This year we have almost 1200 students enrolled into the College. For those new to the College, it will be a year of real expectation as we get to experience first-hand the educational programs this College has to offer. Congratulations to our Class of 2018 on their outstanding HSC results, so many achieved personal best scores. At this point I would like to announce our Dux for 2018 was Miss Coco Chen who obtained an ATAR of 99.00 and our Dux Proximate was Miss Jessica Steenbeeke with an ATAR of 97.75. A more detailed analysis of our HSC results will be published in a subsequent Arndell Advocate by our Acting Director of Curriculum Mrs Katrina New. Also we have installed some more synthetic turf around the Junior School. These capital works will assist the College in its growth as well as maintain the quality of learning spaces we currently enjoy. At the beginning of the year I would once again like to take this opportunity to remind both parents and students of the expectations that we have of all our members of the College Community here at Arndell. We are first and foremost a College interested in developing the many gifts and talents our students have been given so that they can go on to live productive lives in the world God has provided for them. Therefore we require all of our students to come into the College with a growth mindset which is conducive to seeing what they are capable of achieving. Con’t over page

From the Headmaster Dr Gareth Leechman I would like to extend a warm welcome to all members of the Arndell Anglican College community as we start a very exciting year for the College.

I also welcome all our new teaching staff for 2019:

Mr Ewan Dennis-Smither – Agriculture/TAS Teacher Miss Kristina Dimech – Junior School Mrs Lyndal Dowd – Junior School Mrs Rachel Goulding – Junior School Mrs Larne Jacobs – Deputy Head of Junior School (Pastoral Care/Organisation) Mr Paul Marelic – Junior School Mr Heath Parker – Music Teacher Mrs Amanda Refalo – Music Teacher Miss Phoebe Tracey – Junior School Mrs Kirstie Wakely – Visual Arts Miss Taylor Watkins – Geography/Maths Teacher Miss Belinda Wilsher – PDHPE During the holiday break a series of refurbishments were completed across the whole of the school; the Stage 2 area was completely refurbished, new office and classroom spaces constructed in the Laffin block and a new Maintenance Shed/Uniform Shop has been completed.

Students who have the right attitude can be clearly identified; they wear their uniform with pride, they are prepared for each day, they are attentive and willing to contribute to class learning - they do not distract the learning of others and they seek to be involved in the broader life of the College. In short these students want to embrace the life they have been given and make the most of it, not just for themselves but for the lives of those they come into contact with. God has made us relational beings, first with himself and then with those around us. Relationships are fundamental to what we stand for here at Arndell Anglican College. We will at all times seek to create positive relationships between home and school and between staff member and student, because we know that great things can be achieved when all members of the community are working together in an attempt to meet a common set of goals. From Pre-Kinder to Year 12 each child is guided and encouraged to excel academically, physically and spiritually in a Christian learning environment. It is my hope and prayer that God may continue to bless what we do here at Arndell Anglican College and I look forward to serving you all in the year ahead. Uniform Shop News Mrs Elizabeth Moore It is time to try on your blazer as Blazer Fitting Day is 2 weeks away (Friday 22nd February 2019). Every student in the College (excluding Prep) will require a blazer to wear with their winter uniform. Whilst winter changeover does not occur until Monday 13 May, now is the time to decide if your current blazer will still fit, OR if you require a new one (or a 2nd hand blazer). In past years we have had many students without a blazer that fitted them simply because they had grown out of last year’s blazer and didn’t realise until after the fitting day. If you have outgrown your old blazer and it is in good condition (in good repair and dry cleaned), it can be brought to the uniform shop to sell in the 2nd hand clothing pool. Many families are looking for good quality 2nd hand blazers, so get them in ASAP. Blazer fittings will be held on FRIDAY 22ND February, 2019 in Laffin 4

Students must be at school on this day to be fitted, commencing with Year 7 students. All Year 7 students requiring a blazer fitting, who have prepaid their deposit, are to line up outside LAFFIN 4 (the OLD uniform shop) from 8:15am. Yrs 8-12 will be fitted at recess and are required to present to the LAFFIN 4 promptly at 10:40am. Junior School Students will be collected from their classrooms throughout the morning. Blazers are a compulsory part of the Arndell Anglican College school uniform and they are individually fitted for each student. It is worthwhile noting that the uniform shop keeps no stock of new blazers.

Girls Blazer (Yr. K-10) $190.00 Boys Blazer (Yr. K-10) $240.00

Senior Stripe for ALL Yr. 11 & 12 students – add $30 to above prices

Prices include fitting, alterations and GST.

Note: Boy’s blazers have extra details e.g. pockets and lapels.

A $100.00 deposit is required to confirm and register your child for a fitting. This must be paid to the Uniform Shop, either in person or over the phone using your credit card, before Tuesday 19th February or your child cannot be fitted. Deposits can not be accepted on blazer fitting day. A late fee of $30.00 will apply to anybody requiring a fitting after Friday 22 February.

Year 11/12 students requiring a new blazer will automatically have the senior stripe applied when it is made. If you are currently in Yr. 11 or 12 and already have a blazer that fits that requires a senior stripe, please bring your dry cleaned blazer to the Uniform shop before Tuesday 19 February and a senior stripe will be applied for a cost of $30.00, to be paid in advance.

Second Hand Blazers: anyone wishing to sell their blazer (in good condition and dry cleaned with the dry cleaning tag attached) can bring it to the Uniform Shop now.

