Bethpage / Parent Chapter

March 23, 2016

Wow, has our Chapter been lucky the past two months with fabulous weather on meeting day, warm 60-degree skies greeted the meeting goers in stark contrast to the dusting of snow two days earlier. Everyone enjoyed the meal. After the meal, the meeting was started with Sergeant-at-Arms Nick Bazzicalupo leading the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was then observed for our departed friends and for the well being of the men and women in the service of our country who fight and die for our freedom.

President Betty Bohlander introduced guest speaker Tony Rende, owner and President of Rendezvous Travel. Our Chapter worked with Tony a few years ago and is pleased to work with him again. Tony started his talk by reviewing his travel credentials back to 1978, when he started as a tour guide. He compared the travel then and now, highlighting the improvements in travel today. The discussion of tour logistics pointed out that a good trip combines with a restaurant visit. Tony only uses restaurants that provide good food, service to the public, are affordable to the traveler, and are places that Tony himself and his family would go to on their own.

Tony Rende, Betty Bohlander

When it comes to show travel, both Broadway and local, Rendezvous has obtained very exclusive seating areas providing comfort and optimum viewing. This all fits into his company motto, “Value oriented trips at a high level of customer service.” Rendezvous has all their trips summarized in the Rendezvous Travel Catalog (RTC flyer), which is published twice a year and it is available to all. Tony encouraged everyone to sign up for direct mailing of the catalog by calling his office or on line.

Nick Bazzicalupo, our Sergeant-at-Arms, works with Tony and will provide any and all liaison for Club travel. The successful trip to the Feast of St. Joseph on Staten Island the day before this meeting was highlighted as enjoyed by all the travelers.

After a brief Q&A, Tony was presented with a Retiree Club Medallion and a round of applause. Betty followed up by commenting that the trip to the Staten on March 22nd, organized by Nick Baz, was a thorough winner and enjoyed by all. Betty’s favorite part was the Italian comedian who impressed her so much that she repeated of few of his jokes and stories. We now have a replacement for Nick Baz at the monthly meeting if for some reason he can’t tell his joke of the month. Keep working on your delivery, Betty.

Betty announced the upcoming F-14 Tomcat Tribute and Reunion of F-14 workers, on April 21, at the Cradle of Aviation. The Cradle now is the home of F-14 Number 3. The evening includes a cocktail two-hours, followed by a dinner and a panel discussion.

The panel participants include Vice Admiral Walter “Ted” Carter, the Superintendent of the US Naval Academy; Mike Ciminera- former Assistant to the F-14 Vice President and Northrop Grumman VP; Hank Janiesch, former F-14 Program VP; Mike Rabens, former Top Gun Pilot and Northrop Grumman Director of Flight Tests; Dennis Romano, former Northrop Grumman VP and F-14 RIO; and Winston Scott, NASA astronaut and former F-14 pilot. Book a table for 10 people and receive a 15% discount on the per person price of $100.

Business: First VP Bob Ripp announced that, recently, the Club was informed that there is a notion floating about in some chapters that the Club Officers here in Bethpage are paid a salary and some wondered how much this compensation amounted to. Bob cleared up any and all unknown values by stating that the Officers receive ZERO pay. They always have not, and always will not, be paid. They, like all meeting attendees, pay for their monthly lunches and annual dues. All chapter Officers, both of the Parent Chapter and the Offsite Chapters, along with the Club Directors are VOLUNTEERS. The effort by all these dedicated individuals should be applauded, as their goal is only to serve you, the retiree, and preserve the memories of our Grumman/Northrop Grumman careers with, in many cases a sacrifice of both personal time and effort. Please remember, when and if you call into the Bethpage Office for advice or information, or to discuss something that’s bothering you, the voice you hear on the other end of the phone is that of a VOLUNTEER.

