“The seed cast

is the person

News, and

dreams.”

~ Matthew

13:23 The

Message

Dear Risen Savior Community,

Is it really August, already? I hear people talking about back-to

-school supplies, so it must be true! The thing is, returning to

school means extra expense for families with children. That’s

why our Noisy Offering for the month of August is going to

Associated Churches Backpack Project. They provide backpacks

filled with necessary school supplies for those who need that

extra bit of help. They do not only distribute these backpacks at

the start of the school year, however. All year long there is need

with children moving in and out of our school district, or

supplies getting used up or

damaged, so they also keep

a ready supply on hand.

Our Noisy Offering isn’t

much, but together with

other contributors around

the city, this project makes

a huge difference in the

lives of our community’s

most vulnerable children.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Every child in the city can show up the first day of school feeling

some excitement with their new backpack full of brand new

school supplies. If you know someone in need, please direct

them to Associated

Churches.

We also are

continuing to

provide food to

Light of the Cross

each month of the

year. Our fresh

produce from the

garden here at

church is greatly

appreciated. (BIG

thanks to Jim

Shuff!) You should

see the pickling

cucumbers we are

growing. Fantastic! During the month of August LOTC is asking

us to supply pasta sauce and noodles for those living in the food

desert area of Fort Wayne. Of course, they will accept any food

items, plus paper or cleaning products, any time of the year. Our

collection point is in the Kitchen, on the cart by the book shelves.

This is another small way we are loving our neighbors as

ourselves.

On Friday, August 4, at 5:30 pm, everyone is

invited to our Outdoor Pizza Party at Hawkins

Farm, which is a fundraiser for Lutheran

Outdoor Ministries, which does such incredible

work with children and youth every summer.

We will provide pizza, salad, desserts and

drinks for $15 per person. Whatever we make

will be rolled into our $10,000 goal for our Ice

Cream Social on Sunday, August 13, at 3 pm,

which also is going to support LOMIK.

Remember Bishop Gafkjen will be here for that,

along with camp staff and people from all Fort

Wayne ELCA churches! How we are blessed to

be a blessing! (Thanks for all your work on this,

Paul Twedt!)

Saturday, August 26, from 8:30 am – 3 pm,

will be the Fall Gathering Day Retreat for all

ELCA Women on the them e: The Path of

Prayer. We will meet at Resurrection Lutheran Church this year.

2

(Remember when we hosted it here?) The address is 14318 Lima

Road, FW, 46818. This year Deacon Diane Martin will lead the Bible

Study; we will learn about and walk the labyrinth the church built in

the grassy area behind the church, we will sing praises with Tehilla

from Auburn, practice a special meditation called Lectio Divina with

Karen Nelson, and learn to “Pray in Color” with Carol Webb.

If you’d like to carpool, please meet at Risen Savior at 8 am,

otherwise we’ll see you there! Registration is $10 which includes

lunch. For reservations call the Front Office at Risen Savior or email

[email protected] and we will register for the Fall

Gathering as a group. Also, there will be a canned food collection to

support St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church on Goshen Road, if you’d like

to bring something to donate for that. Come retreat together and be

spiritually fed!

Risen Savior is actively helping others, in small but mighty ways.

Does that remind you of a beloved story in the Bible about a little boy

who shared his two loaves of bread and five fish with Jesus? Do you

remember what Jesus did with that? He blessed it and then fed 5,000

men plus women and children. It really doesn’t take much to make a

big difference, or to lay the groundwork for an unexpected miracle!

Keep up the good work serving others, and remember to feed

yourselves spiritually as well! To God be the glory!

In Christ’s ministry together, Pr. Jeanie

someone you would

like us to send a card

know their

information and

address at the church

or (260) 436-1406.

Sunday, August

Food Bank Pantry Report

Reporting June 2017 Activity

In June, the LOTC Pantry provided 12,600 meals to 840 people

in 212 households, giving each person enough food for 15 meals. Of

those served, 38 households were first time clients and 174 were

repeat client families. The families included 65 children 5 years of

age or under, 214 children ages 6 thru 17, 87 individuals 60 years

old or older, 106 disabled people, and 22 veterans – 3 women and

19 men. 410 clients served were male, 430 were female, and 94

families were classified as "Female

Head of Household."

The Pantry received 1,000

pounds of food from the Associated

Churches Food Bank Network, and

228 pounds from the Partner

churches. They bought 1,697

pounds of food from the

Community Harvest Food Bank at a

cost of $267.74. The pantry did not

receive anything from TEFAP (the

federal government's commodities

program) in June. The 21 June

volunteers donated 223 hours of

their time.

Since adding additional territory to relieve the burden on

Bethlehem Lutheran, the family case load for LOTC has increased

by approximately 30 families monthly. LOTC has been able to

absorb this additional load because they have been blessed by the

faithful support of so many of you who provide monetary

contributions and donate food items. That said, there is always

something more to be done at LOTC. If you would like to support

LOTC with a contribution, or if you might be interested in serving as

a volunteer at the pantry, please call Phyllis Mort at 260-486-6478

or 260-615-1683. Those who are able and of a mind to assist with

the maintenance and upkeep of the LOTC Pantry site should call

Jack Davis at 260-485-2332.

As always, the LOTC Pantry thanks you for your continued

support of this ministry. Your generosity makes it all possible.

The Scrip program is a

win-win. Using the order

form in the bulletin, pick

what gift cards you want.

Total the amount, and

either write a check to

Risen Savior or pay by

cash. Give the order and

payment to Judy Bruns or

put in the box by pre-

school office; the next

Sunday your cards will be

given to you. You get the

cards with no running

around and the church

makes some money.

Our last quarter’s earning

from Kroger amounted to

$175.73 - thanks for your

support! If you’re not

signed-up through the

Kroger Community Rewards

program, please stop in the

office and see Judy Bruns,

who can assist.
