From the Executive Principal Dear Parents, Teachers and Staff, Congratulations to our Grade 12 students on their graduation, also to our Grade 10, PYP 6 and Early Years students who celebrated the next step in their learning journey with a completion ceremony. The Grade 12’s leave day to day life at Sekolah Ciputra and begin a new stage in their lives. The 2018-2019 graduating students join our Alumni and their graduation photo can be seen on our Alumni Wall in the canteen. Good luck! and stay in touch. Schools are both transformational and transitional. Teachers make an impact on the students’ academic and social lives. The IBO learner profile, as articulated in our school vision, are the values that bring us together. It fills me with pride to see another cohort going out into the world having successfully completed as many as 16 years at this school. The school has transformed them and they have transformed the school. Now is a time of transition as they move from one phase of their lives to another. Likewise, our PYP 6 face a transition to the challenges of the High School and MYP, while Grade 10 will transition to the Diploma Programme. However, through all these transitions, our teachers and the community will be there to guide and support all our students. Thank you to everyone for their efforts over the last term. Culture Day, the PYP Production, HS Cross Country, Grade 12 Visual Arts Exhibition and the World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) are just a few highlights over the last term. These events represent a true continuum school involving students, teachers, staff and parents from both the High School and Elementary and sums up the spirit of collaboration and service that we see in the school on a daily basis. Many of our teachers and staff put in a lot of additional time and effort to ensure the students get the best experience. We witnessed this recently with the largest WSC held in Surabaya which was supported by teachers and staff with their hard work and dedication. Thank you all so much for going the extra mile over the past year. At this time of the year we also farewell a number of staff who are taking the opportunity to move on in their careers. Thank you for all for your efforts at Sekolah Ciputra. We wish you boundless success wherever you go. Similarly, thank you to all the families whose children are leaving the school this year. Your support and the many contributions you have made are appreciated. Finally, a big thank you to the whole community for a wonderful year. I hope you all have a happy, safe and restful holiday. NEWSFROM PYP

As another academic year comes to an end, it is a good time for us to reflect on our accomplishments, our challenges and our hopes for the future. This has been another exciting and highly successful year in the PYP. Our students were successful at experiences and challenges, both in and out of the classrooms. We offered a record number of SIGs this year which gave our students more options to explore their interests and passions. Our students were successful at competitions and events such as JISMO and World Scholars’ Cup which not only highlighted the talent among our students but also brought much positive attention and recognition to our school.

Thank you as always to parents who have always been our strongest supporters and partners in educating our students. We hope you will take some time during the holidays to ensure that your children enjoy their time away from school and also manage to engage with their learning, particularly in the area of daily reading and writing. This will help students to maintain the academic gains they made during the school year and will prepare them well for a successful start to the new school year.

As always, the end of the year means saying goodbye to some of our staff. We wish Miss Jane, Miss Penelope, Miss Rebekka, Miss Agnes, Miss Liene, Miss Nindy, Miss Amanda and Mr Dylan all the best as they move on to new horizons. Thank you for what you did to enrich Sekolah Ciputra during your time here.

We also bid a fond farewell to our Grade 6 graduates and wish them the very best in the next leg of their journey into further education. We have taken with you good memories and much learning from your time in the PYP. We will see many of you in the canteen as you move to high school at Sekolah Ciputra. Dream big and work hard – the best recipe for success!

To everyone in our community, have a safe and restful time with your families and friends! See you next year!

The opening ensemble piece, “Once Upon a Time” set the mood for the entire night. Brilliantly sung, excellent costumes and dance moves from the young cast. The plays songs ranged from “Starlight”, “A Real Live Boy”, “Merry Marionettes”, “Thieves”’ “Good To Have a Friend” to the visual highlight of singing fish in “Every Fish In The Ocean”. For those of us who couldn’t get enough, the entire cast sang a medley of all these songs as the final encore. The lunchtime practices since February, shone through the cast’s vocals.

The play included multi-media components that cleverly included Bahasa Indonesia language into the story. A hilarious highlight was Grandma, Granddaughter, and Grandfather transforming from video presentation to live on stage. As leads, Pinocchio, Geppetto, and the Talking Cricket filled their roles and mixed comedy and drama with consummate ease. In all, 105 students from PYP B to PYP 6, 35 teachers and the support from parents contributed to the whole show’s success. Ably commanded by Mr. Dendy and Ms. Adri, whose dedication and attention to detail shone through the entire performance.

