Dear Members,

This is the most exciting Newsletter that I have had the privilege to write since we began our relocation project

back in 2002. Exciting, because now I can tell you the actual date that we will be beginning play on the Gar-

diners Run Golf Course – Saturday 3rd May!

The official opening of our new course will take place on Friday 2nd May with an official Opening Ceremony con-

sisting of a few speeches, the cutting of a ribbon, much celebration and the first ball being struck down the first

fairway. The week from Saturday 3rd through to Friday 9th May will be open to members and officially invited

guests only. Green Fee players will be able to play on the course from the following weekend (Saturday 10th and

Sunday 11th) pending available tee times. Because of the expected demand to play during these first few days

there will be a priority order for play according to membership category and members will be required to notify

the Club Office by either email or in person advising us of their desire to play on either day of the first weekend.

We will accept requests to play on these days from 10.00 a.m. on Monday 14th April and these will close at 5.00

p.m. on Saturday 19th April. I am sure that members will understand our need to put these arrangements in to

place so that we can manage the timesheet to enable everyone to have a fair opportunity to play according to

their membership category.

Our Lady Members will have their official Opening Day on Tuesday 6th May, and the ladies Captain will manage

the time sheet. Wednesday Midweek, Friday Seniors Competitions and all further competition days will have

time sheets posted online as we now do.

As for the course itself, it is making good progress towards our Opening Day in about 3 months time. Whilst the

extremely hot days haven’t been conducive to good growth the general progress of the fairways and greens is

pleasing. Certainly, the front nine is looking great but we may need to play preferred lies on the back nine and in

the rough pending the rates of growth over the next 3 months. I am sure that some people will say, “Why aren’t

we holding off till next Spring to allow these fairways to strengthen up?” This would appear to be a wise decision

in a perfect world, however, as we have to be off the Back 9 at Kingswood Drive by June 1 we simply don’t have

that option.

In the meantime, whilst much of the Board members’ and our General Manager and her staff members, energies

have been directed towards completing the myriad of tasks involved in getting the new course ready for play and

ensuring that our infrastructure and facilities are ready to receive the onslaught of members and visitors, we

have also been heavily involved in developing our Master Plans for the refurbishment of the Kingswood Drive

site. These works will hopefully begin sometime over the next 12 months or so. Whilst our excitement is firmly

focussed on May 3rd we are fully aware that the business of the Club must not only continue but also grow to en-

sure that we can meet the additional costs associated with operating and maintaining the two locations. To facili-

tate this growth we need to present our current clubhouse and business activities with a fresh face that will en-

sure that it stays viable in a very competitive market place. This will require investment in our facilities and

hence the Board has been involved with consultants in developing master plans for the future development at

Kingswood Drive. A number of interested members as well as our Sporting Captains / Presidents have been part

of the consultative process undertaken so far and I would like, on behalf of the members, to sincerely thank them

and acknowledge their contributions.

In order to communicate the ideas and thoughts of the Board and these members we will be holding an Infor-

mation Meeting at the Kingswood Road Clubhouse at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday 5th March. At this meeting we will

also be advising members of the details of our Opening Week at Gardiners Run as well as of an evening on Friday

11th April for Members to visit the Clubhouse and see it in its fully completed and operational state. An invita-

tion to this Information Meeting on Wednesday 5th March will be posted to all members in the next few days.

This is a must attend meeting as vitally important information regarding the details of the Opening Week, in-

cluding who can play when, and the future development of our Kingswood Road site which will affect all Golf,

Bowls, Tennis, Wine Club and Social members will be presented. Please make the effort to be there on this night.

Members visiting the Kingswood Drive site will have noticed the recent acquisition of a temporary tennis shelter.

Whilst this structure is actually quite an improvement on the previous shelter it is only of a temporary nature whilst

our master plans are being developed to incorporate a new court and improved facilities.

Also in about 3 months time our Bowls members and staff will begin the preparation of the area of the front rink to

have an artificial green installed to be ready for play in the 2014 /2015 pennant season. It certainly is a busy time at

the Club.

Recently, I advised Golf Members that the Manager of Gardiners Run, Marcus Sullivan, has accepted the position of

General Manager of the Sanctuary Lakes Golf Course. Whilst we are very disappointed to lose Marcus who has com-

pleted some very good work including developing a marketing plan, building our new website for Gardiners Run and

selling memberships (46 new members presently signed up during his time with us), we acknowledge that for a

young family man the offer made to him by Sanctuary Lakes was too good to pass up. Hence Marcus finished up

with us on Friday 7th February and we wished him well for his new challenges at Sanctuary Lakes. In the interim we

have employed, Terry Hawking, former Manager of Yering Meadows Golf Club, to assist us to keep things rolling

along towards our Opening Day whilst the Board once again undertakes a selection process for the Gardiners Run

Manager’s position.

