Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome to the Spring Bulletin. It has been another busy and successful term for St Anne’s with our students showing once again how talented they are in so many areas of school life and representing our school so well.

This term, students have had the opportunity to reflect on the Stations of the Cross and to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation as part of their Lenten journey. During Lent, we are supporting The Catholic Children’s Society Crisis Fund. This is a fund that has been set up to help families in exceptional circumstances and provide financial help to them. Headteachers in the Diocese of Westminster will be able to apply to this fund to support families in their schools. I hope that you will contact me, in confidence, if you feel that you are facing a crisis and may need to access this fund. We are hoping to raise £1000 for this fund during Lent and Barclays Bank have agreed to match-fund so that our overall contribution will be £2000. I am grateful to students and staff for their generosity and contribution to our Lenten appeal.

I am delighted to report that St Anne’s Catholic High School has won two SSAT Educational Outcomes Awards for exceptional attainment and progress. The Catholic Life of the School

Our Sixth Form Fairtrade team started us off this Lent with an Assembly to the whole school to promote Fairtrade Fortnight. Their focus this year was on chocolate and raising awareness about injustices that cocoa farmers suffer, for example not being paid a fair wage for their produce. We learned that the cocoa farmer only gets 6% of the money from an average chocolate bar whereas the chocolate companies get 70% of the money. The team held extra Fairtrade stalls during the fortnight and have been successfully promoting more Fairtrade products. Thank you to everyone who supported Fairtrade Fortnight!

Our whole school Lenten appeal has been to raise money for the Catholic Children’s Society (CCS) Crisis Fund and, to enable students and staff to participate in the traditional Lenten observances of praying, fasting and giving to

others, we have continued our school tradition of ‘Soup and Roll’ Fridays. Students and staff can opt to give up their usual lunch and instead have a cup of vegetable soup with a bread roll which costs £1. We have also given prayer cards and encouraged students to pray together before they have their soup. All the bread rolls have been donated by Warburtons and a member of staff has offered to cover the costs of the soup and the cups so all money raised can go to the Crisis Fund. Our target is £1000 which Barclays Bank will match and at the end of week 3 we are on target with approximately £600 raised. It is good to see how many of the school community are participating. We were

delighted to have Katie Waring from the CCS for a whole-site assembly who explained to the students that headteachers of Catholic schools can apply for money from the crisis fund to help a student whose family is experiencing financial difficulty. The money is to help with essential items for example, uniform. It was good to have the explanation and encouragement to students. Katie will be coming back to serve soup and rolls to the Lower Site in the last week of our Lenten appeal.

The CCS focus for secondary schools this year has been ‘being a good social neighbour’ and how to use social media safely and responsibly. All students in the school have had a lesson on this focus and have been given a letter to take home which includes a parents’ guide to social media including different apps and some advice on safety for children. On 18th March 2015, we attended the annual Good Samaritan Mass Westminster Cathedral celebrated by Cardinal Vincent Nichols. The Mass was to celebrate and thank Catholic schools for their support of the Catholic Children’s Society, especially in fund-raising for the Crisis Fund. It was also a privilege for four of our students to serve at the Mass.

CAFOD Bike Ride Against Poverty 2015

This year’s Pedal Against Poverty will take place on Sunday 7th June. We would like to invite parents as well. I am sure it will be a day of fun. Pedal Against Poverty is a 10 mile ride from Cheshunt to Broxbourne and back, with the aim of raising money for CAFOD’s long term development projects in the developing world. The ride is off-road, following a scenic route on gravel towpaths alongside the River Lea through the Lee Valley Country Park. The route is generally very flat and suitable for most, whether you are a novice or an experienced rider. At Broxbourne, the midway point, there will be time for a community picnic for all to enjoy. Catholic Life of the School Working PartyThe working party on Catholic Life of the School has been continuing to explore what it means to ‘love our neighbour’ with a focus on older people. The aim has been to raise awareness of what life is like for older people in our local community, and to try to help our young people to increase their understanding and empathy. One of the factors most effecting older people is loneliness, and so earlier in the year we had our first tea party hosted by Year 10 students and we will be holding

another tea party in the summer term. There will also be another visit to Azalea Court nursing home with Year 9 students. Due to a growing number of older people suffering from dementia, we will also be holding a dementia awareness week in school during the national awareness week 18th-24th May with the aim of raising awareness and increasing understanding. In the RE lessons we will focus on the commandment from the Old Testament to ‘honour your father and mother’ and Jesus’ commandment to ‘love your neighbour’ and we’ll be particularly considering our responsibilities to respect and care for older people. This cross-curriculum week will also include lessons in English, History, Science and Art and will culminate in a special prayer service at lunchtime on Friday 22nd May to pray for older people, those suffering from dementia and all those who care for them. Our Lenten Journey