Astonishing acting, clever costumes, and sensational singing rang out from Ciputra Hall as the Sekolah Ciputra Elementary School demonstrated their love and ability for singing and dancing for their much anticipated production. The youngest students may have only been around five years old, but from the dramatic leads to the musical choir, the cast distinguished themselves as performers of the highest accomplishment.

“No Strings Attached” was a musical adaption of the children's novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Italian writer Carlo Collodi. Pinocchio was carved by a woodcarver named Geppetto. He was created as a wooden puppet but he dreams of becoming a real boy. With the assistance of the Purple Fairy and the Talking Cricket, Pinocchio is given the chance by agreeing to fulfill three promises. His misadventures soon cause him to make poor decisions, impacting his dream. Finally, with the help of his father, Geppetto, he understands why he should follow the promises and becomes a real boy.

HIGH SCHOOL

NEWS

Time goes on and the term flew by in what barely felt like a month as we fought our way through the hurdles that we students like to call tasks and exams. Out of the many students that we asked, they all described the year as vibrant, thrilling, and much more!

Regardless, memories and experiences were made and shared. However, despite the hardships, after all is said and done, it feels like an enjoyable term for us all.

The seventh graders were able to experience their first year in High School. The eighth graders strived to finish their entrepreneurship project. The ninth graders faced the national exams. The tenth graders busily preparing for their MYP graduation. The eleventh graders walked determinedly down their chosen pathways and courses. And most notably, the time for the twelfth graders, who have gone through the High School national exams and completed their High School years to depart from Sekolah Ciputra with the knowledge that they have gained thus far has finally come. They leave the school proud to take the next step of their lives.

Needless to say, to all the students who are reading this, congratulations on passing yet another year.

To commemorate the end of this jubilant school year, we’ve interviewed a few of our students to ask them a bit about what they have to say regarding their experiences throughout the past year.

"This term specifically was extremely hectic. We have our MYP Completion ceremony coming up. We've been juggling our assignments, extra-curricular activities, and preparation for the ceremony the past few months. There have been times when we all felt like giving up but we were able to come through and work things out," said Caitlyn, Grade 10. "So despite the rocky path, it has been an overall incredible term."

“This term was very fun and filled with amazing, new learning experiences.” said Marchella, Grade 11 DP. “Being a new student, it was nice that the school was very welcoming, and I was able to get together with people who I can call my precious friends.”

“The fact that the ninth graders had to go through not only the semester exams, but also their UNAS, mini personal projects, and semester summatives was incredibly stressful and tiring. But through it, all this was a really exciting year where we got to experience different new things like the drama performance,” said by Alicia Cheney, Grade 9.

Speaking on behalf of the students, we would like to thank our respectful teachers and admirable Student Council for their hard work. As you may all know, Sekolah Ciputra has held a number of successful events. The school as well as our hardworking Student Council team held the biggest ever Ciputra Cup in our very own school and of course, lastly, but in no way the least, the Gala night. As this year’s Student Council had set history, we hope our future Student Council captain and vice captain will lead another eventful year.

As always, Sekolah Ciputra has facilitated our learning journey throughout the years. The school not only taught us the importance of knowledge, but also the importance of skills that we need throughout our lives. We, the students, learn best through the hurdles that we face. Sekolah Ciputra aims to guide their students not only to become successful future leaders, but a principled and respectable one as well. With all that said, we hope you to have a wonderful summer holiday. And we look forward to seeing you at the start of the new school year.

Cheers! Moonly, Edgar, Vanessa/11 Science 1

On the 11th - 12th of May, my team consisting of Victoria, Reagan and myself, participated in the annual World Scholar's Cup (WSC) regional round along with 108 other teams from various schools. During this two-day event, we competed in four activities; the Scholar's Challenge, Collaborative Writing, debates, and the Scholar's Bowl.

All in all, the World Scholar's Cup can be best described as both stressful and rewarding. Late nights (and early mornings) were spent revising the subject materials and worrying about how well my team will do in each activity. On the day of WSC, we did struggle in some aspects of the competition. Despite this, we were all successful scholars, ranking 2nd in the senior Debate and Champion Teams categories.