Welcome to 2019 – Arndell Anglican College Secondary School The start of the Academic year has gone smoothly, with students receiving their laptop’s and timetables. Year 7 students have been assigned a locker with a padlock and students have settled into their classes. Please ensure that your child’s uniform adheres to the College’s Uniform Policy including appropriate hair, makeup and jewellery, which can be viewed via this link. http://www.arndell.nsw.edu.au/content/uniform-policy

If you have not done so already, please ensure that all necessary paperwork (eg. student enrolment forms, medication forms, transport forms) have been submitted to the Main Administration Office. Also, any prescription medication (whether long or short term) for your child, must be taken to the First Aid Office. The medication must be accompanied by a covering letter from your doctor explaining how the medication is to be administered and an action plan should your child’s condition deteriorate under this medication. It is clearly in the best interests of each student at Arndell that he/she attends each day of the school year. This ensures continuity of learning and stability for the student in the school environment. It is also part of Arndell’s obligations under the Education Act to know about and monitor each student’s pattern of attendance. Parents will be contacted by the Head of House if there are ongoing absences.

Please ensure that your child arrives at school by no later than 8.30am. In the Secondary School, regular absence from school (or lateness) may mean that students do not complete the mandatory minimum hours needed for completion of a course of study. This can lead to non-completion of a subject for Stage 5 or Stage 6 (Higher School Certificate).

If a student is late to school or needs to leave early, the student and parent/guardian must go to the Main Administration Building. Students cannot leave the school premises without parental consent.

Please note: Students must not use their own mobile devices to make arrangements for parents to collect them and likewise, parents should not contact their child in the same manner. Emergency contact must be made through the College Administration on 4572 3633. We understand that students, from time to time become unwell. It is a mandatory requirement that upon their return that a note of explanation accompany the student. This should be addressed to the Homeroom Tutor.

Where a prolonged absence is required with respect to private family matters then a request, made in writing, must be sent to the Headmaster. If you are already aware of any planned absence during an exam period, please complete the Application for Extended Absence or Exemption http://www.arndell.nsw.edu.au/content/forms-assessment-schedules If the absence occurs on an assessment date or Examination Period, the Prior arrangements form must also be completed and submitted to the Headmaster for approval. For examinations, assessments or in class assessment: Any submission of tasks must be completed before leave is taken. Examinations or in class assessments will need to be completed at a time arranged with the Head of Department and Director of Curriculum.

Below you will find dates of all Examinations. It is expected that all students are to be in attendance during the examination periods.

At Arndell, we pride ourselves for our uniform and high standard of dress code. Please ensure that the correct uniform is worn at all times and reflects the uniform policy outlined in the College diary. Please note that girls’ hair ties should be school colours (red, white, and blue) only and jewellery must adhere to the school uniform policy. Please also note the length of the Girls Skirt or Dress – this must be at knee height only and the ‘Girls Make-Up Policy’. This must be adhered to. Please reinforce the uniform guidelines with your child regularly. Non - compliance with the uniform policy will be addressed by the Head of House and the Head of Middle/Senior School and may lead to service after school.

This year Assemblies will occur one Friday morning per fortnight and will be held in the Gym. All students are required to attend. Chapel will be held on Tuesday morning (Houses: Tebbutt and Johnson) and Wednesday morning (Houses: Macquarie and Greenway) morning in the Auditorium. All students are required to attend.

At Arndell we wish to have an active dialogue with you. One of the primary ways in which this occurs for Years 7-12 is via the online welfare system, which provides weekly notifications of merits, positive comment and concerns regarding student behaviour and class work. This is an automatic service which is sent to the email address provided on enrolment. If you have any concerns regarding your child, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher via the Main Administration office or email. Homeroom tutors will be able to direct you to the most appropriate person to speak with. Teachers should not be approached without having first made an appointment. We also communicate information through email, SMS, Newsflashes, Arndell Advocate newsletter and the College website – www.arndell.nsw.edu.au

All students have access to the Daily Buletin produced each day and placed on the students Dashboard. The Sports Scene is a weekly publication that details upcoming events, results and sport achievements and includes reports and photos. Information and Permission Notes are ssent home via email. Formal reporting occurs at the end of each Semester. In 2019, all reports will be made available electronically to parents/guardians. These will be Semester reports and will provide information regarding student achievement. At the end of Semester one parents are encouraged to attend Parent Teacher Meetings, to discuss, with their child and teacher, student progress and achievement. For Year 12 students and parents, there will be two opportunities this year, in Term 1 and Term 2 to meet with the teachers.

Arndell Anglican College will provide regular Homework for all students in the Secondary School, as it forms an integral part of the learning experience. It is the College’s firm requirement and expectation that all set homework be completed on time and to each student’s best ability. Homework may come in a variety of forms, including practice, preparation, response, extension, study and assignment/assessment. The time necessary to complete the set homework will increase each year up to Year 12.

Assessment tasks are an important part of the teaching and learning process and are used by teachers to not only ascertain student achievement but also to develop and improve teaching programmes. All formal assessment tasks will be given a minimum of two weeks’ notice. This will be done electronically by email. It is essential that students and parents read the assessment policy carefully as failure to complete assessment tasks may lead to non-completion of a subject/course. There are two assessment policies: Years 7 – 9 and Years 10 – 12 which can be found on the College website.
