“A Class Action” Exhibit Opening Reception September 22

In March 1945, five fathers in Orange County, California, brought a class-action lawsuit against four school districts on behalf of their own children and 5,000 other children forced to attend segregated “Mexican schools.” A traveling exhibit tells the story of their landmark lawsuit, and reveals how community organizing and grassroots activism can produce positive change in schools and communities across the United States. The exhibition includes a gallery of large professional museum style panels—

CCC #2 Community College for Online Colleges with BEST ROI

WalletHub analysts recently ranked Coastline Community College number two (2) in the top 20 online community colleges offering the highest return on educational investment. The analysis started with a first look at the ranking of community colleges listed by best ROI within the first five years with data from CollegeMeasures, a database which compiles information about 2 and 4 year colleges. Among the

highest ROI colleges listed, it was researched as to which offered online courses and programs. Colleges listed which had expanded into 4 year colleges were eliminated. Data from the National Center for Education Statistics was utilized to determine this as well as to provide average annual tuition from the 2015 to 2016 college year. Costs can vary year to year as well as with the number of classes. The best ROI measure is based on data from all students attending the college, online and in-person. All colleges ranked are 2-year Public colleges with distance education offerings through at least one branch of the same college. Way to go Coastline! First Annual Rustler Welcome Day Greets Incoming Freshmen

Kicking off the new school year, Golden West College hosted their First Annual Rustler Welcome Day on August 24th for new incoming students. Over 300 first-year students were warmly welcomed in the outdoor amphitheater by GWC president Wes Bryan along with Chad Bowman, Director of the Accessibility Center for Education, and Ben Olague, Outreach Program Specialist. Students were then treated to tours throughout the campus by members of ASGWC, and sat in on workshops to help prepare them for the school year. “The Buzz on Student Life,” “Financial Aid Survival Guide”, and “Finding the Perfect Career,” were a few of the all highly-attended workshops.

After lunch provided by The Habit Food Truck, students and parents visited student services booths, enjoyed music by AMP radio and played on the inflatables provided by Financial Aid in the quad. First-year GWC student Julian Martinez was big winner for the day, walking away with the grand prize laptop, donated by the GWC Foundation. As he claimed his prize, a smiling Martinez exclaimed, “I REALLY needed this!” Dean of Counseling Robyn Brammer, along with Nikki Phan, Counseling Staff Assistant coordinated the very successful first-time event. “We are building a stronger climate of prepared and connected students, and I could not be more proud to be a Rustler,” Brammer says.

Dick Tucker Field Dedication Ceremony Will Take Place September 17

The naming of Orange Coast College's Dick Tucker Football Field will become official on Sept. 17. The Pirates will host an event at the school's first home football game of the season, on Saturday, Sept. 17 against Ventura College, beginning at 6 p.m. A reception will be held prior to the start of the game at 4:30 p.m. on the Football Stadium Patio, and Coach Tucker will be recognized and honored with an unveiling of

the scoreboard with "Dick Tucker Field" at halftime. Tickets to the catered event cost $10 and proceeds will go toward supporting current OCC football players. Tucker coached at OCC for 23 seasons and served as the school's athletic director for 10 years before retiring in 1995. Along the way he guided the Pirates to two national titles (1963 and 1975) as well as four conference championships and six postseason/bowl appearances. His 129 career wins is the most in OCC history and in 2004, Tucker was inducted into the California Community College Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In 1996, Tucker was inducted into the Orange County Sports Hall of Fame and in 2007, he was inducted into the OCC Athletics Hall of Fame. Doug Bennett, OCC's executive director of college advancement, heard the requests of Tucker's family members as well as the thousands of former players and community members who wanted to see this honor take place. "The naming came about as a result of requests from alumni, community members and Coach Tucker's family after the 50th anniversary celebration for Dick's 1963 national championship Team and the 40th anniversary of his 1975 national championship team," Bennett said. The football stadium was opened in 1955 and was originally named Orange Coast College Stadium. In 1967, the stadium was renamed Harry Le Bard Stadium in honor of Harry R. Le Bard, a founding member of the Board of Trustees of the then Orange Coast Junior College District. In addition to the Pirates calling the stadium its home, it's also the site of numerous high school games as well as the home to Golden West College football. According to Bennett, the naming of Orange Coast College Football Field "Dick Tucker Field" has been endorsed by the Orange Coast College coaches, the Kinesiology and Athletics Division and the college's Institutional Advancement and Effectiveness Planning Council (IAEPC). Not wanting to bind the college and the district into perpetual naming of the football field this naming is recommended with the understanding that it would be subject to review in one generation (about 20-25 years). "I put a lot of wonderful years into Orange Coast College and I wouldn't change a thing," Tucker said. "When I first heard about the honor, I was surprised beyond belief. It is such a nice gesture, and I am so appreciative of everyone who helped make this happen."

I hope everyone had a great first week of the new Fall Semester! Having been on the campuses last Friday for the “All College Meetings”—the energy and excitement at each college was evident. We continued the annual tradition of delivering pizzas to the Admissions and Records offices at each college, as we know that the first week of classes is their busiest time of year, and stepping away for lunch can be a challenge.

This week parking lots were full, and students were busy on campus finding their classes, and interacting with faculty and staff—a good sign for a great semester ahead. At the same time, we are working hard to identify growth enrollment at our colleges. The District and the colleges traditionally have increased state revenues by increasing FTES (Full-time Equivalent Students) apportionment. However, under a recently adopted state formula, we are now limited to growth funds, no more than 1.51% and even that amount may be more than we are able to achieve this year. Whatever we can achieve to strengthen our budget will benefit and help additional students to earn certificates and degrees from one of the Coast Colleges. On Monday, we celebrate the Labor Day Holiday and we will have a day off to spend time with family and friends. It is also a day to reflect on the hard work of Americans, which tells the story of our country. I appreciate the hard work of our staff in Admissions and Records, Marketing, Outreach, Testing and everyone who works to get students in the classes. Thank you for all that you do. Enjoy the Labor Day weekend.
