A favourite is Atelier free flow white for diluting colour. Use an indelible ink laundry marker for marking the canvas. A nice big brush helps ‘looseness’ and movement. Surf—turn hand over so that the surf if painted in the same direction as it comes in. Taubmans trade paint is great fof initial painting of canvas. It has anti mould. Atelier unlocking formula paints—can be sprayed with their unlocking formula to open up

again for more work or manipulation. Waves: for the white wash, angle the brush, and roll along the line of surf break. An old gunky

brush is good for this as it gives a different result each time. Use violet to create shadows under waves. Waves: lots of paint for froth, start at front, then use residue on brush towards the back. Pacific Blue paint add lots of white and it becomes a really lovely pink. Use a dry brush and a smidge of paint to add mist. Back of colour with a very light glaze of white ( free flow Atelier). The horizon line is always darker. Limit pallet to keep colours harmonious. If there is a reef or something under the water, paint that first, then over the top to get a good

realistic effect

Another great workshop from one of our members. Amazing to watch Nigel create something beautiful in around an hour or so.. And then later, as the pho-tos show, those who stayed for the workshop also were able to paint a lovely beach scene, each one interpreted differently using the techniques shown during the morning. Thank you Nigel!

The artist at work

Great works in progress by our members following Nigel's techniques .
