We take time to reflect on our faith journey and what has brought us to this day. Early in the Churchs history, Lent came to serve as a time for those preparing for baptism to hear the stories of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Scriptures. This particular liturgical season served as a time to reflect on Jesuslife and ministry. It was a time to wrestle with questions of belief, faith, and journeying with God. We continue to unpack the old— the stories, the traditions, the questions—and we take time to reflect on what this means for us today. It is my sense that the stories, the traditions, and the questions we carry, when unpacked and shared with others, allow for new imagin- ings. The Lenten, or literally springtime, season allows us to take stock of the past and the time that is behind us—much like reflecting on the snows and winds of winter and the warmth of fire- places. Lent also allows us to envision the future—like the crocuses and tulips that are about to bloom. We allow ourselves to face transition and change. We turn our attention toward gifts of a new season and new ways of living. During my college and seminary years it seemed that I was consistently busy packing and unpacking with moves across the state, to the other side of the globe, or from one side of the country to another. Now, having lived in the same home for fifteen years, packing and unpack- ing is relegated to travel for work or vacation. Still there is something about the process of unpacking. With each box, you run across old pictures, memen- tos, books, papers, or other items that have been stashed away and stored. In opening the boxes from the past, I have run across notes from teachers and friends, events caught on film, and books and magazines that I have read for class or fun. Always, going through the contents of these boxes reminds me where I have been, and what has brought me to today. In the Church, the season of Lent takes on much of the same feeling. In moving through the forty days of Lent, there is a built-in time for us to open Biblical stories and history, share memories, and lift up musical pieces from our individual and communal pasts. There is the opportunity to explore all that brings joy, while simul- taneously reflecting on those things Join us for worship Sunday morning at 8:45 a.m. or 11:00 a.m.

At St. Michael’s our Lenten theme for this year on Wednesday evenings is “Going Public.” We will be hearing from Jeremy Myers and Kristina Fruge from Augsburg University and musician Rachel Kurtz. They will invite us to think about the doorways that we have had to walk through to get where we are, the journey ahead of us, and the ways to deepen our faith and expand our public witness as we cross new thresholds. We are mindful that St. Michael’s is an incredible community and are convinced that the world needs more “St. Michaelsness” as we strive to follow Jesus and live a gospel of grace and hope for the world. Take this season of Lent to open the rich history of your past and imagine with us how we are being called into the future as we go public in sharing our faith and work in the world. And if you are interested in sharing, I know that Pastor Ali and I are excited to listen over coffee or lunch. In taking the time to share our “wanderings” through Lent, we continue a journey toward an exciting and faith-full future. Lenten blessings! Pastor Brad

St. Michael’s Lent 2020 Going Public

Wednesday evening Lenten services March 4, 11, 18, 25, and April 1 Soup Suppers 6:00 pm Worship services: 7:00 pm We will be utilizing Holden Evening Prayer as the mid-week liturgy during this Lenten season. This year we will also be wel-coming a guest musician and a guest theolo-gian in residence: Rachel Kurtz and Jeremy Myers. Together we will explore what it means for the church to go public, deepening our faith, and broadening our witness in the world.

Jeremy Myers has been a member of the Religion department at Augsburg University since 2006 with specific responsibilities for facili-tating the University’s Theology and Public Leadership degree program, the Youth

Studies minor, and the Augsburg Youth Theology Institute. He is a rostered Deacon in the ELCA. Rachel Kurtz has been touring and singing for almost 20 years. Her songs are rife with emotion and can make you get up and dance. Her voice can cut through the noise and gives the listener a place to rest. She has sung at the last 6 ELCA national youth gather-ings. Come hear her sing, you will be surprised and delight-ed, as she moves us through this Lenten journey.

Lenten Prayer Practice Not sure what to do with that stack of wonderful holiday cards and letters that family, friends, and neighbors sent you? Consider praying for all the people who sent you cards during the season of Lent! Here's how: • Divide out your cards into 40 groups and label them - one for each day in Lent. • Mark your calendar or set a reminder to save about 5 minutes a day to pray over the cards

you set aside for that day. If you think of it, reach out to the people in advance and let them know what day you will be holding them in prayer. Ask them if there is anything they want prayer for while you think of them and hold them in love that day.