The Catholic Life of the School

We mark our Lenten journey in all sorts of ways. Students have the opportunity to pray, fast and support charities. Year 8, Year 9 and Sixth Form girls have had services of reconciliation with the opportunity for individual confessions. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is an opportunity for the students not only to look deeply into their lives but also to move forward into the future filled with hope and confidence while becoming better friends to each other.

Year 7 learn about the Sacrament of Baptism

Stations of the CrossEach form group has had the opportunity to pray the Stations of the Cross during RE lessons.

The Stations of the Cross is a popular devotion to reflect the passion and death of Jesus on his way to Calvary. Many Christians practise this devotion and they have a special significance among Roman Catholics. They were held in the Holy Family convent chapel for the Lower School and in the school chapel for the Upper.

Flame CongressA group of our Sixth Form and Year 11 students attended this National Youth Event at Wembley Arena on Saturday 7th March 2015. It possessed a wonderful mix of exuberance and powerful stillness, with 10,000 young people from across the country attending. As well as world class speakers, the heart of the day was worship. It was a really inspirational day which helped us all reflect on and celebrate our faith.

This spring term in Religious Education, we learnt about the Sacrament of Baptism.

The students of 7T were given a homework task of finding out about their own baptism. Some of the ways in which the girls chose to present information about their own baptism was through the use of creative posters and informative PowerPoint slides.

We were also very lucky enough to see some of the baptismal garments and candles along with special photographs of the ceremonies and celebrations.

Taking Time to Remember God’s Many Gifts to Us

The Catholic Life of the School

Students in Year 8 have been learning about the Mass. During a lesson on the offertory, they were given the opportunity to reflect on the gifts that God has given to them, to their friends and family, and to the world in general.

The activity afforded the girls the opportunity to remember that God has blessed each of us with different talents and gifts, and that we can often take these wonderful things for granted.

Some St Anne’s students also considered the ways in which they could use the abilities, talents and gifts that God has given them freely to bless and improves the lives of those around them.

Considering the Conscience9M and 9J have been exploring what conscience is to them as part of their RE work.

For homework, students were asked to produce a piece of work, in whatever medium they preferred, which reflected what they understood conscience to be.

The girls responded by producing a vast array of posters, PowerPoint shows and speeches. During lessons there was an opportunity for each of them to share their piece of work.

It was fantastic to hear of girls conducting experiments to support their ideas of conscience and researching what philosophers and other religions believe conscience to be. Well done to all students for producing so many well-considered, thought-provoking presentations.

Little Miss Late!

Punctuality is a life skill that everyone needs to learn. However, some Key Stage 3 girls at St Anne’s have taken this to a new level! Reproduced below are some genuine explanations that students have given regarding their lateness during the Spring Term.

“Wrong bus stop”

“I got stuck in the lift.”

“Long line for bus.”

“No-one to take me.”

“Was not organised.”

“Car did not start!”

“My brother’s leg was stuck.”

“Three buses missed me.”

“Late because awake.”

“Coz of my dad!”

“Big traffic stopped a road.”

“Three buses missed me.”

“Car was on fire.”

This is a call out to all Parents who do not currently receive our ParentMail emails. With the increasing use of internet and emails, we still have students, for whom we do not have an email address registered for their Parent/Carer. This means that for those students we are not able to send out instant emails and notices home. If you do not receive ParentMail emails from us, please get in touch and give us a valid email address so that we can update our system. Thank you.

Lost Property

Please ensure that all items of your daughter’s clothing items are clearly labelled with her name.

There are over 1,000 students in the school all wearing the same uniform. It is disheartening to see the number of garments that are handed in and never claimed, especially coats, scarfs and gloves. Items of clothing that have names marked in them are always returned to the students.

Lost property goes on display at the end of each term but hardly anything is ever claimed. Clothing that is not claimed after this is donated to charity.

Travelling between Edmonton,Tottenham and Enfield

We expect Transport for London (TfL) to take over the Liverpool Street to Enfield Town train service from 31st May. This means that a student fare will be 85p in the morning (peak) and 75p in the afternoon. You may want to consider your daughter using this service instead of struggling to get on the W8 bus, particularly in the afternoon. Although not free of charge, as with the buses, the cost may be attractive to you.

