The education of children goes way beyond teaching them to read and write at one end of their school career and preparing them for an exit exam at the other. Yes, academics are important, but the many and diverse skills learnt whilst at school are equally so.

This past week we have seen many of the other skills displayed. Our Grade 11s enjoyed a social event. All three phases participated in their respective Athletics meetings, and we celebrated the successes of our musicians at the “On a High Note” concert. Truly a diverse range of activities, but all important in contributing to the develop-ment of the whole child.

Developing talent and being involved in activities outside the class-room afford us the opportunity to learn life skills. It also affords us as parents and teachers the opportunity to see another side to a child. An unhealthy emphasis on progress or perfection in one area, to the exclusion of others, often leads to stress and anxiety.

Whilst we can celebrate the success of athletes such as AmberSchlebusch and others, many of us will not be able to emulate it.This does not, however, preclude us from firstly celebrating with them and secondly having fun as we participate ourselves. And the girls had fun! From the outfits to the cheering and the participation, the face paints and the war cries, all of which contributed to the overall atmosphere. It never ceases to amaze me just how much fun the girls do have.

One could not attend the “On a High Note” concert without being conscious of the talent of those who participated. Mrs Nicola Early helped us, however, to focus on not only the talent, but also on the commitment and hard work that is required in order to achieve excellence. Talent on its own is not enough, and those who wish to excel, have to set their minds to achieving their goal, and often have to make sacrifices in order to do so. I could not help but wonder at the growth in complexity in pieces: from those beginning a magical, musical journey to those who have made great strides along the path and all were equally proud of their achievements. Our Music department consists of talented and equally committed teachers and I thank them for their contributions.

Then to our Grade 11s who looked lovely and whose excitement on arrival at their dance was palpable. They not only looked lovely, but they were also well-behaved and still had fun. The cohesive spirit, which exists in this grade, bodes well for a happy matric year!

Were any of these activities a waste of time? No, they were not and the fun and the memories made may well be remembered beyond what was learnt in the classroom on those days. I encourage our girls to grasp the opportunities offered beyond the classroom, rather than focusing solely on one aspect.

From our ChaplainHe jumped up, stood on his feet, and began to walk! Then, walking, leap-ing, and praising God, he went into the Temple with them. Acts 3:8

This week I read the Grade Rs a bible story about a paralysed man who begged Jesus’ friend, Peter, for money. I stopped the story to ask the girls why he would have to ask for money. They suggested he needed it for medical treatment, including saving up to buy himself a wheelchair. When I asked what 'else' he might need money for, one concluded that he probably "wanted to have lots of turns on a merry-go-round'. What a great response! And when I told the girls that, through Peter, Jesus healed his legs so he could walk again, they thought it was the best news ever! We all hopped and skipped around the classroom imagining how the man must have felt. There was total acceptance that God is able to do amazing things that we can't explain, and uncompli-cated joy for an unnamed man from long ago. As we grow up we learn that we, and our world, are complicated. But once in a while, it's worth admiring the simple sweetness of childlike trust. It's worth putting it into practice in the way we look to our Heavenly Father for provision and solace, and in choosing to treat each other's victories with joy!

Meet our Staff

Meet our Alumna

I joined DGC in 2003 after previously working in the bank. I have two delightful boys who attended St Henry’s and after completing their degrees are nowworking.

After a long deliberation, my husband and I are relocating to the UK, which is a rather scary proposition at our age but feel this is the right time for us.

It has been a pleasure working here and I have made so many wonderful friends, which I am so going to miss. The finance team at Trust House are amazing and are the most wonderful people I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I think the only time you really appreciate things in your life is when you don’thave them anymore and that is what I feel about DGC and my Trust House 'girls'.

As seen on the cover of Get It Durban, this month, is our very own Vanessa Marawa (Class of 1996) who shares tips on being fab, fit and healthy. Many of us might remember Vanessa as the winner of the first season of Survivor South Africa: Panama. She survived 29 days and scooped R1million for her efforts. That grit and determination, which is typical of a 'College girl', has stood her in good stead for her many roles as an influential entrepreneur, model, brand ambassador, and MC. She is also well-known for her popular mid-morning slot on Vuma FM. When reflecting on the days on Survivor, she believes that her win led her to her passion for radio. Vanessa was previously the Face of Clere, and is currently an ambassador for SuperHair and Latural Hair.

Some of Vanessa’s other passions in life include mental and physical fitness. With the rise in people facing mental health issues, mental health is close to her heart. Currently, she is also busy with launching the Vanessa Marawa Challenge with her trainer to encourage men and women of her age group to join as a way of reclaiming some time for them-selves. She lives in Morningside with her two pets – Marmite and Zena. Her advice to jug-gling life and work stress is to live in the moment as it helps to put things into perspective.

Vanessa’s motto for this year is, “restore, heal and thrive”.

This is very exciting for the future of DGC Hockey and its partnership with the Academy.

Matches vs Port Natal on Wednesday, 4 September:In an effort to improve their hockey, Port Natal requested a fixture against College.
