From the Pastor’s Laptop In today’s Gospel Jesus attracts a sinner. How did He do it? He did it

by looking up at him, smiling and joyfully announcing that He wanted to visit his home: “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.” Notice that Jesus did not begin by pointing out the man’s sins. The result was that Zacchaeus “received him with joy.” (Luke 19:5-6)

Pope Francis loves to emphasize that we should go among the sinners, seek out the lost sheep, mingle with them until we “smell like the sheep,” and announce the Good News on every street corner. Obviously the lost sheep and the loiterers on the street corners will not be converted if the first thing we do is point out their sins. We must forget the sin for a moment and love the sinner. We must first show that we enjoy staying with them. This is what Pope Francis means when he says that we should not always talk about sin.

Today’s Old Testament reading describes the love of God as being exactly like this. It begins by saying that God is first of all merciful: “You have mercy on all… and you overlook people's sins that they may repent. For you love all things that are and loathe nothing that you have made…” Then it says that out of love, God gradually helps the sinner to change their ways for the good of their own souls: “O LORD and lover of souls… you rebuke offenders little by little, warn them and remind them of the sins they are committing, that they may abandon their wickedness and believe in you, O LORD!…” (Wisdom 11:22-12:2)

Pope Francis is just reminding us of a very practical piece of pastoral wisdom that appears in the Old Testament in the example of Jesus, and in the lives of the saints. It is also summed up in an old adage which appeared in the “Poor Richard’s Almanac” by Benjamin Franklin: “You catch a lot more flies with honey than with vinegar!”

Religious Education Sacred Art… The Conversion of Zacchaeus

In this week’s Gospel we hear the story of Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10). This is a moving gospel passage because we see how powerful an encounter with Jesus can be. In many of the conversion stories in the bible we see an “invasion of grace.” This is the moment when God meets a person and invites them to be in a relationship with Him. For Zacchaeus this happens when Christ invites Himself to his house. This sacred art depicts the moment well. In each of these paintings Christ is personally speaking with Zacchaeus and inviting him. Zacchaeus responds immediately, joyfully welcoming Jesus and authentically converting his life in a concrete way. Christ is doing the same with each of us. How we respond to this invitation is the most important aspect of our life. God is always desiring for us to be in

relationship Him. That moment to respond to God’s invasion of grace could be right now! What is your response going to be?

When I think of Sally, I think of the scripture: Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others, (Philippians 2:4). Sally is selflessly involved in many areas of our parish life. She is currently serving as a sponsor in RCIA. This is a serious commitment, to be a lifelong companion to someone who is thinking about becoming Catholic. It is also important for a sponsor to have a great love for the faith and a strong desire to be a saint. Sally possess both those qualities. Sally is on the Respect Life Committee, which mets on the third Sunday of every month. The Respect Life Committee sponsored the refreshments for our day of faith with Dr. Benjamin Wiker at the beginning of October. Sally was in the kitchen getting the refreshments ready from 6am and was one of the last to leave in the afternoon. She handled a great deal of the behind-the-scenes efforts for that wonderful event. Sally also helped with the Many Hands, Many Hearts, One Mission dinner gala yesterday. Sally continuously gives so generously of her time and is a shining example to all of us of what it means to be a selfless servant. Thank you Sally!

Fleeing from God Monday, 7 October 2013 Part I

To hear the voice of God in one’s life, one needs to open his heart to surprise. Otherwise, one can start “fleeing from God”. In fact, it happens that Christians sometimes run away from God, while people who are “far away” are able to hear him. This was the focus of the

homily Pope Francis delivered on Monday morning, 7 October at Santa Marta. The Bishop of Rome used the story of Jonah as a paradigm in commenting on the first reading (1:1-16; 2:2-11): “he had his entire life in order; he served the Lord, perhaps he even prayed a great deal. He was a prophet, a good man and he did much good”. Yet “he didn’t want to be disturbed in the way of life he had chosen; when he heard the word of God

