T hanks to everyone who has contributed to making this year
BETTER! I am winding down my term as president and want to
thank all of the grass roots volunteers that have helped out. It
has truly been an honor and pleasure serving you this year as president.
Some highlights from this year include hitting our chapter record
meeting attendance of 91 people (controls panel discussion), adding the
Top Golf event, restarting ASHRAE University, having ASHRAE
President David Underwood visit us for our Chapter’s 60th Anniversary,
and many others.
We recently completed the Annual ASHRAE Bowling Tournament at the Westgate Lanes. We
had (11) five man teams competing and EEA Consulting Engineers took first place. Congrats!
We netted $1,200+ for ASHRAE RP. Huge shout out to Mark Mikulin for organizing the event.
I would like to give a huge thank you to Jeremy Smith and Morgan Stinson for making ASHRAE
Austin BETTER! They invested a lot of personal time into our second semester of ASHRAE
University to teach engineers and contractors the Fundamentals of Airside Design. The event
was a success with 35+ students for the four week course. We intend on hosting another session
for the fall semester and hope to make this a continual program for years to come.
We are coming back to the County Line to wrap up our great line of programs this year. Please join
us for BBQ & Beer at our May 19th Chapter Dinner Meeting at The County Line on the Hill. This
next meeting topic is on Natatorium HVAC design and will discuss specific design issues including
dew point, evaporation rate, energy consideration, condensation control, moisture migration
control, design responsibility, IAQ, air distribution, duct design, and heat recovery.
I am excited to announce that I will be moving on to a Regional Position (Refrigeration Chair), but
I will still be active at the chapter level as RP Chair for next year. I believe that we have set some
great ground work in future planning for the chapter chairs and I confident that next year will be
even BETTER! Please help support our local Austin ASHRAE Chapter by volunteering for next year.

Collegiate News
The UT-Austin Student Branch activities have concluded for the year. Thank you to all the volunteers for making this a great year. K-12/STEM News
The last K-12 event of the year is the Central Texas Discover Engineering Week. This event encourages Central Texas school chil-dren to pursue technology careers by promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through classroom visits. Steve Hansen & Vanessa Maryott have volunteered for this event. They will be at Lamar Middle School presenting to six (6) eighth grade classes. They would like to have additional volunteers, at least one (1) per class. Let’s NOT let them down. PLEASE consider helping with one of these. You can contact us to assist. Steve Hansen; [email protected] Vanessa Maryott; [email protected] Gayle Davis; [email protected]
The Austin Chapter will qualify for the K-12/STEM Chapter Leadership Award! The K-12/STEM Chapter Leadership Award requires K-12 activity involvement by every Chapter Officer (i.e. President, President-Elect, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary) and the SA Chair. The award is presented annually to qualifying Chapters. Chapters are also recognized in an Insights article. First time award recip-ients will receive a patch with the ASHRAE logo and a pin with the year the award was earned.

GRASSROOTS GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS UPDATE
T he Texas 85th Legislature will be called into seesion on Jan. 10, 2017 and end on May 29, 2017. My goal in 2017 is to do a “Day on the Hill” during this session. Anyone who would be willing to help me pull this off please contact me. I will be working with all the chapters in the state. It will be a
huge undertaking-but one that I think will be fun and beneficial for us all. Thanks in advance for helping make the 2017 Day on the Hill a reality.