• If you like to journal, write down your prayers for each person/family to keep you focused

and engaged. Or…if you have already managed to recycle the holiday cards and letters, you can grab the church directory. Each day read through the names of 8-10 households and pray for them. (Should you need a church directory simply stop by the Church office…we have them for you!)

Confirmation Updates

Soup Suppers Each year, the confirmation students help prepare, serve, and clean up the Wednesday Lenten soup suppers. This act of service provides hospitality for our members and guests, and is an opportunity for the youth to take on leadership in the congregation. Without the service of the confirmation class, Lenten soup suppers would not be possible! Soup suppers are on Wednesdays February 26th through April 1st. We ask that each confirmation student bring a parent or adult to help. If you are unable to serve with your child, this is a wonderful opportunity to connect with your student’s mentor to see if they are availa-ble to work with your child. Please arrive by 5pm each Wednesday. Once preparations are complete, youth and their adult partners are invited to eat before serving at 6pm. Youth will help clean up the kitchen, serving area, and fellowship hall prior to worship at 7pm. Worship attendance is expected for confirmation students. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Pastor Ali. Thank you for your service this Lent!

Looking for Confirmation Mentors! Are you looking for a way to deepen your connection to the church and make a positive impact in the life of a young person? Consider becoming a Confirmation Mentor! Mentors are paired with confirmation students and will learn alongside each other through volunteering, games, field trips, and more. If you are interested in becoming a Mentor, contact Pastor Ali today!

Confirmation Ministry Changes for 2020-2021 Since the fall of 2019, the then Youth & Education Committees- now known as the Children, Youth, and Family Ministry Committee- have been in conversation with St. Michael’s Staff in enhancing the Confirmation Ministry at St. Michael’s. Together they created the following Confirmation Model after connecting with parents in late January:

What does Confirmation look like right now? What will Confirmation look like beginning this Fall?

8th & 9th Grade Students

• Confirmation Class held on Sunday Mornings (September - May) led by a Pastor.

• Monthly Mentor Nights (September—May)

• Annual Winter Retreat

• Acolyting regularly in worship

• Volunteer with mentor (4 times throughout the year)

• Volunteer at Lenten Soup Suppers

10th Grade Students

• Attend Youth Group

• Complete Confirmation Projects

• Experience Dependable Strengths Workshop and Rite of Confirmation

7th—9th Grade Students

• 7th & 8th Graders are in Confirmation class on Sunday Mornings (September—May) led by a Pastor.

• 9th Graders are in Youth Group on Sunday mornings with their High School peers.

• Annual Winter Retreat

• Acolyting regularly in worship

• Volunteer with mentor (four times throughout the year)

• Volunteer at Lenten Soup Suppers

10th Grade Students

• Attend Youth Group

• Complete Confirmation Projects

• Experience Dependable Strengths Workshop and Rite of Confirmation

What does this mean?

The Confirmation ministry change in the fall will actually begin with our 6th graders. Historically, 6th & 7th graders alternate years learning about the Old Testament & New Testament. This Fall, 6th graders will have a Sunday School class experience to learn about both testaments in preparation for Confirmation. Fall of 2020, the Confirmation experience will begin in 7th grade, which will allow middle school youth (7th & 8th graders) to learn more about the Bible, the Catechism, and the Lutheran Church in a classroom setting with their middle school peers.

As 9th—10th graders will apply their experience in Confirmation in Youth Group as they deepen in Lutheran thought with their high school peers. Mentor nights and serving experiences will remain the same, but will now include 7th graders. This also means that the mentor experience will be three years long and more mentors will be needed for Confirmation. Beginning this Fall, mentors do not need to be a member of St. Michael’s. If you have any questions about this change, Pastor Ali, Pastor Brad, and Jon are all happy to connect further.

2020 Spring Musical

Students in grades 1-8 are invited to be part of this year’s spring musical, Called, by Mark Burrows. Through Called, we will discover how God can and will call anyone. Jeremiah heard the call when he was “just a child.” Mary and Martha heard the call when Jesus came to visit. Can we hear the call? God has put something beautiful in each of us and is calling us to share it with the world. It won’t always be easy, but God knows you and believes in you… even when you forget to believe in yourself. God is not calling you to be someone else. God is not calling you to be like someone else. God is calling you because you’re you. You are a child of God. You are worthy. You are called! Musical practice takes place on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30pm (6:15pm during

Lent). Performances will take place on May 17. Please contact Cory Bock, Director of Children’s Music, with any questions at ([email protected]).

