Meet the puffin The puffin ...

• is a type of seabird that lives for months at sea.

• is able to fly and swim. It can flap its wings about 350 times a minute. It flies about 50 miles per hour.

• eats small fish that it catches by diving underwater.

• is called the "parrot of the sea" because of its colorful beak.

32-3 (92) Release Date: August 1-7

April it returns to rocky islands off Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland and other parts of the north Atlantic. There it breeds and raises its chicks.

• makes its nests in rock crevices or .. on soft ground. It keeps the same mate ~ and nest each year. Only one egg is i laid each year. ...

• was almost killed off in the United 1 'E

States by hunters in the 1800s. The ~ population increased after puffin @

hunting was outlawed. Today there are 1 about 15 million puffins around the ~ world. i

• has fluffy down under its thick top feathers. The down keeps the skin warm and dry.

• has webbed feet. • spends the winter on the open

waters of the north Atlantic Ocean. In

Puffins are different from pengUins. Puffins live in the Northern Hemisphere and penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere. Unlike the puffin, penguins have small wings and cannot fly. The penguin also does not have a colorful beak.

A Cool Thought: Think Penguins Western

We have shaded the areas where penguins live.

There are 17 different kinds of penguins. Not all of them live in the cold Antarctic. Some live much farther north.

These Magellanic penguins live outdoors at Sea World in California. Some penguins are able to live in warmer climates. Magellanic penguins can be found on the coast of South America. They are able to survive because they can find the food they need in the cold water offshore.

Rockhoppers are black and white but have streaks of yellow feathers above each eye. This rockhopper lives in the Penguin Encounter at Sea World of Florida.

Rockhoppers can be found off the coasts of South America, South Africa and New Zealand. Unlike most penguins, the rockhopper hops rather than waddles. Rockhoppers can jump as high as 4 feet out of water. They can jump as far as 6 feet on land.

The Adelie and the emperor are the two types of penguins that nest only in Antarctica.

The popular idea of what a penguin looks like comes from the cute little Adelie. This friendly and curious bird is very athletic. It can jump up to 6 feet out of the water.

• Penguins are birds that can't fly - but they almost do, underwater! They can

swim as fast as 15 miles per hour.

They have: • flipper-like small wings. • webbed feet. • streamlined bodies . • more feathers than most birds.

These feathers overlap like roof shingles to keep them warm and dry.

• bones that are heavier and more solid than most birds.

"

• Most penguins spend much of their time in the water. Only a few come

ashore every night. Others stay at sea for months. They

come ashore only to breed in large colonies called rookeries. They sleep in the water.

• Penguins swallow prey whole that they catch with their strong bills. They eat squid, fish and krill. Krill are small,

shrimp-like animals that swim in the cold waters.