As I said at the beginning of my Newsletter piece, it is very exciting times at CPCC and I am sure that all members

are counting the days till all of the hard work and the patience and resilience that has been displayed by so many

members, our General Manager and Staff over the past 12 years comes to fruition in the next few months. Please

come along, celebrate and enjoy the wonderful new facilities that our Club will be able to boast and remember that

all of this was born in the days of despair back in 2002 when our future looked absolutely doomed.

Congratulations to our President, Bruce Bower, who received a ‘Menzies Australia Day Award’ at a ceremony

conducted by the Federal Minister for Social Services, the Honorable Kevin Andrews MP (Menzies Electorate), at the

Manningham Council Function Centre on Monday 27th January.

The Menzies Award, which has been conducted annually for the past 21 years, acknowledges individuals who have

made significant voluntary contributions to their communities.

Bruce’s award cited his leadership of the community of the Yarra Road Primary School to recover from their school

fire in 2004; 26 years as a coach and 19 years as a School Co-ordinator of the KMDBA After School Basketball

Competition; 11 years as a Tournament Organiser for the VPSSA Golf Championships; his roles as President,

Golf Captain, Junior Convenor and Senior, Colts and Junior Pennant Manager over the past 22 years at the

Chirnside Park Country Club and Foundation Committee Member of the Lilydale High School Excellence in Golf

program implemented to enable students to be able to undertake supervised professional golf tuition and practice

whilst completing their VCE studies.

Bruce’s family, our General Manager, Barbara Kelly, and members of the Yarra Road Primary School staff and

school community attended the presentation ceremony along with approximately 600 other guests supporting the 42

Menzies Award recipients for 2014.

Well done Bruce.

Wine Club News

On Friday 7th February, 47 members gathered for

Bowls and Burgers and enjoyed a fine selection of

wines presented by Luke on behalf of DeBortoli. The

evening again proved popular and was enjoyed by all.

We were lucky that the weather cooled down

and it was very pleasant on the green. Brian Culham

organised a "spider" competition for the non-bowlers

before the game.

Our next function will be the Annual bottling of our

Club port from the barrel in our cellar. Some of you

may not know that the cellar was lost when the historic

barn was destroyed by fire as the cellar was at that

time located in the barn building. The present barrel

was purchased in the early 1990's and our CellarMasters have been blending in this barrel since that time. the

result is a very nice "drop". The plan is to finish bottling by noon and retire to the Club Bistro for lunch. a notice

will be mailed to members soon.

Your Committee is considering a dinner [themed] for April. Details of this function will be mailed to Members

later this Month.

The Annual Meeting will be held early May so if you would like to help on the new Committee please talk to me.

It is not onerous with about 8 meeting a year with the members intent on enjoying themselves in the process.

Bowls News We'll our Pennant Season is almost at an end and it looks as though we will have one team from the Midweek

Pennant going on to the finals and possibly four teams from the Saturday Pennant.

I would like to wish everyone involved all the very best and to go out on the day and go for it.

Always remember that you are representing your own Bowls Club, Chirnside Park, but at the same time enjoy

your day.

Michelle Wilson along with Karen Morgan a past Chirnside member, joined with two other ladies and won the

Regional Ladies Fours competition. Now they will be off to Bendigo to compete in the STATE FOURS. We wish

them all the very best.

Michelle your trophy cabinet must be overflowing!

My thanks to Michelle, Peter & Neville for their contribution in running the wheel etc., after Saturday Pennant

which has enabled us to purchase the raffle number machine and the Greens Temperature Gauge.

I would like to thank the Board for employing Doug Agnew to look after our back green. The Bowls Committee

feels he is the best person for the job - only time will tell.

Talking about greens, it will soon be time to start the preparation for our new carpet on the front green. To all

those who have put their name to help I say a big thank you and I look forward to working with you all at the end

of March and early April.

The Shepparton trip details are up in the foyer. It has been a successful trip over the last couple of years.

To all who are sick we wish you a speedy recovery and those traveling during the winter months please be safe.

