FROM THE GRAPEVINE... 3 Iain Duguid writes, “ Are you settling for a vision that is too small in your life? Are you choosing the easy option because you don’t really believe God can bring about something great in your life? Yes, God sometimes calls us to be faithful in the little things, but is that really your calling, or are you afraid to hope for anything more? And what about your church? Do you expect to see God do great things there? Do you pray for God to do great things there, or are you content just to survive? All too often we don’t really expect God to do anything dramatic, do we? It seems too difficult to imagine.” What an interesting question, “Are you settling for a vision that is too small in your life?” David was a shepherd boy. He was the youngest in his family. He had no resume. He had no trophies on his mantle. But he became a giant slayer, a king, and a writer of Scripture. The smallest of men led the smallest of nations to a place of greatness. Such is the power of a call, vision, and faith inspired by God. When David faced Goliath the Bible tells us that he said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted. This day the LORD will deliver you up into my hands, and I will strike you down and remove your head from you. And I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the LORD does not deliver by sword or by spear; for the battle is the LORD’S and He will give you into our hands.” Samuel 17:45-47 (NASB95). The awesome faith and vision which resided in the heart of young David is truly amazing. David refused to settle for a vision that was too small because he knew that he served a great God capable of great things. What does your vision say about your God? William Carey, the renown missionary to India, worked for seven years before leading a single person to faith in Christ. But by the time his work was complete he had put together a team of missionaries that translated the Bible into 34 Asian languages, started the still influential Serampore College, began churches, established 19 mission stations, formed 100 rural schools encouraging the education of girls, started the Horticultural Society of India, championed the cause of the poor and disenfranchised, and led thousands to faith in Christ. Furthermore Carey’s life and example inspired thousands to answer the call of missions. Carey’s life motto was, “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.” He refused to settle for a small vision. Hebrews 11:1 (NASB95) says, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Are you settling for a vision that is too small? Open your eyes to what God can do. He still does His greatest work in unexpected places through unexpected people in unexpected ways. Bro. Shep