Free School Meals EntitlementNot sure whether your daughter is entitled to Free School Meals? It’s easy to check and it can also bring a lot of additional money to the school. All you have to do is email [email protected] or phone the school and we will assist you. It will only take you a minute or two. What have you got to lose?

Safe CyclingIf your daughter would like to cycle to school your local Council may offer lessons. We can provide you with a contact; just drop a line to [email protected] or telephone 020 8920 5228. Both our sites now have cycle parking available for students, staff and visitors.

Sixth Form Centre ‘Buy A Brick’ Appeal

The St Anne’s Sixth Form Centre Buy-A-Brick Appeal has now launched and you will receive a special Buy-A-Brick Appeal leaflet. The campaign will appear on your ParentPay Account. Of course, this is voluntary but we hope you will buy a brick or two. In the last two weeks we have received very good news: we can now complete the whole building in one go. However, this means that we will need your help even more to make it into a really fantastic Sixth Form Centre for your daughter(s). Mr Goldbart, School Business Manager

Our exciting new Sixth Form Centre building is coming along at a cracking pace!

Promoting Good Health and Academic Success

Parents - Teenage Sleep

The Importance of SleepParents know that sleep is important for their children. However, they might not know just how vital getting a healthy night’s sleep can be. Even if they did, how does a parent convince their teenage son or daughter that they need to go to bed earlier? At a recent parents’ evening, a concerned mother described a scenario which I think is becoming increasingly common in households. Her Year 11 daughter said that she studied and revised best between the hours of midnight and 2.00am. I put forward that this may be the habit that her daughter had created and that it now felt natural but it was a habit that was most likely going to negatively impact her focus during the school day and ultimately her results. The primary consequences of poor sleep among children and adolescents are impaired learning and academic performance, behavioural and emotional problems, and worse health, including obesity.

How much sleep do teenagers need?Teenagers require eight to ten hours’ sleep a night, say sleep experts and yet one in three teenagers get an average of between five and six hours per night. The major developmental change that happens during adolescence is when their body’s clock moves to a later timing for sleep and this is thought to account for about one hour of a change. The most dramatic change noticed by researchers is another two hours of sleep loss and is due to social factors such as work pressures and access to technology. As with parents, balancing these time pressures is hard work. My bedroom in the eighties looked very different from the bedroom of a modern teenager, in fact I think the only electronic device was a radio alarm clock (I thought it was awesome). Scientists have established that

just like a healthy diet and exercise, sleep is critical for children to stay healthy, grow, learn, do well in school, and function at their best. They reckon that screens and other electronic devices are to blame and advise placing strict limits on the use of TVs, mobile phones or computers in a child’s bedroom during the evening. Nearly one in four children admit to falling asleep more than once a week while watching TV, listening to music or during other technical distractions. Virtually all children now have a phone, computer or TV in their bedroom.

To help meet these challenges, families can work together to make sleep a priority, so that everyone has the opportunity to sleep as much as they need in a safe, quiet, comfortable environment. Perhaps not surprisingly, a recent study showed that reducing screen time is paramount.

Our Top Ten Teenage Sleep Tips! 1. 4 No screen time in the hour leading up to lights out. 2. 4 Read for 10-20 minutes before going to sleep. 3. 4 No eating, rigorous exercise or caffeine in the hour leading up to bedtime. 4. 4 Agree on a bedtime and wake-up time and stick to them. 5. 4 Get up promptly in the morning – no lie ins. 6. 4 Limit naps in the daytime. 7. 4 Open the curtains as soon as you wake. 8. 4 Have lower-wattage lights in the bedroom. 9. 4 Go outside and get exercise during daylight.10. 4 Do homework early in the evening. Don’t leave it till late.

National Citizen Service (NCS) is a once-in-a lifetime opportunity for students in Year 11. It’s a government-funded programme which helps young people build skills for work and life and is also an opportunity for participants to meet new people and connect with their local community. Through a three part programme of activities taking place during the summer holidays, October or February half-terms, NCS participants take on new challenges including outdoor activities, skills training from industry professionals, and leading social action campaigns in their local community. The programme is recognised by UCAS and can strengthen university, college and job applications.

