2011 – by FATHER RICHARD

My first year at St Peter's was one of those transformation years. It was difficult to get the world of commerce out of my blood, but, I have managed! I have, once again, found and understood the meaning of my ministry and in so doing can see the miracles that God has given me - in every child, staff member and parent. This is absolutely awesome and it reminds me why God has called me to be a priest. The three highlights of my first year were: firstly, my installation. To be placed by the Bishop to continue his ministry in this 21st Century school was daunting, but challenging. The privilege to pray for each person in my care during my times of prayer has been humbling. There have often been times when I could give thanks to God for what he has done in certain individual’s lives, but there have also been times when I have interceded for people. At times I have prayed for the cross that certain people have had to carry and there have been the times when we have been devastated and have had our share of funerals together. To minister to the needs of this community is an honour and with God, is has been a blessing to me. I will never forget the message which Bishop Duncan shared with us on this occasion, my Institution. His memory at St Peter's will always live on. On the day of my Institution, I sat in the congregation, quite nervous to be honest, then I was collected, made my promises and declaration before the school, with the inevitable joke, from Bishop Duncan from time to time, then he lead me to my chair where I would sit in chapel and they installed me. It was quite emotional, but incredibly spiritual. A moment where you hear God call ‘who shall I send?’ and you put your hand up and declare ‘send me!’ I have never regretted or second guessed my choice. The second highlight was the blessing of the Royce Hall. Wow, what a privilege. It was important to recognise Greg Royce for all he has been, and is, to our incredible school, but it was just as important to honour him by paying tribute and leaving a place (the Royce Hall) at St Peter's which will always be fondly remembered and accredited to his name. A Eucharist was held to mark the official opening of the Royce Hall, with all the bells, smoke, and of course, plenty of Holy water - which was used in the blessing and dedication the Royce Hall to God. This ceremony set the building aside in the Girls School, as our school hall to be used and celebrated by all. For me, this was quite ‘something’, to be asked to officiate at such an incredibly important milestone in our school’s life, was an honour and a privilege. It was one of those ‘wow’ moments, for me personally, which I will never forget. Finally, St Peter's is not just about prayer and the chapel, it's also about having fun. As I always say, ‘we pray hard and we play hard’! My first year a St Peter's was a ‘baptism of fire’ as I was introduced and strongly encouraged to get out on to the stage and participate in our ‘Staff Variety Show.’ Clearly there was plenty of talent, lots guts, and, hey, even lots of putting it ALL out there, flesh and all! I remember the Girls School number, ‘Girls just want to have fun’ and wishing the ground would swallow me up during my 10 seconds on stage, but I survived! I will also remember that show as it was the year after the 2010 Soccer World Cup and I will never forget the fun with numbers like ‘Waving flag’, but the real fun was practising and really getting to know my fellow members of staff during the hours we rehearsed.

It's great to reflect on life, at times, and the journey which makes us, us! Never in my wildest dreams, thought that school life could be so fulfilling. The St Peter's family is just that, a family. We disagree, have different ideas, but when we really need each other - we are always there to carry one another.

If I had the time over, I would still raise my hand to say, ‘send me.’ St Peter's has been a home, with a warm and loving family. Photos from 2011

FROM THE JP HEAD LEARNING LANDS We have had such an exciting time this week as we launched our Learning Lands. The first learning experience we will host is Marble Lands, where the girls will investigate as many experiences using marbles such as; marble runs, marble painting and more. Going forward, this area; a space to create and make new and innovative things, will stretch our children in new and innovative ways and help them explore their world in exciting ways! Thank you to our teachers ; Kerryn Schmidt, Chloe Hall, Bronwyn Peake and Zanele Mbatha for all the ideas and creating such a special space for learning! HERITAGE DAY At St Peter’s we continue to foster the celebration of our commonalities and our differences we share. This week the classes investigated their own cultures and those around them, within a South African context. Today the girls were able to wear traditional dress, taste food that is different and explore the Artefact Museum in the library.

Heather Kissack

Girls and staff went to all ends and everyone looked beautiful as Heritage Day was celebrated.