he sought to escape. And he fled from God”. Therefore, when “the Lord sent him to Ninevah, he boarded a ship to Spain. He was fleeing from the Lord”. In the end, the Pontiff explained, Jonah had already written his own story: “I want to be like this, this and this, according to the commandments”. He did not want to be disturbed. This is why he fled from God. The Pope warned that we, too, can be tempted to flee. “We can run away from God,” he said, “as a Christian, as a Catholic,” and even “as a priest, bishop or Pope”. We can all flee from God. This is a daily temptation: not to listen to God, not to hear his voice, not to hear his promptings, his invitation in our hearts”. Although “we may make a direct getaway,” he also noted that “there are also more subtle and sophisticated ways of fleeing from God”. The reference was to the Gospel passage from St Luke (10:25-37) which tells of “a certain man, half dead, who had been thrown into the street”. The Pope continued, referencing the scriptures, “Now by chance a priest was going down that road. A good priest, in his cassock: good, very good. He saw him and looked: I'll be late for Mass, and he went on his way. He didn't hear the voice of God there”. It was, the Pope explained, “different from Jonah’s escape, Jonah was clearly fleeing. Then a Levite passed by, he saw [the man half dead] and perhaps he thought: If I take care of him or go close to him, perhaps he is dead and tomorrow I’ll have to go to the judge to give testimony, and so he passed by on the other side. He was fleeing from the voice of God in that man”.

En el Evangelio de hoy Jesús atrae a un pecador. ¿Cómo lo hace? Lo hace mirándolo, sonriéndole y gozosamente anunciando que deseaba visitar su hogar: “Zaqueo, baja pronto, porque hoy debo de quedarme en tu casa.” Noten que Jesús no comenzó señalando los pecados del hombre. El resultado fue que Zaqueo “lo recibió con gozo.” (Lucas 19:5-6)

El Papa Francisco le encanta enfatizar que debemos de ir entre en los pecadores, buscando las ovejas descarriadas, convivir con ellas hasta que “olamos a oveja,” y anunciar las Buenas Nuevas en cada esquina. Obviamente que las ovejas descarriadas y los que se paran en las esquinas no van a tener una conversión si lo primero que hacemos es señalar su pecado. Debemos de olvidar el pecado por un momento y amar al pecador. Primero debemos demostrar que queremos estar con ellos. Esto es lo que el Papa Francisco quiere decir cuando dice que no debemos de estar siempre hablando del pecado. La lectura de hoy del Antiguo Testamento describe el amor de Dios siendo exactamente de esta manera. Dice que primero que todo Dios es misericordioso: “Te compadeces de todos… y aparentas no ver los pecados de los hombres, para darles ocasión de arrepentirse. Porque tu amas todo cuanto existe y no aborreces nada de lo que has hecho...” Luego dice que por amor, Dios poco a poco ayuda al pecador a cambiar su vida para el bien de su alma: “Tu amas todo lo que existe ...Por eso reprendes poco a poco a los que caen, y los amonestas recordándoles sus pecados, para que se aparten del mal y crean en TI, SENOR.” (Sab. 11:22-12:2)

El Papa Francisco nos recuerda sobre una parte muy práctica de nuestra sabiduría pastoral que aparece en el Antiguo Testamento, el ejemplo de Jesús, y en la vida de los santos. Todo se puede resumir en el antiguo dicho que aparece en el “Almanaque de Poor Richard” por Benjamín Franklin: “¡Uno atrapa mas moscas con miel que con vinagre!”

En fuga de Dios Lunes 7 de octubre de 2013 Parte I

Para oír la voz de Dios en la propia vida hay que tener un corazón abierto a las sorpresas. De otro modo el riesgo es ponerse «en fuga de Dios», alegando tal vez hasta una buena excusa. Y así puede ocurrir que precisamente los cristianos tengan la tentación de huir de Dios y las personas «lejanas» consigan en cambio escucharle. Lo dijo el Papa Francisco, quien, al celebrar la misa el lunes 7 de octubre, por la mañana, en Santa Marta, sugirió un camino seguro: dejemos escribir nuestra historia por Dios.

