From the Inside Out

9:00-9:15 Welcome 9:15-10:30 Keynote

Brain Development: You ARE Making a Difference! Deborah McNeils The human brain is an amazing and complex organ that allows each of us to think, feel and act. The brain systems that regulate those activities are largely shaped by experience. This presentation provides you with an easy to understand overview of brain basics from birth through adulthood. You will be inspired by how much more you understand about how the brain impacts behavior and learning in school and in everyday family life!

Session 10:45-12:00 Pink or Blue? Deborah McNeils Gender Differences related to Learning: Implications for how brain differences can impact learning are included in this very fun and interesting presentation. Awareness of these differences creates the opportunity for you to have a clearer understanding and provide for the optimal development of both boys and girls brains. Using Ordinary Things for Extraordinary Fun With Toddlers Katie Harder & Cassandra Clark If you are looking for new ideas for toddlers, this is the session for you. Come join us for new ideas on how to engage your toddlers using the foundation of the PIWI (Parents Interacting with Intention) philosophy. This philosophy focuses on early development and how it’s built within significant relationships and daily routines, this comes about through interactions with others. In this interactive session you will get ideas and learn how to incorporate them and how to encourage parent/child play with families in your program. Exploring the Important Components of Literacy for Young Children. Stephanie Lulich The session will be an introduction to all the vital components of literacy in the early childhood world. We will discover the vital components, engage in discussion around current practices in literacy and network together to learn strategies to support literacy in your classroom/family childcare setting.

Supporting Breastfeeding Moms Tiffany Yankowiak Come and learn about creating a breastfeeding friendly environment that supports breastfeeding mothers. You will also learn to offer opportunities for family engagement, healthy child outcomes, and positive marketing for your program. After all steps are completed child care providers are recognized by the Wisconsin Breastfeeding Coalition and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services as “Breastfeeding Friendly.” Find out how this could help you achieve YoungStar points!

Let’s Get Moving! Jessie Millington This session will provide training on the implementation of physical activity in your everyday activities for all ages. The great thing about promoting physical activity in education programs is that it doesn’t have to be another thing on a provider’s plate. Physical activity has a place in nearly every major piece of the current context, In Wisconsin’s early care and education field.

Session 1:00 – 2:15

When Kids Feel “Inside Out” Amy Carriere In this session, we will explore how to use books to understand emotional literacy. When kids have the words to express their feelings we can decrease their challenging behaviors. We will look at a variety of books that promote emotional literacy and strategies on how to use them more effectively. Getting the Most Out of Your Accreditation Journey Celeste Swoboda National Association of Family Child Care Accreditation is designed to celebrate the quality you have already achieved and to support you towards continued growth and success. If you are committed to quality care and looking for a way to improve your program, or validate the current quality of your program, Accreditation can help you achieve your goal. Enchanting Family Child Care Environments Brenda Flannery This training is a two part session. We will share strategies on planning, designing and supporting young children's development in family child care centers. We will discuss theory and key messages related to the learning environment as well as explore important components of a quality program. Photos in the training will showcase examples from family child care programs in Wisconsin.

Reaching Out to Children with Challenges Sue McKenzie When working with young children, we all deal with challenging children. Sometimes it is behavioral but often is it something else. Is it a speech and language delay? Is it sensory issues? Does the child have a disability? We all want to do what’s best for “our kids”, but how? Sue will give you some tips and strategies on dealing with children that just don’t seem to fit the traditional mold.

Super Snack Recipes Cathy Meindel & Dotty Lillo Have you been looking for some new snack ideas? Join us in creating your own snack. We are also going to take a glance at the 2017 revised CACFP meal pattern. Come and find out more about the advantages of being on the food program and meet the CACFP home visitor from Western Dairyland / Child Care Partnership.

Engaging PLAY Through Outdoor Learning Interest Areas! Amanda Linden and Brandy Metcalf

Children spend a substantial amount of time outside so it's important that you make the most out of that time. By effectively using the outdoor

environment, you can provide a stimulating resource for learning, not a recess from learning. This training will walk you through setting up your outdoor environment with stimulating and meaningful outdoor learning interest areas. It will also provide you with lots of pictures and ideas that will make you excited to get started in your program!

Session 2:30 – 3:45

Challenging Behaviors Amy Carriere When children are fully engaged, interested, and excited about their environment they have less opportunity to engage in challenging behavior. In this session, we will discuss how increasing children’s engagement leads to decreased challenging behaviors. We will cover ways to measure engagement and strategies to bring children to a higher level of engagement. Singing Through the Day Celeste Swoboda Have you ever found yourself singing a song at the right moment and then you noticed that you have grabbed the children's attention? Singing creates a atmosphere for the children in your classroom that makes them feel secure. Singing will help them develop language and the enjoyment of singing the rest of their lives. If you would like to develop your own skills through organization of schedule, bringing in chants and nursery rhymes during your day this is the workshop for you.

Enchanting Family Child Care Environments Brenda Flannery Continued from 1:00 - part 2 See description from session 2, participants must attend both sessions. (The first 25 paid registrations will receive a Fat Brain toy, at the completion of this double session.) The Importance of Dramatic Play- It’s More Than Just Housekeeping Robin Mainhardt Which WI Model Early Learning Standards do you use in your dramatic play areas? Are you meeting the developmental goals of the children in your program? Do you long for a more interesting and skill building dramatic play area in your program? Are you willing to share your successful ideas with others? We will answer these questions and more during this workshop. You will learn the importance of environment, how to "set the stage", skills children work with as they take part in dramatic play experiences and how to tie this all in with the standards to make your centers come alive and increase learning. With a little gathering of supplies, you can use many of these ideas in your program, whether in family or group settings. Come ready to share, play and help children learn. Handcrafted Learning Lisa Cottrell Join in with this exciting and interactive class, learning to how to make handcrafted materials for your program.