In your area, NCS is delivered by The Challenge which is the country’s largest provider of NCS. Since 2009, 126,000 young people have taken part in NCS. Nine out of ten previous participants believe NCS has given them the chance to develop skills that will be useful to them in the future. In 2015 there are 16,000 places available in Greater London and Surrey. Over the past three years, 93 students from St Anne’s Catholic High School for Girls have taken part. A representative from The Challenge will be delivering presentations to Year 11 students soon.

National Citizen Service is coming to Year 11

Although we at St Anne’s have agreed that students may bring mobile phones to school for use on the way to and from home, these must always be switched off in school.

We do not expect to see or hear them once a student comes onto the school site. If we do, the usual sanctions will apply.

Students bring their phones into school at their own risk and we will not spend time searching for any that become lost or stolen.

Children with good numeracy skills are more likely to stay in education, be in work as adults, and earn more money throughout their lives. Helping your child feel confident about Maths now gives them a head start. As a parent/carer, you give your child their first experience of Maths. Even if you yourself don’t feel confident with Maths, you can still make a huge difference to your child’s numeracy confidence and ability.

“Being numerate is the ability to deal with the Maths we need for everyday life.”

Here are some examples of what we mean by Numeracy:

4 being able to manage family budgets – credit cards, offers at supermarkets, etc;

4 being able to estimate – in all kinds of situations, e.g. journey speed, time and distance, roughly how much a bill will be or your expected bank balance at the end of the month;

4 being able to critically assess statistics used by advertisers or politicians.

Top Numeracy Tips4 Be positive about maths! Never say things like “I can’t do Maths” or “I hated Maths at school,” as your child might start to think like that themselves.

4 Point out the maths in everyday life. Include your child in activities involving Maths such as using money, cooking and travelling.

4 Praise your child for effort rather than talent - this shows them that by working hard they can always improve.

Congratulations to all our Jack Petchey Awards winners who attended the Jack Petchey Awards Evening on Monday 2nd March at the Millfield Theatre. All of our winners were presented with a certificate and a medallion in recognition of their achievements. They were nominated by their peers in school for something that they achieved either in school or in the local community. Congratulations and well done to all of you.

The Leader Award went to Mr Patel for all his work on the ‘Teach Meet’ initiative to bring schools together in sharing good practice and for raising the profile of Design and Technology in schools. He has worked very hard for the school to put this initiative in place and has shown a great deal of determination and commitment.

It was a very enjoyable evening for all the award winners, parents and staff that attended. A big thank you also to the St Anne’s Gospel Choir who opened the evening with an outstanding performance!

On Tuesday 17th March, the St Anne’s Debate Team took part in the Final of the Mayor’s Award for debating competition. This was held in the Mayor’s Chambers in the Civic Centre and was between the schools that had made it through from the Semi-Final. We had to debate one prepared topic that we were given in advance, and after winning that round, it was on to the final debate. The final ended with St Anne’s taking second place in the Borough with Zahra Alawoad being chosen by the judges to be part of the mixed team to represent Enfield at the Regional Final in the summer. The girls all put in a lot of hard work, commitment and enthusiasm into preparing for the debates and were a real credit to the school. Congratulations and well done, girls! Friends of St Anne’s - FOSAWelcome from the New Chair

Hello! Firstly, I think we would all like to thank the previous committee members, Kiran Ramkinsoon and Alex Wilson, for all their hard work getting FOSA up and running and helping raise so much money for the school. The money that FOSA has generated under their control has so far helped fund the building of the new Sixth Form building (which is well underway) and also paid for sun shades and canopies for the Lower Site playground and the School Minibus, along with various other school equipment.

I would like to welcome our new Treasurer, Licia Sinnot, and our new Secretary, Michelle Carolan, who will be helping me in my new role as Chair of FOSA.

The Friends of St Anne’s was set up a few years ago to help build links between the school and the families of our pupils. We aim to bring families, friends and staff together to help strengthen our school community and also raise funds which we hope will benefit all these groups. All families are automatically members of the association when they join the school. We’re very lucky that the staff are so supportive and are actively involved with the work we do.

To make the events we organise successful, we need as many people as possible to help. There are several ways in which you can be involved, so please do what you can to support your daughter’s school.

We have meetings once every half term, usually before the next event we have planned and we’d be really pleased to have you there. Please don’t be put off by word “meeting” – it’s not formal, just a chance to get together and share ideas.

We always need volunteers to help with refreshments at events such as the Gospel Choir Concert or Open Evenings and, even if you can only spare half an hour, any help is gratefully received.

