These days, it seems, almost everyone is giving up something for Lent. Time Magazine noted last year that “The customs that surround the Lenten Season have a quality to them that transcend religion.” People can pick up advice on what to “give up” for Lent on many social media outlets from organizations that are not rooted in any Christian beliefs. For instance, PopSugar has a list of unhealthy foods to give up for Lent and the International Business Times has a list of abstaining suggestions for business travelers. But according to the Church’s idea of Lent, sacrifice during this season ought to include compassion and care for others. As the early Christian mystic John Chrysostom put it, “No act of virtue can be great if it is not followed by advantage for others. Or maybe giving up eating lunch out a couple of times a week, and putting that money toward a hunger offering at your church?” We’ll help with the dilemma for Lent 2020. If you’re interested in volunteering your time, Liz and I can make any number of suggestions for your volunteer hours. In addition, Offerings received during our Lenten Services on Wednesday evenings and with our Lenten piggy banks, will all go to our ELCA World Hunger Appeal – which insures that monies sent will be used in a most efficient and effective way. Giving Up On Lent Just as Mardis Gras has popularized the idea of partying hard on Fat Tuesday before Lent begins, many of the people who now observe Lent itself are not following strictly religious notions. Planned Giving Info Session for Adults at Kimball

Sunday morning, March 22 nd at 10:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall

You have been a faithful steward for your church during your lifetime. Proper information and preparation – Planned Giving - will allow you to continue your stewardship and giving to Kimball far into the future! This is an exciting time to be the church in Kannapolis. Please think about the part that you want to play in

the future of this congregation. You have the opportunity to continue to support this ministry

in many ways; naming your church as a beneficiary in your estate plan or the making

of an endowment gift can assure your continued participation in the life and mission

of Kimball for years to come.

Sunday morning, March 22 at 10:00 AM , we will welcome Stephanie Burke from the NC

Synod to our congregation, as she conducts a seminar on Planned Giving. Stephanie will be giving a brief presentation during the Sunday School hour, but will offer anyone the oppor-tunity to make an appointment for a session with her at a date/time of your convenience.

Looking to the future, a strong endowment will be a necessity for any church moving forward, indeed, good stewardship requires us to think

of the future. Stephanie will help us think together about how we might strengthen the mission and ministry of this church we love. Simply put we encourage every member to consider Kimball Lutheran Church in your

Planned Giving. Martin Luther once said “The heart of the giver makes the gift dear and precious.” We would ask that you consider

those ministries/missions at Kimball that are most dear to you. And then consider what

provision you might establish to see that these ministries grow and prosper.

For more information about this session or about Planned Giving at Kimball you can contact Pastor John or members of the

Planned Giving Team: Laura Abernathy, Howard Bentley, Eric Jones, and Lauren

Nichols. We hope you will join us on March 22 nd.

2020 Lenten Schedule to

focus on Facing the Cross For 2020, our Lenten Theme will

set our focus on the cross of Jesus Christ that lies before us. As we face the cross during these 40 Days, we also face certain aspects in our lives which are not always in line with the cross. We come to terms with them in this series through the cross of Christ – who came to save us and give us life in all of it’s fullness. Each of these worship services begins at 6:30 PM, and will be about 30 minutes in length. We will be using the beautiful Holden Evening Prayer Service by Marty Haugen. A nursery is provided for each Wednesday Night Service. Remember that Lenten Meals, for those who sign up for them, will be from 5:45-6:20 each Wednesday during this Season. If you have any questions about our schedule, please contact the Church Office.

The dates and themes for Wednesday evenings are:

♦ March 4- Facing Temptation (Hebrews 4:14-15)

♦ March 11 – Facing Our Fears (Isaiah 41:10)

♦ March 18 – Facing Our Selfishness (St. Matthew 6:19-21)

♦ March 25 – Facing One Another (Ephesians 4:31-32)

♦ April 1 – Facing Suffering (Romans 8:18-19)

MILESTONE FOR A MEMBER! Our congratulations to faithful Kimball Member Richard Dorton , who will have completed 15 years of dedicated service with Wal-Mart on March 7th. During that time Richard was twice named Employee of the Month. We rejoice with him and with Mary, his mother, at this important milestone at work!

CARVER Corner1 We are collecting new or gently used children's books for ages 5-12 years old. Our goal is to give each student at Carver Elementary 3-5 books at the end of the school year so they can read over the summer. Here are some ways you can help. As you are shopping, please pick up 1-2 books for any grade level. There is a bin on the ramp for you to put books in as you collect them. Or you can donate money to the Carver fund (please let Fran Patterson know that you gave) and she will purchase books for you. We use Scholastic.com to order books and can usually get them at a very reasonable price. Any questions, please contact Fran Patterson @ [email protected].

Greetings from Preschool:

The children are excited to begin exploring the season of Spring this month! The children will learn about Plants, Zoo Animals, the Earth, Insects and Bugs, Rainbows and of course Spring! They will be engaging in activities that teach them about God’s creation. Last month we had a field trip to Discovery Place Kids in Huntersville and we had a blast! It was nice to spend the morning with our families. We still have openings for the 2019-2020 School Year. Registration information is available in the church office or online at kimballchurch.org. If you have any questions about Kimball Lutheran Preschool, please call the church at 704-933-4101. The upcoming 2020-2021 school year information and Summer Camp information will be coming out soon. Our supply needs currently are: wipes and double-sided tape. We appreciate your consistent and generous support of our preschool program. We also appreciate all your prayers as we continue to work with our children and families, sharing the love of Jesus Christ.

THANK YOUS From KMLC Youth!

The Youth would like to Thank the congregation for continually supporting Youth Ministries in our

congregation. The Valentine’s Dinner and Dance was very well attended and we collected a total of $2000, which is the most that we have ever made! Those funds will be split between LYO, Agape Day

Camp and 2021 ELCA Youth Gathering Also, a big thank you to the Joe Gribble Sunday School class for the Shrove Tuesday Pancake

dinner. Over $800 was collected and will be used for our Summer Mission Trip!