Committee Reports:Community Relations - Pat Sullivan announced that next month, the speaker will be from the American Vet Dogs organization. You will learn about the wonderful animals that are trained to help veterans in many different ways: guide dogs for sight impaired vets, service dogs that can open and close doors, hearing dogs to alert vets to relevant sounds, and therapy dogs to aid those in rehab. It should be a gratifying presentation.

Get Well Wishes - Pat Sullivan announced that Get Well Wishes were sent to Gloria Post, Barbara Nilsen, Don Vazquez, Bill Angst and Ken Bryers.

We all hope you all Get Well soon!

FLORIDA / Manasota West

Our meeting was brought to order at Noon on March 9th by President Ted Martines with the Pledge of Allegiance. Ted welcomed and informed eight members, seven spouses, and four guests that we have a special guest, President Betty Bohlander, of the Bethpage chapter.

Betty had working relationships with several of our members and they shared stories with the chapter. As they were catching up, Betty moved the conversation to activities at Bethpage and the status of the Club there and around the country. She also informed us of changes that have occurred in the Bethpage chapter facilities.

Betty has been traveling to several Retiree Club Chapters in Florida with her travel companion, Grumman retiree Elisa Decker. Elisa also attended our meeting and shared Northrop Grumman happenings on Florida’s east coast with the group. It was quite nice to have these two ladies with us for lunch.

L to R: Ted Martines, B. Bohlander, John Zinna

Treasurer John Zinna gave the financial report, which indicates we may be healthy, but not so wealthy. However the budget will allow us to continue “meal of the month”. Howard Schlobohm, last month’s winner, was not able to make this meeting so he requested we provide his winnings (lunch) to Betty, which we did. This month’s winner was Ted Martines who will have to make the April 13th meeting to collect.

Thanks to Con Gilsenan’s salesmanship, our 50/50 drawing was a healthy one this month. Our winner was John DeGeorge, who discovered it is profitable to attend with his wife Cathy. Fran Zinna received the consolation prize of Aerospace magazine.

Fran Zinna introduced guests Phil & Kathy Peters. Although Phil was not a former Grumman employee, he worked on many of us in his Sayville, NY dental practice. Being Long Islanders, and looking just like the rest of us, the retired dentist and his wife/

assistant fit right in with our group.

Lost and Not Found, yet! If you have our Chapter’s copy of Jake’s Book, “The Last Chapter,” please let John or Ted know.

The Chapter agreed that the last monthly meeting of the season will be our April 13th meeting, then we will meet again on September 14, at Noon, at the Pier 22 Restaurant overlooking the Manatee River in Bradenton, FL. We invite Grumman and Northrop Grumman retirees, or those currently working, to stop in and enjoy the conversation. Ask President Betty - we’re a fun group. Our 8th of March meeting was held at the Golden Corral, in Punta Gorda, with 21 members and guests in attendance. President Clem Moors led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer. Present for their Happy Birthday song were Paul Baldwin, Betty Bohlander, Janet Daly, Tony Perre, and John Vecchione.

Speaking for Merrill Lynch Wealth Management were Thomas Gayer and Alex Kehoe. They discussed the important need for financial planning and gave us an update on current market conditions. They also gave us info on Northrop Grumman stock and oil prices affecting the market. It was an interesting discussion with questions and answers. It was a pleasure to have these young men with us.

We were pleased to have Betty Bohlander, President of the Northrop Grumman Retiree Club in Bethpage, and Elissa Decker join us. We’ve seen Betty’s photo in the Grumman Newsletter. She assured us she was the “real deal” and not a cardboard cutout.

March 16, 2016

A warm, sunny Florida day greeted our 64 attendees as they gathered for our last winter meeting at the Suntree Country Club main dining room. Following the Pledge of Allegiance led by President Bob Prais, Ed Romano gave his always-tasteful blessing.