We would also really appreciate as much support as possible at the events we organise. In recent years we have raised money from successful events such as Christmas Bazaars, Quiz Evenings, Ice Skating Evenings and Joint Discos with St Ignatius. There are lots of other events coming up including the St Anne’s Sleepover on 10th July, details to follow. We’re also hoping to organise an International Evening, so we will be calling on all the wonderful cooks out there to bring a dish. We will also be sending out information about the 300 Club, which we hope we’ll get lots of support for, as this should hopefully be an easy way to raise money for the school but also give people a chance to win some cash.

We would be really glad to have your support and hope to see some new faces at our next meeting or social event.

You can contact the Friends of St Anne’s for further information about how you can volunteer, or to pass along to us any ideas, comments or suggestions, via our email address - [email protected]

FOSA Spring Term Quiz Night

St Anne’s and St Ignatius Year 8 & 9 Disco

Year 8 and 9 students from St Anne’s & St Ignatius flooded into the Upper Site Hall on Friday 30th January for another Disco. It’s safe to say, once again, that a great night was had by all. Our girls did outnumber the boys who came along, but that did not stop anyone from having a good time.

Tickets were sold in both schools in the weeks leading up to the event for £5 each. Additionally, refreshments were sold on the evening, allowing students to indulge in all things sweet. Our DJ was able to keep everyone entertained playing latest hits as well as allowing one of our Deputy Head Girls to get on the decks, keeping the dance floor packed all evening.

The Disco raised £962.55 for the Friends of St Anne’s. Thank you to everyone who supported the event, from the students who came, to the parents and staff who chaperoned on the evening. We look forward to hosting more discos in the future and welcoming St Ignatius students once again.

On Friday 27th February, the Friends of St Anne’s hosted another successful Quiz Night. With a total of 26 teams, all those present had a thoroughly enjoyable evening with lots of laughs along the way.

Teams were made up of parents, friends and staff and prizes were given to the winners and the losers. There was also a raffle on the evening, which helped to raise a magnificent £1028.62 for our Sixth Form Centre Appeal.

We will be hosting more Quiz Nights during the next academic year, so keep your eyes open for future dates. Parents and friends are always welcome.

Key Stage 3 – Year 9 Business and Enterprise

‘Tenner Challenge’ with Young Enterprise

March 2015 has given Year 9 students the opportunity to take part in the Tenner Challenge, a Business and Enterprise Competition which runs nationally with Young Enterprise. After last year’s success, there was a great response from the year group, with applications in from 18 teams. Teams applied by putting forward ideas with a business plan, all of which were very impressive. Students were given the chance to think of a business idea and how to make it happen, by using real money. They also needed to think about how to make a profit and make a difference. It was very hard to judge but only five teams could be chosen to go through, and these are listed below.

Each team received a start-up loan of £30 and has a chosen charity for which they will be giving 50% of their profits to. They may then choose to spend the remaining profit on a team activity, divide it or re-invest it to make a further social impact. The Challenge took place over 9th–13th and 16th-20th March, and each team was given a designated day per week to sell in school.

Throughout the challenge, students have had weekly challenges to complete, and they all took part in a training morning to prepare them for some of the fundamentals areas they should focus on when starting up a business. Each team did a fantastic job on marketing and advertising, and were great when giving their sales pitches to Lower Site students in assemblies. The final counting of each team will take place during the last week of term, but we know that across the five teams there will be in excess of £2,500 raised.

FOSA - Ice Skating at Alexandra Palace

A group of lucky St Anne’s students had an exciting time at Alexandra Palace Ice Rink on Saturday 7th February. For the first few minutes it seemed that everyone was holding on to the sides of the ice rink but any initial fears about the ice were soon overcome and the girls’ confidence grew and grew as the session went on. They had a great time skating and some of our girls looked like future stars, zooming round in their bright clothes, stripy leggings and woolly scarves. Jane Torvill, watch out!

The girls were keen to share their experiences. Ella-Maya in Year 9 said that, “I enjoyed meeting my friends and watching people drop”. Angelina in Year 8 said, “I loved it when the disco lights came on and it was fun gliding around with my friends”. Khalida, Roisin and many others from Year 7 all said that they can’t wait to go again next time.

When it was time to go home, the girls were all keen to get slush puppy drinks to have on the way back as a well-deserved treat. Many thanks to the Friends of St Anne’s for organising the evening. It was a really enjoyable evening. Ms Petherbridge, Teacher of Art

State of the Art!Year 7 Hat Designs

To coincide with London Fashion Week, 7A were set the challenge to create mini paper hats. The girls simply excelled themselves, creating such detailed and exciting responses whilst working to a very tight deadline. Well done!