Rule of the Month

Golf News

It will be important to know the local about staked trees for when we commence play at Gardiners Run. For the

protection of these young trees, generally the rule states that the player MUST relief, at the nearest point, no closer

to the hole. Nearest point is exactly that, being the moment the staked tree doesn’t interfere with your stance or

intended swing path, that is the point deemed to be your nearest point. This may only be inches from where your

ball currently lies. The staked tree would be classified as an immovable obstruction; therefore the player is entitled

to drop the ball within 1 club length of that nearest point. Whilst we don’t want to take the integrity out of hole

being played, on occasions where there are a cluster of staked trees, once the player has taken relief, if another

staked tree interferes with the players stance or intended swing path, s/he must repeat this procedure, even if this

means the procedure is repeated until the player has reached the fairway. Be aware though that nearest point

doesn’t automatically mean that you start heading in the direction of the fairway, as the nearest point may actually

be further away from the fairway, or require you to drop in into a worse spot. The rules state you must take a drop,

it doesn’t state the position you are required to drop will be any good.

Golf Professional’s Tip

Playing from bare lies With the course not seeing rain for some time now, everyone is experiencing having to play off bare lies. This can

make the shot difficult to execute correctly, however there are some simple adjustments that can be made to help

ensure we hit the ball first, before the ground, allowing a decent strike so the ball can travel a reasonable trajectory

and distance. What we want to avoid doing is leaning back through impact, or scooping at the ball as these force

the club to hit the ground before the ball, resulting in a poor strike.

Try these easy set-up adjustments to help improve the strike

1. Set the ball position slightly behind the centre of your stance, about 1-2 inches.

2. Set the hands slightly forward, towards your left shoulder

3. Slightly move your weight on to your front leg

Select one more club, and only produce a ¾ swing. This will reduce your weight excessively transferring to your

back foot, improving your strike on the ball.

The aim is to strike the ball first, not allowing the poor ground conditions to have as much of an effect on your shot.

irons.

New Handicapping System The new handicapping system has now been operational for 1 month, and is receiving positive feedback. The most

commonly discussed point of this system has been the slope system, and how your handicap alters depending on

the difficultness of the course your playing. This will be a very handy tool for us when we move to Gardiners Run.

If you would like to learn more about this new system, or as a trial run please visit www.golf.org.au.

I recommend everyone to use the on-line daily handicap look-up chart to see how your handicap may vary once we

are on the new course.

One component I would like to remind members of is the “Provisional handicap” status. This is when a player has

returned 5 or more No Score Not Approved (Did Not Finish) in their 20 round history. When a player has this sta-

tus, they do not qualify to win any prizes in a competition. A player will return to normal status once their 20

round history has less than 5 NSN rounds. Please be aware if you are currently on a provisional status, or close to

being. Under certain conditions, a player can use a social round for handicapping purposes, which is a great way to

eliminate NSNA rounds if needs be.

Ben Hollis has left the club to pursue his playing career. Ben plans on playing in pre-qualifying events, before ac-

cessing which tour qualifying school he wishes to attend. We wish him the best of luck with his career.

Club Fitting We have recently introduced a Titleist fitting cart in to the shop to allow us to fit all levels of golfers from their driv-

er through to their wedges. We carry most shaft flex’s in lengths that range from +1” to -1/2”, and lie angles from 6◦

upright to 3◦ flat.

Supporting the fitting cart is our new Lie and Loft machine. This machine allows us to see the true loft of your

irons and hybrids, along with their lie angle. Particular irons can then be adjusted to your needs to help ensure a

better strike is created, and a straighter ball flight.

As an introductory prior to us moving out to Gardiners, we are providing complementary checks on member’s clubs

specs, and adjustments, if required, can be made at a cost of $5 per iron.

Previous newsletters have detailed about the effects of shaft lengths and lie angles, but if you would like to know

more about this (highly recommended), please see Luke in the golf shop.

I would like to extend a warm welcome back to you all for

2014 and wish you every success for the year. Over the

holiday period we were able to close the doors on the tennis

clubhouse. It is now ready for demolition at CSR's discretion

as we now have use of a new clubroom located at the back of

court 5. Although it is only a temporary arrangement, it is a

substantial improvement on what we had. This will be where

we operate from until the redevelopment of the Country Club

is complete. Time frames for that will be revealed to the

membership once final plans are approved. Suffice to say the

club has come along way with those plans to date.

Summer competition has resumed again and we have been

challenged with hot conditions, as you would expect this time of the year. The finals are only a few weeks away and

I am encouraging all players to strive to be part of the finals action.

Court 6 is still available for our use at this stage, however it is up to the developer as to when they take it for

preparation of the road that will occupy that space. When it does go, we will still be able to function on a Saturday

morning and at coaching.

It wont be long before players will need to start thinking of whether they will be playing during the winter season,

o please start to give that some consideration.

In the meantime keep enjoying your tennis and all the best for the remainder of the season. Remember to drink

plenty of water on the hot days and to wear a hat and sunscreen.