Overall, joining the World Scholar’s Cup was an incredible experience that we don't always get to do within a classroom. Though exhausting, it is a valuable opportunity for training students to becoming active leaders and thinkers.

On behalf of my team, I would like to give thanks to the World’s Scholar’s Cup for organizing the regional round, Sekolah Ciputra for

hosting it, and the teachers who helped to hone our skills in preparation for this wonderful event. Davina Faith Hadinyoto – 10D

For the last STUCO event this school year, STUCO presented their annual Charity Week, which was a continuation of our school’s fundraising activities like the Chinese New Year (CNY) event and the Art Festival in PYP.

The event was held on Monday, 29th of April and went through to Thursday, 2nd of May. During the Charity Week, the STUCO officers organised various activities for the school community to participate in: Fun Games: Sponge Throw, Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Moving Island, Bottle & Ball Race and Tornado tag. Each game cost Rp. 5000,00 (five thousand Rupiah). We also opened stalls for food and drinks. All of the students, many teachers, staff and parents were really excited to participate in all activities. Although it was a busy

Ideas and daydreaming have always been linked to one another. I have always regarded myself as a curious individual. Ever since I was in Grade 5, I have been listening in to every conversation the adults would have about politics or economics. Not a topic for a fifth grader, but it fascinated me. By the time I was 15, I went away from home, in an entirely different city by myself and I could do whatever I wanted—so long as it’s not anything dangerous, of course.

It was then I started to have ideas—big and small, all exciting. Unfortunately for me, I had to keep my ideas to myself since there was nowhere for me to spill my loaded brain. My friends were generally

week for STUCO officers, it was an amazing experience for us to plan and to arrange this event. We raised Rp 6,121,300 from the charity event stalls and games. Together, with the school fundraising during CNY event, we’ve raised Rp 15,830,300 in total.

We gave our donations to an orphanage on Tuesday, 14th of May. We went to Penampungan Jompo, Yatim Piatu, anak cacat dan orang terlantar Yayasan Cinta Kasih Bunda Teresa Jl. Beringin no 5 Sambikerep. We have had a very tight schedule but we plan to go again and to other orphanages in Semester 1 in the next academic year.

This event was an example of students at Sekolah Ciputra taking action and helping other children in need. From kids to kids. We are very happy when a small thing we do makes them smile so much. It is very humbling and makes us appreciate how fortunate we are.

We thank all parents, teachers, staff and students who made this event a great success.

not interested on social issues, economic booms, political phenomenons and other things that I was interested in. So, I hid away all my “crazy” thinking in the back of my head where no one could see, not because I was ashamed, but because other students my age didn’t want to hear about them.

Last year, when the new school year had just started, I discovered one of my friends had acquired a TED license for the school to have a club. And so it begins, our small step of providing a space for students to spread their ideas. TED is a media organization, posting talks online where ideas could be heard. Their motto of “Ideas worth spreading” captures the attention of many people. It is here where ideas, big and small, personal or communal, are spoken out to the world freely. The TED Club in Sekolah Ciputra provides a space for students to express their opinions, ideas and thoughts about interesting topics and process those ideas in a digestible package. This provides guidance for students, like myself, to start expressing their ideas in a manner that can be interesting to other people as well.

Learning is never limited. As people, we always learn regardless of our age. The TED Club reflects this idea of continuous learning. However, students can learn about topic or subject matters entirely unrelated to school—basically, anything

you find interesting. Yes, anything. Want to talk about cloning a mammoth DNA? Sure. Want to talk about the possibility of world destruction? Sounds fun. Want to talk about resurrecting a dead forest? Superb! You can talk about anything, and there will always be an audience for you. Let out a little bit of your crazy, because there’s always a little bit of crazy inside a genius’ mind—even Einstein was thought to be a challenged student as a child when he started asking questions outside the box!

The TED Club brought to my attention of a local TEDx event which I attended last week with a friend. Here, I saw first-hand how people are enthusiastic about new ideas—or even improvement of old ideas. There were many questions thrown at the speakers, new concepts were born from the mind of a few people. Imagine being one of those people, spreading our own ideas and imagination.

Many people are familiar with the expression “curiosity killed the cat,” but what people don’t know, it ended with “satisfaction brought it back.” So, unleash your curiosity, attack the world with your fantastic ideas and spread your thoughts like wildfire with the TED Club of Sekolah Ciputra. There is no time to wait when you know your days are numbered.