Well done to Delicia Ong in 9M for producing an imaginative piece of homework.

The brief was to create a response to a series of A level Photographic works based on the theme Portraits and Distortion. Delicia created her own photographic response using Photoshop which she then developed into a very expressive and creative A3 painting. An excellent example of independent learning in Art.

Our Year 8 students got hands-on this term with Kodu Game Lap, a visual programming language made specifically for creating games. The study unit was designed to promote thinking both in and out of the box. The girls therefore had to think inside the box to use existing models as characters in their game. They then had to think out of the box to add life to the virtual robots and give them unique characteristics. Upon completion, the girls produced a wide range of games based on subjects including racing, fighting, shooting, maze and a zombie attack!

News from the ICT Department

Year 9 Computer Science Masterclasses

Year 9 students Daiana Condrea and Delicia Ong successfully completed a series of Computer Science workshops at Gladesmore Community School in Haringey. The Masterclasses allowed the girls to further their knowledge of computer science over a course of eight Saturday morning sessions. In completing the course, they have gained experience of a range of diverse topics within computer science, including logic, big data, security, robotics, optimisation, human computer interaction and computer animation. Well done, girls!

Year 8 - Kodu Game Lap

Earlier this month, Year 13 students celebrated women in technology by attending The Royal Institution in the West End. They took part in a day of discovery led by leading women from industry and academia, working in exciting areas of technology. The girls enjoyed interactive presentations, took part in maths / science competitions and joined in with a Q&A session with four current female undergraduates studying a computer science degree course. KS3 Science is Educational and Fun!Year 7 Science Club

Have you ever wondered how to make glue from milk and vinegar or slime? Well in Science Club, we have it all. We have exciting and interesting experiments such as inflating mini-balloons and some explosions. Bang!

Science Club helps us to deepen our knowledge and understanding of science whilst having fun and creating cool gifts, such as bath salts. We test substances and learn why they are used in everyday life, so why not come along on Mondays after school. Alicia Browne 7A

Guinea Pig Club

The girls on the Lower Site come along to the Science department on Monday lunchtimes to look after the guinea pigs. They clean out the cage and handle them - but only once they’ve managed to catch them! Einstein always proves to be a difficult customer. We are looking forward to the Summer Term when hopefully the boys will be able to enjoy their new outdoor home, giving the girls more opportunities to learn about caring for animals. Miss Kitching, Teacher of Science

Mayor’s Award for ScienceWell done for all the hard work that all three St Anne’s students who got through to the Mayor’s Award for Science finals have put in (Tomi Akande, Joana Martins and Tameera James). Tameera’s group achieved an overall second place in the competition - an excellent achievement that shows what great minds we have here at St Anne’s! It was great to see the girls pick up awards at Southgate School’s Awards Ceremony on Tuesday 17th March. Well done, girls. The picture shows Tameera with the Mayor himself, Ali Bakir.

On Monday 9th February, four very tired AS Physics students and two equally tired staff members set off in the early morning to Gatwick Airport to fly to Geneva. What were we going to see there, you may ask? Well, intrepid scientists as we are, we went to visit CERN - the European Centre for Nuclear Research - where the Big Hadron Collider is based. The main aim of CERN is to probe the fundamental structure of the Universe, including forces and matter, and to look into the ever-fascinating subject of black holes!

The girls - Olivia Szymczak, Sarah Al-Awoad, Sarah Gallagher and Jessica Edwards - got to see first-hand research on the Hadron Collider and explore the facilities there on a tour. They met with scientists involved in current research and were able to ask questions. We also got an extra day to peruse the beautiful city of Geneva and see many sites and of course, we lapped up the CHOCOLATE and PIZZA there (schlick schlack! The girls know what this means!☺). We returned to London the next evening on the 10th. The girls represented St Anne’s beautifully. They are great examples of the intelligent and mature students that we have here. It was a pleasure to accompany them.

Media Department -

Young Women Tackling InjusticeOur Media students at St Anne’s have once again commenced work with Exposure Media, a youth charity and some other local schools to create a new project, with the initial idea to be focused around human trafficking and slavery. Year 12 and 13 Media students are currently working hard on the completion of their final coursework pieces for A level. The coursework, which counts as 50% of the final grade, is on music videos or film openings, and focuses on and addresses modern day issues. This is on the back of some excellent work last year by Year

13, which resulted in the film Sticks and Phones, about cyber-bullying, which was shown at the recent Southbank Centre’s Youth Film Festival.