Vice President John Lau introduced our guest speaker Jeanne Hakkila-Wills, the Vice President of Mission Advancement for Aging Matters in Brevard and a key member of the Aging Matters in Brevard

Page 8: From The President - Grumman Retiree Club · PDF fileKen developed the knack of painting wonderful pictures of the Grumman ... From The President ... at Marjorie Post Park, in Massapequa,

8

Leadership Team. While Jeanne’s broad background includes a degree in Electrical Engineering, program management experience at Harris Corporation and a local Episcopal Academy, it became very obvious from her enthusiasm that she has found her niche serving Brevard’s senior community.

Part of the Aging Matters charter is to help seniors live in their homes – in this capacity, they serve 5,000 seniors per year. Utilizing a donated kitchen, they turn out 1500 meals per day, five days a week, with an all-volunteer work force. This program provides lunch, along with fellowship, at minimal cost, or where necessary, free. While SCAT buses are available for non-drivers, Meals On Wheels will deliver the food to those confined to their homes.

An inspiring new program is Vets Driving Vets: a volunteer program providing transportation to the VA facility for veterans, by veterans. In another program, senior drivers are provided to take non-driving seniors to doctors’ offices. There is also aide from the RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program), which is federally funded. The Home Care Program, active for 30 years, will inspect homes to determine if they are usable and safe for impaired seniors and will arrange to have ramps installed when necessary.

Considering the age of our Chapter’s members, it was reassuring to hear of the diversity of programs available through the auspices of such a highly motivated spokesperson as Ms. Hakkila-Wills.

Treasurer Bill Waldron introduced new member Janice Byrne, and guests Betty & Frank Lattanzi. Bill also noted some significant donations to the Veterans Honor Flight and to the Scholarship Fund. Our usual advance went out to the Brevard School Foundation to start our new scholarship year. All accounts have appropriate balances.

Grumman Gremlins: George Graefe reported that the three-day Titusville air show and static display of unique and vintage aircraft was the greatest ever. The Friday night show in particular was outstanding featuring a renowned close formation aerial display team with aircraft trimmed with fiber optic lighting. A fireworks display topped off the evenings events.

During all three days of the show, free flights in Huey and Cobra helicopters were provided by the Georgia Air Soldiers as well as flights in a B-29 Bomber. Even a MIG-17 and an F-100 Super Sabre were featured, along with a World War II Sherman Tank.

New Business: The members of the Scholarship Committee were alerted to an upcoming meeting to review applicants for the 2016 scholarships upon the return of Chairman Jim Glover.

50/50 Drawing: There were five 50/50 winners. Mariann Lau won the Grand Prize, a bottle of Pinot Grigio and a $25 gift card to Publix.

Employee Birthdays March: James Lawler, Nick Milonas, John McDonald, Ira Morgan, and Robert Filipi

Spouse Birthdays March: Joan Mohlenbrok, Elizabeth SanFilippo, Ron Sidorski, Pat Belmont, Dianne Bennett, Dolly Casko, Anita Leslie, Pat Duester, and Diana MacCarthy

Anniversaries March: James & Carol Lawler, Patricia & Joe Mullings, Pat & Walter Duester, Patrick & Mary Ranieri, George & Peggy Graefe, Gus & Audrey Lanzo, and Oscar & Emma Basilio

Congratulations to All

GEORGIA / Peach Pit

Our March 15 meeting, held at the Triumph Plant [formerly Grumman Plant 66], started at 12:45PM. There were 17 present when President Janet Sills called the meeting to order and VP Ted Zarkowsky lead attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance. Chaplain Designee Mary Archer gave the Blessing, which was followed by the meal and fellowship.

Old Business:A motion to accept the February 16 Meeting Minutes was made by Ted Zarkowsky and seconded by Paul Bernichon. There being no changes either by proxy or from those present, the motion passed.