El Obispo de Roma, en la homilía, tomó como paradigma la historia de Jonás, comentando la primera lectura (1, 1 - 2, 1.11): él «tenía toda su vida bien organizada: servía al Señor, tal vez oraba mucho. Era un profeta, era bueno, hacía el bien». Como «no quería que se le molestara, con el método de vida que había elegido, en el momento en que oyó la palabra de Dios empezó a huir. Y huía de Dios». Así, cuando «el Señor le envía a Nínive, él toma la nave rumbo a España. Huía del Señor».

A fin de cuentas —explicó el Pontífice—, Jonás se había escrito la propia historia: «Yo quiero ser así, así, así, según los mandamientos». No quería ser molestado. He aquí la razón de su «fuga de Dios». Una fuga que, como alertó el Papa, puede vernos como protagonistas también a nosotros hoy. «Se puede huir de Dios —afirmó— siendo cristiano, siendo católico», incluso «siendo sacerdote, obispo, Papa. Todos podemos huir de Dios. Es una tentación cotidiana: no escuchar a Dios, no escuchar su voz, no oír en el corazón su propuesta, su invitación». Y si «se puede huir directamente» —prosiguió— «hay otras maneras de huir de Dios un poco más educadas, un poco más sofisticadas». La referencia es al pasaje evangélico de Lucas (10, 25-37) que cuenta de «este hombre, medio muerto, arrojado en el suelo de la vía. Por casualidad un sacerdote bajaba por la misma calle. Un digno sacerdote, con sotana: bien, buenísimo. Vio y miró: Llego tarde a misa, y continuó su camino. No había oído la voz de Dios, ahí». Se trata —explicó el Papa— de «una manera distinta de huir: no como Jonás, que huía claramente. Después pasó un levita, vio y tal vez pensó: Pero si yo lo tomo o si me acerco, tal vez está muerto, y mañana tendré que ir al juez y dar testimonio. Y siguió su camino. Huía de esta voz de Dios en aquel hombre». En cambio es «curioso» que quien tiene «la capacidad de entender la voz de Dios» sea «sólo» un hombre «que habitualmente huía de Dios, un pecador». En efecto —precisó el Pontífice—, «quien oye la voz de Dios y se acerca» al hombre necesitado de ayuda «es un samaritano, un pecador» lejano de Dios. Un hombre —recalcó— que «no estaba acostumbrado a las prácticas religiosas, a la vida moral». Estaba teológicamente en el error «porque los samaritanos creían que a Dios se le debía adorar en otro sitio» y no en Jerusalén.

Cuando pienso en Sally, pienso en la Escritura que dice: “No busque nadie sus propios intereses, sino mas bien preocúpese cada uno por los demás.” (Filipenses 2:4) Sally es parte de muchos ministerios en nuestra parroquia. Ella sirve ahora como madrina en RCIA. Este es un compromiso serio, el ser un compañero de por vida para alguien que se esté volviendo católico. También es importante que el padrino tenga un gran amor por la fe y un gran deseo de volverse santo. Sally posee estas dos cualidades. Sally es parte del comité de Respeto por la Vida el cual se reúne cada tercer domingo del mes. El Comité de Respeto por la Vida donó los refrescos y aperitivos para el día de Fe con el Dr. Benjamin Wiker al comienzo de octubre. Sally estuvo en la cocina desde las 6am y fue una de las ultimas personas en salir esa tarde. Ella se encargó de todos los esfuerzos para que fuera este un maravilloso evento. Sally también ayudó en la cena de gala de Many Hands, Many Hearts, One Mission ayer.