Finally, congratulations from the Media Department – and the school as a whole – must go out to Shenay in Year 13, who has been appearing in a number of short TV spots on Sky 2, advertising Dreams beds.

A-Level Geography Trip to Epping ForestA group of Year 12 Geography students visited the Epping Forest Field Centre in Essex on 4th March 2015. The purpose of the excursion was to carry out an investigation to assess the level of flood risk in the local area. Students learnt how to take weather recordings and readings from a weather station based at the Centre.

They also visited a range of flood defence schemes in the area and carried out a flood risk assessment. They even got to see the boutique shop that is used in the reality programme The Only Way is Essex. Despite bitterly cold winds – and a complete lack of appearances by Joey Essex – the students persevered. Maybe next time they will take Mr. Sikaude’s advice and bring warmer clothing! Physical Education NewsYoung Sports Ambassador Training

On Monday 9th March two of our promising sports leaders from Year 9 Chloe Hennigan (9M) and Rachel Jimenez (9Y) were invited to attend Young Sports Ambassador training. The training was held at Lea Valley School, and brought together students from local schools to: discuss the qualities, skills and knowledge needed to be a role model in PE and school sport, and to share their ideas on PE and school sport in their schools and communities. The training involved discussions, group work and competitive team challenges! Both Rachel and Chloe will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills further at future training events and Primary School competitions. Any other young sports leaders who are interested in training can speak to their PE teacher as we hope there will be lots more opportunities for more girls to be involved soon.

Year 7 Athletics Team This term saw the Year 7s turn at the Lee Valley Indoor Athletics Cup. Having trained each week after school on Tuesday night come rain or shine, 2 teams were entered into the first round. We had some amazing performances including some 1st positions and school records, and managed to get 1 team through to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, although improving on some of our times and distances, we were on this occasion knocked out at this stage. All girls did fantastically well, and we look forward to seeing how they perform in the warmer summer term.

Team from left to right are: Isabelle Keeley 7L; Sione Neto Cardosa 7F; Jasmine Conway 7F; Natasha Rossek 7F; Olivia Baptiste 7F; Alison Arredondo 7F; Miriam McKinney 7L; Gemma Folade 7F; Nicole Tissot 7F and Rute De Almeida 7L.

KS4 Fitness Club Up to thirty-six Year 10 students have been attending fitness club after school (Tuesday on Wednesday). A number of students are completing this training in order to improve their short course GCSE PE practical mark, while some girls are including this as the ‘practical’ element of their Duke of Edinburgh course. Others are simply looking to improve their fitness level, enjoy the rush of endorphins and relieve some stress!

Well done for your excellent commitment girls. We look forward to seeing you after Easter to burn off some of those chocolate eggs!

Cross Country After her amazing performance at last term’s Borough Cross Country Championships, Allison Arredondo 7F was selected to represent Enfield at this year’s Middlesex County Cross Country Championships held at Harrow School.

Although the course was a long and tough one, participating in this event was a fantastic experience for Alison. She was able to be part of a team of students from across the borough and compete in an outstanding setting.

Individually, Alison finished in an incredible 37th place. Well done. We look forward to seeing what you can do on the track in the summer!

KS3 Netball Teams - Going from Strength to Strength...Year 7 Netball TeamIt has been great to see so many Year 7s continue to attend training on Thursday nights after school during the cold dark term that has just passed. The effort, self-motivation and enthusiasm has been highly contagious and the girls have all shown real improvement in their individual skills and game play. This term started with an extremely hard game against Kingsmead which we lost. Not ones to be demoralised, the team continued to train hard and improve, winning the next four consecutive games against Bishop Stopford, Enfield County, Lee Valley and Heron Hall. We are currently 5th in the league and with a few more games to play, I’m sure we can move up a position. This year for the first year ever we were able to take two full teams to the borough tournaments. All girls played amazingly well and had a fantastic afternoon albeit a little cold. Unfortunately we did not make it to the semi-finals on this occasion, but there’s always next year!