New Business:1. President Janet welcomed those present and introduced Jake Bussolini, former Grumman Senior Vice President. Jake spoke about a Book he authored. 2. Secretary Lew Iuliucci extended March Happy Birthday wishes to: Tom Blenk [25th], Geraldine Collins [20th], Gene Donovan [7th], Dennis Klingener [20th], and Joe Sansotta [26th], and Barbara L. Stevens [19th]. 3. There were no Wedding Anniversaries to report. 4. Treasurer Joe Sansotta reported, by proxy, that our bank balance continues to grow. Please send checks for our Community Service Fund (payable to Grumman-Northrop Grumman Retiree Club), and checks for the Club’s Scholarship Fund (payable to Grumman-Northrop Grumman Retiree Club Scholarship Fund) to: Joe Sansotta, 3748 Sussex Drive NE, Milledgeville, Ga. 31061-9360. 5. David J. Sansotta, the son of Joe & Pat Sansotta, is hospitalized so the parents are helping David’s family until he is released from the Hospital. He is in all our thoughts for a speedy recovery.

Our guest speaker, former Grumman Senior VP Jake Bussolini, spoke about the book he authored, regarding the final days of Grumman. He gave a thorough overview of what began as a merger but turned into a hostile takeover. He included, in the

book, a chapter on the sale of Gulfstream as it was another story that he felt had to be told. By the way, Jake has authored a number of books, all about Outdoor topics. Thank You, Jake, for taking the time to visit this Chapter and for taking the former Plant 66 Tour roughly three decades after your last visit.

Program:Site Manager Phil Treadway gave attendees an overview of various products, pointing out the Site had been a Cost Center but now is a stand-alone Profit and Loss Site. Then, we had a meet and greet with his Staff. The presentation was very interesting and impressive. Thank You, Phil for spending the time with our chapter for the entire meeting, and Thank You for the hospitality.

Attendees then took the escorted Plant Tour, which is always a treat to see work in progress at a Tier 1 supplier to Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Embraer, Gulfstream, and General Electric Aircraft Engine.

75/25 Fund Raiser: Paul Bernichon won the raffle and donated the winnings to the Community Service Fund. Thank You, Paul.

A motion to end the Business meeting was made by Tim Collum and seconded by Guil Mauldin. The motion carried and adjournment was 1:50PM.

Maryland / Glen Arm

We held our first quarterly meeting of 2016 on March 15, at the Golden Corral in White Marsh / Fullerton (Baltimore) MD. We had a good showing, including a few new members. Members decided to hold our next meet at the Golden Corral, in Aberdeen Md. It is scheduled for June 21st at 6:30 PM. After everyone feasted on the buffet and had desserts, we opened our social meeting. We took a few minutes in memory of member Walter Golde, who passed away in mid-December. Rolfe Fesser spoke briefly about our friend and said there is a memorial service planned for some time in April. He will forward the date and time once the details are confirmed. Walter and his wife Audrey became members of the Glen Arm Chapter a number of years ago, after they moved to Maryland from Long Island.

Treasurer Al Showalter gave an updated status of our bank account. He also gave a count of paid memberships for 2016. We are still waiting on a few more renewals to come in and he said we picked up four new members. As of meeting night, our total paid up count was 41. We talked about some possible activities that we may want to entertain as a group, but no decisions were made at this time.

We also spoke about starting a Facebook page for our

Chapter. New member Dave Hasselbarth volunteered to look into it and advise us on setting one up. We will follow up on this as a number of members thought it would be a good way to publicize club activity and notifications in conjunction with our group emails. Happy Birthday! to: Jerry Lambert (04/16); Jim Swearingen (05/26); Cas Swinder (05/29); Mike Taylor (06/9); Don Rutherford (06/16).

PENNSYLVANIA Northeastern Pennsylvania Chapter

March. 2016

The Lunch Bunch held their last get together for the Winter on March 17, at the Alpine Restaurant, in Honesdale. In attendance were the Dowds, the Zupps, the Rademachers, and the Sparkowskis. Since it was St. Patrick’s Day, we had a wonderful time talking about all things Irish and about our ethnic backgrounds. Since we had three of our four Officers present, an Executive decision was made: Starting with the April meeting, we will be attending three of the following restaurants in succeeding months. They are Kays in Lake Ariel; Alpine in Honesdale; and Boathouse in Hawley. When I got home from the Luncheon, I received an email from Jonathan Rinde, son of John Rinde. He stated that his Dad passed away on January 12th,

This meeting was to resolve whether our Chapter is to remain solvent. We have lost over ten members during 2015. Several other members cannot travel due to physical problems or illnesses.

