TOS Newsletter December 2018 Orchid Colleagues, I can’t believe how quickly this year has gone. I just got used to writing 2018! So as the year rapidly comes to the end it is natural to reminisce what we did over the past year. From outstanding monthly speakers to a vibrant new member education program and great greenhouse field trips our society had a terrific orchid year. Just two weeks ago we had our annual end of the year Awards Banquet. It has consistently been a very pleasant way to celebrate the holidays with our orchid society friends. A heart felt thank you to all our members who made this year’s event possible. Dori Iwanowski deserves special recognition for all the hard work she did organizing our banquet. And the Cattleya blooms Plato Mathews provided for the center pieces that Patsy Temple fabricated out of glass were outstanding. So if you didn’t go this year plan to go next year. As fun as one banquet can be it does not make the entire year worthwhile. In total all our meetings, auctions and social events such as our picnic create the mosaic of a successful year. Add to our TOS events the wonderful Merritt Huntington Symposium that was held at Founders Inn this fall and 2018 was special. Dave and Joanne Bryan have been instrumental in organizing this standalone event over the past ten plus years. All our officers, trustees, committees and volunteers deserve our thank you for making 2018 the great orchid year it was. But really all our society members made the year special for me. Orchid Colleagues,

I can’t believe how quickly this year has gone. I just got used to writing 2018! So as the year rapidly comes to the end it is natural to reminisce what we did over the past year. From outstanding monthly speakers to a vibrant new member education program and great greenhouse field trips our society had a terrific orchid year. Reminders orchid knowledge whether a novice grower or an AOS Judge causes me to look forward to each meeting. Because of you I increase my orchid knowledge each meeting…thank you!

As good as 2018 has been I expect 2019 to be better. We will continue to have outstanding monthly speakers and we look forward to additional field trips to growers. The end of the year picnic is always a great way to welcome summer. And not to be forgotten is what promises to be the signature event of the year in the Kaplan Lecture sponsored by the Dalis Foundation during the Norfolk Botanical Garden’s Orchid Show this coming March. And there is always room for an auction or two. We can never have too many orchids in our grow spaces.

Finally, I need to pass along information that our host facility the Norfolk Botanical Garden recently provided to us indicating the Garden’s intent to go plastic free in 2019. It is there attempt to reduce plastics from getting into our water ways. This new requirement affects all party caterers and clubs who use the Garden’s facilities. So, if you are bringing in refreshments to share please employ reusable containers thus avoiding anything disposable including Styrofoam cups and plastic utensils. A few years ago I remember reading a bumper sticker encouraging us to “Think Globally…Act Locally”. The Garden is acting locally and for this we should all offer them a tip of the hat. We all can help Mother Nature in this small way.

To all our society members and friends; have a great Christmas and fantastic New Year. See you all in 2019!

From the President – cont’d

Biography – Francisco Miranda

Francisco Miranda was born in Rio de Janeiro. He got his degree in Biology and begun his taxonomic studies in the orchid family in 1981. During the next 4 years, he studied Amazon orchids and began his Master’s degree. Shortly after returning to Rio de Janeiro, the Master’s was completed on “section Cattleyodes of the genus Laelia”. Since then, the main interest has been on Brazilian laelias and cattleyas. He is the author of several papers ranging from species descriptions to subjects of growers’ interest in Brazilian, German and U.S. publications. He is also the author of two books. Since 2000, he has lived in Haines City, Florida, where he operates Miranda Orchids, an orchid nursery specializing in Brazilian species and the Cattleya alliance. He also guides trips to Brazil and frequently visits Brazilian habitats to find new and interesting orchid species.

Reduce Reuse Recycle Guidelines

Here at NBG our mission is to enrich life by promoting the enjoyment of plants and the environment through beautiful gardens and educational programs. The first objective of our strategic plan is to establish the Garden as a leader in environmental stewardship. As a “Virginia Green” attraction, we adhere to the comprehensive Reduce Reuse Recycle program mandated by Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. Our commitment to environmental sustainability focuses first and foremost on reducing waste. Secondary objectives include utilizing reusable items in lieu of disposables and to recycle all items that cannot be reused. We appreciate your support in this endeavor. Please feel free to contact us with any questions regarding compliance with the following guidelines.

♻As of Jan 1, 2019 all single-use plastics including but not limited to: disposable water bottles, straws (drinking and cocktail size), utensils, plates, cups, clamshell to-go food containers as well as all forms of Styrofoam are prohibited on campus for all rentals, meetings, group visits, weddings and events. Any form of containerized drinking water is not permitted.

♻Please make sure all of your servers, bartenders and kitchen staff are aware of NBG’s recycling policy and that they know where recycling bins and dumpsters are located.

♻Place recycling bins in kitchen, kitchen hallway and behind the bar. Servers and bartenders are responsible for clearing tables/bars of disposables/recyclables and placing them in the appropriate bins.

♻Caterers are responsible for transporting recyclables to the designated dumpster behind Baker Hall. All recycling must be collected in clear plastic bags only.

♻In addition to glass and plastic bottles, aluminum cans, etc., any cardboard should be broken down and placed in the designated cardboard recycling dumpster.

♻Caterers are required to use reusable dishes, glasses, utensils, and linens instead of disposable products. Where disposables are necessary only compostable/plant-based plastics, paper, bamboo or wood products are acceptable. For more information on approved, disposable products and where to buy them please contact us.

♻Recycling is not a choice at NBG. As a ‘green’ destination, we are committed to environmentally responsible practices.