For all PE news, including club days and times, fixtures and results, follow us on Twitter @STA_PEd

Year 8 Netball TeamThe Year 8 Netball team are currently undefeated in their last five games! Their most recent win was a home fixture against Enfield Chace. We were delighted to have a number of Year 8s coming along to offer their support. Excellent performances by Yannique Williams-Simpson (8L), Niamh Groarke, Paige Mattison-Weekes, Mary-Olivia Ogunseitan, Ciara Purdue (all 8A), Heavadny Johnson, Joyce Ogunsanya, Tochi Anunobi (all 8M) and Camille Wright (8F) helped secure a 17-14 win! The team are now looking forward to competing in the Borough Netball Tournament on Wednesday 25th March. Good luck, girls!

Year 9 Netball TeamThe Year 9 netball team have been working hard to attend training to help practice for their matches this term. The girls have played a few games over the last 2 terms, most recently they played against Latymer School and won 8-6. Well done to Zeynep Tikidagi, Aisling Beach, Naomi Falomo (all 9L), Savannah Stokes, Christvie Nseka-Makabukidi, Lynord N’da Kouassi (all 9T), Sophia O’Sullivan (9A) and Chloe Hennigan (9M) for your hard work and sportsmanship during the match - you should be proud of yourselves for representing St Anne’s. The Year 9 team have got one match left to finish the season. Good luck and play your hardest. Ms Wightwick

Subject Leader for Physical Education

Year 7 Inter-form Netball This term the Year 7s took part in a inter-form netball competition and all played really well. It was lovely to see the girls work together to practice for the matches and on the day organise themselves for each game. Congratulations! You should all be proud of yourselves for the hard work you put into the competition. A special ‘well done’ to 7A who came 3rd, 7L who came 2nd, 7J who won every game and were the overall winners, and Eleanor McWilliams 7J for being the player of the tournament. The summer term will see more inter-form competitions, so make sure you listen out for information.

Inspiring All Young People We use martial arts training to promote peace, unity, respect, kindness, empathy, education, self-awareness, confidence etc. Martial arts training can help young people:

• Become more determined and demonstrate resilience • Understand and demonstrate the importance of right living, right thoughts, right conduct • Learn to develop self-control and manage emotions • Experience being part of a team and understand their contribution to it • Learn the importance of practice and preparation • Learn how to set realistic goals and work towards achieving them • Aspire to improve and challenge themselves; working towards their personal best • Have fun and enjoy themselves!

Martial Way Training run classes at St Anne’s every Friday after school which are attended by our Sixth Form students. The sessions are really enjoyable. The girls are great and are really engaged. The way that the training is done links the physical activity to spirituality and promotes positive behaviour.

Our Head Girl TeamThe Head Girl Team have been very busy this term with running and starting up new teams and clubs as well as launching our successful mentoring scheme. Sarah Gallagher has been in charge of mentoring this year and she has done a great job in finding and allocating Sixth Form girls to mentor groups and individuals in all subjects for Years 10-11. The lower years have enjoyed these sessions very much and are saying how these one-to-one sessions have been helping them attain their target grades. Niamh Murray and Linh Ninh, our fundraisers, have been working hard to raise money for charities such as the British Heart Foundation. They managed to hold sweet sales on the Upper and Lower sites in time for Valentine’s Day, offering love themed sweets, and spent lunchtimes creating sweet bags to sell. Across two days, they managed to raise just over £100! Rachel Obeng has recently started Growing Girls. This is a club that runs during Friday lunchtimes at the Upper Site. It encourages all girls to think and become empowered young women of today by running controversial debates as well as ensuring we continue to spread love and positivity.

Now that the weather is getting a little warmer, Nwando Okechukwu - our sports fanatic – has started trials for our very first football club on the Lower Site. We had over 40 girls sign up from Years 7-9 and are hoping to find the perfect squad of 15. Future plans for this team include playing friendly matches with other schools as well as hoping to join in next season’s School League!

As promised by the Team, the School Band Auditions have just ended for the Upper Site and will be starting soon on the Lower Site. Carly, Linh, Rachel and I auditioned just over 30 girls who sang, played the drums, guitar, piano and much more! The Upper Site band will soon be announced and we hope to showcase the amazing musical talent at our school at the Easter Mass.

In terms of raising money for the new Sixth Form Building, the Team decided to organise the Sixth Form’s very first Quiz Night – St Anne’s versus St Ignatius College – on 6th March 2015. The event was a great success and we managed to raise over £150! Although St Anne’s lost the competition (but only by a single point!), we are sure that next time St Ignatius will not be looking so smug at the end!

Christina Tejada, Head Girl