• Urban Immersion 2020 (image to the right): In February, six youth and four adults participated

in Urban Immersion. During the weekend the group learned more about homelessness, served at a woman & children’s shelter, and experienced a poverty simulation. Many thanks to Jon Bates, Anna Ferro, Aleksi Moran, and Brian Thompson for your leadership!

• Attend Feed My Starving Children on Saturday, March 28! More info can be found on the next

page.

• Easter Breakfast, is one of the two fundraisers for the Youth Service Trip. The breakfast set-

up is on Saturday, April 11 at 9:00-1:00pm (lunch is served!). The breakfast takes place on Sunday, April 12. Watch out for more information in your emails.

There are three groups; each meets once a month at a different location over lunch. Feel free to join for the year or stop in as you have time or opportunity.

From January through May we will be reading The Great Spiritual Migration: How the World’s Largest Religion is Seeking a Better Way to be Christian by Brian McLaren.

We will be continuing our study about different faith traditions as we learn about Hinduism. by welcoming a guest speaker to share about their Buddhist practices. In February, the Women’s Circles planned to learn about Buddhism. Unfortunately, our guest speaker was unable to attend our meeting at the last minute due to a family emergency. We hope to invite him back to a future gathering. However, on Sunday, March 8th we will have a guest speaker in Religion in Life (10:00 a.m. in the Courtyard Room) talking about Buddhist mediation and mindfulness. Don’t miss it!

Men’s Bible & Brew Tuesday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Michael’s in St. Michael’s Youth Room. Come with a beverage or snack to share.

Thursday Morning Bible Study Thursday Morning Bible Study meets from 9:30—10:30 a.m. in Classroom I. St Michael’s Going Green St Michael’s is going green! Here is a list of what we have done so far:

Replaced our aging boiler with a high efficiency model.

Replaced aging light fixtures throughout the church with energy efficient LEDs

Installed setback thermostats

Switched to “time of day” electric metering. (This doesn’t save energy but does save us some green dollars)

Installed recycling bins throughout the church

So far we have saved about $8,500 and reduced our carbon emissions by almost 100,000 pounds every year!

We continue to look for ways to help the environment and save the church money through

better management of resources. If you have ideas please contact Neal Chapman, Thor

Wagstrom, Barry Eliason or any member of the Property Committee or Green Team. For a

more detailed description of what we have done so far contact the church office and ask for

the “Going Green” paper.

Council Corner The St. Michael’s Church Council had a retreat at Chi Rho camp near Annandale on Friday evening, February 7 and Saturday, February 8. Thrivent Choice Dollars Those who hold policies with Thrivent Financial have the ability to allocate Thrivent Choice Dollars to their home congregations or non-profit organizations as an additional means of sup-port or giving. Funds for this quarter must be allocated by individuals by March 31, 2020. Feel free to log on to your account and go to Thrivent Choice Dollars; you can select St. Michael’s as your recipient. If you do not use on-line access to your account, you can call your Thrivent Representative. This is another great way to support our ministry and work in the world. ~ Submitted by the Finance Committee and Church Council

Volunteer Opportunity Are you interested in travel and service? If so, consider joining the Habitat and Thrivent Worldwide team I'm leading this summer in Budapest, Hungary from July 18-25, 2020. I have seen home-building teams change the lives of families and communities. The trips have changed my life, too. Our team includes those who have been part of local Habitat Build teams and those without previous building experience. The team has room for 7 more members and will be first-come, first-served. The trip cost is $1,060 for Benefit members of Thrivent Financial and $1,560 for Associate members and non-members. Roundtrip airfare to Budapest is additional. Trip cost is tax-deductible in most cases. If you're interested in learning more, please contact laurie.krachmer[at]yahoo[dot]com.

Yogadevotion The next eight-week session of Yogadevotion will begin on March 2 and run through April 20. The class is on Monday nights at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Beginners are always welcome.

Bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothing. The cost is $72 and can be paid at the first class. Make checks payable to St. Michael’s and write Yogadevotion on the memo line.

For questions contact: kathynockleby[at]gmail[dot}com.