Vice President Bob Taylor suggested that our Treasury money be donated to the Retiree Cub Scholarship Program. The members accepted his suggestion. The meeting was used to remember what we went thru (good and bad times) in the past. We all wished each other good wishes and look forward to keeping in contact with each other as often as possible.

Our meetings and gatherings at the Clear Lake Park Building and Hobby Air Terminal will not be quickly forgotten. We will relinquish the building back to Clear Lake Park Department.

We thank the Newsletter for their contact with other chapters and would like to find a way to continue receiving the monthly newsletters if possible. We will work with Bethpage to find a way.

A final Thank You and G-d Bless You All.

Grumman History - Chapter 38Rough Seas Ahead (1986)

Grumman’s 1986 New Year celebration began a few weeks early (December 13) when festivities were punctuated with booming sounds echoing across the desert sky. This sound announced the X-29 blasting through the sound barrier for the first time and symbolically saying, “Grumman is a technology leader and we are ready for the future!”

Early news was quite low key, featuring items such as Tachonics, the new factory that Grumman would use to manufacture high performance gallium arsenide microchips in Plainsboro, New Jersey; Pearson Yachts would be sold; and St. Augustine delivered the last updated A-4, Skyhawk to Malaysia.

News out of Washington D.C. wasn’t great. The Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Act (officially the “Balanced Budget & Emergency Deficit Control Act of 1985”) mandated budget cuts if the federal budget was above the desired level as this law sought to force a balanced budget by 1991. As the budget exceeded the threshold, Grumman faced a 4% reduction in its programs although this was less than the anticipated 5% cut as the fixed-price Greyhound (C-2A), Tomcat (F-14D) and Intruder (A-6F) upgrade efforts were exempt from the law. Additionally, there was talk about stopping the F-14 production for a transition year before the introduction of the F-14D. This would be disastrous.

Again, with impeccable timing, both the A-6F and F-14D development programs were encountering difficulties that management acknowledged could significantly impact program cost, schedule, and performance. The issue was not the new engine but the common computer the Navy was to supply to both of these aircraft programs as a means to achieve big cost-savings. However the computer’s performance was significantly inadequate and the mitigation cost created a major issue with the Navy.

Modest achievements continued such as winning a nice electronic upgrade program for the Air Force’s 152 F-111s (including the EF-111 and other types), studying concepts based on Grumman’s Tokomak fusion knowledge to develop neutral particle beam space weapons for the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), and Grumman Allied announcing the availability of a 92 foot hook and ladder “AerialCat”, which - together with the already-in-production 95-foot and 102-foot models – formed what critics were calling the best hook and ladder truck product family in the industry.

Finally the hoped for big headline arrived: Nearly one-year after Grumman’s post office van completed the endurance test and for the ensuing six months, the competition moved from the test track to law offices as the competitors fought to make substantial changes. The Post Office kept rejecting these protests and requests. Finally, when LTV was told that they had made so many changes they would have to rerun the endurance test, they withdrew from the competition. By then, Fruehauf (one of the POVOCO partners) felt the bad performance of their entrant would be reputation damaging and also withdrew. The path was now clear for Grumman to capture this contract if pricing would be agreeable. The Post Office received that information in January.

April 8, 1986: The win was official. Grumman was to build the Post Office’s Long Life Vehicle (LLV): 99,150 of them with options for 59,490 more. Total value was $1,115,196,650; the biggest single contract Grumman ever won! First deliveries would be in one year.

