industrious, giving all you have to give to whatever you do. You are practising diligence when you ….

Pay attention to what you are doing. Do things carefully, step by step. Practise to the point of excellence. Work hard. Don’t give up.

Gratitude The value of Gratitude is one which we continue to focus on with the children as it is often found to be sad-ly lacking in today’s society. Gratitude is focusing on people, things and special moments that we have right now. We can practise gratitude by noticing and pointing out the positives that exist around us and we have so many wonderful things to be grateful for. Being thankful for the things, places and people in our lives, no matter what our circumstances. Each day, we need to model and remind our children of the little things in life to be grateful for. This can be as simple as having a warm classroom to be in or some lovely pencils/books to use. I am extremely grateful to be able to come to our school every day and share the day with so many amazing people- big and little. What are you grateful for?

Best wishes to all the Wattle Grove Dads for their special day on Sunday

This past week, Room 11, 17 and 25 had an assembly about PEMDAS. For our wow writing, our classes had written an ANZAC recount letter as if we were all in World War 1. For our assembly we wore 90’s grunge outfits. We practiced for our assembly only about one week but we had a lot of fun. Some students got a chance to speak but some unfortunately didn’t. We sang a rap about PEMDAS and it helped us learn more about the order of operations. P stands for parenthesis or brackets E stands for exponents or indices M stands for multiplication D stands for division A stands for addition S stands for subtraction If you want to listen to this rap, click this hyperlink. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzeDWFhYv3Ehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzeDWFhYv3E Since we are all year sixes, this will be our last assembly that we can host so who ever watched our assembly, we hope you enjoyed it

JUNIOR ASSEMBLY

Room 2 and 9 Room 2 and Room 3 hosted their Tokyo Olympics assembly last Friday. Many gold medals were awarded! We sang a song about the Olympics. Did you know the first Olympics was held nearly 3000 years ago? We would like to congratulate all the students on their efforts to learn their lines and their wonderful speaking with the micro-phone. Thanks to all the parents for their support and help with costumes. A special thanks to Mrs Foggarty and Mrs Eaves for our displays. See you in Paris 2024.

ITALIAN Cosa sta succedendo in Italiano? (What is happening in Italian?). Firstly, thank you to all the parents, friends and family members who attended the Italian assembly in Week One. Signora Queiros and I were thrilled to see many, many weeks of rehearsal coming together for a delightful display that not only showcased the beautiful Italian language, but also, what talented singers we have here at Wattle Grove. A very special thank you goes to the children selected to speak at the assembly: Gracie (Year 1); Shivani (Year 2); Veera (Year 3); Kabilan (Year 4); Nadia, Danny, Olivia and Gazal (Year 6). They spoke with confidence, clarity and beautiful pronunciation. Outstanding! Perhaps the highlight of the assembly was the more than 400 students that came together to sing the Israel Kamakawiwo’Ole’s version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World all in Italian. Era gioioso (it was joyful)! Term 3 is another busy term. Year 1s are learning the vocabulary for Oggetti dell’astuccio (items of the pencil case) and Year 2s are very excited to be engaged in a unit on Il Piccolo Bruco Maisazio (The Little Hungry Caterpillar); Year 3s have been introduced to a beautiful, new literary text La Nonna e Gli Occhiali (The grandmother and the glasses); Year 4s are continuing with a unit on Sports, including comparing the achievements of the Italian and Australian Olympic teams, and Years 5 and 6 are working extremely hard on a unit of work that will culminate in them writing their own short musical resume, including any instruments they may play, the types of music they like to listen to, whether or not they can sing and read music, etc. Buona settimana a tutti (Have a good week everyone) Signora Isaia

PARENT HANDBOOK INFORMATION

BOOK WEEK

Notes to parents are distributed by the classroom teachers to the eldest child of the family. Parents who require extra copies are asked to see the office staff. The School Website www.wattlegroveps.wa.edu.au contains a wide range of information for parents. The School Newsletter, ‘The Wattle’ is distributed fortnightly by email to all parents. It is therefore important to keep us advised of your current email address. The Newsletter is also available on the School Website and App. The school has a School App which is available free to download at the App Store (for Apple and Android phones) – search – Wattle Grove Primary School. The App is a useful tool that allows parents to notify us of ab-sentees, change student details and to receive up to date communication.

INFORMATION TO PARENTS

LIBRARY RESOURCE CENTRE

LOST PROPERTY

All children visit the library to borrow books, which need to be returned the following week. In order to protect the books, all children are required to have a library bag with their name clearly labelled on it. Library bags are available through the School Uniform Co-ordinator.

All lost property is taken to the Lost Property Box located outside of the Library. If there are names on the items, we endeavour to return them to the students. Parents are asked to ensure that all of their child’s cloth-ing, lunch boxes, drink bottles and belongings are clearly labelled to avoid unnecessary loss.

NOTICES

2021 is a significant year in the history of Lesmurdie Senior High School as we celebrate 40 years of public education. Over the past 40 years we have seen our school grow into an icon of the Hills community providing education to thousands of young people and support to their families. We are pleased to invite you to join us in celebrating this milestone by attending our Celebration Day on Saturday 16 October 2021 from 11.00 am – 4.00 pm. This will be a wonderful opportunity for past students, staff and community members to join us in reminiscing the past 40 years and welcoming the future. The official welcome delivered by our School Principal Mrs Kerry Chipchase and invited guests and dignitaries will occur at 12.00 pm in the Corral and will include the unveiling of our 40th Anniversary mural. The Celebration Day will showcase the talents of our current and past students through music and drama performances and allow the community an opportunity to walk around the school and explore our beautiful campus. Learning Areas will host demonstrations and displays of their learning experiences. Food and refreshments will be available to purchase from our Italian and Hospitality students and staff, as well as various local food trucks. Stay tuned for a more detailed outline of the day’s events. We would love to see loads of past students, staff and community members at our celebration so spread the word. Let us know you will be joining us by registering at Eventbrite: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/lesmurdie-senior-high-school-tickets-166021271091