The popularity of the Tomcat soared that May. The hugely popular and year’s top grossing film, “Top Gun”, was released. It featured Tom Cruise and more importantly, “showed-off” the F-14 with spectacular air-to-air combat cinematography. This movie, augmented by Senator Al D’Amato’s twenty-three-and-a-half-hour filibuster lambasting the defense budget, helped keep the Tomcat program on track.

Problems with Libya continued as F-14s were fired upon with air-to-air missiles; later that day, F-14s intercepted two Libyan MiG-25s. No exchange of fire took place this time but later that month F-14s provided air cover for

Page 17: From The President - Grumman Retiree Club · PDF fileKen developed the knack of painting wonderful pictures of the Grumman ... From The President ... at Marjorie Post Park, in Massapequa,

17

a series of air strikes on Libyan targets. These actions, together with frequent hijacking of commercial airliners and other acts of terrorism, caused great concern within Grumman’s management regarding the safety of its international travelers. This prompted a major article in Grumman World. It stated that Grumman would publish a quarterly report on security guidelines for international travel. The article also noted that American defense workers were at especially high risk and advised keeping a low profile, wearing no articles of clothing that identified you as a Grumman employee, carrying no business or credit cards, nor wearing the 25-year watch, nor using “logo” baggage tags. It also admonished travelers not to wear a business suit. This was serious business.

George Skurla retired as president of Grumman that July, after 42 years. He was proud of his achievements, having overseen most of the massive investments during the preceding five years. He also could proudly point to three giant wins in less than a year: Joint STARS, a massive Air Force contract to provide a surveillance aircraft capable of generating paradigm-changing views of the battlefield: IFTE, a major new near-the-combat-front-line tester that would save the Army money while improving battlefield equipment readiness; and the post office LLV, a great new van that would greatly improve mail delivery efficiency for the next quarter century. These wins, when added to all the other business, pushed the company’s backlog to a record $6.7 billion. However, program performance, more wins, and profitable ones at that, would have to keep coming as long-term debt had increased by 60% in just the past year, from $263 million to $421 million. In his parting remarks Skurla commented, “With so many R&D programs in house, the demands on our financial, technical; and management resources are unprecedented.”

John O’Brien, the newly installed Grumman Corporation president quickly admonished the workforce that communications needed improvement, as did morale. He warned that the staff would be stretched, because hiring would be tight. Our opportunities are great, he said, but everyone would have to work harder as the organization addressed the huge backlog.

John Bierwirth reiterated Grumman’s challenges from a different angle later in the year. He noted that Long Island was no longer suitable for manufacturing. He cited traffic, energy bills twice that of our competitors, and the closing of many local manufacturing firms. He emphasized the point by illustrating how Grumman recently made large investments off the “Island” in Millidgeville, GA, Melbourne, FL, and Houston, TX.

While these messages of concern would carry forward into the following years, the F-14D program had success in October when the Super Tomcat F-14+ (an F-14A with the new engines but without the new avionics) had its maiden flight. This flight also inaugurated the use of the upgraded Automated Telemetry System, a $30 million beneficiary of Grumman’s facility upgrade program. Test pilot Joe Burke noted the 35% increase in engine thrust provided great acceleration. The F-14 chase planes had to use afterburners to keep up with the Super Tomcat. While a fuel system unbalance cut the flight a little short this flight was a complete success.

Forewarned by management that there would be rough seas ahead, the dedicated team at Grumman vigorously attacked its large stack of unfinished and challenging business

1986 F-14 Scorecard: The Iranian F-14/Phoenix/Sidewindwers brought down 19 (1 unconfirmed) more Iraqi jets: Su-22s, MiG-23s, a MiG-25, a Tu-22B, and Mirage Fs.

Note: In the March Newsletter, Chapter 37 mentioned that the EA-6B probably jammed the communications system of the Egyptian airliner carrying the Achille Lauro terrorists. The author has found a Wikipedia site, “F-14 Tomcat Operational History”, that stated an EA-6B did jam the airliner’s communications system.
